Sexism in this chapter and OP in general

Pretty much.

What just happened in this thread?

I just wish the princess would have been another lie that the dwarves fell for instead of a generic damsel in distress.
-
Well t was fun to read. Got an idea for new avatar thanks to those discusions.

i know but some of them are…oh well, let's just say i expect better from people and i'm always dissapointed. Also, i can't share porn. I would get banned. Maybe if mods give me permission i can share some literary eroticism. If you are kindred to literature it will get you like a rampaging bull in no time, lol b:
erotic literature is good. I've been hooked on Bataille all summer

rofl it is
i kinda ignored it and felt a tiny shred of sadness for yelling at a guy with an aokiji sig but now that i actually looked at it i dont feel bad at all

I would gladly take it, but maybe that goes for others too. Start by not random infracting for having a different opinion.

@CCC:
OP of this topic is spot-on with the bullet points.
Chapter was god awful.
Arguing these points against people who refuse to acknowledge anything is wrong is a depressing, losing battle.
I'm out.Seeing as how MP and MS gave different connotations to that whole encounter (blatant sexism vs. not-so-greatly-executed machismo parody), and since I assume you've read it in Japanese, what do you think Oda was really going for here?

Aohige already clarified that it is kinda sexist on the original script too.
He also said it's totally hyperbolic and not to be taken seriously at all.
But it has more to do with Oda's track record, specially post time skip. People are piling up all his "feats" (ehem), and with each one it gets harder to defend him.

Hey, I learned that an ¿idiom? ¿slang? that goes something like "taking sand out of one's vagina" exists in this world. Thanks to this thread!
I still have no idea what's it supposed to mean, though.

Keyword in my post was OTHERS, I read what you said the first time.
I'm officially starting the Fairy tail avatar rebel movement right here.
With nakama power-ups we will beat the mod system and burn flags.
So if you want to rebel and think that you should be allowed to have a opinion because you don't think this chapter was not sexist at all. Get yourself a fancy fairy tail avatar now.
I already have 1 follower.
Didn't know I could change color theme.
It's on the bottom left of the forum, the akainu theme

Sorry. Not touching this.
I honestly don't see much of a difference between the two versions, but that's naturally informed by my opinion of the whole situation.

@Cyan:
The problem is that the majority of the manga section are fucking morons.
Its reached a level of toxicity where it's turning regular posters brains into porridge.

Would you look at that. Thanks. That's handy, but I think I prefer this blue one.
Anyone care to guess which theme Darth uses?

So unfair yet so entertaining! Please feel free to continue until the next season of GoT.

Yes. This is probably it in the end. He's done these kind of jokes before, but in this same arc there's a lot of the same habits piling up. Still doesn't mean everything that comes out of a female character's mouth is sexist, though, which is what I find annoying.
-
Racism and a stereotype based on gender aren't even close to being the same. Don't even consider comparing the two.
What even is this. How are they any different, at least in how they should be treated?
-

Saying someone has sand in their vagina is a way to disparage them as being overly sensitive by likening them to a woman, whether they're actually a woman or not (seems to actually be more of an insult when directed at a man, because you're questioning his manliness. Similar to the insult, "pussy").

Wonder where the term comes from. I just thought he referred to women who can't get any. And are frustrated as a result.

Saw this earlier, went to work, then came back to find it still going. Didn't think it'd last an hour, but ok:
I said it in the chapter thread, but the whole thing for me feels like when the comedian you love to listen to crosses the line. It's not that the comedian was trying extra hard to offend you in particular, s/he just hit onto a subject area that you didn't like or maybe believes something is funny that you or a majority do not.
But here's the thing - the line is different for everyone. Some people might not even have a line and will never get offended (these people do not internet a lot). Oda might be making fun of the manly genre, or a particular set of female traits, or gender roles or whatever have you, and it's all right to have your own opinions on how you feel about that. Is this going to make me stop reading OP? Probably not, but this will be one of the scenes I skip during the anime or on any re-read, that's how much of a low-light this was for me.
-
fairy tail is the most sexist shounen series. no matter how OP Erza gets. It has OP's fanservice 10x and Naruto's useless characters 10x. On top of that all that nasty subtext.

Plus it's just a bad shounen. Have you read History's Strongest Disciple? That one is even more ridiculous, eventhough it started off with a somewhat interesting concept.

It's not WHAT you say. It's HOW you say it.
Everyone's allowed a differing opinion.
At the same time, this does not mean you are immune to being called out on it if that opinion is awful or misinformed.

Oh, c'mon, Triple C! Sacrifice yourself for the greater good of the community!
Nah, just joking.
BUT, could you explain the Jinbe's cover story speech-pattern? MS's translated it as "blablabla-SEA, blablabla-SEA". Is it correct?

Oh, I see. It must be a pretty "new" neologism? It's a pretty retarded idiom, honestly. Though it has a really powerful sound.

Pretty much my impression as well.
The interaction between Pink and Franky is fitting, funny even, but the forced kiss and the reactions after went too far for my taste.
Remove the kiss and the situaton would be still questionable, but much easier to swallow.
-

That's one way to interpret it I guess.
A lot of speech quirks in OP are totally random though, so it doesn't necessarily have to imply "sea." Could just be the sound, "shii."Aohige's way more qualified to answer, though.
-
This thread is anything but rational.
For those who are sticking to the "but it was only a joke" logic, I agree, but it was poorly done.
The joke becomes questionable not with the hug, or the kiss, or even Franky's and Pink's statements, which were all part of it, but by the reaction that Shuuin had on page 13.
Rather than being upset at the way she was treated, she admired them for degrading her. She was introduced as a strong, and dangerous character and became both simple and pathetic.
I would've of been content if she was angry, and, in the next chapter, defeated both men.
Lastly, I don't think Ota did this to insult OPs female fanbase; it was just a joke that went to far.

yeah i agree with this post too
i mentioned to some friends earlier, i can kind of ignore the bad proportions and women not having great fights and other stuff like that in OP (i dont particularly care for it, but i dont really expect much from it)
but pushing aside a female character BECAUSE she's a woman, regardless of the fact that she's a fodder character basically, it's kind of fucked up. like, going back to Zoro's intro arc with Kuina and him not caring that she's a girl, really kind of set the tone for me and this manga that, regardless of who you are (a wimp like koby, a girl like rebecca in a bikini, pirates, marines, civilians, etc) you have a basic right to get stronger and challenge opponents. this chapter messes with that fundamental law that's kinda ingrained into the story for me, all for the sake of a joke (and a weirdly OOC one at that)
and obviously it did hit a sour note with a fair amount of people

I saw it, it was a double post!

The thing is, it's pretty much the same for someone like Sanji for example. He gets abused all the time and even admires the likes of Nami for degrading him. Another example would be Hancock. So if anything OP is equally sexist, at least in that regard.

To be honest..if the story really offends you that much dont read it..

Good idea also if women don't want to be raped they can stay locked up alone inside their house all day. Solid plan.

Personally i didnt find the kiss any offensive..
Rape analogy wasnt good but i wasnt talking about the actual thing.. Just the fact that people equate a kiss to something so big .Someone finds something offensiveor unethical.. They create threads have a discussion.. What does it help..? What result are we trying toachieve..
-
I'm not even going to argue with you because I just realized whose alt account you are :)

Yeah and I should stop eating delicious red meat every 3 hours just because it's not healthy.
Foolio Jooooke ! Yohohohohoho !
-
The thing that bothered me was the kiss, it was kind of out of character for Franky. He hasn't done anything recently to suggest that he would do that out of nowhere.
The swooning came after was not surprising. When Pink was introduced, women were clearly swooning all over, that should have been much more offensive than a simple kiss.
The dude's attire is awful.Franky might had a point, she is probably inexperienced and maybe Franky is actually attractive?
Besides, she is weak compared to the two, it would be best if she stayed out of it and she knew it. It's far from degrading. -

Well i eat meat because its good protein..
I dont know what meat you're getting.. :ninja:
But in the end im against sexism, ill just let everyone else talk..
-
@Monkey:
And entirely unlike One Piece where the macho characters keep emphasizing the women should stay out of things, Gutt's respect levels for her are directly connected to how useless or not she is in the other direction.
In fairness to Franky's character, I feel like he only did that cause he felt she was someone useless, not just cause she was a girl. I can't see Franky trying that kind of thing on say, Robin or Nami (even if they were his enemies). Heck he seems pretty chill towards the sisters that followed him around if I recall correctly.
That being said, I think the joke was overdone in poor taste by including the part about kissing the girl unwillingly and then telling her to shut up. It came across sexist, and unfortunately Oda does not have the greatest track record in regards to sexism. Had he left that specific part out, it obviously would have gone over much better.
I really think Oda is unfortunately working on a trope of machismo that we often see in older TV shows and movies (and some new ones too). Where the "teenage girl" falls for the "older experienced guy" over something like a kiss. And the older guy brushes her off.
An unfortunate instance of a joke crossing into territory unapologetically, and made even more unfortunate by the fact Oda does seem to have a sexist tendancy.
-
And here we go again. What's next? That Oda is racist for depicting tribesmen as cannibals? Oh…!
-
Good idea also if women don't want to be raped they can stay locked up alone inside their house all day. Solid plan.
Really dude? Ugh. I hate what this post implies.
Far be it from me to describe what it implies, ya'll can wrangle that out if you choose to, but anyway I thought this was a terrible chapter - it didn't offend me - but I've thought it's high-time for Oda to kick it into the eleventh gear for a dozen chapters now and he just hasn't. The SMILE factory captain or whatever also has one of the worst designs I have seen in anything. That's what I found offensive, as it ties into the point Sheep's been bringing up.
I don't have the patience or willingness to elaborate so catch ya'll later, I'm gonna rewatch some Moral Orel (available for free in its entirety on Adult Swim's website).
