Today Terry Pratchett passed away, following a long battle with early-onset Alzheimers disease. He died with his family, and his cat, in his home.
Expected as it was, this still breaks my heart. Ever since a friend gave me Soul Music 15 years ago I've been consuming this mans work. Without hyperbole, I can say that Terry Pratchett has been a great influence on my life, on the person I've become today. He championed virtues of rationality, inquisitiveness, independent thought, and above all else compassion and humanism, and was the enemy of irrationality, bullying, prejudice and hate.
I can think of few worse fates than losing ones identity, ones self due to powers beyond your control, and though I won't pretend it didn't show in his latter writings, I will forever respect his refusal to let the disease limit him. I don't think a damn soul could've stopped Terry from writing as long as he lived anyway.
My heart goes out to his family and loved ones, and I can only hope that Terry, as a longtime advocate for assisted suicide, met the end at his own terms.
Rest in Peace sir Terry. The world is poorer without you.
