Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)

What I'm saying is romanticizing the role of a helmsman delves way too into that of a shipwright. A helmsman's role involves steering a ship on a steady course, which is the whole basis for Franky's dream. He's the one that will bring Sunny to the end of the Grand Line.
Giving Jinbe a 10 for helmsman is completely unwarranted. Nobody in the series has pointed out a natural talent in steering a ship like they have with Brook's gift for playing music or Franky's ability to fix anything. Jinbe's skills at being a helmsman are just as good as Chopper's. His greatest talents are in Fishman Karate and Jujutsu, being above every other marital artist in the series. Why would he be steering a ship during combat when he could be doing something nobody else on the crew can do like throwing water spears or rallying fish allies?

Those numbers were just my estimation for Jinbe assuming he would be the official helmsmen. I am including Lifeguard, Firefighting, and some of the other skills that I mentioned previously to be a part of being a Helmsmen.
Franky's dream(Chapter 737 pg 7) doesn't require him to be the helmsmen and drive the Dream Ship himself. He would be fine if someone more capable decided to take the position of Helmsmen.
Franky originally said: That Ship won't be complete with just the blueprints! It'll sail off, cross many seas, overcome many battles and hardships…and when It finally arrives at the "End of the Sea"..then it will be called a "Dream Ship"! One day when I successfully make the best ship, I'll get on the ship as a Shipwright. All to see that destined day with my own eyes!! The ship would probably be rugged by then, But it'll be shedding greater light than any other ship!!
How is Jinbe = Chopper when it comes to being a Helmsmen. He has more experience being in the New World. During the Impel Down escape he was the only one who was steering the giant marine ship..if someone was better at it then him then I am sure they would have been steering the ship instead.
-
It's still way too close to what Franky does. Franky's thing on the crew is the ship, giving someone else a job to steer his ship seems redundant, especially since the Straw Hats have never shown concern over not having one. It'd be like someone joining the crew as a nurse or a sous-chef. We already have guys perfect in those fields, why add someone else?

I admit that Jinbe hasn't had many chances to solidify himself has the best Helmsmen. Even when he was sailing towards Marineford he was riding the Marines' Private route, the Tarai current. Jinbe did manage to ride that huge wave that they got stuck on in Ch 557. I don't know much about giant marine battle ships but that seems like a pretty decent feat.
Helmsmen and Shipwright are two different fields. Having Nami around overcompensates for not having the best Helmsmen. Luffy has a small crew so there might not even be a need for a Helmsmen. However, Blackbeard also had a small crew and he had an official Helmsmen. Maybe Black Beard needed a good helmsmen because he didn't have someone like Nami.
Right now I am leaning towards Jinbe being a Helmsmen. More like a Maritime Pilot + Lifeguard + Diplomat + Tactician + Underwater specialist + Sea Scout + Adviser + Fishmen ..etc but could be summed up as a Helmsmen.
Only thing that is a safe assumption for Jinbe at this point is that he would be the ultimate go to guy for underwater operations. He is aware of his surroundings and is intelligent + strong, which makes him capable of filling a wide variety of roles. Luffy as of now isn't recruiting Jinbe for a specific role but because he likes and respects the man. We probably still have more backstory left for Jinbe. The backstory might tell us how he got that interesting looking scar.
I am guessing that working under the world government, being one of Whitebeard's allies, and working under Big Mam has given him more than enough experience sailing in the New World to make him a seaworthy sailor. He seems like he could be a better Helmsmen than anyone currently in the crew just based off of experience alone.
Maybe he would be put in charge of the Submarine?
What are the chances of Luffy just saying that he is the Fishman of the crew? lol Maybe Jinbe himself says something or does something that solidifies his official position after he joins. This would be similar to how Usopp became the Gunner/Sniper after shooting that cannon on Merry for the first time.
-
It seems again the official role is being downplayed. Everyone is using their greatest asset in the role they use on the ship. Now my question is what is Jinbe's greatest asset? A role that involves being UNDERwater at times or a role ON the boat most of the time? The answer to me is clearly the role involving underwater be it Lifeguard, Scavenger Diver, or whatever else that would use Jinbe's best skill and gives him the most freedom.
The Dream directly correlates with roles on the ship.

Do you have any guesses to who this other person already introduced is? You thinking before or after timeskip?
Before: Smoker, Vivi, Law, Jewelry
After: Kin'emon
I would be leaning towards Jewelry out of those I can recall. Also what do you think Jinbe's official role on the ship will be?

Jinbe=Master Tactician=Make it possible for Fishman Island to be under the Sun/end discrimination against Fishman.

Representative of the fishmen, ambassador.

I'm still rooting for Vivi. Reverie keeps getting played up and now we have CP0 that can easily function as a villain group for Mariejois. Plus, I'm fairly certain she figured out the 3d2y message since she was already immediately suspicious of it and she didn't appear too phased (the opposite actually) in the "Where are they now?" series where she was presumably holding a paper about the SH's reunion. Basically like she expected them to resurface at the time. She may have done some training of her own and acquired a DF or something.
Also, it appears we're already working on the dismantling of the WG what with Fuji's dogeza and Kaido's war with whatever that will entail. Maybe at the Reverie the WG will propose something Vivi will adamantly oppose (like say the usage of an ancient weapon against Kaido) and she'll end up getting excommunicated and possibly hunted depending on how much of a shitstorm goes down about it. Could also be why Cobra is at home sick since if he's there and gets caught in the shitstorm, Alabasta in general will have left the WG and been made enemies. If it's just Vivi then they can still be left alone regardless of whatever fucked up thing goes down at the Reverie.
A LOT of conjecture admittedly and the reason I'm sure most Vivi supporters keep a tight lip but keep in mind this is all just some hopeful thinking until we get some more concrete information. I personally wouldn't really want anyone else besides her and Jinbei.

Lifeguard would be my guess as well. Jinbe's pretty much been helping others this whole time. Trying to save Ace, helping Luffy, helping fishmen, helping the people/creatures in his cover stories. On a boat this would mean saving the people drowning.

Combatant is also an valid option.

I think so. That is basically Zoro and Usopp's job now.

Regarding Jinbe, what do you think his dream/goal will be? Carrying out Ace's request of taking care of Luffy? First fishman to travel around the world?

Regarding Jinbe, what do you think his dream/goal will be? Carrying out Ace's request of taking care of Luffy? First fishman to travel around the world?
If you are asking me then I think Jinbe will be the Guard. Ships need guards. Plus like I stated on page 677 Guard can be expanded on with words with the word guard in them with Lifeguard being the most important one. So if he is the Guard what is his dream/goal? It has to be something that sums up Queen Otohime, Fisher Tiger, and Ace's requests plus whatever else in his next flashback. So then what is a common theme between all those requests? I'm not sure.
Ace asked Jinbe to take care of Luffy after Ace's execution. So…Jinbe protect and guard Luffy's life. Which he did with the blood transfusion. Which also correlates with Fisher Tiger refusing human blood. His hate was too strong. He admitted that Otohime was right though. Otohime wanted humans and merfolk to coexist peacefully under the sun. She was going about it peacefully but was killed regardless of her pacificism.
So Jinbe must learn from the mistakes of those three to make some amalgamation of a goal. Jinbe will need protect the people who will change the world for ALL species for the better. No more slavery. No more segregation. He failed to protect/save those 3. He will not fail guarding Luffy.
And for those thinking Jinbe will die, he CANNOT die before completing his dream. If he protects Luffy near end costing him his life, he would still have protected the man who changed other species relationships. Or something like that.
-
Regarding Jinbe, what do you think his dream/goal will be? Carrying out Ace's request of taking care of Luffy? First fishman to travel around the world?
It seems almost clear that his dream is some combination of Otohime's ideals and Fisher Tiger's. Jinbe did tell Neptune he has reasons for wanting to join Luffy but as a character in the story can he see that Luffy's antics would ultimately help the world in the long run? We as readers know that the Straw Hats change lives for the better, be it the good guys or the bad guys. Of course Jinbe being as smart as he is could have done all kinds of research on the crew and realized that inadvertently their adventures are righting the wrongs of the world and he wants in on it.
-
Yeah, it's probably something related to Otohime's wish concerning race equality, good call. I wonder exactly how he hopes to achieve it and when he considers his goal achieved.

Only if Law doesnt asks him to join his crew first. Law seems to be a sucker for ninjas too.

But usually people like Stephen are much more bias than fans are. I feel like people at least in the wiki try to find the original source while Stephen simply tries to localize in a way that "souns good" to him.
For example on Miss Bakkin/Bucking, he simply went with "it kinda sounded like Buckingham so I called her Buckin". And with Weeble he went with Weevil, rather than the toy brand he's based on which caters to the original katakana more and just looks more accurate to.
Have you considered that I'm actually doing MORE research than the "fans"?
Why is it that going with Buckin based on researching possible name-thematic connections (the most common reference associated with the word is Bakkingamu or Buckingham, which happens to be a place in London just like Newgate) is worse than using the katakana Bakkin, yet it's perfectly okay to go with "Weeble" because that's what people found when they googled it? Despite the fact that all the Seven Warlords are named after animals, his name is a perfectly valid translation of the word Weevil, and isn't it also interesting that weevil is "zoumushi" or "elephant bug" in Japanese, because he maybe he got that idea for his new character as he was thinking about elephants?
But no, I'm just making this stuff up because it sounds good.
-
So.. do these toys even exist in Japan? Or it's just like the time that someone who tought that wano is going to be based around "samurai jack"?
-

Don't get me wrong, I just say this as constructive criticism, because I want the english version to become as good as possible. I spent over 1000 dollars to buy the Viz volumes (damned shipping taxes) but I still feel that while translations are it feels too localized. A lot of text (mostly in the earlier volumes) was altered and changed severely (such as changing all pirates to having pirate-like accents and vocabularies).
To be fair ever since you started translating for Viz it has been TONS better than before, but I feel that many things are lost in translation with Viz.
For example: In the japanese version Weeble/Weevil uses "Shiroshige" instead of "Shirohige" because he has a running nose but in the Viz version this was completely absent. This changes the original jokes or messages conveyed by Oda and to hardcore fans this can mean a lot. In many other volumes sometimes certain jokes are made yet the english version does not translate or explain them (thing that could be done easily through a note) and in the end it just makes an akward scene that makes no sense.
Well anyways, with Newgate it starts to make more sense. However the reason why Weeble makes more sense is because other shichibukai animals such as Moriah, have been romanized as "Gekko" instead of "Gecko". A Weeble is a toy brand and Edward Weeble has the shape of such toy, which is far more similar than the Weevil creature. I actually reserached myself about the Weevil when the scans came out and included it in one of my articles but I still felt like Weeble was much closer.
The claim that "It sounds good" was something that you said yourself on the podcast, so I was just abiding by that, I never meant it as an insult.
Viz has a very, very long track record of mistranslating names, some even to a very high degree, but I feel that with you at least it's improving bit by bit.
For now we can only wait for a databook, I'm sure some like Weeble and Buckin/Bakkin/Bucking are going to be surely shown.
All of this is meant as a way to make the manga better and to give the full original experience. Try to stay keen to the japanese version and keep up the hard work Stephen

To be fair trying to find the correct version of this names is surprsingly entertaining
Throwing myself into history books and encyclopedias to find the correct meaning is an incredible pleasure that One Piece is able to grant me. It's an additional layer of depth of research one can do on One Piece.By the way, if you don't mind me asking , what did you find for Karai Bari/Calai Bali Island in chapter 803? I've been looking on an atlas and apparently there's a place in India named Karai Bari but it seems too much of a loose end.

Genius Jester???
That for example is a good example in itself. The japanese version used "The Star Clown" (Senryo Doke), but was changed to "The Genius Jester" in the Viz version, even if it's a different meaning.
I understand that Viz probably wants a more "adapted" translation, but I think that delivering the original experience is what should be done in a translation such as this.

Moriah is "Gekkou-moria," aka "koumori" or bat. He's not named after the gecko lizard.
Why does his shape make a difference or invalidate the obvious animal connection? Are you going to claim that without a bounty poster we should say "Kurokodairu" because he doesn't literally look like a crocodile?

Adapting is a hard thing. I am not translator or anything, though.
Like, Kuma. Kuma is literally bear. It doesnt refer to "bear" it IS "bear". So when a japanese reader reads his name, they are reading "Bartholomew Bear".
Now we take this manga and publish it in the US. How will we adapt this? If his name is kept as Kuma, the regular reader who doesn't know japanese will never get what Oda was trying to convey. A note "Kuma means bear" could be placed there, but still the reader would not think of Bear each time he saw Kuma like a japanese reader will. In this case, by sticking to the original you are not translating the intention, the american reader will not have the same experience Oda intended for his reader to have when he named Kuma targeting a japanese audience. Also, regarding Weevil/Weeble, good find. But here is one thing, just because a character is named based on something doesn't mean his name has to be written the same. D.Gray-man has a character who is named after Aleister Crowley, his name is Arystar Krory. In katakana their names are the same, but romanized…
Eustass Kid is a good One Piece example of that (based on Eustace and William Kidd).
Have in mind that Oda is japanese, so it's unlikely that he will have other alphabets in mind when naming characters. The 7th Shichibukai was named after the toy or after the bug? Maybe after both! But his name is neither Weeble or Weevil, it's ウィーブル. In kana, what Oda uses, the name fits both, and that's what probably matters to him. How it will be romanized is probably just a secondary thing to be decided based on pure aesthetics.EDIT: Another thing, I think people are trying too hard to connect Shichibukai to animals. Yes, the original 7 (original as in they were the shichibukai when the manga started) are obviously based on animals and that is even part of their names (crocodile, flamingo, boa, kuma, jinbe, kou mori [wasn't aware of this one], hawk) but where is Teach's connection? Buggy? Law? None of the new Shichibukai were named after animals or had animal themes, so I don't think Weevil has to be just because he is a Shichibukai (still, I like the zoumushi possibility better than the others).

Not sure about Teach, that could just be something overlooked or considered unimportant. But Trafalgar Law starts with "tora" or tiger, which Oda made a little clearer when Luffy started calling him "Torao" (which I adapted to Traffy because there's no "o" in Trafalgar and it's meant to be something Luffy could remember). Buggy could be "bug" I suppose? Or maybe that falls under the same Blackbeard category. But unlike those characters who were introduced previously and then later fit into that mold, and therefore might not have an easy animal naming angle, this is a brand new character so it can easily fit into the pattern.

This is why Stephen's translations have always been given the utmost respect. Bat, I never new that and it fits so much better!
It's like any fans reaction to Little People and Dwarves right? I know everyone says Dwarves but it isn't the term being used not that?
What Stephen puts down, I whole heartedly trust. The Wiki is the devil by and large, it's to easy for random contributors to add their interpretations to events, abilities or anything really.

Little People or Dwarfs is the correct translation. They're definitely not Tolkien Dwarves.

When a boat is sailing it becomes a lucus for the interaction of two elements and two forces. The two elements are air and water. Jinbe's element is water and he has great judgement and plenty of experience sailing in the New World which is another thing that is essential for a driver. The coming together of these two forces is felt by the helmsmen Nami can feel the pressure of the wind and guide the crew clear of unexpected storms and Jinbe could feel the motion of the boat in the water. The skillful helmsman understands the forces and by controlling their interaction he navigates the fastest and straightest passage through the water on his intended course.
Jesus Burgess just happens to be the Sternhandler/Helmsmen for Black Beard. Not sure if Oda took inspiration from the Bible or not but St. Matthew 8:23 says that Jesus often boarded a boat "and when he got into the boat his disciples followed him" Jesus walked upon the surface of the waters and was able to command the wind and the sea.
**Fishmen Island Arc had Noah and we learned about the promise Joy Boy made. Maybe there could be another connection with Noah/Jinbe's dream/and his official position? IMHO Being a Helmsmen to me is more symbolic.
Nami has history with Fishman, namely Arlong. Jinbe also happens to have history with Arlong. Usually the Navigator would have to have good communication with the Helmsmen since both positions are closely working on getting the crew where the captain wants to go. I would like to see Nami and Jinbe become the ultimate team when it comes to taking the ship where Luffy wants to..it would be great character development in the long run. This would also show how much trust Franky has in Jinbe since he would be letting someone else take the wheel with confidence. Franky also has history with fishmen since his mentor Tom was one.
A lifeguard would be a secondary role since it would only be necessary to save a devil fruit user when they are overboard..The role is a bit less interactive than what I imagine an Official Helmsmen to be.
We have never seen a pirate ship that had a Lifeguard..it is a secondary role most of the time. Why have someone like Jinbe who is more than capable of taking a role like Helmsmen be a full time Lifeguard instead?
I've mentioned in a previous post that Jinbe would be more like a Maritime Pilot who handles the ship during dangerous waters..The work functions of the pilot go back to Ancient Greece and Roman times, when locally experienced harbour captains, mainly local fishermen, were employed by incoming ships' captains to bring their trading vessels into port safely. so he doesn't have to be driving 24/7 But would be the go to guy when it matters most**.
Dude, Ive always thought Jinbe would be their Helmsmen the moment I saw him doing it after they stole the marine ship at Impel Down but the bold is verbatim why I think Jinbe will be the official Helmsmen of the Strawhats. Especially the part about Jinbe, Nami, Franky and Arlong. It's like everything comes full circle.
People always wanna make it seem like Jinbe's position on the staff has to correlate to his dream , but this was not the case for Brook. He's not trying to be the best Musician ever, he's just trying to reunite with an old friend, except he's taking the long way around. I feel like at his core Jinbe's desire for strong relations between human and fishman will come down to how he really feels about humans before he met Luffy of course. Of course his stance is less extreme than that of Hody or Arlong , but deep down Jinbe probably still holds a grudge against humans because of what happened to Tiger, or maybe even something further back in his youth.
The adventure with the crew will probably be just as much a peace of mind for Jinbe as it will be for the world at large when they see the famous Fishman Pirate , Jinbe apart of the young upstart's crew who's been making the most waves in the New Age of Pirates

I must say, I'm pretty curious about this Raizou guy that we're going to be meeting pretty soon.
With his whole ninja shtick, we're probably going to get a fairly unique design that'll be unlike any of the current SH members (then again there could be hundreds of similar ninjas in Wano).
His role as a comrade of Kin and Kan shows that he's also willing to leave Wano, which seems to be a fairly major issue for members of that remote and isolated nation, fighting off the rest of the world.
Basically, Raizou seems like he could possess all the same pro- nakama qualities that Kin has, but without the drawbacks that we know about (obviously, very provisional).
Coupled with how everything seems to be kicking off in The New World after Doffy's defeat, I imagine we'll be seeing our final 2 nakama sooner rather than later.
With Big Mom's tea party having happened over the time it took Luffy and Co to get to Zou, Jinbei may be freed up sooner than we thought, and with all the allusions to him being the tenth nakama, we'll probably be seeing the ninth fairly soon (since Oda said they would join in concurrent arcs I believe?)
It's all very vague as it stands, but I'll be very interested to see Raizou, and not only because of his connection to Kin, Kan and Momo.

Are you sure that it ain't both gecko and bat ?
Moria did turn his shadow into a gecko to finish Oars Jr.yeah,it probably has both
but his post was made to justify why it is localized as gekkou moria and not gecko moria..since earlier he said that weeble should be weevil since it's his animal reference (more than the weeble toys that don't think they had in japan..i'm in italy and i have never heard of them) -
I wouldn't jump in the raizo train just yet, we should have gotten a silhouette with the name drop, even if we meet him next chapter.

Meh, as it stands I'm just perusing the train times.
It may be a viable travelling option or it might derail spectacularly.
I can't wait.

I still want to know when Oda came up with the idea of Raizou being a ninja and rectoned his words from 700.

It's a pun, not a real place or reference. Listen to the podcast next week and you'll find out.
Yeah I did know about the Koumori reference, as @Maju says, it's quite mindblowing
However, Moriah has a double animal reference. Certain Geckos often inflate their neck to grow new skin and release the old one. During Shadow's Asgard Moriah himself performs exactly the same stance where he inflates his neck and holds himself on four feet, like a Gecko. What I'm saying is that Weeble seems much closer to Weeble than Weevil. My reasonings for it were this:
1. Weeble is a toy brand in the exact shape of Edward himself.
2. Usually I've always heard americans pronounce it like "Uibil" rather than "Uiibil", and Weeble sounded phonetically closer to the katakana
3. According to a cinematography book owned by my grandpa (yep, this is very old) in certain very very old american sitcom there was a character named Weeble (after the word feeble) which was considered "mama's boy", and who was a crybaby that always relied on his grandmaPlease, don't take this as an insult! All I am interested in is discovering the correct translation Oda would choose

Actually that's very simple. Japanese actor Ichikawa Raizo played a role of a ninja in the famous old japanese movie "Shinobi no Mono"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichikawa_Raizō_VIIIyeah,but we don't even know if those toys ever came to japan
also,i googled them and they are just kinda egg shaped..they don't really resemble weevil that much..not more than other kinda obese people we saw in onepiece..if anything from behind weevil resembles a gengar@Kishido:I still want to know when Oda came up with the idea of Raizou being a ninja and rectoned his words from 700.
well, kanjurou initially was a monk if we have to go by his initial silhouette..so he probably changed idea multiple times about how different those guys were.
also one guy in the chapter thread said that there have been some cases of samurais that doubled as ninjas too -

It's somehow strange that Oda called them 3 samurais and now suddenly a ninja... But whatever... Ninjas for the win.
Hope for some Kunoichis or Onna-bugeishas in Wano

Jinbe's overarching goals can correlate nicely just based on the fact that he would be joining Luffy, regardless of what his position is. I agree that Jinbe's core desire is for there to be strong relations between humans and fishman. He might have made a promise to Ace to watch over Luffy but that isn't his dream. I feel every single straw hat crew member "watches over Luffy". Watching out for each other is just part of being a good friend/nakama.
I could see the connection with Brook being a musician and his dream of meeting Laboon. He did mention that he wants to bring the last recording of Rumble Pirates to Laboon.
Hope that Jinbe made it to Zou or will be together with the crew for the Wano Country arc. There was plenty of time for him to go to Dressrosa and find out where Luffy went..he could have even gotten a piece of Luffy's Vivre card from Leo. Bart's ship took a long time to get to Zou as well since they didn't have a navigator and Zou was slowly moving away(probably making their overall traveling distance longer).
I am expecting the next Nakama to join after Wano Country.

I still want to know when Oda came up with the idea of Raizou being a ninja and rectoned his words from 700.
If Oda is half as diligent about his research regarding his own culture as he is towards other cultures, then he probably knows that historically, a "ninja" was just a soldier operating in stealth. Like a black ops soldier, they are still soldiers, they just happen to do some dirty stuff on the side due to necessity. Raizou could be a samurai, who is also a ninja. The two are not exclusive to one another.
Thinking back, Kinemon saw Robin's arm stuff and thought she was a ninja, right? Same with Nami's weather manipulation. Maybe that's an indication towards what Raizou's abilities will be like.

1. Weeble is a toy brand in the exact shape of Edward himself.
Like many others in this thread have already said:
1. We don't know if those were ever even in Japan
2. Weevil doesn't look like the toy as much as you say he does.
It makes more sense for Oda to follow a naming convention he has used in the past than to make a reference to an obscure American toy.3. According to a cinematography book owned by my grandpa (yep, this is very old) in certain very very old american sitcom there was a character named Weeble (after the word feeble) which was considered "mama's boy", and who was a crybaby that always relied on his grandma
You can't be serious. This is "My uncle who works for Nintendo" tier. You can't even bother to give us the name of the book or the sitcom? I'm sorry "It's in the book my grandpa owns, I swear" is not a good way to support your argument. Besides, why would Oda, a Japanese man born in the mid-70's, EVER reference an old obscure American sitcom that you can't even bother to give us the name of?
Call me crazy, but I'm gonna side with the guy who is a professional translator, has been translating the series for years, and puts in tons of research to make sure he is providing the most accurate translation possible.

Samurai is a noble title, it doesn't mean "COOL GUY WITH SWORD".
-
And yes trust me, I still think 5% of the pages on the wiki have fake information on them, but usually the spellings are waaaaay more accurate than the ones used by Viz.
The only accurate ones are the ones with official spellings written in English. The wiki tends to have long, unending discussions about spellings that don't have those.
A recent example is the use of double vowels like "ou".

A ninja could make for a good lookout. There could be a lot if gags correlating to being a ninja like popping out of a hiding spot in the ship at random.
Raizou does start with a R like Robin though. Not sure about his possible lightning theme though overlapping with Nami's weather powers.
