If someone else had to draw One Piece

Hey guys and gals. Let's say that Eiichiro Oda was unable to finish drawing One Piece himself and you are put in charge of deciding another manga artist to take over art duties. Let's say you can choose anyone in the field of manga, living or dead and it wouldn't ruin anything else they are doing. Now I'm not trying to start a whole debate about if it should even be continued if Oda can't do it. This is just a fun little thing to do. Who would you choose to take on this tremendoes task?

I would probably go with Yusuke Murata. He is the artist most famous for Eyehsield 21 and One Punch Man. He does some real great action and we have seen him take on the character before, and I think it worked pretty nicely. Another one I can think of who could probably do a good job is Kōhei Horikoshi, author of My Hero Academia. Now, no one could really do it better than Oda, but remeber this is just a game.

One of Oda's assistants, who no one here knows the name of, that's living in the style day in and day out, actually knows where the story is going and at the very least can match the backgrounds.

The guy doing the current spinoff series would be well suited. If he wasn't doing things small-bodied hed be a pretty close match.

Well, obviously Mashima for what is the mere drawing style. But since he sucks at everything else (plot, characters, unpredictability, passion…) it's better if he stays as far away as possible from OP. Some who could make a good job are Urasawa or Inoue, or even Ohtaka. And I even throw in Sorachi...I'd love to see a OP "gintamazed" lol

I would really like to see Yasuhisa Hara, the illustrator of Kingdom, draw One Piece. I think the fight scenes and the large scale drawings of the islands would look really cool.

I don't like Mashima very much, but he's been using that style since at least 1999 with Rave Master. I'd chalk that up more to both artists growing up on Dragon Ball.

I'm gonna give another vote to Murata.
He's one of the best artists out there and probably one of the few who could get as much info on a page as Oda does.

The guy Robby mentioned (I had no idea about that series, it's freaking hilarious), certainly has the chops in terms of keeping the basic style too, I'd like to see him try at least.

And Rave Master didn't look near as much like OP as Fairy Tail does. Characters had big pupil eyes there and tiiiiny noses… and it looked more like Shaman King than One Piece. But by Fairy Tail they'd taken on the dot eyes that most OP guys have and gained nose bridges. Not to mention the sheer number of blatantly ripped off character designs.

One Piece didn't become popular right away though. Rave Master starts to evolve to the smaller pupils-prominent noses thing a few years into its life. I genuinely think Mashima just touched up his characters' ugly faces.

Eyes have shrunk a bit since he's started but not nearly the size of Luffy or Zoro. It feels more like natural progression rather than copying. They both looked like Dragon Ball imitations that grew as the authors gained experienced.

For character designs, Mashima just ripped off himself on that one. Haru-Natsu, Ellie-Lucy, Musica-Gray, etc. are practically clones aside from a few tweaks. Gildarts and Shanks are the only ones that actually look similar to me.

Yes it did. It was #1 in the weekly polls pretty consistently almost from the start and had its anime up and running by 99. Nowhere near as big as it is now of course, but it was a big deal pretty fast.

Happy is straight up Chopper. That one guy with the book that looks just like Kuma. Most of the characters in general.

I haven't read FT in years so I no longer remember names or specfics and I'm glad for that. But I know at the time I was reading it there were a ton of example.

Well, there's no doubt there are plenty of One Piece copycat series out there in various forms. Anything as big as OP is bound to have imitators in both drawing style and writing style in the backwash of OP-mania. More importantly, are any of them good imitations?

As for a different artist, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a potential successor artist Oda & co have in mind on the off-chance a change would have to take place. Though I can't think of a whole lot of manga examples where different artists/writers picked up where the original artist left off (for whatever reason), though I'm sure it must have happened many times.

Oh well, thanks for explaining it. Ok, so if it's just drawing sure Mashima is the most similar. Of course a little change in drawing but in a better way makes me also bend towards Murata…I love his drawing style and he's certainly one of the most talented in this art, so he gets my vote as well.

i have to agree,quality of fairy tail aside,i don't think fairy tail art in any way resembles one piece.it has a bit of a exaggerated feel,with big eyes and all.aside from gildarts,who is basically shanks ver 0.5,all the other characters have distinct style.doesn't really feel that his art will do well with one piece,which has a more simplistic feel,imo.

I don't see how you came to that conclusion since neither look anything like Dragon ball. Didn't Oda say he purposely worked to create the artstyle he uses? Mashima's artyle was not inspired by Dragon ball either. FT did look a lot like OP at the first but it started to differ more when Mashima improved as an artist. The old Rave Master style looks nothing like Fairy Tail. This was proven with the crossover.

All Oda's editors for the story, and Oda's assistants for the art. The story should be shorter than Oda would've done, only with the most important parts. I would want to see his sketchbooks partially published too.

Actually you're right, the spin off guy's art is very close to oda's.

Togashi being responsible for the characters and story would be an interesting take.
The drawing must be done by someone else, or else it would need sooner or later a second replacement^^

But i assume Oda has a lot of the stuff that is coming scribbled down in various notebooks and his assistants would be the best suited ones for this task.

My face would probably explode from witnessing too much awesomeness if Shimabukuro drew One Piece. He is the unrivaled king of oomph to my mind. That said, I wouldn't really want him on the story. Despite how much attention to detail Toriko has, it's been going seriously awry lately, in a complete opposite way to OP's timeskip issues. Oda's pacing may have been slow lately, but as an on-the-fly adapted video game-making proverb says: a slow-paced story eventually pays off, but a rushed story is underwhelming forever.

Oda has said in interviews that he draws everything that moves, his assistants probably handle the tones ands fillings and unimportant buildings in the backgrounds.
Not saying that he doesn't employ competent assistants, just that they are not necessarily the best options to take over for him.

Also, gonna add Togashi to the list of people who could handle the art.
It's gotta to be a perfect world version where Togashi actually works but it could be nice. He doesn't usually get as much info on a page as Oda but he's certainly great when he finishes his drawings.
He also knows how to make the same characters look as simple as possible and then portrait them in a very realistic way, usually for awesome attacks or scenes.
Oda also uses some kind of contrast for that type of scenes. One of my favorite scenes in the manga is because of such contrast.

I didn't look for any example from Hunter X Hunter but if you're familiar with the series you should remember at least one instance of this "technique".

If you re-read/re-watch the East Blue Saga Nami was always pointing in that direction.
Always saying how bad pirates are and then being amazed that Luffy was actually kind of a nice guy.
