I don't think Luffy has a huge attachment to his mother, for all intents and purposes, Dadan filled that role in his life and she fits the descriptions Oda gave of his mother.

Obviously someday we're going to get Dragon's flashback and we'll meet her then, but for how much she actually affects Luffy? That's hard to tell.

Just look at all the new depth and background we've almost out of of nowhere started getting about Sanji. He's been an orphan as far as we've known the entire series, and now instead he has a prestigious family and lots of brothers and sisters. He's never brought it up before now, because it wasn't important. But hey, hidden depth!

I didn't necessarily mean attachment to her. But if she had any kind of role in his life after giving birth to him, she might have imprinted something on him. An idea or some kind of longing that managed to get stuck in his mind for all these years. Something in that sense.

It could be a greater meaning of something, depends… I dont think it's something completely benelovent and for everybody, luffy isnt old school superman.

I think if it never gets addressed, we can be fine without knowing what he said, as the reactions and script afterwards would describe it in a way that would fit him being the pirate king. If this was anyone but oda we would take it at face value and for effect but because it's him we have to question everything. I dont see a pr9blem with the original interpretation at all.

If it's something else im hoping its not too " ally of good, nightmare to you " because that would seem OOC for luffy, especially if its he has some tsundere hero complex

There is NOTHING special about that worth betting the future (and your arm) on that would make Shanks take special notice or be excited about. Especially coming from a naive 8 year old.

Because Luffy is a simple character, his words can carry many different meanings to the other more complex characters out there. Kinda the same way when he mentions he just wants to be free to Rayleigh.

He said the same thing Roger did!" It's not what he gambled on.

Plenty of people, including all the other supernovas, most of the warlords, and Don Krieg, and pretty much every rookie pirate setting out, have said "I want to be Pirate King!" That goal, the respect that comes with reaching that title, isn't THE thing by itself.

The hat giving, and Luffy's vow to be better than Shanks one day, are special, yes. It's something he genuinely believes Luffy can do. But they aren't the specific thing that got Shanks interested in Luffy in the first place.

Especially since we know at this point Roger never wanted to be "Pirate King" or famous for that. Similarly, Whitebeard just wanted a family, Mihawk shows no interest in pursuing that difficult title, and Buggy has shown zero interest in going after the actual One Piece treasure.

Also notice how he shouted ‘I’m gonna’. He did it with raised arms. That’s usually the stance that is drawn by the author when Luffy shouts his dream of becoming the Pirate King. And when he does so, he practically always precedes it with his famous opening line ‘I’m gonna’. So these are good reasons to think that what he shouted was his dream of becoming the Pirate King.

Luffy’s brothers then react in great stupefaction at what was said. One of the things that would surely cause such a reaction is his declaration of his dream to become the Pirate King. It was shown to elicit a similar, if not a stronger, reaction from most people. So, it is reasonable to believe such a conclusion, especially with the given arguments I have just provided.

After that, Sabo & Ace begin finding the intention of becoming ‘captain’ a problem to them since all three of them share it. This means that what had been just shared by Luffy was the intention of becoming ‘captain’. Given both this and the past repeated declarations of Luffy to become ‘pirate’, it logically follows that what Luffy desired to become was a ‘pirate captain’. That’s partially what was said there.

At the coliseum of Dressrosa, Barto told Sabo that Luffy is the future ‘Pirate King’, and Sabo said that he has known that since a long time ago. In other words, Luffy told Sabo his dream of becoming the Pirate King sometime in the past, and the time you linked us to provides the perfect setting for such a declaration to be revealed, given both the fact that Luffy hasn’t seen Sabo ever since that time he was supposedly killed & the strong suggestions that what he shouted in that place was his ambition to become a ‘pirate captain’.

There is nothing odd in the author’s omission of Luffy’s words regarding his declaration of his ambition. That is a literary device called ‘ellipsis’. You omit a certain event(s), and let the reader fill out the gap as he or she reads the story. It could be used either to save time or for stylistic reasons. I believe it was the latter.

If he did indeed say something else, it should then be an addition to that, not a substitution for it.

Concerning the argument that what Luffy said here meant becoming Pirate King, that’s not true.

What luffy said there is that he’d be ‘a great pirate’, and he preceded it with ‘I’m gonna be stronger than anybody’.

If being stronger than anybody meant being the Pirate King, then, by this logic, Whitebeard should have ruled the Grand Line as the next Pirate King after Roger, given that he was considered by everyone (including & especially by the author himself) as the ‘Strongest Man in the World’, but he wasn’t a Pirate King, despite reigning supreme in terms of strength.

This proves that standing supreme in terms of strength does NOT make a person Pirate King. Being the Pirate King means far more than just being stronger than anyone.

Off the top of my head, Kidd has absolutely said it, it's why his bounty is so high because he lays waste to anyone that mocks him about it. Moria, Croc and Doflamingo have definitely wanted the title, down to Dofla's crew actively supporting him for such. Ace pushed for WHitebeard to have the title. Buggy has had grandiose dreams of making it there during the war, though he had no shown desire for it before he was miraculously supported by a legion of followers.

I don't have my volumes in front of me so I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure Blackbeard has at least implied it, and also Krieg and Law. Not 100% on those though. Possibly Golden SHiki after Roger got the title, but its been forever since I read chapter 0.

And its after Roger's speech on his execution that the great pirate age started. By extension, everyone going out and being a pirate after that has at least a little dream of getting that great treasure, and the title that goes with it. Even if they don't say outloud that's their dream or ambition, it's something pretty much everyone wants.

It's people like Whitebeard and Shanks, and Buggy before his rise in infamy, who actually have some clue what's at the end of the line that don't seem to have any real interest in it.

Im pretty sure the doflamingo thing wasnt entirely his odea, he said he didnt need to become a pirate to bellamy, so as long as he could throw the world into chaos. If anything it was trebol who kept repeating it and doflamingo was ambivalent to that or didnt deny it. Monet definitely beleved in doflamingo and was a devoted follower so it makes sense she would say that while "dying"

Yes Shanks and Luffy have known each others for months but he was going to leave with Roger's hat on his head and it is Luffy speech at that moment which made him give the hat. So even if for you it is nothing special, that's what happened.

Yes, obviously that moment was special for them.

But Roger never said "I'm going to be king of the pirates!" and in fact didn't seem to care about the title at all once he had it. SImilarly he never said "I'm going to be the best pirate" or "I'm going to have the biggest treasure!" Those are just things he did, his legacy, stuff that happened along the way. Not his dream or ambition or world view or why he smiled on the gallows.

Luffy said something to Shanks that made Shanks go "Man, this kid is exactly like my old captain that I loved! I'm betting the future on this guy!" And it wasn't an 8 year old boasting he was going to be great.

The hat and the promise are for the pirate king dream, to keep Luffy going. that's between Luffy and Shanks.

But the sacrifice and loss of his arm, and constant telling others about it? The thing that bonded them in the first place? The thing that he feels he needs to tell Mihawk, Rayleigh and Whitebeard about that excited him? The spark that those same guys also see?

He didn't go "Guys, I met this eight year old who said he's going to be the king of pirates! Isn't that great?!" He said "He's exactly like the captain!" They're related, but different.

IMO, Shanks just meant that Luffy is talking like Roger, and not that he said something specific or similar.

I didn't think too much about this panel, but I love this idea. First, there's actually no way to be sure Oda intended to hide something instead of making a cute little transition, but there are many things that could indicate it. To be 100% sure of either is impossible, so let's be hopeful that Oda does what's better/more interesting for the story and 1) give Luffy a life goal that explains his true character instead of just using Pirate King as the vessel that embodies it 2) add complexity to his character 3) add more depth and justification to the future final events in the manga and what Luffy will end up doing to the world.

The part that I really like is that it could be what Roger said to Shanks, even if it's even more speculation. But what's more weird to me is that somehow the people refuting this theory seem to use more far-fetched arguments than the ones supporting it:

It wasn't the first time Luffy said he wanted to be the Pirate King, so the cute little transition would be just a cute little transition.
Shanks gave up his arm and therefore had already bet on Luffy before he said I WANNA BE THE PIRATE KING. So that absolutely can't be what made him bet on Luffy.
Someone (I think Kidd? can't find the chapter) already said to Luffy that "there's no point in going to the new world if you can't say the words I WANT TO BE THE PIRATE KING." Basically someone said that before that point everybody would laugh at you if you said it, now everybody would laugh if you didn't. So that again means that that phrase couldn't be the reason Shanks bet on Luffy because it's not a big deal. At all.
Like someone mentioned, there was no Pirate King before Roger. So Roger couldn't possible say "I WANT TO BE THE PIRATE KING" to Shanks. For example, Roger said to Rayleigh "Let's turn the world upside down together!" or something. So the "Luffy said the exact same thing as Roger" can't include the words Pirate King in it.

I would still say these could be two independent theories (what did luffy say on that panel with sabo and ace + what did both roger and luffy say that made Shanks bet on them?), but I like them better if they're the same.

PS: Be reasonable guys. And don't look for bad arguments in favor of things that would add nothing to the manga instead of looking for arguments for the side that actually wants One Piece to be the best Manga it possible can. Especially when the odds of either happening are 50/50.

How is that line readable as him thinking anything like that. It doesn't make any sense.
The line itself says nothing more then Whitebeard saying he thinks Blackbeard is unworthy of inheriting Roger's quest/will etc.
Now add all that we know from context and straight up things that have happened and been said.
-Blackbeard is a D, part of people talked about as carrying a will
-Blackbeard is a major player in the game for Pirate King, which is in of itself a quest to inherit what Roger left behind
-Whitebeard and really no one (except maybe Shanks) thought much of Blackbeard until his Thatch murder/departure.
-Subsequently Whitebeard seemed mostly uncertain and concerned about Blackbeard and his intentions, thought not even too much overall

There is never even one reason given for us to think Whitebeard had some respect and expectation of great things from Blackbeard of all people. Whitebeard probably didn't even think about him until he committed fratricide and ran off with stolen goods…and you expect he began thinking of him as a potential chosen one?? The very idea is absurd.

Whitebeard called literally all his crew his sons. If you think that meant the same level of relationship he had with Ace or Marco or even an ally like Squad for every last one that's completely ridiculous. Blackbeard was deliberately unremarkable on Whitebeard's ship, laying low and feigning apathy toward ambition until he could find the Dark Dark fruit.
Even given the idea that Whitebeard would be really close to him (lol), the Blackbeard he would know would be a unassuming nobody just happy to be around. So the idea that he would have ever thought of Blackbeard as a potential chosen one of some kind is completely ridiculous ESPECIALLY during the positive time of their relationship.

It took like 10 years before we found out he had a father and grandfather, and 16 years before we found out he had a second brother. Luffy's able to hide big things by pure ommission of them not coming up. So it doesn't have to be obvious or something we missed, just… something that hasn't organically come up in the story yet.

Yeah!I know…but like many others i too can't imagine any complicated ideology coming from 7 years old Luffy.And it is difficult to find what obvious thing we missed about him after all these years.

Children can be oddly perceptive. You do not have to be a future genius/prodigy to say something with a profound/different meaning. If this turn out to be anything, it would HAVE to be something simple because Luffy is the one to say it.

Bad example: "I want everyone to be able to eat meat!" - This could mean for someone else "I want to feed everyone" (which is more in line with a Toriko plot, than One Piece, I know, bad example.) A simple statement could have worldly ambitions/implications, not necessarily because the character wanted to make it so.

Jimbe asked Luffy to be a hero (something that most regard in a good light), however Luffy wouldn't have it, he wants all the meat. So if Luffy would have said: "Then I want to NOT be a hero", his brothers would make a: "what are you talking about" face, because of their meaning of the word. But we all know, it is because Luffy doesn't want to share his "hero reward"(meat).

Maybe something like "I WANT TO GO ON AN ADVENTURE WITH MY OWN CREW!" I think it'll give another glimpse as to why Luffy wants to be Pirate King so bad. We know it's not for power or glory and he just wants to be "free." And I imagine when we revisit this scene in the future, it'll show why he wants to be so free. My guess is he just wants to have a fun adventure with his own group of friends/crewmates and fulfill everyone's dreams together

Essentially, Sabo declared they should be free and become strong pirates. Ace wanted the world to know his name, he wanted to become a great pirate. He said he wouldn't lose to anyone and run from any fight. Luffy proceeded to laugh and say " I want to be…" Cut to a dumbfounded Ace and Sabo. Ace can't believe Luffy said that and Sabo can't wait to see what Luffy becomes in the future.

Upload those images to a website (google it) and then take the direct link and post it here.

Use the [hide][hide][\hide] function so we don't get that chunk of images taking scrolling space.
