Looks like the trend of 1 chapter = 1 executive down is going to continue even with the Top Executives…Pica will be next week's victim, I reckon. And Trebol next (probably by the hands of Law).
Chapter 776: The Colosseum Hero
-
-
I would have been ok with Rebecca if Oda had allowed her to do something meaningful and heroic like save the citizens of Dressrosa from falling debris or bullets with her speed, becoming the true 'Hero of Dressrosa' or perhaps draw Diamante's attention with her dizzying ability to evade his blows allowing Kyros to attack him while his guard is down.
There are many ways of making her awesome without having her beat down her mother's killer if Oda had wanted it done. But no, Oda lets his prejudices (informed as they are by culture) influence his portrayal and, maybe, even his own feelings as a father to a young daughter could have had a hand in how he views father-daughter relationships. So yeah, at the moment Rebecca's character is still a lowpoint for me and never rose much from her introduction.
-
Mangapanda was extra shitty this chapter?
The nice thing about being unintentionally late for One Piece chapters is that you can read the MS chapters, which, while silly, is much better than "paying" money to Scumpanda
-
I read better chapters…
All I want to see is the end of the arc.
We need to move on.So the defeat of an enemy doesn't contribute to "moving on"?
I would agree with you if Rebecca WANTED to fight
if this was a story of a little girl wanting to be a fighter and her father being adamant in denying her access to "men's jobs",I would totally agree.
But it's not the case here..Rebecca never wanted to fight to begin with. The will of her mother has not been "imposed" on her,she totally agrees with her (shenever it's because she has been taught that since she was a child,or not,we don't know),she doesn't want to fight, she was forced to..and managed to fight without tossing aside her ideals, managing to survive without hurting anyone in the process.
is it really this terrible for her father step up and say "you don't need to fight anymore, daddy's here now"?also, with the whole "pacifism while beating people thing"
kyros was never a pacifist, hell he probably doesn't even consider himself a "good person"..he his shouldering the "violence" to spare his daughter from it.He is not gloryfying pacifism,he has never been one..he just want his daughter to keep not doing what she doesn't want to do in the first place, fighting.THANK YOU. You put into words why I have no problem with Rebecca at all, and why I loved this chapter.
I'm bracing myself for the smug, bandanna'd one liner as we speak.
"Y'know what's even higher than your voice? My level."

That actually pretty much sums up my opinion on the matter. I don
t need Rebecca to bloodily defeat Diamante for her to be a good character, and let
s face it, the suggestion some people made that she could defeat Diamante by dodging his attacks and then making him stumble over the edge of a cliff was really lame. Im ok with her being simply to weak to stand a chance against Diamante, that does not make her a bad character. There have been plenty of times in the story when a character didn
t stand a chance against an enemy and needed help. Zoro and Sanji vs. Arlong, Usopp vs. Jabura, Franky vs. Lucci, everybody vs. Enel etc. , that does not make the characters involved worthless or bad characters.
And honestly, I think the message from the chapter and Kyrosreasoning do have their merit. I don
t see a man, who has been tormented and haunted by his own brutality in the past his whole life, trying to keep his daughter, who has internalised her dead mothers ideals and avoided shedding blood for years, in the most brutal of circumstances, from becoming a murderer, as hypocritical or immoral. Would you have preferred for Rebecca to violently chop Diamantes head of or something? Yes, that would have been badass and awesome etc, but how would that have been a good character arc? "You lived your life as peacefully as you could under the circumstances, so now….you have to show how badass you are by killing this jerk over there." Would that have been a good moral? So I am fine with this part, the problem though is that her just standing by and being protected after swearing to protect the Toy Soldier (aka her father) for once...is a bad character arc, too. She doesn`t need to shed blood and betray her morals to become a good character, but she has to make good on her vow or her character really is both badly developed and useless in the story. -
"And here I thought you were a lot… puts on his shades ...harder."
But seriously, I hope the climax of the Zoro vs Pica fight will be decent at least. :)

Thanks for reading my rambling that I started in the morning. I didn't even think anyone will read it.XD
But seriously, from when we found out about Kyros' backstory it was always apparent that he would fight Diamante so that Rebecca would not have to sully her hands with blood. That's why as the Toy Soldier he made Rebecca a 100% defensive fighter who with a combination of some knowledge of Kenbunshoku Haki and her opponent's momentum to either knock the other gladiators out or out of the ring.
This is a man who refused to touch her as a kid without wearing gloves because he did not want the sins of his past to somehow pass to her/have her life defined by what he did (Which is a huge recurring topic in One Piece: The children of "Terrible Men" such as Ace an Luffy being judged because of their infamous parent's actions). Kyros, despite being ultimately beloved by the people of Dressrosa, viewed himself as a monster for killing the two people who killed his best friend and as such, would never wish that his child would never have to do what he has done, which leads to him (possibly) taking out the one of the main man that has caused so much trauma for him and his entire family.
I'm fully on board of Kyros vs Diamante. The former hero of the coliseum vs the current one. Of course, it wouldn't have hurt if Rebecca did something. I would have been happy if she use her skills to dodge all of Diamante's attack so Kyros can focus on the fight.
Actually, I think that Kyros wanted to teach her a full set of fighting skills. But because of her belief, he decided it was best to teach her defensive tactic.
I believe that he didn't want to touch her because he felt he was dirty. The blood still stained his hand so he doesn't want to contaminate her pureness.
Yeah, I do respect his decision. Because of a mistake he did out of rage, he had to live with the consequences for so many years. If Rebecca had somehow injured Diamante, she would have been wreck with guilt knowing her personality. Kyros wouldn't want that to happen. Sure, he end up staining his hand with the blood of his wife's murderer. He made the sacrifice so Rebecca can still maintain her innocence. He took a bullet for her and she also took one for her character development. LolI also truly believe your belief that Rebecca was forced to grow up to fast and that mentally she thinks she is a adult but she clearly isn't there in some aspects. Now, people will point out that Luffy and Ace were thrown in that situation as well but every situation is different. Rebecca basically had Kyros only while Ace and Luffy had Sabo, the mountain bandits, Garp, and everyone in Foosha village to help form them into the men they became.
Her being a gladiator prisoner did forced her to mature and rely on herself more. But she's a still scared child and would run for help if she's able to. When she knew her dad would be at the sunflower field waiting for her, she immediately revert back to her child mentality.
It basically comes down to different people having different upbringing and also having different personality traits. Not everybody eager to be a pirate who gets beaten up a lot at age 7!To me, people can complain about how Rebecca hasn't hurt/killed anyone and how that's sexist, but it has been shown that Rebecca has always been at a disadvantage (extremely dull sword and shield and basically no armor) in a coliseum that added killing to it when Doflamingo and Diamante took control because of mainly her ties to her grandfather, who was seen as a monster. But Rebecca thrived because of her defensive abilities taught by her father until she started facing stiffer competition, including the man who killed her mother and was def. a league above her both physically and mentally. I, like many hope that Rebecca is redeemed before this is all over but this fight was always about Kyros vs Diamante.
I remember when she was appeared. People were like "OMG she's a gladiator who has the title the undefeated woman! She must be a badass fighter. She also had a chainmail like Red Sonja. She's definitely a badass. She's the next nakama because she's the beautiful swordswoman who was carrying the meat!" So much for that.Weep. I see a lot of fanarts of her where she's muscle-toned, has scars and a no-nonsense badass fighter. I have nothing against people doing that. I guess is their way to express their frustration and disappointment with her character. But I do feel they are missing the point of her character which may have contribute to overly high expectation of her. She also appeared after the thing with Tashigi and Monet.
As I said, there are many way to protect a person without resorting to violence. He can still redeem her by letting her grow up out her constantly relying on her father. But with all the open plot point to resolve, I don't think Oda will even remember her initial goal. So,he will more likely slap a happy ending to Rebecca & Kyros' story. I'm going to bet that Kyros can still somehow save Rebecca from any danger despite his heavy wounds!:ninja:Speaking of Diamante, the fact that he is a matador is so perfect for his character, depending on your views of bullfighting. For the people that somehow like it, Diamante is the hero facing the most dangerous. However, for the vast majority, he is a man who takes on people who are clearly hurt and at a disadvantage and uses anything to lower his opponent's guard so he can deal mortal damage, such as his DF powers to essentially disarm his opponent or telling REbecca that he killed her mother and taking her out of the fight. But the number one thing about matadors is that eventually you will come across a bull you think is wounded and you end up being gored, which is what exactly happened with Kyros, who used his rage at Diamante and wanting to protect his daughter against the monster who ruined all their lives to finally take him out (if Diamante has truly been defeated).
I view him as a 10 years kid who poke a hornet nest and got what he deserved.lol
-
Thanks god Rebecca didn't pull a power up straight from her ass, like what most people wanted. Imagine a girl way bellow Diamantes level, suddenly blocking and evading his attacks? Lol. Her portrayal was perfect. If you guys want some super powered girls, go watch power puff girls.
-
When you have something as awesome as Doffy vs Luffy looming ahead you can't help but be glad the other fights are ending quickly. Once Doffy learns of all that has transpired below him, especially the destruction of the factory, I'll presume, I really hope he goes crazy on Luffy.

Actually, I think most of us don't exactly want Rebecca suddenly pull a power up and defeat Diamante because that's just stupid. I don't expect her to actually fight him AT ALL. Rebecca's fighting style rely on dodging people attack.Rebecca was so fast that she managed to avoid a deadly blow from Hakuba which nobody else in block D could see. Even Bartolomeo couldn't really see it. The thing is she was actually trying to block Diamante attack but before she could,Kyros and Robin block those for her. She has the speed, why couldn't she theoretically evade an attack?

She didn't need a power. She was already given a power. She has speed and haki level ability to dodge. If they wanted to they could have easily had her give Diamante a death by a thousand cuts or do the all dodge and let Diamante's own attacks hit him. Although I kinda gave up on her character a long time ago so I don't really care that much. I would have much rather seen Rebecca being used to bond with Nico Robin over the whole girls being hated by the whole world and then let Nico Robin take the fight in her name while Kyros goes off and teams up with Luffy and Law to take down Dofla.
Anyway can't forget to mention that you sound like an utter douchebag and I hope you get an urinary tract infection. Bye

Hakuba was a different situation. The ground at the flower field was shaking, basically it's fucking up the footing. And Kyros clearly stated that Rebecca can't block those kind of attacks. Who else knows better than the guy that trained her?

1 chapter = Diamante fight

@Medical:
What about Trebol?
He's the secret big boss and 1st commander of Kaido:ninja:

@Medical:
What about Trebol?
Obviously Kyros is going to take his sword coat it Haki, stab it through Diamante and throw his sword coated in Haki along with Diamante to the top of the Palace where Trebol will be impaled and defeated.
Doflamingo will slip and fall on Kyros's Haki coated blade and end up beheading himself which will cause Bird Cage to fall and slice Pica's real body into twenty pieces.
Everyone rejoices and Kyros is revealed to be a Saiyan.
Story continues and Doflami-"who was it again" is forgotten.

This. Kyros was able to deflect those spiky ball things. Rebecca's a smaller target and she arguably one of (if not THE) most agile people in Dressrosa. It would've been awesome if she she weaved her way through the barrage.
And since she hasn't spilled another person's blood before, it would've been even BETTER if when Diamante was going to use his half moon thing she rushed in and stabbed him before he could do it. 8Y

Leaving aside issues of sexism the major problem with Rebecca is writing, made all the more worse because Oda is a good writer.
The major point with telling a story is 'Show don't tell'. Well we have been told time after time how amazing Rebecca is How she won time after time in the arena using nothing but her super-speed dodging skill.
But we've been reading Dressrosa for nigh on TWO YEARS now and we have been shown bugger all evidence of this! Even this issue where there was a challenge that seemed tailor made for her ability (falling iron spikes) she just stood there and had a 'motion.I'm going to heave a mighty guess and say next chapter Diamante rallies and Rebecca makes a clever dodge so that he skewers himself thus giving her revenge and preserving her pacifism. But even if I'm right this is so last minute it's going to be one of the most 'meh, so?'' moments in this series ever.
She was the only one who noticed and was able to dodge/parry Hakuba's attack. Not even Dellinger was able to see it coming.
Diamante is down for good. He's not going to rally. Oda is a great writer and he does a lot of showing not telling. That kind of story telling however leaves aspects of the story up for interpretation. The audience has to be relied on to make the proper connections. That won't happen if the audience ignores the story so they can focus on whatever they want to whine about.

Well dellinger don't got that haki… what fish ever has spirit anyway?
And was too busy wondering why gladius was overreacting to silly weak opponents. While hakuba went merciful as rebecca duped him by pretending to be down, she kinda handled diamente's head crusher fine thou....

Kyros the 9th. Wonder what the dude did after leaving the riku army? Jimbei 10th, cesear 11th, bartolomeo/ momonosuke 12th?

Hey guys! Apparently Kyros ate Vergo's Metal Metal fruit after he died in punk hazard! Subtle hint from Oda, when did Kyros do it? :ninja:

I am still hoping for a Doffy vs Luffy 1 vs 1, not sure who will take out Trebol, could be Luffy, Law or perhaps even Burgess as we don't know where he is.
It will depend on how quickly the fight is resolved between Luffy and Bellamy as well.

I wonder what would happen if burgess gets wrecked on dressorosa by fujitora, or the strawhat and friends group take him out and leave him to fujitora, then along with many of the pirates not allied to the strawhats, fujitora will pull a kizaru. that is capture around 500 of them, after all the big fish escaped. Except the flaminigo crew. Would be interesting to see the headlines, by absa, strawhats crew takes out prominent underworld broker, and sends challenge to three yonko. Grosei going ah shit, another D(LAW), and he's in an alliance with Garps grandson. Blackbeard zehahaha, lets go raid a prison or two, you guys and kill mugiwara. Ok i will do just that i don,t know if others have this issue, i usually read the netire thread but some times when you stop reading and come back you can't remember where you stop and you scrolling the pages some times even going back to read what you have read before until you realise you read it already.

After reading the chapter i can say it was'nt a bad chapter but it was'nt the best chapter based on what I know One Piece standard is when it come to fights, I think it was a chapter filled with wasted potential. The chapter is filled with Diamante laughing like a hyena and Kyros and robin screeming "no Rebecca!". As to why I say wasted potential i think the fight and characters were static if that is the right word, Diamante staying in one place attacking, apart from two name attacks that accomplishes nothing that was it, that is not what i know sword fight to be in One Piece the only thing that come close is Zoro Vs Olm but at least we know he was learning flying slash at that time and it was way more entertaining. I have seen in other mangas, movies and anime characters using the long sword or belt sword whatever it s called an it was done way better, for a sword fight there is only two times in the entire chapter there swords meet and one was the finishing. Don't get me wrong i think sword fight is more than sword clashes but think of this senario as the confetti is hitting kyros and he is blocking Diamante could have created some distance and attack with is sword technique instead what happen he shot Kyros in the leg pull out and Unbrella and start to glote. Another wasted apportunity is the fact that i was looking forward to seeing Diamante get rid of the iron he is carring which would increase his speed, then we could see a speed battle, thunder soldier vs the hero of the coloseum, it's like Oda never think of that posibility, or he just want the fights to be over so he can move on to more interesing stuff. In short what i am saying is the chorography was lacking, Diamante as a treat was lacking even Delinger performed better and he is suppose to be under the head of the fighting group. Honestly that was'nt sword fight, it is more like a quarrel.
Also for those who want to see Rebecca do something forget it, I was one of those but when I saw her let go of her sword that hope came crashing down. Next chapter if Diamante is not down we will see Kyros trying to finish him off and Robin and Rebecca stopping him or he may try a dirty attack and get clutch and the chapter changes seen, all hope is lost for Diamante.

I would say the reason why this arc focuses around Rebecca is primarily because of Kyros. Kyros has had a way bigger role (especially with the flashback showing what happened) in everything than Rebecca yet everyone wants Rebecca to beat people when she clearly doesn't have the strength to do it.
I agree with this

Dressrosa is a "full action arc".
I'd rather have the next arcs be relatively short and well paced, like Arlong's arc. -

Arlong's Arc didn't overstay it's welcome and had a good balance between story and fighting. I'd like to see more arcs similar to it.
