Actually, while Plinkett is pretty dismissive of Jar Jar as "some cartoon rabbit", they acknowledge that he's in no way shape or form the worst thing about the prequels, and that he makes more sense than most things in those movies.
Jar Jar is a simpleton who stumbles around and makes poop jokes and its juvenile and unfunny and pandering and lame, but at least you get him, he's straightforward compared to the all-encompassing storm of crap dialogue, hazy motivations, terrible directing and confusing political lingo that constitutes the rest of the prequels.

"Without mentioning their appearance or job, describe this character." WHich they then can't do for Qui-Gon or Obi Wan or Amidala because they have no personality. But if you'd done Jar Jar?
Obnoxious goof who thinks he knows it all and is clever but really isn't, ostracized and disliked by his peers and only tolerated by others, but has never really left his hometown despite his bravado. Simple and carefree, but loyal to his friends and willing to fight when the stakes are there and it comes down to it.
See, solid character right there. And the fan edits that take out the annoying voice and trim down the antics, he's quite good. Yes, it's impossible to ignore those problems in-film, but when you get down to it, he's by far the best defined and most interesting character in the film, which is probably why Plinlett didn't spend much time on him (aside from him aving already been the easy punchline for a decade… but he's just a symptom, not the cause.) With Watto in a close second, once you get past the cartoony Jew-ness of him. (Once again, an alien language filter pretty much fixes him.)
-
We all hate Jar Jar because of that FUCKING HORRIBLE VOICE.
http://sw7x7.com/episode-389-giving-jar-jar-binks-an-alien-voice/Not perfect, but MUCH better.

I am 100% behind this theory. It is my new head canon.
https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/3qvj6w/theory_jar_jar_binks_was_a_trained_force_user/
-
Awww…if that's the case, I really wish Lucas didn't chicken out and kept Jar Jar as the potential big surprise evil Yoda villain because, to his credit,...that would be something I PROBABLY wouldn't have predicted as a kid. Also it would give the title "Phantom Menace" an interesting new twist.
Yeaaaah...I would really dig this idea if Disney somehow twisted it to their favor in their sequels and found a way to make the prequels a bit more compelling as a result.
-
I'm so in on this theory. I imagine Jar Jar would have to have some sort of Force Lightening-esque transformation to make him more sinister-looking as a villain or else people would still have trouble taking him seriously.
-
It's funny how the second Clone Wars series did a lot of work to make Anakin likable and not a douchebag but had to make him snap back to asshole mode to line up with RotS.

Star Wars Rebels:
! Rex is back to kick some ass. His reunion with Ahsoka, omg, i loved it.
! 2 new Inquistors, 1 voiced by Sarah Michele Gellar.
! I remember from the prview, the 2 of them are gonna face off against Ahsoka with her 2 white lightsabers, i'm so looking forward to that. They're gonna get owned.Okay, i've calmed down from fanboy mode

Rebels is a pretty solid show; I had my doubts when it first started but it's definitely grown on me.
! Seventh Sister will probably put up a pretty good fight since she's more than likely Barriss Offee with her tattoos removed.
-
My only real question about Rebels is why do the visuals look so shitty compared to Clone Wars? You look at the lighting, shades and colors in CW, every location was thematic and it was super cinematic and nice looking.
In Rebels it just looks… kinda fruity and generic cartoony. Its a real step down which is weird since most of the people from CW are still involved.

For all the guff Lucas gets, he genuinely loves his creation and was willing to spend as much money out of his own pocket to make it look as good as possible; the first three episodes that made up the movie had a combined budget of around $9 million and the show got more expensive as time went by.
Disney sees it as a money making venture and Rebels has a fraction of the Clone Wars budget as a result.
-
Ahh. Budget cuts. Cut out the color grading and are just letting the CG render on neutral for everything. Makes sense.
Sucks, but makes sense.

Budget cuts are also why so many Imperial officers wear their caps over their faces; the animators don't have to bother creating individual faces that way. Plus the Steve Blum thing.

! I doubt she is Barriss.
In spite of her actions in the Clone Wars, she never allied herself with the "Sith" or the darkside. She was a Jedi, that grew disillusioned with the actions of the Jedi during the Clone Wars, and she made a valid point when she was caught.
! Though its possible it could be her, who knows? We'll just have to wait and see…. -

! Though its possible it could be her, who knows? We'll just have to wait and see….! There's several things pointing towards that though.
! * The simplest and weakest thing is that Offee and the Seventh Sister are both Mirilans.-
While the usual Inquisitor method is to try to kill Jedi on sight, Seventh Sister's priority was using Ezra is to lure out Ahsoka Tano, who has history with Barriss Offee.
-
The Inquisitor seems to be about the right age to be Barriss.
-
The Jedi who was used to lure her comrades into a trap was Offee's Master; Offee herself could have been the one who lured Unduli into that trap in the first place.
Plus there's the out-of-universe fact that the original plan was to kill her off in The Clone Wars but Dave Filoni vetoed that because he had "plans" for the character. As is, we last saw her prior to Order 66 with a grudge against the Jedi and have zero confirmation of her death in the years since.
-
-
Well there's always the Mira Jade theory.

! Project Shantipole is canon. though how it was done in Rebels was different than in Legends but we still got the B-wing or Blade-wing as it was called.

I was playing around with a 'Darth Maker' when something occurred to me that I had never really thought about before. Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Yoda, Mace Windu, even Luke Skywalker by Part VI- they're all called Jedi Knights, yet the only Jedi that ever held a rank of nobility was Count Dooku- and he ended up turning to the Dark Side, where all of 'em have the title "Darth".
-
If I remember correctly, Dooku was the last of his line and allowed to keep his old title as a result. Most Jedi would have had to give up that sort of connection to their past.
Those generated names are certainly something; they're no Darth Teriordezine though.

Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how light sabers could work.

"If you have laser guns, just shoot the person. Why walk up to them and have a sword fight?"
-
Wrong right off the bat Tyson. The title card clearly says "A long time ago", not the future. Clearly in the past you'd never think of shooting lasers!
-

Well that's only if you didn't know how much more practical and effective the lasers would be.

We're less than 1 week away at this point…
I'm getting super excited for this!!
I mean, I REALLY Hope the movie is good ok, but no matter what this is gonna be awesome for me since I'm seeing the Marathon showing at Harkins. All 7 movies.
I've never seen the OT in theaters at all, not even the 1997 re-release, so that alone is kindof a big deal for me.... I consider Empire Strikes Back to be my favorite movie of all time, so.... yeah.... super hyped one way or the other.
-
I now have tickets for The Force Awakens. In 3D, which is something I usually don't go for, but looking at the trailers this movie looks like it might actually benefit from it. Also yesterday and today I rewatched Empire and Jedi in their original theatrical versions (A New Hope I've seen so many times over the years that I find it hard to sit through the whole thing anymore)… So nice to be able to watch Jedi without that god-awful CGI musical number in Jabba's palace. Like, to hell with the Hayden Christensen ghost, that is to me the worst change Lucas has ever made to these movies.
…Also even in the original version of Jedi, I think the Anakin ghost makes little sense. Like, you can say that he clearly did not look like Hayden Christensen anymore when he died, but... he never looked like what his ghost does in that scene. The Anakin Skywalker we saw in the movie was bald and covered with scars. The ghost… I honestly never even recognised it as being the same person. As a kid, seeing that scene, I literally just found myself asking "Wait, who's that guy?"Anyway, I'm still not completely sold on The Force Awakens as a movie, and I still feel it is a movie that does not need to exist. (I mean sure, that's technically true for EVERY movie, but you know what I mean.) That said, from the trailers, I am at least expecting it to be a fun movie, and as long as they don't pull anything massively stupid like that theory that Luke will be the villain or have the emperor/Vader return from the dead, and as long as the overall quality is at least on par with Return of the Jedi, I shall probably be leaving the theater quite content. I don't think any of those should be too much to ask for.

For those who can't or won't watch the movie right away, for whatever reason, there's a handy little add-on for Chrome.

Peronally, I'll enjoy the movie a lot more if I'm not sitting in a crowded theatre with loud kids, loud non-kid fans, loud idiots and cheering when Millenium Falcon first appears.

I'm so with you on this. The Harry Potter premier I went to was so annoying with the cheers and screams anytime a characer first appeared. By contrast, the Hobbit premier I saw was quite enjoyable. Fans sang at the beginning, were well behaved throughout the movie, then were hilariously outraged at Smaug's cliffhanger.
I feel like Star Wars' fan base is somewhere between those two. It'll be less bad with future movies.
-
Early opinions seem to confirm my view that this movie, while good, is hampered by the fact it wants to give a handjob to the bitter star wars fans who never forgave Lucas for the prequels. I knew that this was gonna happen so at least I am prepared for it.

On the topic of crowded premieres, I'm catching a 1:30 A.M. showing precisely to avoid that kind of stuff.

I like how robin and nami are the same exact character. Reminds you of the fact that there's just one main female character in the entire trilogy.
Really hoping Rey/Captain Phasma don't suck.
