Wow, how disappointing is Diamante? LOL He's like the Usopp of the DoFla family…no skills at all, just tricks here and there!
Chapter 776: The Colosseum Hero

This chapter actually wasn't as bad as I thought, extremely predictable yes, but I really liked the execution. On to Pica vs Zoro next week!
-
Usopp can't do an Half Moon.
He not missing out on much, just another genetic sword attack that did bugger all.

WTF?
(This is coming from a die hard Usopp fan.)

Yes, but that's not the point. The point is that Robin's line makes no sense in the context of the scene. I creates supposed urgency because the attack can destroy the sunflowers, but it doesn't.
If there actually was enough spiked balls to destroy sunflowers in the first place, Kyros's actions would have no impact on it, since the balls were already in the air, and none were added to it.
Just saw stream's translation and in there she was simply noting that the attack was lasting a long time and if it didn't end soon the sunflowers would be totally destroyed.
I don't think it was to create some sense of urgency, but more to make Diamante look better ("Ok, he didn't got them, but if he hadn't to fight Kyros and launched a second attack, he would"). Just like Diamante saying Kyros had fought many people before this fight and is exhausted could be simply a way to make Kyros not look bad if he ends up losing anyways ("Ok, he lost, but if he was 100% he could have won"). -

I second this. A rest up kyros with his 2 legs would pretty much tear up diamante without too much sweat.

Then again, stream is equally bad, so... meh? In the stream's case I can't tell what is the actual purpoes of the line, so either way, pointless.

Cabbage was sleeping around Half Moons and iron spikes rain, lol, No more Cabbage for the series.

Although my boy Diamante was defeated in one chapter, I enjoyed it. (Diamante's facial expressions were hilarious).

UGH. I've been trying to think about why I think your posts are horrible, but I realized that you take everything with the logic of a robot and not the context of the series or what it's trying to say and aiming for. Who gives a fuck about technicalities of fucking physics in a series about a rubber man and a talking skeleton, with poop jokes everywhere.
I think you meant to quote my Sunflowers posts.
I treat the lack of common in One Piece as rather amusing distraction from actual major flaws. Like, for example, writing in this arc.
Tom and Jerry must destroy you.
Tom and Jerry is a slapstick cartoon. One Piece, I think, has a slightly higher standarts to adhere to.
Also, Animaniacs is a better cartoon. :ninja:

wonder how WWII would have gone if someone realized the massive power of sunflowers.

Darth's a bit quirky with still not accepting or liking a lot of the reoccuring themes of OP.
But his posts are far from horrible. He's one of the most dedicated and interesting people here.
And this is coming from someone who finds him absolutely ridiculous at times.
I think they're horrible because they miss the point. I know some people obviously really appriciate them, but I know why I don't now in general. Just criticism.
Another thing about ch. 776. Remember the confrontation with Magellan? It had kind of a similar thing.
And I do think OP's wackiness is just about as wacky as any of those old cartoons. This conditions me to adapt a certain mindset in what to expect, along with what OP is going for.

Did people had the same thinking about this chapter when Wiper defeated Shura?
-
I don't get why people think Diamante is still going to fight. After an epic speech like Kyros gave and an attack like that 9 times out of 10 the villain is done. I honestly think we're seeing Zoro + Elizabello vs Pica next week.
-
Its kinds weird that you guys are talking about Darth like they can't see your posts, or like they're some kinda metaphysical concept.

This chapter…I...uh...
Dammit. Why the hell did Oda have to do exactly what I was hoping he wouldn't?
I can deal with Diamante being defeated this chapter. In fact, as a fight, Kyros vs. Diamante wasn't half-bad. Diamante got to show off some cool and creative moves, and Kyros came across like the badass I thought he was at the end.
But Rebecca…oh Rebecca. I really wanted to give Oda the benefit of a doubt. I really hoped that after all the bashing of Rebecca's character the past year or so, she would finally pull through and do something useful in this fight. It didn't even need to be a lot; simply deflecting a few attacks and showing that she can protect herself would have been fine, and would have shown at least some progression in her character. I was hoping that she would show Kyros that she has grown, and that she would live up to what she said earlier this arc: that this time, it would be her protecting him (silly me, I thought that was the entire point of her character and how she would develop). Imagine how cool it would've been if Diamante was about to finish off Kyros, but then Rebecca stands in and deflects the blow! Giving Kyros the opening he needs to win! It would have been a fitting moment that would show development of both characters, and would have shown that Rebecca isn't just some princess needed to be saved - that even though she's not a fighter, she's capable of defending herself (like she has before, in the coliseum) and has a good resolve.
But nope: everyone else was right. Rebecca is just the damsel in distress for Kyros and Robin to protect. Which actually, now that I think about it - Robin just made everything worse. Rebecca needed to be protected by two people, one of which wasn't even involved in the fight! That's not a knock against Robin; I think she's been active enough this arc that I can live with her not doing too much else, but come on; did she really have to make Rebecca seem even more useless?
Ugh. At least the fight itself was alright. And I really doubt that the fight will continue after this - everything about this chapter screamed that this was the finale of the fight. If it keeps going and Rebecca actually does something, then cool - but I really, really doubt it at this point.
Man, I think this may be the first time that One Piece has legitimately made me angry with how something was handled. I just can't believe how much of a wasted opportunity this was, or how horribly Rebecca's character has been handled.
Oh well. I guess Zoro vs Pica next week? I really hope that Pica manages to do something at least kind of effective against Zoro. Smug one-liner Zoro is getting really tiring - I miss the legitimately badass, standing up after tanking attacks covered in blood and finishing the job Zoro.
-
Good Mike this chapter was awful, I mean yes Robin not taking out any one grates my nerves but.
I have more problems with how the fight was handled, this guy is supposed to be in the higher ups of Dof crew and he gets taken out that way and with ease? Seriously?
I haven't been enjoying One Piece for a while now but man was this an awful fight.
You guy's complain about Hiro of Fairy Tail writing this way, I felt like I was reading a chapter out of that series man.
I don't know what to say about this arc, Dof was a villain I was really looking forward to but.
Too many side characters, too many flashbacks, too many breaks and slow pacing.
I wouldn't mind all these breaks, I understand it but with the slow pacing and all these flashbacks.I don't understand why Oda was wasting time with all these side characters any ways, they'll just disappear again till the next War >>
He should have been focusing on Strawhats fighting this guy and his minions. Feels like it's been forever since we've seen Sanji / Chopper / Nami / Brook fight. Heck, what happened to Sanji? I feel like he's died off screen.
-
How brilliant for forum people to think, that kyros should not have won, while expecting or rather hoping rebecca would. Sexist, really, there are times when it feels like people think everything is sexist. But kudos to your opinions. People see all the wrong things. Btw in what way is the writer being sexist by treating and displaying his characters as he see's fit? How often do you see women in the real world being gorgeous and are top of the ass kickers league? Some people see it as being sexist, others see it as those advocating for equality are more interested in seeing one gender being more highly favoured. is that sexism, perhaps.
If i said queers, homosexuals, transvetites and lesbians and bisexual people are really messed up in their thinking and see good for bad and bad for good, would that make me a bad person, a misinformed person or someone saying it as it is?

I was also rooting for rebecca to show of her abilities in front of her father but she had always been a tool in Odas mind to reinforce the horror of dressrosa in a way in which, through her life, we could see the start and the end of doflamingos age as a king.
Maybe the problem was to show her as a "badass" gladiator when we first met her. It made people hope that she could even join the SH, including me.
She will most probably never fight ever again. Her character progression is done for in my opinion.
-
If we look back to his first introduction, Diamante looked like someone who tried to live up to the "Powerful/Great/Awesome/Genius" image people imposed on him, with arrogance to match. He's been overestimating himself too much because of that.
I don't mind seeing him end like this because the "Colosseum Hero" hype he got was stark contrast with what Kyros had received. Kyros' era is all about fair fight, strength, determination and pure fighting skills. In other hand, Diamante's era is all about violence and bloodshed where anything goes, even his cowardly tricks, because those are what audience find entertaining, thanks to Mingo's doctrine.

Why do people want more of a fight between Kyros and Diamante? Frankly, this arc has been going on for two years and the sooner we get the Pica/Zoro fight over the better. I just want this whole arc over and done with in the next two months so that we can move on to the fallout that happens after Doflamingo goes down. Dragging out Diamante across two chapters envitably means they'll drag out Pica/Zoro for two chapters (and the Doflamingo battle with Luffy will probably last at least a month). Factoring in at least a couple more breaks before the end of this arc and I just don't understand why people want more of these battles.
-
I didn't really like this chapter of OP (and coming from me that is saying something); it felt similar to a Fairy Tail chapter where Erza fights. In this case though, Erza is replaced by Kyros and takes rediculous amounts of damage (though the amount is understandable given how strong he was alluded to) only to one-shot the enemy (a Top Executive at that)..
That is not my only problem; Rebecca could have done SOMETHING other than cry and I would appreciate at least a little badassery by using her coliseum skills and an sword that's actually sharp. This go around, Kyros is partially to blame with his "Pure Hands untained by blood" Bullsh*t.
Oh well…............I'm sure Oda will give us something better next time. -
@Doffy.:
"Every character with tits and vagina must be a badass fighter or else FUCK ODA " trend is getting extremely annoying .
I feel the same way as you, and if she had been occupying the role that she is occupying right now from the start, i wouldnt have had a problem with it. The idea was great and new regarding rebecca and thats why the way she was handled was not satisfactory enough my standards for OP are just to high.
-
Probably Oda misses drawing Sanji, so is rushing this arc so he can draw his eyebrows again
-
I personally enjoyed the chapter and thankfully don't use mangapanda. I understand why Oda didn't have Rebecca fight, King Riku has pacifist ideals so it made sense for Kyros to keep her hands clean. In a way it shows how Dressrosa was and should be, without violence. I think Kyros needed to show more and Diamante getting taken out by one blow is surprising, but if Kyros hit a fatal point then I guess that's how some fights go. Oda may have crammed too much into this arc, but I'm waiting to see how he handles it because he has a habit of crushing my doubts with his finale.
-
We are talking physical fights here. That's the annoying thing. Oda never lets any beautiful woman have an actual physical fight. And this is not just some oh I didn't notice I was doing this. This is absolute delieberate sexism by Oda. He goes out of his way to make sure they never happened with the most humiliating example being Kalifa.
And before the usual idiots come here and repeat the same idiotic things about woman simply being naturally weaker shut your stupid mouths. This is the goddamn One Piece universe. Biological strength means nothing. There are no limits. There is absolutely nothing preventing a woman (yes even a beautiful one since as we have seen multiple times strength has nothing to do with body shape )from being just as strong as tough as a man except for OdaNow I think you're insulting Nami and Robin. Both have had very physical fights. Nami's fight against Ms Doublefinger was brutal, and Robin had a really good fight against Yama. And even this arc we saw her ready to square off against Trebol when Harjudin interrupted. And she totally own Hakuba.
For Robin, there's a very clear reason why she doesn't have any fights: She's too strong. Her power is quite OP. Remember how she manhandled Zoro and Sanji when she first appeared as Ms All Sunday? Oda screwed up giving her such a strong DF, because there's no reason she would struggle in a fight. Even the Yama fight, she only had issues at first while trying to lead him out of the ruins. Then she kicked his ass like it was nothing. Robin is incredibly powerful, to a fault.
Nami on the other hand is more problematic. She's not really all that strong, and she's kind of a coward. She can find bravery much the same way Usopp does, especially when others are relying on her, but she's not, by nature, a fighter. That said, she's incredibly smart and quick-witted, and that's how she's won her battles thus far. She could be fighting, but the characters whose main jobs are essentially to fight are going to be getting theirs first.
At the very least, we know they have fights waiting for them against Blackbeard's crew.
@Mr.:
In this case, I don't really agree. I figure if Kyros had a son, he would feel the same way about it nonetheless. One of his entire reasons for living that his offspring should never have the taint he carried with him as a youth–being branded a "killer" and being condemned to an life of bloodletting and redemption. That was his curse and he'll be damned if he passes it onto his heir. An almost religious theme there.
This. People saying that he would let a son fight are throwing out baseless speculation. Kyros has never once said: "You can't fight, you're a girl!" In fact, he tried to teach her to fight and she refused because of her mother's beliefs.
I think it's safe to assume now that Rebecca even failed the "Sexy Lamppost"-Test (Can the character replaced with a sexy lamppost and the story would still make sense?). I can't think of any reason why she was actually in this arc. Removing her completely wouldn't have changed any of the plot developments, so calling her "useless" is quite fitting.
Have you read this arc? For one, the reason Luffy's going after Doflamingo is because of her. (To be fair, it's because she bought him lunch.) Also, Kyros's character arc could not exist at all without her.
While she has not actually done all that much (outside of winning Block D) she has been important to the overall story.
-
@Doffy.:
"Every character with tits and vagina must be a badass fighter or else FUCK ODA " trend is getting extremely annoying .
I think it's more "Please, for the love of god, write a half competent female fighter for once, Oda."
It's bad when blocking attacks and providing info are considered major accomplishements on part of female characters, you know?
-

A) Nami's fight against Ms. Doublefinger happened more than a decade past. So did fight against Yama.
B) Blocking stuff is not really an achievement considering her fruit.
C) We are talking about current motives.

This. People saying that he would let a son fight are throwing out baseless speculation. Kyros has never once said: "You can't fight, you're a girl!" In fact, he tried to teach her to fight and she refused because of her mother's beliefs.
Which is why majority of people, including me, has been pointing out that the themes for her character would have been equally bad if she was a man.
In fact, I have mostly seen sexism brought by people trying to deflect legimate argument through simple dismissal.

I have read this arc, yes. Luffy cared more about getting the Mera Mera, right until Doflamingo shoot Law right in front of him.
Rebecca was never a major motivation for him, and certainly not irreplaceable.

A) You are bringing counter-arguments to arguments that actually haven't been that much brought up.
B) I could list you a quite a number of woman being highly competent, though I fail to see what physical appearance has to do with it.
C) I very much advocate equality in all forms of art.

She evidently did.
I am not arguing Kyros's behavior is unrealistic, only that from the point of view of character development, Rebecca should do more than just meekly abide by his assessment.

@.access:
I think people gets butthurt when others call Oda sexist because they think others are calling him a "bad guy". I am one of those who thinks Oda is sexist, but I am well aware he has no ill intentions. Japan has a long way to go when it comes to gender equality and, if my view is correct about that, Oda is actually quite liberal when it comes to this, but he is still a product of his country (similar to how he treats homossexual characters. He shows them full of stereotypes always depicting them as flaming flamboyant creatures, but you can see he is actually trying to portray them in a good light and always does all he can to make the okama extremely likeable goodhearted characters, he doesn't relate sexual orientation to a flaw of character). He is trying his best to portray his female characters as strong women, but we can see he doesn't deliver it properly (as much as he tries, he can't let it go of the idea the women must be protected by men).
To be fair, regarding the way he treats women, the only thing Oda does that actually makes me angry is the fact that he seems to think that "ugly" women are not deserving of the same treatment as the cute girls (he doesn't let a man punch a woman… unless she is ugly). All I can do is agree, agree, agree. Nobody is trying to say Oda is a bad person or that this is a bad manga, but yeah, in terms of women: good intentions and lately almost always bad execution.
Also, very disappointed in Diamante if that was the final blow…

Also, I despise people dismissing it as cultural sexism. It doesn't matter that that Rebecca is a woman. This is bad from character, storytelling, moral and philosophical points of view, her gender has fuck all to do with it.
If her gender has nothing to do with it why are people mad she's weak? There are tons of weak characters in OP, both male and female. I don't see the problem. Her dad was the legend, not her

No, but internal logic would be nice once in a while.
Otherwise, you just let things run however you like, and you end up with Bleach.
If here gender has nothing to do with it why are people mad she's weak? There are tons of weak characters in OP, both male and female. I don't see the problem. Her dad was the legend, not her
People are mad she's weak because her first character development she had was wanting to become strong enough to protect her own father, and because she lamented her being a burden to him.
Logical character development from there would be for her to learn that she is strong enough to stand on her own and survive. Something which, btw, does not break the pacifistic message, no matter how stupid it is.
-

It's less about her being weak and more about her being useless.
Usopp is pretty weak, but he still had his contributions. Same for Vivi.

Oda should have broken all rules and made Rebecca one-shot Diamante, even tough shes a 15 years old, and also even if it goes completely against Kyros flashback of their family despising violence more than anything, but oh well, what to expect of a privileged cisgendered scum.
