Richard Lyons from Negativland also died today.

Awww, Google did a nice tribute to Prince on their homepage. Very nice.
-
I can't say that I was a avid fan of Prince's music, considering the majority of his work was before my time, but I will always fondly remember Prince for the "Trust" song that played during 1989 Joker's parade (also, the "Partyman" track before that). Regardless, I offer my sincere condolences to this family and fans worldwide. Rest in Heaven, Prince.
But, as my plastic surgeon always said: if you gotta go, go with a smile.

Bowie died and in cosmic accordance Antonin Scalia was also taken.
Prince has died, and he is at least as big a loss as Bowie, bigger really given he was younger and had a cleaner lifestyle.
So the trade off…what will it be. What absolute bastard will be dragged from the mortal plain to make up for this complete and utter cheat?
For instance I honestly on some superstitious level uncharacteristic of me now genuinely expect this to be the year that Bashar al Assad gets killed.EDIT:

I can't believe that was so long ago, his halftime show. Still one of the better ones I've seen though and I never even particularly liked his music much.

Well I've heard how arrogant and what an ass Justin Bieber is , but didn't know any details until now.
Bieber commented on an Instagram tribute to Prince by musician Musician Andrew Watt (r.).
“Today waking up to this news I am truly beside myself…devastated...the last of the greatest living performers...my guitar idol,” Watt wrote alongside a photo of himself playing the guitar while wearing a Prince T-shirt. “His connection to ALL his instruments yielded a sexual transcending aura.”“Well not the last greatest living performer,” the 22-year-old “Sorry” singer posted.
It’s not clear if Bieber — who has not publically commented on Prince’s Thursday death — was taking a jab at the icon’s music, bragging about his own work or a making a snarky, tone-deaf remark about how the “Purple Rain” star is no longer living.
For his rep, I'd say Bieber is being arrogant, bragging about himself.
I would just snark off that someone needs to slap this man-child, but I have no doubt hundreds of Prince fans are already lined up. -
I read that as him simply pointing out that Prince was literally not the last of the greatest performers ever as to disagree with Watt's assertion.
But of course you know how things can be made to look when you're being ambiguous and somewhat unnecessary as fuck.
-
There's nothing wrong with what he said. I don't think he was implying he was as great a performer, just that in his opinion Prince wasn't the last greatest performer. And while I hesitate to say he's right people do overrate artists a lot after they die and I'm sure it's gotten on Bieber's nerves as much as anyone else's.
-
He might have been talking about himself, but maybe he wasn't. He's right, he isn't the last great living performer, there are many. I'm not one to give Beiber a pass for much, but it does seem like this time, people are making a mountain of a molehill.
-
Whether he's right or not. Bieber needs to learn when to shut the hell up lol. With his track record of being arrogant of course a lot of people are going to take it the wrong way lol.
-
I don't know. Yes, I dislike Justin Bieber (he tries too hard) and think he's a jerk. Seriously who spits on fans of the human variety.
But I do think people are overreacting. Even the Beatles had been slapped on the 'boy band' label when they were around and when John Lennon died boom greatest bed evar sob sob sob sob there are no decent bands left cry cry. No I am not saying that they suck. Its just that a lot of singers get labelled God Tier when they pass away because its when people pull out their rose-tinted glasses.
I think, or hopes that he just means that there are still many great music performers out there who are alive and breathing oxygen, but unfortunately one of the great ones, Prince had just left us. And I don't see anything remotely offensive with such a statement. It seems to me that the media just likes to paint him in the worst possible light and make his every harmless comment some sort of atrocious blasphemy or something. Chill.

The Beatles started with the boy band label (and look and sound), and that was mostly with older people, they definitely didn't have that by the other end of the 60's. By which point they were the center-point of the 60's rock explosion and massive generational icons for the Baby Boomers in the US and UK.
John Lennon dying didn't invent a sort of hype, that already existed during the band's lifespan.I agree with the sentiment, but it's possible to anti-hype in response as well.

Justin Bieber just doesn't have any tact.
THE last greatest performer? No. But ONE OF the last greatest performers, yes. So shut your mouth, kid, and leave people to their grief.

Ah thanks, that was the point I meant to make but failed to do so. Bieber was being tactless, he could have countered with correcting them the way you pointed out, by saying Prince may have been a great performer but he wasn't the last one. Instead he came across as being arrogant and insulting to many.
Of course people have different tastes. Personally I wasn't really into Prince, liked a few songs but can't even remember their titles and never got into his movies. So I'm not exactly a fan. But I do not deny Prince was talented, very much so. Its a natural reaction for fans to say the deceased star was 'last of the greatest [insert performer's role]' when they are in mourning. I said that several times, like when George Burns died then again when George Carlin died.
But what Bieber said to that one comment makes it sound like he was saying 'Nope, your dead guy isn't so great as you think', and that's just arrogant -
and never got into his movies.
Purple Rain is the only one that people actually care about. So you're not alone aside from that one.
Even Purple Rain is overrated (the movie), it's a cheesy bizarre melodrama that's best viewed as a seriously extended music video.
The album itself however is just flawless. -
Probably not a big deal to anyone who doesn't live in certain parts of the country but the writer of the Mister Softee Jingle "Les Waas" passed away today.

My thought during my single full viewing of Purple Rain was "is this what Prince thinks of himself? If so holy shit lol".
-
I remember thinking 'its better to listen to, than to watch' as I turned it off. And that it wasn't his acting that I got bored with, it was the movie seemed to be dragging on with little plot. I know my sister and some friends disagreed with me, they enjoyed the movie.
I really cant remember the names of the songs but there were 2 or 3 songs from Purple Rain that I liked. And no, I can't remember if the title song was among them. LOL
edit= went to youtube to listen to the song Purple Rain to see if it was one of them….and no, it wasn't.

Let's Go Crazy? Darling Nikki? When Doves Cry?
AHA… When Doves Cry was one of them! Thank you!
I didn't even need to go listen to it again (though I did anyway!) to know that was one. In fact its the one Prince song I loved the most. Its just been so long since I've heard it I couldn't remember it. I'll have to listen to the other two to see if they were among them. -

Oh wow…. one of my favorite comics artists just passed…. Screw you 2016.....
He was one of those comic book artists who worked on The DC Animated Universe as a storyboarder and artist. Look at his art and you'll see hallmarks of the "DCAU" Style in there... Aspects he no doubt contributed... He played a very big part in shaping my first exposure to these characters, and starting a love affair with them that lasts to this day. I'm really sad right now, actually tearing up at this news.
Just like the late great Dwayne McDuffie before you sir, we lost you far too soon.
RIP.
To anyone out there I reccomend checking out both the comic and the film version of "DC: The New Frontier" also called "Justice League: The New Frontier"... it's an amazing story and a callback to the Golden Age, and a contender for Darwyn Cooke's best work (Which is hard as he's had a long and amazing career) -
^Saw news about his cancer yesterday, saw unconfirmed twitter statuses about his passing, and now it's confirmed.
; _; RIP
