Sales figures of "Sonic Boom" are out… and they are not good. Sega's performance as a whole this year can be described as not good as well (from the information listed below).
! Sonic Boom has sold 490,000 copies worldwide on Wii U and 3DS, SEGA has confirmed. The company’s report doesn’t actually clarify if that figure is shipped or sold-in to consumers. However, it’s disappointing in any case, and Sonic Boom is the worst-performing entry in the series ever.Today’s information about Sonic Boom’s performance comes from SEGA’s latest financial report. Other interesting tidbits are as follows:
– SEGA spent $210 million on games development
– That is a 27 percent increase compared to the year prior
– Advertising expenses climbed 53 percent, up to $73 million
– SEGA is releasing 50 games by the end of the financial year in March, but combined sales of all those are expected to be about 5.4 million units
– SEGA initially expected to sell about 300,000 units of its four latest Wii U games
– That is now revised to 230,000, making it the weakest platform in terms of unit sales
– Full year expectations for 3DS 1,160,000
– SEGA’s revenue for the three-quarter period was $685 million
– After expenses, that lowers to a profit of $18 million
– SEGA is now organizing a sweeping business restructure, which will rebuild the corporation into three divisions, as part of a wider plan to “drastically improve profitability”
– At least 300 positions at the corporation are targeted for redundancy
– SEGA has set aside $125 million for the restructure costs
! – SEGA expects to lose $110m for the full yearhttp://nintendoeverything.com/sonic-boom-moves-490000-copies-other-sega-financial-results-tidbits/

only 500k on 2 consoles WORLDWIDE?
yeah…those are pretty terrible numbers for a AAA company like Sega with their flagship franchise. We can all hope that this will be a wakeup call to..I dunno, make a real sonic game rather than derping around with gimmicks and outsourcing their game to a company that probably didn't know how to make a legit sonic game.
-
They will do nothing besides mobile games now, while their other studios continue to make total war and maybe alien sequels etc.
-
Atlas should start looking into getting off this sinking ship…
-
garbage in, garbage out
-
To be fair, it did give us the Sonic Boom cartoon (which…has little to nothing to do with the game) which is surprisingly kinda fun to watch.
-
Really? I mean, really?^^ Was anything sonic story related actually good? I never got the appeal of any of the characters. Maybe because I never grew up on the games, but the whole sonic thing is pretty lame to me from the character and world prospective.
-
The nineties UK fleetway comic (Sonic the Comic) was good
The first cartoon (adventures, the slapstick one) was good
The second cartoon (satam, the serious one) was ok
The very minimalistic visual story told in 3&K was okThat's about it I think. None of the 3D games have anything worthwhile storywise.
Sega should take a page out of nintendos book(or their own early nineties one) and par back the story to the minimal necessary -

The only character anyone really needs to give a damn about in this franchise is Eggman. He's the only one that improved as the serie progressed into the 3D games.
OH and Sonic 06 is the epitome of the Sonic franchise getting super ridiculous in terms of trying to shove a story in their universe.

also i like sonic adventure's stories…

Most Sonic Fans are like saying From the first Sonic game to Adventure 2 are the best.
but after Adventure 2, the only good sonic games imo are:
Sonic 4 (PS3 Version)
Sonic Generations
Sonic Colors (The story was cheesy since the target audience was kids)My Ranking of the Sonic TV Shows are:
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog - funny and good to watch
Sonic SatAM - good but wish it didn't get cliffhanger canceled)
Sonic Underground - boring(watch it if you want to)
Sonic X - it was ok at first but i wish 4kids didn't censor and edit it so much and it didn't somewhat focus on chris being around them, the only human characters i could stand were the butler and Rouge's Agent friend
Sonic Boom - Hate the character design changes, plus the episodes seem to cheesy to where only the target audience(kids under 7) would enjoy -
Sonic Heroes was actually a pretty decent game that was overlooked and hated at the time for not being Sonic Adventure 3.
And while yes, it was a bit broken in spots where it had no railings to keep you from plummetting off vines to your death, it did pretty well in having stages that rewarded you getting good at them.
With Shadow, Sonic 06, Boom, and the Wii games in general having come along since to show what an actually bad game is, it's moved up to mid-tier somewhere along the way. Still not Genesis era great, but good.
Sonic Rush and Sonic Rivals games are also fun but they're pretty dependent on memorization and not-blind play due to pushing you t omove at top speed at all times with no prep for various traps and pits ahead of you.
-
Sonic heroes is alright. Some people like it and some don't. I use to love it but going back now it really doesn't hold up for me.
Colours, secret rings and the rush series were all pretty good games. I have both rivals and they're just meh. Like shadow the hedgehog and black knight meh.
-
Sonic Heroes was alright for me as well. I dunno what it is but it didn't click completely for me. And screw whoever designed Team Sonic's jungle levels, because I NEVER got past the alligator chase sequence in the level before the boss fight…..wonky camera or something, I dunno.
Shadow the Hedgehog....hahaha....well...no comment.
But to be honest, I have never played a 3D Sonic game past that point. No Colors, no Unleashed, no snickers Black Knight, no Generations, no Lost World....Sonic kinda flew under my radar once I got a DS and Wii.
-
I haven't played it in a while, but I remember really liking Sonic Heroes. Maybe not as much as much as SA2, but I thought it was a solid entry in the series.
Oh, if we only knew how much worse the Sonic games could get.
And I dunno. I've always really liked the Sonic Adventure angle of being able to play as multiple characters with different gameplay styles.
-
The team mechanic in Sonic Heroes put me off immediately. And then a good Sonic game was never made again (MAYBE excluding one or two handheld titles).
-
The best Sonic/Megaman/Gunstar Heroes/Ristar game in years.
(That character plays like Sonic, but the others play fairly differently. Love her dash move though.)
-
Speaking of Sonic and Megaman, The cover to the first issue of the most recent Sonic/Megaman comic Crossover "Worlds Unite" has been revealed:
!
This crossover will also include Megaman X and Sonic Boom and Archie's own Sonic characters -
Atlas should start looking into getting off this sinking ship…
the
Which I think is impossible for them to do since Sega owns their parent company and by extension them, meaning they're like the music band from Jame's Cameron's Titanic:ninja:.
OH and Sonic 06 is the epitome of the Sonic franchise getting super ridiculous in terms of trying to shove a story in their universe.
It's more the epitome of what happens when you don't spend enough time trying to make your game work right…....which unfortunately many Publishers still do in spite of plenty instances showing why this is bad.
-

That is a horribly depressing analogy.
On other topics: Sonic Heroes let me down due to not being able to fight Metal Sonic's cool new look.
Freedom Planet is fun but I feel I should point out if you found Sonic's stories recently to be bad you should try the no-story mode.

Oh I didn't even bother going into gameplay because honestly…that speaks for itself. THOUGH at this point, I don't know which would be worse (Sonic Boom or 06) regarding the terribly broken gameplay.

Hell of a Deathmatch if ever I saw one.
-
They invited Top-Man?
No lie, that was my first thought too. He gets billing between effin MegamanX and Princess Sally (it didn't occur to me til later that that signified the ArchieSonic characters are allowed in this crossover)
TOPMAN!?
-
Maybe its just the CG model they happened to have? taking a quick glance at the artist's deviantart, while they have most of the Freedom Fighters they don't have a whole lot of Mega Man.
I have no idea why top Man would make it into their files first, but…
-
I remember playing Sonic Free Riders once
I remember being overall embarrasd, and hurting my back
-
For those that care, here are part 2 and 3 covers for the crossover:
!
Art credits include Dan Shoening, who's work on IDW's Ghostbusters is phenomenal! I cannot wait (and hope they bring Ben Bates back on for some part of the crossover)
-

Really, they actually remember Alex Kid and Billy Hatcher. -
If you're not going to do Capcom Vs. Sega don't let Archie mock us with the idea, Capcom.
-
Current Archie is so fuckin good omg. I'm really excited about that
-
Oh man! This crossover just got much more interesting! If they include Vanessa D Schneider I think I'll pop a fanboy fuse!
-
More reveals! Okami, Golden Axe, Ghouls N Ghosts and NIGHTS!
!
-
Goddamn there's a CERTAIN MONSTER FROM MONSTER HUNTER very obviously outlined in silhouette on top and I'm scremaing
-
I wish there was a Breath of Fire comic.
And that I was coloring it.
-
Day 4's reveal for the comic:
!
Ryu, Vyse, Base Wing , Gore Magala -
Damn, no PN03. Eh, still a pretty awesome scope of a Crossover they've got here. Yay for Vyse!
-
I was just skimming through this thread on random and HOLYSHITVYSE. I don't care if this is some comic that I'm probably never gonna read and that it will have no significance in promoting any new content or rerelease for the game and its world, any recognition for Skies of Arcadia makes me happy.
-
It's Billy Goddamn Hatcher time.
-
@Cyan:
It's Billy Goddamn Hatcher time.
Would you say Billy Hatchef is the most important final boss in my Sonic Journey, after Knuckles Chaotix.

It is your journey
only you may chose the path you walk
in other words, yes

Here's some information from a podcast that interviewed one of the producers of Sonic Boom.
! > * Suggestion that Sonic had to re-invent itself because the fanbase was getting smaller. Cites Call of Duty as an example/comparison.
- Boom was made to appeal to non Sonic fans. — This is stated multiple times.
- Suggestion that people/retailers are bored of Classic – Dreamcast era Sonic. States you can only do so much with these eras/characters. He does go on to suggest this is from a retailer standpoint.
- Claims multiple times that Boom (franchise) is a big success.
- Admits Boom (franchise) could have been better.
- “Could the games have been better… yes, any game can be made better.”
- Suggestion that part of the reason why Boom (game) isn’t that good is because the team didn’t know what Sonic was about/lack of experience.
- “In focus tests, we heard all the time, people were sick of speed, Sonic was too fast, they wanted to slow down.”
- “People really liked the Co-Op” — Hopes Sonic Team will do that in the future.
- “The biggest mistake in Boom (game) was adding too many features to it.
- “It was too much to ask of the/any development team” — In terms of different characters, combat, features etc.
- “I was tasked (by Sega) with creating an experience that appeals to an audience which doesn’t play Sonic.”
- “If I could do it again, I would remove features and speed would be the main focus from the start.”
- “Speed was shelved because we were under the impression people didn’t want it.”
- “Speed is always a Sonic thing, we didn’t focus on that.”
- “The goal of Boom was to reach new people.”
- “As a branch of Sonic, Boom is a success in many ways.”
- Suggests that due to how much content you need to make for a Sonic alone game, it’s too much work. You need additional characters to spread the burden of content.
- “Multiple characters resonate well with people”
- “Solo Sonic games, I don’t know how long that can last there isn’t enough variety to sustain it.”
- “The future of Sonic games needs to be Co-Op, it worked really well in Sonic Boom, community and online play, that sustains it.”
- Say’s he’d love to see a Sonic level design game.
- “In general, you need to do multiplayer and add online multiplayer aspects, that will sustain and keep the franchise alive.”
- Says that the reason for the change in release date was likely a number of reasons, cartoon air date, Nintendo release dates, Sega release dates.
- When the decision was made to change Boom’s release date, Sega did not know when Smash was coming out
