Don't agree with Brook. That whole bit with Giolla was very fresh material for Brook in that it focused on his own wierd artistic sensibilities along with his craftiness. Now Brook shows up for two chapters after being absent for over a year and he already sucks. Sure.

The main reason we're getting a separate focus is because this is one of the few islands where there is no present Big Bad and no one is currently trying to kill/capture them. It's also not like there's much else for them to do on the island outside of taking in the warm reception. It's not like they even know where Raizou is so they aren't going to be poking around for him. They went to this island because it's where Law and Kinemon wanted to go. That mission is accomplished, so why not take a breather and regale in some recent history on the island?

I do understand in being annoyed only in the sense of Sanji. Now that is an annoying dangling thread.

The problem with early lengthy flashbacks is that it tends to erase any mystique too soon. The motivations are suppose to be confusing up until it is revealed. That's what makes these character interesting. The "origin story" is held off until later.

So far the flashback here is less about "what happened" because we already know that from what was spoken earlier but rather to showcase and hype Jack. This chapter is more dedicated to showing what the Zou people are capable of, but more importantly, it is building up Jack and his crew's decisive counter-attack. Those details aren't all that important, granted, but eye-candy and the visual depiction is still appreciated. The only real question the next chapter may reveal is what stopped Jack from completely demolishing the Kingdom.

I can see why some aren't all that interested in this portion and want to the "next phase" the Straw Hat saga to begin, but I don't much mind the shift in focus.

If that's the case then I hope Jack stops getting beaten so often soon…

As for Brook... I don't find this gag funny. Personal preference I suppose. I feel like the set up is there it COULD be funny but it's just "meh" for me.

It really isn't a ridiculous claim at all. We didn't get an infobox when Luffy's bounty was shouted out by a goon to be 500 million, nor did we get one when a random gladiator stated Chinjao's bounty. Nor did Jack protest anything, but rather simply stated that they don't keep their mouth's shut.

Jack has been actually beaten once that we know of, and that was by a former fleet admiral, a current Marine admiral, and a strong vice admiral. And before his defeat he was even able to take out some of their ships!

This chapter wasn't a beating at all. One of his attacks was deflected, and then he was attacked and got right back up. Even if he gets attacked some more in the next few chapters, he still wins in the end, as we know. And no, using Caesar's weapon, which he had at his disposal, doesn't mean he's weak because of it.

Still, Minks claim they would have pawned him if it weren't for poison gas. You could say he failed 2 times before even getting formerly introduced. Not the best way to kick off a threatening villain, even if his enemies were strong as hell.

I expect he will justify his infamy in the following chapters, but I can somewhat understand the disappointment some people have of Jack.

Still, that full mammoth form is hardly suited for actual fighting. His limbs are supporting his weight, and he can only fight by moving his head and waving his trunk. A trunk that also makes him vulnerable, like we've seen. He's probably a lot more dangerous in his human form, and even more so in hybrid form. All those wounds and bandages had to come from something. Not to mention minks were captured and tortured for a while.

Of course, the gas could have helped him pacify the minks. I guess he's just an asshole.

-He probably had a good chance to take out an admiral, although sengoku and fujitora was pushing it
-Dude is on another level compared to the doflamingos of this world

Interesting though is that he's been revealed yet we still don't have a very good idea what he looks like. Given that he has a Mammoth zoan, we aren't given a whole lot of more distinctive features outside of the trademark eye and the hair. He actually kind of reminds me of Masked Duval in this respect (before his reveal). He also was big on the crazy eye.

It'd be more accurate to say that Jack sunk two ships in the time it took some combination of a former fleet admiral, a current admiral, and three vice admirals to beat him. I wouldn't have been surprised if Sengoku, for instance, sat on his ass observing the whole time.

I think Jack is stronger than any individual on Zou, but his minions seems to suck pretty hard. The Minks are probably saying they would have won because they could use a team effort to beat Jack whereas he might win in a one-on-one. Regarding his mammoth form, I think it's like pre-TS G3 in that it's his strongest for but not necessarily the one best suited to fighting. Jack probably favors it because of shock and awe and how it can cause maximum destruction.

The straw hats have been almost entirely passive from Luffys encounter with the guardians in 805 and onwards. From then they've been moved to the fort and continually talked at.

They entered the city, wondered what the hell happened, and are now being told what the hell happened. Now, if they are still being told of Jack's attack five chapters form now, that's a problem. But it looks like the story of Jack's attack will probably end like next chapter.

The story could've been written differently, so as to have some more active developments concurrently with the exposition. Like, Luffy, Zoro and Franky have gone ahead to look for Raizou, and are shouting for him in the woods near the Guardians. Or theres been established a lingering presence of Jacks cronies, muttering about his return. Or maybe the rest of the crew are kept a long way away, and Wanda exposited while they were traveling and gradually overcoming some hazards or challenges, maybe as a result of Jacks destruction.

It's pretty much outright said the Swirlyhats chased off Jack's men after he left. It would be really dumb of them to stick around alone in a hostile nation.

This might all be my burning desire to see more Straw Hat adventuring after so long, but then again, they are the main characters-each capable of carrying a series, by Odas words- and they deserve their spotlight, as they're the whole reason I'm reading this manga. I get that after +800 chapters its hard to think up new beats and interactions for the same characters, and a whole lot easier to just whip up fresh characters with whatever personalities and designs you desire…
But the first half of Punk Hazard is just so flipping good you guys. I might've come down a bit hard on the second half, but the first big chunk has some truly standout crewmember scenes. Its the series in top form, and for that reason I can't help but hope Zou can recapture some of that.

I have a pretty good feeling there's going to be a fairly long flashback of Sanji and co doing just that. Well, at least how they saved them all.

He probably used the gas to take out the day minks, as they planned to deplete Jack's stamina with the Guardians.

I suppose Jack defeated the Guardians by himself (which caused the torture scene we've seen), and then used the poison gas later.

Considering the circumstances and current lack of conflict, it's understandable. Everything is desert and everybody is too hurt to pose an actual threat. And one half of the island is currently off-limits.

They did go through the desert city exploration and island's resident hazard, though, as well as a minor clash with a few residents, so it's not like there's no adventuring going on (heck, even the climbing the leg scene was decently focused, with a small twist and mystery happening during it). Night is already up anyway, which means the exposition shouldn't last long.

Law is also at the Whale Forest right now, so the SH will be probably heading there next.

Maybe it's just because of being burnt out by King Riku, but i am very super interested in Inudog and Nekocat. They have these fresh designs and they can fight for themselves really well apparently, plus there seems to be a lot of backstory between the two and even with Shanks. What can you ask for more? They even went against Kaido's crew so it's really hard to think of something else they haven't done to amaze yet. Probably there will be a sobstory at some point, and i hope that will be great too. Also, in a way they remind me of Dorry & Brogy

Well, Inudog and Nekocat are more proactive characters than King Riku who was really as interesting as cardboard and was shilled too often by other characters for being a good king while many readers found his pacifistic stance to be unrealistic. It makes me think what Riku would have done if Jack showed up on his doorstep instead of Doflamingo. I think he would have still stuck to his guns and Dressrosa would be a massacred mess.

I also found that King Riku had traits that was seen in other past rulers, but executed in a way that came off as cliche and nothing that really made him stand out.

Zou is having 2x kings as strong as Kyros. If they would be using their power together Jack would have died.

Also I am almost certain that Luffy will fight Cheshire King somewhere during this arc.
Guardians said that Fluffy is lucky he didn't stepped into Whale forest at night, so probably Neko does not have as much of a soft spot for Straw hats.

I want to see this fight even if it will be interrupted. Luffy could show off that other technique he worked out as alternative to using Gear Fourth after his talk with Rayleigh.

Oh and art lately is eyecandy. I adore all of it.

I hope that Soda has good time while having those breaks and that he learned to rest at least a bit..

Yeah, not to mention the fact that we have to female characters who seem to be pretty good fighters. I have really grown to like Wanda who I think will be more important as the arc goes on.

Also screw the Rikus' pacifism, and all hail the proud race warriors that are the minks. Even though yes the Riku's story was sad, the only ones who I could consider interesting are Kyros and Viola. The latter didn't get as much focus in the second half and was demoted to a support role. Also one thing I would like to say is that Kyros' beating himself over his past got kind of tired and the fact the citizens knew all long just made that plot point pretty, annoyingly pointless. King Riku and Rebecca were just wishey washy cry babies who kind of got on my nerves. It actually made me enjoy Doflamingo more than these guys because at least he was fun to watch and hear. Yes, he is a sadistic,homicidal maniac, but at least he is a more interesting character to know.

Lots of hype does mean that we are getting into uncharted territories when it comes to strength of Jack.

I think that he and Sanji will get short fight during flasback where Sanji will not be used as hype tool but rather Soda will underline with it that bounty does not reflect strength of a person. To balance things back after 1bln bounty reveal.

Think for yourself. If Duke was capable of going at it for most likely few hours with Jack and then we seen Duke heavily panting we can say that his stamina would run out faster than Jacks who did not shown any signs of getting fatigued. Their power was comparable but their stamina was not.

I do not believe that Jack is stronger than Doflamingo, I do not believe that dukes are stronger than likes of Kyros or Vergo, thats all. Page you posted has nothing to do with logical thinking, its only first picture that came to your mind after seeing what I wrote. Think a bit if I am not right when it comes to Dukes, Jack and where guys like K and V are in bigger picture.

Ha, had to re-read the chapters from 805 to this one in one sitting, very enjoyable.
Love the scene where Nami slaps Luffy after he calls the Lion Mink a stick in the mud (??), and also of Nekomamushi slipping his paw under his belt ala Al Bundy lol

Jack is hype though, I think that bounty is warranted.

He's strong as shit, has a freaking mammoth zoan…I mean, I think this is underrated. He takes the form of one of the largest and heaviest land animals since the dinosaurs, can most likely clad himself in haki and just rampage through pretty much anything, stomping and crushing people to death, which I'm pretty sure he has done countless times, enough so that he earned that bounty. There's no stopping a bull, rogue, elephant coming at you even today unless you kill it or tranquilize the crap out of it. You also have to note that after Duke Inu stopped Jack's nonchalant trunk swing, Inu was wheezing, and Jack was just a bit surprised. Then he gets tossed hard on his back, in mammoth form so he's already heavy as shit, but just gets back up seemingly un-phased.

He sunk two Marine battleships under the watch of an Admiral and former Fleet Admiral, with another strong Vice Admiral on deck, out on sea to boot. I might give the white and blue men the benefit of the doubt though: Jack could have sunk two battleships really fast before the Admirals realized what was happening. I wonder how Doflamingo reacted to all of it...Wanna go see Kaido who's crazier than Jack and explain to him wtf happened to his supply, or Impel Down...probably the latter, if I were him.

A fitting personality for Jack the Drought, who has the ability to back it up, for being the right hand of a man whose hobby it is to try to commit suicide repeatedly. Dude's hype.

I'm a little late to the discussion in this matter, but I think the main reason why people Like or dislike Zou to the moment, is the way of setting the story so far. Generally Oda do something like:
Arrive to the island
Present the island and its people
Present a conflict
Give Flashbacks
Finish the Conflict

But here is going like backwards
Conflict already happened / started
Give Flashback while present the island people

I mean, yeah, it is not classic One Piece, so it is easy that people don't like it, but also is something different that try to no bore people.

I think the main reason this is presented this way is becase we are still in the "Pirate Alliance" that was presented in PH, and Zou is going to be a lot shorter, maybe like Drum, present a new crewmate, and add more fuel to Kaido's and Wano's problem before Wano being the last part of the Alliance

Of course it would. Depending on how long those guys have even been called Calamities. Maybe there were only 2 for a long time, but then Drake proved himself in these last 2 years. You can do a lot in 2 years. Just look what SH did in a short time before the time skip.

If Drake is one of Calamities, Oda has one less interesting character to make. It would also make sense that some other Supernovas are making it big in NW.

At first I thought that Jack would be this uber powerful Admiral level threat but then I remembered two things. First the bounty is not based solely on strength. Caribou had a bounty of 200million and he was mediocre at best. Second the island where Luffy trained was full of powerful beasts who were stronger then pre time skip Luffy but weren't that impressive afterwards.

So I wouldn't be surprised if Jack or at least part of him is a beast from that island. Or just a regular ancient DF but that would be more boring. But it would be more interesting to see his mixed human/mamooth form since I imagine it would be far more powerful and a much better fighter then a regular mamooth
