Is this season based on a book as well?
True Detective

If it's even half as good as the first I'll be good. This what I'm most excited for on TV right now.
-
Yes yes yes yes!
The teaser didn't tell me much about the story but it looks moody as hell.
Visual-wise it feels similar to the first season but that's not a bad thing. -
So what does it mean that Vince Vaugn is supposed to get second billing in this season yet the teaser focused more on the female cop?
-
Trailer's been up since May but what the heck, especially since I haven't seen it before today:
In cold sweat both due to anticipation and some of the more chilling scenes in this trailer. BRING ON THE VAUGHN-ASSAINCE

I'm getting home late tonight and also battling Treasure Cruise addiction, but will wtch it before going to bed. While I'm definitely not expecting as much as last season, I've heard some good things from reviewers who have watched a few eps. In just a few episodes last season it did more for me than some longer popular shows, so I'm looking forward to it.
-
Not that hot on the premiere. My biggest gripe is that there are just way too many storylines and it was kinda unfocused. First season felt so tightly written and was just focused on the dynamic of these two contrasting characters. Here, it felt so crammed. Doesn't help that I didn't really find any of the characters that compelling especially compared to Rusty and Mart from the first season which i was mesmerized by immediately. It'll probably start improving when the storylines converge more but eh.
And Vince Vaugh was serviceable. Nothing bad, nothing amazing, serviceable.
-
I enjoyed the first episode. The first season was brilliant but it took its time in parts and got dogged for being too slow early on. The way it ended seems to be pointing to things being fast-tracked. I had and still have pretty tempered expectations but am looking forward to next week already. The noir vibe is a good fit.

Double the seasons, double the detectives. Well Elvis will probably not be as developed as Ray, Paul and Ani.
And Paul isn't really a detective. I wonder how they will justify his involvement in the investigation. It's not his job after all.
Great episode. Not only we get a new case, but this season seems to play much more on crossed plots. And I like it…as long as they don't use too many impossible coincidences. So a few questions now:
-Is Paul's girlfriend the missing person that Ani was looking for ?
-In which war did Paul fight ?
-Around 17 min, there is a weird looking shadow near Vinci's sign. It looks more obvious with the video than with the pic. Symbolism ? This city is evil!
-Also Paul's eyes have a different size. You don't get this kind of thing at war, right ? He also mentioned that his biggest scar is from before the war.
-What did Ani want to do with her boyfriend ? That got me interested :) -
Finally watched the first ep! Yeah, it starts off slow and draggy, but it got pretty interesting IMO once past 'round the halfway point. ("ASS-PEN" - yeah I'm a dick, I laughed at that - so sue me)
[Hide]Also it was pretty cool to have the final scene tie the police main characters together.
Also, anyone gets the feeling all four main characters are trying to compensate for some sort of deficiency in their life? TVTropes notes that 'emasculation' is a central theme.
Velcoro (Colin Farell) and Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) are obvious what with the former trying to avenge his son in the most laughably hypermasculine ways and the latter going all NEED FOR SPEED due to… erectile dysfunction?
With Bezzideres (Rachel McAdams) and Semyon (Vince Vaughn) I admit I'm stretching to try to fit my theory: there are quite the hints for the former that life with her father wasn't so rosy (cultish backstory not unlike the first season?). As for Simeon... anyone else get the feeling he might be closeted? His conversation with Velcoro shows him focusing a wee bit too much on the need for women in "a man's life"... not to mention the cryptic look he gave earlier to the old man.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone who says this episode hasn't matched up with the first season. It's unfair to compare the two since they're meant to be very different, but it's hard not to since that first season had such an impact and we want more of it. Also, Rusty was a very intriguing character. And so far, we just haven't seen any of the characters be as complex as him yet. I thought Farell's character had some potential, but I don't know how I feel about him exactly… I mean,
! he doesn't come across as a sympathetic father trying his best to be close to his son given the scene where he essentially interrogates his son, and then beats up the bully's dad.

[/Hide][hide]I'm not sure about Woodrugh's dysfunction. I'm not disagreeing, I just genuinely don't know what his "Need for Speed" attitude was all about, and it just seems too much if it was really connected with dysfunction.[/hide]

@Mr.:

[hide]Wasn't that the whole point though? Like I mentioned earlier he was paying back in an extremely disproportionate manner. He seems more incensed at the fact that his son isn't a "strong guy" like he is rather than the fact he was bullied, and this is his twisted way of trying to compensate for the "lack of masculinity" in said son.[/hide]

[hide]Yeah kind of a stretch on my end admittedly, but not too far-fetched considering how angry and focused he seemed to be during the speeding scene.[/hide]

Do I see ghosts or does the driver of Frank reminds you of Christopher Lee? Also I'm eagerly awaiting the 3rd episode considering the heavy cliffhanger in the second.
Also also, this young motorcycle cop is extremely shady.
-
I'm optimistic that eventhough it's leaving something to be desired right now, that it will come back strong. It's a cool enough show to give it the benefit of the doubt.
On a bit of an unrelated note, I'm trying to design an interactive detective game with an element of choose your own ending, but I'm worried about running into some issues with functionality, specifically user interface and bandwidth. Does anyone have any advice for me?
-
So… Woodrugh and Velcoro continue being prissy pissy little ticking anger machines...
[Hide]… and did they just (seem to) kill off one of the main characters? [/hide]
-
! Daaaaamn! Well, he wasn't really alive to begin with.
Maybe the crow used special bullets that don't kill. I saw something like this in a movie. I think it was salt. -

Maybe the crow used special bullets that don't kill. I saw something like this in a movie. I think it was salt.! Yeah. I didn't see any blood from the shot. And Velcoro didn't cough up blood or anything eithet.
Think the rock salt shot was in Kill Bill 2. Could be wrong. -

First, duly noted that it is extremely uncool to quote myself, but it seemed like a good idea at the time to easily follow up on my question.
So I have been doing my research and I am thinking I might need to switch from my cloud host to a dedicated server to ensure performance quality. Does anyone have any input on this? I'm looking into web hosting options with 1&1, but I would love some feedback on what other developers here are using and what has worked for them.
And back to True Detective, I think it's important to keep in mind that it's an anthology series, meaning it is going to vary in scope and quality. It can't continue on exactly as last season, otherwise the show never grows. It's like when people criticize a band for putting out a new album that they claim sounds nothing like their old stuff, but they also criticize them if they put out an album and it's just the same stuff that they've already done. Growth only comes from trying something new. And when a high quality show starts off a season slowly, you can usually assume that it will build to something pretty great. So I'm going to wait and see before I pass judgement.

That was a really nice episode.
! Maybe I watched too much Arrow, but I take the Red Herring and say the evil man is an ex-cop-vigilante.
-
^Maybe Ray's father is faking his Parkinson.
So apparently Paul knows the secret of brokeback mountain
Franck is huuuuuge! I'm starting to like his acting too. -
Uuugh, yeah apparently Paul is gay. I heavily misread that and his behavior in the former episodes.
It seems he desperately try to cover that. Maybe even through this leaked incident with the woman. I wonder why, makes him more interesting to me. -
Regarding the new episode:
! I guess to close off the block was out of question because it would raise suspicion on the baddies? What a freakin mess! I sense long interviews, hearings and funerals the next episode…
-
Paul wondering if he had sex with his pal was so funny! He even started crying
And then he tries to convince himself that he will be happy with a wife and a child.About the last scene
! "Do we really need the whole squad ? "
"Better safe than sorry…"
Only 3 survivors
So fucked up. So many civil casualties. -
Oh man, the big reveal for Ray at this point is very convenient for the overall plot and drama of this series. Of course it's happening now when Frank figured out his private life -.-
Also, Pauls life and his character are still a mystery for me.
-
Do the opening's lyrics change every week ? I wonder if it is related to things happening in each episode.
-
I don't know, they definitely changed the lyrics this episode. I don't think they changed it before, mh, maybe just a little.
! Or they want to emphasize that this was a Wham-episode. There wasn't "Nevermind, nevermind" at the ending of the opening anymore. So like Ani said, someone has to care?
-

So fucked up. So many civil casualties.Hahaha when my friends and I were watching this we were all laughing our asses off screaming, "I'M NOT GAAAAAAY!" whenever he appeared… Pretty much the only enjoyable part of this season for me though. Not gonna quit now though!
-
My heart! I want more! But I don't know if I can handle it! AMAZING!
-
A sad but somehow fitting ending for this season.
! Did they found out who molested Ani? They packed so much stuff in every episode. Maybe I didn't catch that.
-
! Some very bad luck in this last episode. The recorder with all the evidences they need breaks, Ray's last message to his son doesn't connect, Franck dies because of an over-zealous henchman.
I can't believe that some of the bad guys are still okay. Hell the guy that killed two MCs is totally fine.
I guess there are some good news like Ani's baby, the paternity test and freaking Nails' new outfit.
But when I see the bad guys roam free, I can't look forward to a completely unrelated third season.
Just kidding, I can and I do. But I feel like we are missing the conclusion of this case. This wasn't even a show about the work of detectives in the end.
Of course, it was still amazing.
And like the yellow king mowing the lawn in season one, we got to see the crow doing his job in the middle of the season. Except this time I didn't guess at all.
