I always took Hawk-Eye as canon since it was in VIZ and Funi. This is new news to me– is "Hawk-Eye" never actually in the Japanese version? I mean, I always thought it was Hawk-Eye Dracule Mihawk- the last two words there being his name and the first being similar to "Pirate Hunter" Zoro. I forget what those honorary titles are called.

No, he is "Hawkeye". Its just that after he defeats Zoro at Baratie he was supposed to introduce himself as "Dracule Mihawk", but in the dub he didn't reference his full name and just referred to himself as "Hawkeye Mihawk".

And "epithet" is the word you're looking for.

All returning characters have their same voice actors as before. Joel McDonald has directed all of the episodes thus far. Still annoyed that they can't seem to decide how they want to pronounce Sengoku's name, but the rest of the acting is very, VERY much on point. I didn't even remember we'd be getting to hear Dadan on this set. She sounds perfect.

Not all episode titles are overrun with exclamation marks, so I guess they're still somewhat trying to translate them properly.

However, I take some exception with the on-screen English translated titles for the Admirals. In the original Japanese text, the code name and real name are on the same line, but are separated by some space. In the English version, they display it as if it were a first and last name, like this:

Kizaru Borsalino
Akainu Sakazuki

Someone unfamiliar with the naming conventions of the Navy Admirals may think that's their full name or something. lol

On the plus side, however, they're consistently pronouncing Akainu correctly now.

*how they kept saying Impel Down was weird too, every character would emphasize each part "Im Pel Down" or sometimes it sounded like "ImPelDown"

Episode 462 commentary features Joel McDonald and Daniel Baugh, voice of Jimbei. Baugh, like many of the recent additions to FUNi's active actor roster, comes from theater, and his regular speaking voice sounds NOTHING like Jimbei. Very cool.

I didn't have a chance to start watching the second disc today, but I'll definitely tackle it tomorrow.

It's incredible hearing so many lines come out of Doflamingo's mouth in this arc. And Mihawk, too.

The episode 462 commentary with Joel and Daniel Baugh reveals that Travis Willingham was too busy to come to Texas to record Ace's lines for this arc. Todd Haberkorn has a recording studio in Los Angeles with a set-up and equipment very similar to what FUNi uses. All of Ace's lines were recorded in L.A., under Todd's direction, with Joel getting the final say on which cuts to ultimately use. I must say, I'm impressed and honored that they were willing to go so far to keep Travis as Ace.

Also, Joel makes it very clear in the commentary that he absolutely loves One Piece. (And he pronounces Sengoku correctly twice in the commentary, so I don't know what's up with that. lol)

Yay i love Todd as a VA as well and thanks to him they didnt have to recast Ace which would have been awful, this would also make sense as to why they decided to get One Piece 3d2y out of the way as well

Sounded fine. It wasn't a very long speech. Thought you were talking something a bit bigger. It's weird: I keep fluctuating on his voice. I loved the preview of it in sabaody, but I didn't like it in Jaya.

I just finished the set, It was really great. Doflamingo continues to be scene stealer anytime he appears in the dub, this pretty much making me hyped for the dub version of Punk Hazard and Dressrosa arcs to see more of Doflamingo in the dub. I also like the dub voice for Whitey Bay as well. The scenes with Buggy and Mr. 3 in the dub are keep getting and getting better in my opinion.

In the history of the One Piece dub, I don't think I've ever seen so many voice actors credited in each episode. It fits up three entire screens, with two screens of names credited to characters, and then an entire screen worth of additional voices. In some episodes, it must have been tough to decide who should be credited.

More name mispronunciations unfortunately on the second disc. After Coby witnesses Akainu in the backstreets killing a fellow soldier for deserting, another soldier arrives, and in both English and Japanese, addresses him as Admiral Sakazuki. In English, however, they stressed the wrong syllable, like SaKAzuki, rather than SakaZUki, as it's been thus far.

In a later episode, when Luffy takes on Jango and Fullbody, Jango mispronounces his own name, twice, as "Jayngo". Unbelievable.

When Whitebeard meets Luffy and flashes back to his latest encounter with Shanks, Shanks' line about whom he gave his right arm to is altered in the flashback. Here, he says he gave his arm to a kid. I believe in the original episode, Shanks said in the dub that he gave his arm to the new era. Haven't had a chance to compare the subtitles to see what was said in Japanese, but perhaps the line was altered due to the flashback having different lip flaps than the original.

Other than these few consistency oddities in name pronunciations, the script and acting is thus far incredible on this set. I especially like how Garp and Tsuru play off each other on the first disc.

On another side note, the English One Piece logo for the new opening "One Day" looks very nice, and matches the same way the Japanese logo kind of "fire phases" in.

Look at the original version. The logo comes in with a fire effect. He's just saying it's actually replicated well with the English logo.

Finally watched the end of Impel Down. The flashbacks, as usual, ruined it for me, but my girlfriend was crying her eyes out (she had no idea Bon's time was up).

Episode 468 commentary features Joel McDonald, R. Bruce Elliot, and Kyle Phillips. Phillips mentions the One Piece Wiki, and is aware that Marco sort of appeared in episode 151. He says that the husband of a random FUNi employee voiced Marco in that episode. Although a bit new to acting, Phillips has been an audio engineer on One Piece since episode 37, and he's a big fan.

Joel mentions how he and Mike share directing responsibilities, but they both try to ensure all episodes have the same quality control, so that no one can watch an episode and be like, "Oh, that must have been a Joel episode." Sadly, that's exactly what we can do. :-(

Not a single clue. I don't think a reason has ever been given. Might have been a personal choice by FUNi so they could trademark their own logo for any One Piece products they license and distribute, to differentiate from existing 4Kids products still out there (which uses the blue logo), or Viz (which uses various colorizations with the Luffy I).

so I finished season 7 voyage 6 yesterday…rightstuf took 5 days for delivering(is that quick?)....nothing very special in it except the part of bon's farewell was good..made me tear up at least...buggy's voice was at some points too childish for my taste but overall it was upto the mark..hyped up for the marineford(FINALLY!!)
and i guess the new set is already out..need to save some belis for that now.

You know I'm going to be very honest about the whole Joel vs. Mike debate. I don't really notice it THAT much and I probably wouldn't of even caught on to the change if it wasn't so pointed out on these forums. If I'm being fair to the dub as a whole it has gone through multiple stages since it's inception.

Chronologically (what was dubbed first):
Season 3- While the casting was spot on we had a lot of translation oddities due to dubbing a 143 episodes in and having an alternate Toonami dub with 4kids terminology. Even when you watch the dub in proper order the Skypeia portion seems to regress slightly since everybody's voices are a little "newer" there.

Season 1- When McFarland first started this part of the dub wanted to make itself distinct from the 4kids era so it seems a lot more harsher language was used in this part oddly enough when we hit Season 2 the script did the extreme opposite and tried to blunt some of the harsher language with more general audience terms.

Season 4-5- Acted as a "Golden Era" where the dub truly found it's groove and most of the characterization and scripting was spot on.

Starting with Season 6 while still having consistently good dubbing there were portions that seemed a little generic. Overall the dub still feels more natural than many long running dubs.

I for one have been overall very pleased with the dub through Impel Down and the start of Marineford. I really don't see any complaints about lacking energy or whatever. I more or less had the same enjoyment watching the dub as I did the original despite a few glaring errors on the latest set that were already pointed out. Long running dubs always have issues here and there. It happens during the translation phase and some things just don't carry over. I could complain about minor details like them not really keeping Whitebeard's laugh (though I think in his case I wasn't attached to that laugh anyway) or other small nitpicks but I can also say there were areas where I feel the dub was on par or even surpassed the original such as portraying Sengoku's emotion or the comedy with Buggy and Three. Then there are cases where I personally still lean toward the Japanese actors such as with Crocodile and Doflamingo but at the same time I've slowly but surely been warming up to the dub versions. I'm starting to get John Swasey's approach to Crocodile and I felt like Robert McCollum's approach to Doffy this time around was a huge improvement. It's like he read some of my comments I posted during his appearance in Sabaody or something because he really did everything I asked for and more.

I get why people like Flamingo with a softer voice but the rough-ness of the Japanese actor really adds intensity to his insanity and personality. Not to mention his devilish laugh. Though just like in the Japanese the actor added a more gruff approach only later on. If you look at his Japanese voice in Jaya it's also much softer and more reserved. So Robert McCollum's progression with the voice really shined for me this time around. I don't need him to be as deep as the seiyuu, so long as he meets the same intensity and insanity. His speech on the latest set gave me a feeling of satisfaction and he is even channeling the laugh a bit more now as well. So huge thumbs up to him and the directors and I definitely look forward to seeing more in future arcs.

Iwasn't a fan of Bruce Elliot's earlier portrayal of Whitebeard (shown in the flashback to episode 316 on this set). Like I thought originally, hearing him get into the role over a number of episodes sold me on his performance since I think he's really captured Whitebeard now. It's hard to explain but something about the "attitude" he had this time around was a bit more preferable to me than in his earlier scenes. I also like their approach to Akainu. It fits his character very well.

You know, I may have not noticed this due to his limited number of lines, but was Gold Roger always super generic pirate-like in the dub before? I mean, in this set they really hammed him up and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Thoughts?

I really don't care who's directing the dub as long as it's the same faithful and well produced dub that it's always been. I honestly don't see any difference between the two and I feel like people are just looking for stuff that differentiates the two. The dub is good and it doesn't matter who's directing it, can we just nip that in the butt? All the conversation about the dub lately has been like that and we should enjoy it rather than look deeply for differences between the two directors.

I agree the dub has a;ways been good to me and i have never ever thought who is directing what and what not, the one thing i will agree with is that the Skypeia Arc does feel different than the others especially with Zoro saying single sword stlye
