Yes, I caught up at 410, so the slower pace is a bit of a drawback, but I can accept it. However, I don't find the fights that much fun, and it's been that way at least back to Krieg if not Kuro for me. I recall being downright fed up with the Alabasta fights at about the time the Mr. 4 / Ms Merrychristmas fight started, although I could read through at full speed.
I like the developments BETWEEN fights way more than the actual fights, because (with the decided and fun exception of Sanji v Califa), they're almost all foregone conclusions. Oda can't surprise us with the product of the battle, only the process.
And I find the CP9 fights weaker than other fights because the dialogue is weaker.
! Jyabura's "I'm Robin's sister… psych!" line
! was a rare bright point, but it's been too much screaming of "Shigan" and "Soru" for my taste, and too little actual dialogue. Although it has given me the uncontrollable urge to scream "Shigan" every time I press a button.
! One reason Sanji vs. Kuroobi (chapter 86) is one of my favourite fights in OP is that Kuroobi's talking non-stop (and Sanji's voice-over-thinking non-stop).
! Fights with barely any dialouge are a gift from god in this day and age.
I can tell you don't read Naruto.
What's with the sudden lack of interest on CP9 arc?

Its just a bunch of cheeky kids who havn't gotten used to waiting every week for new chapters.
Ya wanna know when I started following weekly folks? When ol Zeph got caught up?
DIRECTLY AT THE START OF THE LONG ISLAND ARC. 0_0
ME + Sympathy for you = ZERO.Whoa! And I been around since Robin announced to Sanji and Chopper that she is leaving the crew! THAT's CHAPTER 340!! O_O''' AAAAHHHHHHHHH!!! I wished to be around longer then that and I'm not complaining about waiting for each chapter to come out every week..
-
This is just my personal opinion, but for me One Piece generally slows down when it reaches the main fights, and isn't as satisfying on a weekly basis. The same thing happened during the Alabasta arc. During the fights, there just isn't a lot happening with the story, which kind of lowers the tension. This isn't to say that the fights are uninteresting, just that they're more satisfying to read all at once at a quick pace. I think maybe it has something to do with the fights being somewhat more predictable than the plot.
-
I've been following since Luffy's fight with Foxy.
I DLed a chapter to see the new mini story, and then I got sucked in.
-
Fights with barely any dialouge are a gift from god in this day and age.
I can tell you don't read Naruto. The problem with fights without dialogue is that they don't really let you into the soul of the character. We don't get to see what's going on inside Kaku's head. I'd think the mindset of a man who's newly DFified would be very interesting as he explores his powers, for example, but Kaku doesn't get much dialogue OR even thought voiceovers.
It's a balancing act just like anything else, but without any insight through speech or thought dialogue, all we have is violence porn.
-
does Kaku even talk a lot….?
-
They didn't struggle enough in their CP9 fights, and Sogeking fought no one.
-
he could fight someone…maybe Blueno

You need to read Neji vs Kidomaru.

yesh i feel old, i found One Piece when the skypeia arc was just starting. so yea i've been reading it chapter to chapter forever but it isn't old to me at all, i just wanna see more stuff in it lol. if anything Oda limits himself!
-
The lack of pain so far is the one thing that has lowered my intrest I wanted to see some real suffering in their eyes or a moment of doubt like in chopper and kumadori's fight or maybe my expectations were too high..whatever
Edit: besides sogeking he got plenty of it this arc
-
does Kaku even talk a lot….?
He does talk a lot. I don't find him a silence character. What disgust me is people would say Kaku is silant because he does not speak often but what about other people? Luffy was often silance in serious discussion and no one calls him a silent guy? Uh comon you gotta be kidding me.
-
Well I have to agree with some posts that suggest CP9 is a pretty weakly developed group of villains, by OP standards that is. Granted we know more about some of them than we knew about higher Officer Agents but they're just lacking a special…something. I'm just not really a big fan of them, dunno why. I wanted to hate them but they all pretty much follow Lucci around like a bitch. Oda even gave them fantastic and unique quirks but it doesn't work for me.
Yeah I want Spandam and Lucci to get a new asshole torn into them, but no single villain (so far) has got me thirsty for their blood. Dunno why. shrugs
-
I love CP9 so far, but as much as I like Lucci, he does seem to lack a kind of charm.
-
I think the cp9 would be a lot more potent had they a better leader than Spandam, I mean honestly.
-
Yeah I want Spandam and Lucci to get a new asshole torn into them, but no single villain (so far) has got me thirsty for their blood. Dunno why. shrugs
Maybe it's because of the separation between the power_ful_ (Lucci) and the power hungry (Spandam)? I think that up until this arc they have always been one and the same (thinks Buggy, Kuro, Kreig, Arlong, Croc, Enel) and so the satisfaction at the end was the product of the hatred you had for the conceited acts they performed multiplied by the tension built up during the fight to overcome their strength.
In this case, it is clear that Lucci only cares for blood, and the tougher the opponent is, the more satisfaction he gets when he kills them. He's not really sadistic or anything, but will taunt an opponent if it means getting more satisfaction after the fight.
Spandam on the other hand, has commited many hateful acts, and I want to see him destroyed, but because of the physical weakness of his character his defeat doesn't seem like it will be a defining moment. -
CP9 are my favorite villains so far, personally. I like how the balance of power is a little different from previous villains, as unchipu said, we have power-hungry Spandam who is physically weak, and blood-thirsty Lucci. I don't always feel the need to totally hate every villain with a passion. But I can see Greg's point of view. CP9 don't make you want so badly to see them whooped. However, I DO really want to see Spandam completely humiliated and stripped of all power, not physically beaten. That's where it's different from the past. But the satisfaction will be the same.
-
The interest seems to raised with the lastest chapter. The could be the reason for the lack of interest, the chapter before this wasn't as good as usual.
-

I'm sorry for being an idiot…..you remind me of voozdik

Perhaps it's because these guys are supposedly the 'good guys' what with being Marines and all. Oda has to walk a fine line to make Luffy want to destroy them, yet not making them come off as total scumbags.
-
I love this arc.. love it so much!!! the best arc ever.. but the not really looking forward with the fighting!! ^^
-

Ah.. what an excellent excellent point.. tottally overlooked to the point where I had forgotten who the "good guys" and the "bad guys" were supposed to be…
Honestly though at this point in the story I can barely discern my argument that the marines shouldn't be considered bad guys because of all the good they do, and that Mugiwara no matter how we look at it are criminals.
Odas a very good storyteller, I'm sure once this arc is over I'll realize how alltogether the story tied in so well, looking at this particular moment is meaningless. -
the only reason some might be disinterested is because many are eagerly awaiting the aftermath of the fights and bustercall. i'm more anxious to know what's next then i have ever been. i'm glad these fights are going fast because i want to see the awesome conclusion to this arc and see what surprises are in store for us in the next arc.
-
I really love this arc, it's probably my favorite! But then again, the newest arc is always my favorite. xD
To tell you the truth…I don't really like most of the fights in One Piece, I read it for the story, among other things. It's not like I'm all 'Oh, fighting is WRONG' or something like that, but I don't know, the fights get boring sometimes, probably because I have a short attention span, and the fights are just like the same thing over and over again. And, by the time the next chapter of the same fight comes out, I'm like 'Wait, what...? When did Luffy get over there?' or something.
But I did really like the Sanji and Nami vs. Kalifa. That was really cool and funny to me. Kalifa was really cool, I wish she had stuck around longer.
All the characters in this arc are so cool, there aren't many I dislike.I'm actually really excited, because this is the first arc I've read where I'm actually up-to-date with the rest of the One Piece community. : DDD
-
I agree with many people (too many to list them all) but why I think the main reason I am starting to lack interest is not from anxiety or awaiting the next part of the arc, but that the fights don't have the meaning most of the fights in the old arc meant.
These fights remind me of Luffy vs Wiper or Zoro vs Buraham. While good fights with powerful people, the fights themselves are pretty meaningless. I know they hold 'keys' which is the only way to get the shackles off Robin, but that's what we are doing. We do not particularly want to beat up the CP9, we just want to save Robin. Luffy vs Crocodile had impact because defeating Crocodile ended his reign, ended the threat he posed, helped protect Vivi's country. Defeating Enel protected Skypia and announced the city of gold was in the sky. Defeating a CP9 member gets us what? A key which may or may not be useful in releasing Robin from her bonds, which is secondary in saving her from capture.
Not saying I don't enjoy the fights, but I just want to see them save Robin, and getting the keys doesn't seem to be enough to make me want to watch more people get beat up in the meantime.
-
I think it stems from how this is the first arc most of these psoters are following weekly.
I forgot about Spandam. Honestly, he's probably one of my top 3 favorite OP villains so far. Maybe #2. But I won't get into that right now.
-
If the fights are too short for some of you guys, maybe it will be longer in the anime. So keep your hops up. Cause it seems to me the fight between Lucci and Luffy isn't gonna be over for like 2-3 chapters. I just noticed, their names seem similiar. Starts with a Lu-. Has two consanants "ff" "cc", and ends with an "eeee" sound "y" and "i".
-
the only reason some might be disinterested is because many are eagerly awaiting the aftermath of the fights and bustercall. i'm more anxious to know what's next then i have ever been. i'm glad these fights are going fast because i want to see the awesome conclusion to this arc and see what surprises are in store for us in the next arc.
Yeah, that's pretty much exactly how I feel.
-
I agree about the….umph missing. When the quirks come out, like Blueno gossiping or Calipha accusing people of sexual harassment, they just seem random and like something about them wasn't completely worked out. Calipha and Fukuro were the worst off, I think. But they're still very badass, and whether anything seems predictable or not, I'm loving the fights. But again Calipha is the exception.
-
I've felt the latter fights have lacked a certain urgency, like Oda's now just going through the motions to build to the grand finale. For me, the Chopper/Kuma fight actually had a great sense of intensity and purpose, and it's been thus far the only fight I've really gotten into out of the Tower fights.
-
Problems of the fights were:
- Arc is pretty long (Odas in a rush because fans get eager)
- All enemies have similar fighting styles
- Oda used the fights for major power upgrades => not much space for battle tricks!
- Many fights at once. In the Alabasta arc, there were 6 fights in the finale, in the Skypia arc there were 4-5 ( the priest fights were more scattered over the whole arc). Now we have 7-8 fights.
-
For me, the Chopper/Kuma fight actually had a great sense of intensity and purpose, and it's been thus far the only fight I've really gotten into out of the Tower fights.
Probably because that was the only fight where the Strawhat was clearly outclassed by the CP9 member they were up against. The rest sorta lacked tension, with Chopper though, despite the logic that he should come out of this ok, he was taking such a beating that you just couldn't help but worry about him ( I adore the scene where Kuma stepped on his head and let out the lion roar, the camera angle was perfect and it just looked so vicious)
But I think the Luffy/Lucchi fight will turn some of that around - Luffy is going to have the fight of his life here, and the BC is coming, as well as Ussopp's inevitable triumph over whom or whatever.
I think the fights with the individual CP9 members, which alot of us looked as the climax for the SH's on this island, may turn out to be just a warmup for the chaos to come. All hell is about to break loose on this island, and the SH are going to need to be in decent shape to get through it.

@Cap'n:
I love CP9 so far, but as much as I like Lucci, he does seem to lack a kind of charm.
Thats because the so called "final villain" of this arc is nothing more than a government lacky. Lucci in terms of depth, has nothing on Croc or Enel. He's just another random bloodthirsty guy that wants to kill everyone.
I still love the arc though.
-
- Arc is pretty long (Odas in a rush because fans get eager)
Oxymoron.
Its too long but its rushed.
I see…..- All enemies have similar fighting styles
Is that a problem? They have the same moves, not the same styles.
I for one liked it.- Oda used the fights for major power upgrades => not much space for battle tricks!
Only Luffy and Chopper had major upgrades. Everyone else did the same thing they always do.

How is that a problem? Skypiea had like….10-11-12 fights anyway.
Why only count the priests? Its illogical. Fights are fights.

You guys want more meglomaniacs?
Havn't we had enough of them? -
You guys want more meglomaniacs?
Havn't we had enough of them?I was just reasoning why the new villain had less charm
-
-
Too long is subjective. And so far it's still not much longer than Skypiea. :/
I agree that the fights lack urgency, and I'm more interested in the aftermath then the fights themselves. I've never been really into fights in the first place unless they have a specific meaning to it other than "who's stronger". But this is Shounen after all. :P
-
Oxymoron.
Its too long but its rushed.
I see…..Yes, he tried to fit a lot of development into one arc. Now it's become
compareativly long and he needs to rush becaus fans want to see what

Yup. And I think it would suck even more if it turns out that none of these keys are correct. Then the battle at the justice tower feels like it is there because One Piece is a shounen manga and shounen manga must have fights.
And back to topic. I am still interested in this arc, particularly what happens beyond the fights. As far as the battles are concerned, I am always more interested in seeing Chopper, Nami and Usopp fighting because they seldom fight. To me it is a nice change from seeing the top 3 fighters. Moreover their battles are less predictable in the sense that you don't know if they are going to win it, particularly Chopper's battle in this arc since his official fight chpt comes late. I like the fact that their opponents normally outclass them so when they win in the end, it is more satisfying.
-
I feel that the reason none of them has sustained any heavy injuries is due to the fact that they finally know their stand and mission in this arc. before Enies lobby, they did get injured but ever since it became clear that Robin is in need of saving and Buster call on the way, injury and time is not something they can indulge in…evey second counts
Short fights are the best...2 chapter = sweet and memorable...too long = naruto....any of you want OP fights to be "Oh, I actually have this secret move which I have not used and once I use this…U r dead!! tactic? I don't want that…I rather crash, boom bang in 2 chapters with a believable upgrade and on with the next...
-
Zorro: Gorilla and Asura-Transformation => breaks Tekkai without further explanation why
What? That gorilla move didn't break tekkai, it just countered the bigan. And he cut Kaku as least once before with a leopard move. The Asura broke tekkai and was unavoidable and beat Kaku.
-
I dunno, I actually HAPPY that none of them have gotten any heavy injuries or dragged out scenes where they hear their 'inner spirit' give them an unseen power.
That happened a lot in Arabasta. We don't need it twice.
Regardless of what you think of them, good or bad, you must admit they are at least uniqe to OP and we can all agree that, that, is good.
Besides, with a Buster Call headed there way and UNLIMITED potential for where this arc could end up, (thinking about the options just boggles the mind), the real battles for life and death may not even have begun. They all have to get out alive after all. Unless of course…
-

Bravo to this I say.Sanji : Didn't break Bluenos Tekkai => Develops a harder element-based kick
within hours.Like Zoro breaking steel within one battle, or Luffy making new moves up to foil Ener's mantra. They always pull stuff out of thier asses.
All Sanji even did was spin his leg faster.
Theres no developing that.Zorro: Gorilla and Asura-Transformation => breaks Tekkai without further explanation why
Mr.1.
Because the priests are the 'endfights' of the arc. If you count like that you can count
the Franky / Galley La battles also.Key words.
"All in a row."Notice I didn't count Shura and Satori.
-
The Asura broke tekkai and was unavoidable and beat Kaku.
I never, EVER read the scans as carefully as I do tanks so maybe it's possible that I completely missed it, but Zoro never even broke the Tekkai with 'Ichibugin' (One Silver Mist) he just cut through the Rankyaku turning it to mist and then an off-guard Kaku. That's how I recall reading it but I could have mist something. HAHAHAHA!!! GET IT!???? 'MIST' SOMETHING!!!????
-
And thus the fights became less about superpowers and more about fighting.
Bravo to this I say.Really, I'm inclined to agree. Most of the fights were all out brawls, which I absolutely loved. Franky vs Fukuro, Chopper vs. Kumadori, and Sanji Vs Jabura are now three of my favorite fights in the series. It was less about "hey, look at my wacky powers!" and more about beating the hell out of each other.
As for the villain not having a kind of charm, I sort of take that back. Lucci being a silent, bloodthirsty badass is a nice change of pace, but that's still not my favorite kind of villain. But, I really love his bloodlust, and how he seems to genuinely love fighting and stomping people into the dirt.
I also forgot about Spandam, who I absolutely love. He's almost the OP equivalent of Kefka; a weasely, goofy, manipulative, complete bastard of a government official seeking power. Though, he isn't looking for omnipotence as Kefka did. He's absolutely derranged and hateable; when he went crazy with glee of gaining the ancient weapons, and then beat the shit out of Robin, my respect for him shot way up. I also have a thing for goofy villains. All I know is, I love seeing Spandam in action, and right now he's probably my second favorite villain (at least in terms of villainy).
-
I'm still shocked at how damned brutal Chopper Vs. Kumadori was. I mean the two of them were such goofballs. But it was more bloody and badass then Zoro's fight.
Chopper is now a badass.
Rather then the coward from Skypiea. -

Yeah this basically sums up my view of things so far. Good comparison with Kefka there. He's diabolical, with some goofiness thrown in there.
About the fights. I especially liked the beginning of Franky vs Fukurou since it was just a brawl, punches flying all over the place. Gotta love it.
-
And really folks, it could be so much worse.
Would you rather it be the evil male model catwalk run through woods alot and fight for 3 volumes over not much festival of man love that Naruto has become? -
for me, its all these bullshit power-ups. you spend more time trying to figure out what the hell just happened than enjoying the fight. I was ok until this most recen chapter. kakus crazy girafe moods seemed stupid and zoros finisher was less than spectacular(kinda stupid actually)
but kaku did mention zoros eyes having legendary decent or something, which was the highlight of the chapter. but I did not like zoros new technique or kakus fucked up body techniques.
Im interested in the lucchi fight greatly. and was interested in every chapter until about 415 when sanji and zoros bs power-ups start. but now I just wanna see what happens afterwards.
and luffys fights always put a smile on my face.
but this zoro vs. kaku fight was imo the worst one piece fight ever, which is a shame considering how much I liked kaku(my 2nd favorite cp9) and how good the fight began. But oda went too far with kakus moves, and zoros techniques was like WTF?!?!?!. I wanna read rushs high quality for more explanations(they do a good job with puns and stuff, which is essential when reading one piece manga)
as for length, all the fights are the right size. I dont remember any really long one piece fights(except maybe enel and kreig, but can you call everything in between fighting?) I was very pleased with sanjis fight after a while(after I kinda made my own sense outta sanjis move, but stil dont like how there were no side effects) and everyone elses were right on cue, but zoros was just bad. longer fights is not the issue. Go start reading the sakura vs. sasori fight in naruto at the pace of one chapter a week and then try asking for longer fight.
