I think we need a 2014 music thread now that 2013 is over.
No idea about what music will come out this year at the moment so y'all fill up with hopes, recommendations and predictions for the year first.

Looking forward to St Vincent's new album like I said in the other thread, Slough Feg's new album, and River City Extension's new album.
Actress - Ghettoville LP is my first 2014 album. Solid stuff.

Those are the big ones I suppose.
Can't wait for Shakira. Hopefully it's good, and hopefully she won't take another 3 year break in between album releases.
Apparently, she's doing something in the vain of when she started her career. That sounds good, hopefully she can actually get appreciated here.

Also release date is February 18.
2014 Fall of Troy album? No wai.
Can't remember to forget you is the song Shakira made, and it features rihanna.
Sounds a little basic to some people. Some are saying her voice doesn't sound good on it, which is a shame since her voice in her spanish songs is usually great. She doesn't seem to have much diversity with her voice when she's singing in english; it doesn't always fit the tone of the song.
The song was alright! But Shakira started off weak in the beginning. Rihanna outperformed her in the verses.
Alright I guess. If it's like Wildlife gonna have to sift through the whole album before finding the ones that really resonate.
Agalloch's new album is going to be called The Serpent & The Sphere.
Best album of 2014, calling it now.
Slough Feg's new album is up for stream.

I'm only on the first track right now but it's sounding pretty good.
Edit: St Vincent's new album leaked. It's great. And I'm glad because I was getting pretty worried listening to the released singles. Still don't like Digital Witness all that much but it's fine in the context of the album. And every other song is pretty good.
Just listened through the new St. Vincent album. And I was… impressed. I was expecting to not like it as Digital Witness never won me over, and the song just kind of grates on me, (and still does) but on the whole the album impressed.
That said, it's my least favorite of her efforts. The electronic edge just doesn't work for me.
Nothing will ever top Marry Me for me, not even Strange Mercy, which is arguably the best of all her albums.
In other news, a couple weeks ago, Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish) released the lead track for his concept album based on Don Rosa's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. And it's fantastic
Am really enjoying Maxïmo Park and Lawrence Arms albums this year.
If you like Animals as Leaders you might like Chon. They've got a new EP out.
New La Dispute out.

New Triptykon leaked and it rules hard.

Also, Trap Them released a new song. Face is ready to be wrecked.

New Wovenhand is pretty delicious. I don't know if anything will ever hit the mark of Consider the Birds for me, but I still need to give this one a few more listens before figuring out just how much I love it.
So Epica's new album, The Quantum Enigma, was released yesterday. And I think it's absolutely amazing. After they made a bit of a misstep (imo) with Requiem for the Indifferent, this was exactly the kind of bounce back I was hoping for. Perhaps the best part of the album for me is how they returned to their roots, using the style from their earlier albums as a framework, while still retaining the more recent, evolved sounds as well. It's a combination which I thinks works really well.
New Agalloch streaming free at NPR Shit is so tight.
Devin Townsend's Casualties of Cool was released on wednesday. I've jamming it ever since. I was discussing it with my good friend and we think that somehow the dude invented post-country.

Eyehategod's self-titled also leaked since I last posted. I was surprised to see a bit more hardcore on this one, but at its soul, it's the same pissed off, strung out southern-fired sludge we've come to expect form them, which I can't complain about. The only track I can find up on youtube is the hardcore opener, which isn't fully representative of the album, but still really good.

The best I heard until now
And yeah, except Eyehategods and Enthroneds records. (The Arch Enemy is coming)
I don't even watch Game of Thrones and that gave me a good laugh. Would totally buy an album of HBO-based grindcore.
This album snuck up on me, but it's incredible:
Ought has a real punky energy to them centered around Talking Heads influence, though I think that description really sells them short. I encourage anyone to listen to it, since I think it would have a lot of appeal among the music fans here. If I have to choose a highlight for you to check before you fully invest yourself (though the whole album really merits a listen since it's got some versatility):

New Owen Pallett album is pretty great.
Adult Swim Singles 2014 has already begun, here's the expected schedule:
! June 9th - Giorgio Moroder
June 16th - Machinedrum
June 23rd - Destruction Unit
July 4th - Fatima Al-Qadiri
July 7th - Tim Hecker
July 14th - Speedy Ortiz
July 21st - Sleep
July 28th - Future (w/animated video)
August 4th - Diarrhea Planet
August 11th - Oozing Wound
August 18th - Captain Murphy
August 25th - Deafheaven
September 1st - RP Boo
September 8th - Mastodon Feat. Gibby Haynes
September 15th - Run The Jewels
September 22nd - KA
Thoughts so far: Giorgio's theme is mosntrous, but I'm kinda put off by Machinedrum. Maybe it's the chillwave-vibes, never felt comfortable around it for some reason.
Odd, I though there'd be 17 tracks, hopefully there's a bonus and continuing the arithmetic progression of tracks since 2010.
I can't remember if I posted this in this thread or not, but The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's new album is pretty good.
Electric Wizard released a new track from their upcoming album.
I absolutely adore Mastodon's new album.
Great mix of the crazy levels of progginess on Crack The Skye and the more direct riff driven stuff on The Hunter.
Beautiful.
I'm mixed on the new Mastodon. I really didn't like the Hunter, but have loved everything else Mastodon's put out, so you can see where I would be split on their latest offering, haha.
Number 1 on Radio Disney. Enrique Iglesias on Bailando.
LETS GO ENRIQUE.

Lol since it moves back toward the Mastodon you like while retaining some of the Mastodon you don't?
Yeah, I can see your dilemma.
Tbh, I love Mastodon for the range of their music, so I wasn't bothered by the shift that was noticeable in The Hunter.
I think Leviathan will always be my favourite though.
Oh yeah, I have no problem with Mastodon shifting styles. I had some friends who fell off the train at Crack the Skye, which I loved and basically kept on repeat when I was first listening to it. I just didn't really like the style of the Hunter. Found it boring. The album was a big hit with other people, though, and it was their most popular album, but most of the people I know directly felt about the same way I did. It's a pretty divisive album.
Leviathan's my favorite, too. That one is everyone's favorite, haha. It's such a great album, though, that you can't help but love it. It's just full of spastic energy, atmospheric passages, strange riffwork and restless drums all in the package of a well-composed concept album. Whenever the album gets around to that last act with Hearts Alive, it just comes together so well. Man, I really need to listen through Leviathan again, haha.
–--------------------
In other new music: I finally got around to listening to Midnight's new album and it's pretty great. The album's really just more of the same from Midnight, but their music hits the sweetspot between Venom and Motorhead that just gets me.

Just finished Swans - To Be Kind. They're making it harder and harder for me to form an opinion on their stuff because that's hard to do with albums that last over two hours. I did enjoy it though. I'll have to listen to the Seer and Soundtracks for the Blind again.
Their three neofolk albums and their self titled EP are still my favorite things by them though I think.

I feel like we're going to get on like a house on fire, Wagomu.
I can feel the flames.
Question for you all: I haven't gotten any albums since St. Vincent (which has definitely grown on me since it came out–like a lot) was released; what 3 albums do I need to pick up? Any genre goes. Best three of the year (so far) in your opinion.
In other news (ridiculously unknown) Swedish prog-metal act Seventh Wonder released a video for the first song off their new album which still has no release date. It seems like they listened everyone who criticized them for being "too pretty for prog metal" and just gave them a giant middle finger. Seriously. The music video is ridiculously. But hey, the song is 3:30 minutes of ridiculously complex layered prog-metal, so there's nothing to complain about. It took me a good 5 listens to catch all the intricacies of the song. (But only one listen to be all over dat bass line. Yum.) That said, it's definitely more poppy than I was expecting. I mean, I really like the song, but if it is representative of the entire album I'm going to be really disappointed. (However, Alley Cat was like that too, and it was not even close to anything else on that album.)

Here's three to check:
1. Ought - More Than Any Other Day
Wrote about this one above. Really fun post-punky album that hits the spot between youthful energy and existential angst. This one's a pretty easy and worthwhile listen.
[hide]
2. Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
Tom G. Warrior (Celtic Frost) has really been working wonders with Triptykon. His first album with this band was phenomenal and Melana Chasmata is a tight follow-up. Dark, brooding and grand; this is the kind of music Batman burns offerings to.

3. Casualties of Cool - Casualties of Cool
The latest pet project from musical mad genius Devin Townsend, Casualties of Cool is a pretty unique album. It takes the sounds of country and folk music and transfigures them into an ambient atmospheric soundscape, shaped into a concept album. Casualties is somewhat low key, but it's definitely a smooth ride and well worth the listen.

Alongside Ought's "More Than Any Other Day" this is my most listened to album in 2014 I think, but they might just be the latest couple I have most heard the past few months, since I alreayd forget what was earlier in this year
It's a folk artist who writes about usually Weird subjects for this genre (his last album was emotional singer/songwriter stuff, except about living in a sci-fi post-apocalypse future with killer robots and he absolutely nailed it), but this album is him picking up the electric guitar and overdriven synths and writing about himself. It still works very very well and he's got a good ear for power pop.
i neglect this thread a lot unfortunately im sorry

Sun Kil Moon - Benji
Swans - To Be Kind
Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else
And while I haven't listened to it yet you should check out Natural Snow Buildings - The Night Country and maybe replace Cloud Nothings with it.
Haha it's neat seeing that in the past couple of years somehow Natural Snow Buildings has become a name I can hear on an anime message board (or does this just mean that /mu/ discovered them or something) but reccing albums you haven't heard is silly
I haven't heard it either
I'd like to but I haven't been in an NSB mood in several years after they were the soundtrack to my 2008 and while it would cement them in the present, until then I'm kind of putting off their new stuff until I just get it without thinking about it because memories are silly
Listened to NSB's new album and it was pretty good. I especially liked Sandman Traps, and it's kind of more upbeat compared to a lot of their other songs. I think the album had more vocals than most other albums have too. Which I don't mind.
With their new album, Rise Against finds their way back to their old selves. I really like the new Album even so I haven't often listened to it yet. First listening already gave me the old vibes. Ticket is booked for the concert in berlin in november. Can't wait.
I don't know why I've heard some people saying Tune-Yards' new album wasn't good. Water Fountain is still my favorite song on it.
I'm sure many will praise it, but from my first listen new Opeth is boring as shit. Yeah, it's very 70's and it has tons of vintage keyboard sounds and it does the oriental thingie ala Kashmir (not exactly, of course, but you catch my drift), but by satanic Christ is it a damned bore. I think the drummer fell asleep midway through the record after repeating the same mid-paced slightly off beat.
Now, just wait for Pain of Salvation to follow that same fucking path too, which they already started doing. Great.
Is Opeth's new album the progressive rock type stuff and not death metal? And I never liked Pain of Salvation anyway. Last.fm recommended them to me because I liked Opeth but I felt they were pretty meh.

It follows Heritage in that it has absolutely no Death Metal growls or distorted guitars. Except Heritage still had some songs like Slither and similar stuff which you could at least consider Dio/Rainbow levels of "heavy rock/metal", and this has non of that. It's very mellow, toned down, ambiental stuff. If that's your thing, you might like it, since it's definitely quality stuff both production and instrumentation wise, but I felt absolutely nothing but profound boringness while listening to it.
is by far the catchiest/"""heaviest""" song on the album. Let that be a warning. If you enjoyed Heritage, give it a try, but if you liked Ghost of Perdition, Still Life or Blackwater Park, stay away from it.
As for Pain of Salvation, last two albums (Road Salt 1 and 2) threw their "progressive metal" style to the thrash bin and went full 70's rock mode too. Which, by the way, is something that's becoming a fucking trend and I'm starting to hate it with a passion.
They still managed to create
though, and I kinda dig Road Salt 2, if only because it's impossibly catchy. But I did like their earlier stuff much better (The Perfect Element in particular).Just listened to Ulaan Passerine - Byzantium Crow. If anyone here listens to Natural Snow Buildings you should also listen to Steven R Smith and his side projects, which Ulaan Passerine is one of them. Similar music but typically shorter songs. Byzantium Crow is 2 ~17 minute long songs though. Pretty good, I think I like it more than NSB's entry for this year.
I've been listening to LeAnn Rimes' new comp album, which is all club remixes of her hits. It's an album clearly for people like me, who prefer their country when it's actually progressive house. :P
The new YOB album is up and about the internet, for all of your doom fans. For all of you non-doom fans I would still encourage you to give it a try if something heavy, dark and meditative seems to strike your fancy. YOB are one of my favorite doom bands and this album is straight up legit.
so stoked
