Where's that implied?
After Wanda's flashback in the last chapter Brooke explicitly says that Jack's rampage is the reason why the words samurai and wano bring pain to the minks.
In what Nekomamushi said about a Samurai being in the island
!

I believe he's just talking about an intruder being on the island in general. Brook's words really wouldn't make any sense otherwise.
@Daz:
But this has pretty much just all been told to us up front, or in the earliest extended flashback sequence I can remember in the entire manga. Once the crew had climbed the elephant there was an extremely brief scuffle with the minks, then they got transported to the fortress, and they've been briefed ever since. And theres little hint what Luffy and the others are gonna do, once the talking is over.
I've been enjoying the discovery of Zou so far, yet I can completely relate to that: the crew feels a lot more passive than they have been in past arcs. It is however a welcome change to have flashback elements intertwine with the story so early: Oda keeps changing the narrative structure over time, which I think is important for such a long-winded series. Whether those changes are for the best remains open for debate, of course…
As for what the Straw Hats do next, I'm imagining three possible outcomes :
Whichever happens, I certainly hope that we won't get a flashback-only arc.
On the subject of bounties, I really think people need to drop the nasty habit of matching strength to Berries. It's just like when Kidd was revealed. We've had 3 chapters that show how Jack is an all-brawn brute who will jump any pretext to smash entire cities and disregards civilian casualties or any attempt at negociating : of course he'd have a higher bounty than someone who keeps their collateral down to a minimum.

Of course, it's only natural that a guy who causes destruction out of pure meanness everywhere he goes would have a higher bounty than a pirate who rescues princesses and helps royalty reclaim their throne on every island he visits.
It's surprising how many people still see bounties as pure reflection of character's fighting power.
I´m 99,9% that thing at the side of Jack´s head is a horn so I made a new design prediction, based on the visual information we´ve had so far
Gonna made a colored pred. in the afternoon
Looks beastly. Good work.

yeah, but here he referes to a "samurai" in specific, because before he talked about intruders in general
Awesome chapter - really psyched to get this arc going! This color spread is definitely one of the coolest ones in the series thus far; absolutely loved the little details with smoke coming out of Brook's eyes and Luffy having a lollypop instead of a cig.
I'm curious if Jack's bounty is the real deal given the exchange with his crewmates… The 1 Billion bounty may seem like a lot, but it isn't really all that outlandish given what we've seen of Jack's disposition towards destruction and civilians since we know that bounties aren't completely indicative of strength. Ace had a 550 million bounty in just 3 years of piracy, after all; imagine if he were to have escaped and spent the last 2 years burning down every single person in his path and reducing islands to smoldering ash - surely something like that would double it.
The SMILE users abilities were interesting with the partial transformations. Those odd markings seem to be a trait given to them as well. Not sure if it was a mistake but I noticed in Sheephead's case that the pattern has moved from the upper part of the arm to the lower in a couple of panels.
I wonder if it's just a subset of SMILEs that have that ability, if all SMILEs have that ability, or if it's just an ability all zoans actually are capable of. Because I think the assumption was that Momo ate a SMILE and not a real Devil Fruit, but he doesn't seem to be transforming in that manner at all.
I just wanna point out that the fruit Momo ate wasn't a SMILE made by Caesar, but rather an "Artificial Devil Fruit" created by Vegapunk.
Sucks that we have another break. When is the big end of the year break?
Just read this on another forum. Luffy's trying to make sleeping Inuarashi bite his own ear.
http://readms.com/r/one_piece/809/3091/8
Lower right panel. LOL
really strange that we already have a break…it's way earlier than usual..i hope oda doesn't have some kind of health problems
Maybe they do a break now so that it doesn't happen right before or right after the end of the year general break. Making it even longer.
Maaaan.
That is one pissed off Cheshire Cat.
heyyyy, where's my cover with red leg Zeff and his reaction to Sanji alive only bounty? Did they forget about it?
I may be wrong on this one, but wasn't it stated that the breaks are mandated by Shueisha themselves and not Oda?
Mammoth beast may be tanky but slow and heavy. Now I wonder how Jack uses his power in half-form which is obviously the reason why he has such high bounty. Haki is a must but he must be able to "awake" his power somehow. Getting ready for this.

Nah, that was a rumor. Greg debunked it here.

Color spreads always interrupt cover stories. We'll probably get that one in the next chapter.
Hmm, so just a subordinate has a bounty of billion, this makes me excited when is the Monster Trio (and maybe even Usopp) going to exceed that.

I suddenly remember reading that thread most of which I've forgotten somehow. Thanks for the heads up.
I just noticed Brook got a SK (Soul King) in his pants in the colorspread.
And since I am mentioning details, I never got a chance to point out this adorable one from some chapters ago:
!
Usopp raises his hand as he is speaking and the dog gives his paw
Not saying he's crewmate material due to the scar.
But you just did it! And now I… damn :/ well, he looks too much like Jinbe, so I will focus on that and not get excited.
@Daz:
Etc.
And in all those cases we were bound to eventually get flashbacks showing that happened in those places. And those flashbacks would normally come in the climax of those arcs, killing the momentum. The way things are being done in Zou, once things start there will be no flashback to hold them back, not to mention this way feel a lot more… organic I guess. Try to think about it this way.
Tontatta: lisping
I never knew that. Thanks!

Can't wait to hear that roar in anime.
I haven't watched it for half a year, but still.
Neko reminds me more of Alina from Dark Souls (granted, inspired by Ches as well).
That fox mink musketeer is my favourite. That evil grin and 2 blades… I'm a sucker for dual wield.
Also, wonder if any SH will recognize the dog guardian and compare him with Sanji's zombie.

LOL, nice catch dude. It's these easily-missed little details that Oda fills One Piece with that makes it such a great and enriching read.

Well hopefully after the Jack incident we may get a Shanks flashback (probably near the end of the arc?) with inudog and nekocat and that would be super awesome to see more of Shanks in general
It seems Nekomamushi's distinct speech pattern (Tosa dialect) is missing in their translations… Considering the dialect and his line "the man who awaits the dawn of this world", Nekomamushi is probably based on Ryoma Sakamoto, one of the most famous patriots in Japan.
.
Oh thanks! it's always fun to imagine how they sound like with a certain dialect.
!
Can you tell from the way they talk who was the guy who was being tortured? was it Duke Inuarashi perhaps?
nice color spread.
it's hard to be bones on zou lol.
Minks rules !!!
oh yea i hope for a color spread where jinbe and neko chillin together…...
HOLY FUCK! 1 BILLION? damn, son… Then Yonkos must be at least around 1.5~2 Billions or even 3! and Dragon at least 5+ Billions(the price of the ope ope no mi) since he's the most wanted.. damn.
I wonder how much Roger's was when he was still alive? Rayleigh must be at least 2 billions.
Bounties are given per threat level, if Jack is one billion it's only because he is a jackass who kill people for fun and mess up countries, just like Kid had a higher bounty than Luffy yet he is not stronger that he can be.
I don't think Yonko's have bounty active at least, cause they obviously let the yonko do what they want to do, they are untouchable, Dragon bounty should be so high that jack is a tiny drop in the ocean.
Something tells me we saw Raizou, maybe even more times, but since he is a ninja, it's hard to spot him, harder then pandaman.
@uniaka:
Something tells me we saw Raizou, maybe even more times, but since he is a ninja, it's hard to spot him, harder then pandaman.
That would be awesome… "sadly" the one piece fandom is so obsessive that every little detail in every panel gets hyperanalyzed, so unless raizou is just a random background character I say that can't happen
@uniaka:

I think that Raizou is hiding/ living on top of Whale Tree that seems to be guarded.
It would hype his skills a lot if he managed to sneak through forest full of Mink guards.
I wonder what kind of person Jack is beside being all "I refuse!" and destroying everything, in this chapter he looked a bit silly in some panels(for example he is kind of short Mammoth lol) and since Fishman Island I am afraid for Bad Guys - back in the day New Fishman Pirates were really hyped till one chapter making them all look silly came.
opens chapter up
EXCUSE ME, WHY IS ROBIN SMOKING ON THE COLOURSPREAD
other than that, good colourspread. I like it when there's less characters crowding them.
The disgusting smoking wasn't the only part that bothered me. Her feet look like a man's feet as well. Idk why Oda always has trouble drawing female feet. Aside from all that it's pretty cool tho.

@S.C.:
Then why bring it up?
Like I just said. An exaggeration of the truth. It's to intimidate the people of Zou.
One billion? Even Ace had only 550 mil!
Man, I can't help but wonder how big bounties the emperors must have. Getting real hyped up for Jack as well now.
Are we reading the same story? There's been a ton of character development up front, and a whole bunch of arc bits are being set up. Plus exploring the island and setting up places that will be visited and shown later in the arc.
Really? Yes it's setting up characters but it's all flashbacks. Not a single thing is happening in the present. Is this whole arc a flashback or are we ever going to find out what's going to happen this arc?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
@Daz:
At this point I feel like I could almost copy-paste my chapter response on a weekly basis:
Boy, I'm really looking forward to this whole thing getting started.
Don't get me wrong, theres already been a flood of new characters introduced. We've been shown a good deal of the mechanics of Mink Culture. We've gotten a big info-dump on Kaidos crew, smiles, and all that jazz.
From the perspective of the Straw Hats the arc has no momentum, no forward thrust. To use my analogy from last week, its like arriving at a new video game Hub, and walking through half an hour of lore and cutscenes, waiting to not only start your quest, but to get your quest. This is all a matter of personal preference, but after the monolith that was Dressrosa I was looking forward to some more straightforward, simple adventuring from the crew, and a nation on the back of a giant elephant got me really excited. But then Law instantly declares that this is the island of minks, robbing their reveal of any surprise. Again this is personal preference, but I like the exposition, character introductions and reveals are doled out gradually as a result of exploration or progression towards a goal, or at least explained alongside some more active developments.
At this point after arriving In Drumm, Dalton had been downed in Wapols invasion, and Luffy was mountain climbing with two incapacitated crewmates.
We'd had the entire sequence with Ace, were trekking through a desert, and only now gradually learning about the rebels and civil war.
We'd taken a wild lobster ride from the white-sea encounter with Wiper and Gan Fall to Angel beach, whereupon we'd learnt about dials, half the crew had been abducted to upper yard, and Gods Justice had been introduced.
Merry had been pronounced dead, Robin had dissapeared, and the crew was marching on Franky house.
Law had dueled Smoker, the crew had been separated and mind-swapped, were in the process of rescuiing some kids and a samurai, and and almost everything was a total mystery.
Dressrosa had a laundry list of objectives for the crew going in, and still found the time to launch Luffy into a surprise Coliseum tournament.Etc.
What I'm saying is I just really want the crew to start doing something.
I'm SOOOOOOOOO glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I remember seeing you say this before and I agree completely.
Really? Yes it's setting up characters but it's all flashbacks. Not a single thing is happening in the present. Is this whole arc a flashback or are we ever going to find out what's going to happen this arc?
I think the what's going to happen is known from the set up we have. Brook has talked about how the Minks don't like hearing Wano or Samurai, and the night minks seem pretty much against any intruders. With night here now, I think the conflict is going to be set up where they fight the night time minks, and that the whole thing of minks being separated into time is going to end with the two rulers going to become amicable again. The tension will be when the Minks find out that Luffy's group is with the samurais, and that makes them angry about it. We will probably have a small scale civil war over this stuff. Also, I see Momo becoming a hostage.
The disgusting smoking wasn't the only part that bothered me. Her feet look like a man's feet as well. Idk why Oda always has trouble drawing female feet.
Talent is a mysterious thing pal. Some say that Géricault didn't know how to draw feet either.
Really enjoyed this chapter. Starting off with a great color spread (love that the smoke is coming out of brooks eye), the 2 rulers who swap shifts because they hate each other, then even showing us the second king with an awesome entrance. Inuarashi stopping Jacks blow like it was nothing was also great.
I can't wait to explore Inuarashi and Nekomamushi's past and how they got to where they are now. Cat/Dog, Rage/Reason, the two kings are a great duo!
Still no hint towards Sanji's situation though :(
As someone pointed out in another forum, given the similarities between Edward Weeble's hair and Jack's hair, maybe Jack is the real father of Pseudo Newgate Jr. Just food for thought

I could see Oda drawing a funny/emotionnal reunion between father and son. Then Luffy fights the two of them.
Oda apologizes for many breaks in the author's comment. He also says he is doing his best for next summer (probably implying ONE PIECE Film Gold).
! I remember his apology for breaks in 2008 when he was busy writing the scenario of Strong World.
Can you tell from the way they talk who was the guy who was being tortured? was it Duke Inuarashi perhaps?
I can't tell about it since Inuarashi's speech pattern is not distinct from other people…
Rereading the chapter.. it's interesting how the dog duke describes the cat duke. Perhaps some clues into how they started fighting?
Glad to see he's going to put serious work into yet another shitty movie.
Cynicism aside, he does have to make a living. For himself and the industry.
Dog duke reminds me of Luffy if he was a dog.
I bet the conflict between Duke and Neko was something stupid like who catched the biggest fish or if either the North Pole or South Pole was colder.
Glad to see he's going to put serious work into yet another shitty movie.
Cynicism aside, he does have to make a living. For himself and the industry.
i think that's a bit harsh.i mean, they were not cinematic masterpieces, but i think they could at the minimum be considered decent.
though i agree that i'd rather oda focus his energies on the manga instead of movies, but they probably help a lot in promoting one piece
That colorspread is incredible. The chapter booring again… break again? Good thing he at least apologizes.
Do you think Chopper's DF is Hito Hito no mi Model mink since his human mode is full of fur? Even Luffy called Zou, an island full of Choppers. Also Chopper learning Electro is likely because it works in defibrillation and revival of nearly dead patients.
Nekomamushi is a freaky thing. I see some chesire cat influence on him.
also LOL still no sanji

I don't know how you correlated those two together that makes Chopper learning Electro any likelier than it already is, which, at this point, isn't at all.

No. Its not boring at all. If you say its boring show some evidences.

Ok, maybe they aren't as crappy as I proclaimed them, but they are nothing special. They always play it safe with the plot and there's nothing that would make me want to watch them again and again. Even the fights are nothing spectacular.
Best I can do is hope there's going to be side content as awesome as Chapter 0.
No. Its not boring at all. If you say its boring show some evidences.
I personally think the chapter is fine and I'm liking Zou so far, but are you seriously asking someone to provide evidence for their personal opinion on the chapter? What, do you actually think that you'd be convinced that the chapter is boring if the guy showed you "evidence" of what he thinks is boring?
Y'all need to chill sometimes.
