As of this chapter, the colosseum fighters are all amazing and I will fight you if you say otherwise.
Chapter 753: " Battle"
-
-
Luffy mentions Daruma in this chapter. Isn't that the name of the cookie cutter from Hody pirates?
It's a kind of Japanese doll that Dagama resembles.
Check Schabrak's avatar for an example.
-
A quote from recent movie Edge of Tomorrow
"Battle is a great redeemer"
Fits perfectly for Dagama loooool–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It's a kind of Japanese doll that Dagama resembles.
Check Schabrak's avatar for an example.
Oh so Luffy didn't actually confuse the two characters haha
-
Oda is going hardcore Shonen mode with this 4 level hill. I don't dislike it though. I guess next week, Cavendish and Kyros will face Diamante and Trebol on level 3.
-
@Panda:
Other people have touched on this already, but this is the most bafflingly horrible reasoning. Just about any 'little character moment' is going to be 'pointless' to the arc its in, in the sense you seem to mean here. That's what makes it a 'little' moment. Yet a story that had no such moments, purely because they would be 'pointless', would be a much, much worse story.
You misunderstood.
If, and I stretch this out, if you are going to make them integral part of the arc, then for the love of God, give them screen time, give them development.
What do I care that Orlombus got hit by Lao G? Both of those characters were barely in the arc thus far. There no involvement, no connection.
If they are to be throwaway characters, then Oda has given them too much panel time.
If they are not, he has given them too little.
That's all there is to it.
-
I love all these moments for guys like Abdullah & Jeet or Dagama this chapter. Such characters would only appear as one-note bad guy fodder in any other story - like they were initially introduced here too - but despite how they look, Oda turns it around and still gives them their own awesome scenes. Think about it, in how many series would you see the protagonist getting angry on behalf of some dude that looks like friggin' Eggman?
I also wonder if they are going to ride Agyo next, lol.
truth. another reason I love this series
-
Pretty good chapter. We got updates on everything that matters without it feeling rushed or boring.
-
@Panda:
Actually, now that it's happened a second time, I'm starting to find the whole Law flashback fake-out thing to be fairly amusing. I hope there's at least one more.
Third, cause I count the time when we first learned about Corazon when Law was defeated the first time while Block D was going on and honestly seemed like a good a time as any to learn about the history between the two. Personally felt like that was a good enough cliffhanger, so having these teases interspersed throughout these chapters seem more tedious than enticing, especially since these panels can be spent fleshing out other scenes and all the info in these teases could be held off until we actually learn the story in full.
But to each their own.
-

Screentime such as the Colosseum fights? You talk like those guys were introduced just now.
They're important in the sense that they're the result of Luffy's ability to make allies. Not all of them require Chinjao-level development. This is like asking for the backstory of all the 40 Captain allies that appeared during Marineford.
You sound like you're asking for some sort of stupid segregation between major and minor characters, where only the major characters who got flashbacks and shit should do anything and that minor characters need development in order to even have a chance of having a small spotlight moment and deserve our care, with no middle ground.
-
After reading the past chapter and this one, I can´t stop thinking about the Match ups for the executives. Honestly, I believe not all the colloseum fighters will be matchup against the executives, but instead their matchups will be swap and switched around. I actually see the pairing as…
Viola vs Gladius.. as the later has pinpoited clearly that he loathes her treason
Dellinger vs Bartolomeo.. as Bart stood in the middle of Dellinger and Bellamy, I´m sure hornyheels would like some payback.
Lao G against Chinjao...2 old dudes duking it out
Vise against...anyone, I have to say that I feel his personality and power so stale that I couldn´t care less
and Baby 5 against Robin just so that robin gets to fight someone..then again... viola is with riku so that chance is not possible... what a waste

How long have you been reading One Piece? Just an unrelated question..
Because this is not new to this arc. In the slightest.
-
disappointing i spent 2 weeks waiting for law's flashback
-
No one else realized that the conversation between Doflamingo and Bellamy, heavily implies that they knew eachother before either of them became pirates, almost as if they grew up together…..If that's the case, then that would mean Bellamy is also from Mariejois....
-
I just laugh at Law this got be one of worst days he ever had .
He lost only comfortable thing he had for while now:Ucy.Good chapter overall, im glad gladiators get more screen time and Mingo officers aswell, Dellinger was a good suprise(quite brutal).
Slow pace for the constant breaks Oda had for various reasons(family, health, vacation and business) work well enough for me, its hard to get lost with story and almost everybody had a good amount of screen/panel time .Nice legs you got there Kyros hahahaha.

Chalk that one up to shoddy translation. Aohige never mentioned anything like this.
-
This chapter was great, IMO.
Dellinger was amazing, Bellamy is ripped, Cabbage is funny, and the dwarves are adorable (although I do think their sudden rebellion could have been given a little more emotional developement.)
Also, I mentioned that I think Dellinger is a top a while back (because he has no ass) and I think it's safe to assume I was right with all of the impaling that happened this chapter.
EDIT: And I love the idea that there's a whole society of animal!fish somewhere in the ocean, that aren't fishmen/merpeople, with police and lost children and all that.
-

So then this isn't what Doflamingo actually said?
"You and I want different things, our goals have not been the same since the beginning"
"You just had to become a "pirate"
"But me, I was different"
"Anything was fine by me"
"As long as I was able to destroy this world" -

Considering that Bellamy was just a rookie 2 years ago, he's nowhere close to Doula Mongo's age.

@Miss:
How long have you been reading One Piece? Just an unrelated question..
Because this is not new to this arc. In the slightest.
Almost exactly five years now.
And I know. I really do.
But, to dream of perfection is a privilege of fools.
Also, while it was always present, I don't think I ever felt it to a such degree like here.
-

it kind of sounds like that's how do flamingo felt before he left mariejois…Bellamy wanted to be a pirate, but anything was fine with Dr as long as he could cause chaos

"As long as I was able to destroy this world"Sure, you can interprete this dialgue the way you did. But I wouldn't say that it's heavily implied. Bellamy/Mingo's relationship can't be very old since Doffy actually cares for the oldest members of the family.

Screentime such as the Colosseum fights? You talk like those guys were introduced just now.
Still too little, if they were meant to be integral part of the arc.

Question: Out of those, how many got to do anything? Two, right? Two that have been expanded upon?
And it made sense during the war. It doesn't here.
You sound like you're asking for some sort of stupid segregation between major and minor characters, where only the major characters who got flashbacks and shit should do anything and that minor characters need development in order to even have a chance of having a small spotlight moment and deserve our care, with no middle ground.
Ehm… yes? That is the point? We have main, secondary and tertiary characters. Right now, coloseum fighters feel to me like tertiary characters that, out of necessity, fill up the roles of secondary characters.
If they are going to have important role, like figting executives, then the proper character development should be in order.
-
Was I the only one who found incredibly weird Luffy calling Dagama by his name?
-
@.access:
Was I the only one who found incredibly weird Luffy calling Dagama by his name?
In mangastream's version he calls him Schabrak.
-
I'm leaving in few minutes, so just very quick:
I did not said that the characters were pointless, but that the scene itself was.
I would've actually prefered one-on-one fight including Dellinger, then what we got here.
If you are going to run the pace into the ground, at least give me something in return. Instead of some half-assed three panels for character fight scenes, give me chapter for each one.
At least then it would be some development for those characters. Scenes, not moments.
Ahh I get you now. Dont worry I agree with you now. Hopefully the arc pays off in the end. We'll see I guess.
I think when people stop running or moving in this arc, it will become more focused.
-
It was an alright chapter. If for one thing, I am so glad that the strength of the guys helping Luffy is consistent; Sulieman, Orlumbus, Dagama and Boo all got attacked and only the first didn't get right back up.
-
This was a meh chapter. Funny, i was actually looking forward to the flashback too lol
-
Bellamy is back… I Hope he becomes a Fight, or Brownbeard of this Arc?....
-
Still too little, if they were meant to be integral part of the arc.
They're opening a path for Luffy. Minor characters do this all the time. Galley-La, Inazuma, Whitebeard Commanders…
Lulu and Tilestone sure were developed, huh?
Question: Out of those, how many got to do anything? Two, right? Two that have been expanded upon?
And it made sense during the war. It doesn't here.
I like how you just say "it doesn't make sense" and call it a day. I'm not going to take this half-assed argument seriously. At least give some explanation.

Because fighting executives is something only major characters do.
And it's not like they're going to win anyway. Dellinger already took down 2 of them. At least let them have some time in the spotlight. Heck, they might even get some of this development you speak of while going down.
-
Quite a forgettable chapter, looks like i will not get to see Law's flash back anytime soon
-

They also got panel time in accordance to that. They weren't for example, fighting CP9.
And the entire opening the path by Inazuma and Whitebeard Commanders took one chapter. That was way faster then what we got here. This is fifth chapter of that.
I like how you just say "it doesn't make sense" and call it a day. I'm not going to take this half-assed argument seriously. At least give some explanation.
Explenation: Whitebeard and his commander were part of Ace's story, not Luffy's. Marineford was story of Luffy's struggle to save his brother, and of changing of ages. Neither of those two needed the other commanders to be developed, and more importantly, little to no panel time was given to them, or the allied captains.
Coloseum warrios do not posses that excuse.
Because fighting executives is something only major characters do. See Genbo vs. Yama,
I actually like Genbo vs Yama more. At least that one was focused.
And it's not like they're going to win anyway. Dellinger already took down 2 of them. At least let them have some time in the spotlight. Heck, they might even get some of this development you speak of while going down.
Perhaps they will.
And people were saying Bastille will get to do something this arc.
I will remain sceptical to any optimistic ideas for the future that remains unknown to us.
-
Just read the chapter and…. I wasn't impressed it feels like One Piece is reaching Dragon Ball Z levels of constant set up and the breaks are making it worse. I really hope when luffy eventually reaches Doflamingo things will start getting epic with the fights cause right now I haven't been looking forward to one piece as much as other series I read.
-

But didn't most of the Colosseum gladiators get more screentime than the war commanders and allies so far? Considering that this is Luffy's story, it only makes sense. They're to Luffy what those allies were to Whitebeard.
Also, don't forget that those guys are also being built-up for future arcs as Luffy will be needing allies against the Yonkou. Unlike locals like Galley-La and the Shandian Warriors, they're not tied exclusively to Dressrosa.
You would have to be pretty naive to believe that those guys will only play a role during Dressrosa.
-

They are getting more screen time, but it is a repetition of the same thing over and over, and not anything that would advance their characters.
They are, to be more metaphorical, more tools for Luffy and plot to use, and less actual characters.

I'm not as convinced of that as you are, to be honest. But that is a lot longer discussion then I'm willing to tackle on this hour.
-
@krule274:
That's it? Nothing else was even remotely important? Bellamy? The fighters working together to get Luffy to the top?
Nah, those didn't matter at all.
For me, that's it.
-
The power of Elizabello II's smack in the head is amazing!
If Elizabello smacked Doflamingo on the head, he might have a sudden change of heart. -

Hey Darth,
Having fun with this week's installment of One Piece, are you :)
You don't have to be convinced that these tools-for-Luffy-and-plot-to-use,-and-less-actual-characters will be used later. You can expect it
The plot (as you like to call it recently) is building an army of allies for Luffy. Oda has decided to have some fun with the colosseum guys.
-
I'm trying to stay optimistic here, but the more the Colosseum fighters and Tontatta are featured the less interested I become. I don't find them interesting (but I don't particularly dislike them either) and I don't have any real attachment to them, although I'm hoping that will change. I wonder if I would have felt the same about Water 7 and Galley-La, Franky Family, Kokoro, etc if I had read that arc weekly like this one. The difference is I found those characters more interesting sooner than later.
On a more positive note, I find the backstory of Doffy's takeover, Riku's fall grace, Kyros, etc to be interesting so I'm still hopeful for this arc overall. I'm sure my interest will re-ignite when the Doffy/Law flashback occurs since I have a keen interest in both of them. I'm also hoping for some to the brink of death defining moment type fights for the Straw Hats.
-
Expected more but who am I to complain.
-
Another okay chapter…sucks about suleman I love his design I was hoping he was stronger but might make a comeback later on I hope. Dellinger has a pretty cool fighting style I like the use of the helmet. Confirmed kryos is on a man hunt. Looks like we're going to see Cavendish vs trebol kryos vs diamante and luffy/law vs doflamingo. I think oda is starting to shift the arc into third gear moving things along. Next couple chapters should be intense.
-
Nice chapter. Love cabbage hope he fights Trebol. One thing thats bugging me wit
Though aside from the possibility of off-paneled fights is the fact that it is still day time. I know Oda isn't the best with progressing real time in the story world but considering all that's happened since the 3pm meeting point (block c,d and final, alongside the ussop stuff plus the birdcage and all that's happened since) you would think more time would have progressed. -
The power of Elizabello II's smack in the head is amazing!
If Elizabello smacked Doflamingo on the head, he might have a sudden change of heart.Screw Garp, that's what I call a true Fist of Love!
-
the problem of Elizabello is his going to charge before he attacks
like the jajanken of gon in hxh
Garp doesnt need to charge just use armament and then boom! -
@Devil:
Screw Garp, that's what I call a true Fist of Love!
Then you realize that Garp can actually break Barto's barriers.
-
Oh my gosh, can we stop teasing backstories if they keep going right on back to fighting, I CAN'T TAKE THIS MUCH LONGER!!
-
Feels like the last couple of months of One Piece has just been the characters running around and jumping to different characters every couple of pages. Can we just get a fight please or at least the flashback. Also I hate Bellamy.
The Dellinger scene reminded me of Freiza impaling Krillin, I was kind of expecting him to start shaking Suileman around like Freiza
-
Quite the mixed opinions for this chapter, but it seems that even the dissenters of this arc enjoyed it to some degree, at least a lot of them. This is an arc that really seems to be more about tastes for each individual reader. I'm on the side that really likes this arc, but it's not without it's problems.
I don't mind the jumping around, but the last bunch of chapters could've been easily condensed, or certain things could've been focused on then at the end of the chapter show some of the stuff happening. This chapter was fine since it showed a number of things that haven't been focused on and that needed focus (Tonatta, citizens, coliseum group working together, the officers). The main problem that some people seem to have is the lack of focus on a number of characters. Some like that we get the quirks of each character and see how they fight, while others want/need more details about each character. Both opinions are equally valid, but the problem for the second group is where we are at in this arc. We are getting ready for the fights and if we were to go into more detail about each fighter, the chapter would be padded out even more. Those of us that like how they have been presented like this chapter, while others who want more information about the characters are not going to like it.
Overall I, as well as others, like this arc, but the pacing has been all over the place, sometimes with things happening to fast, or as with the last bunch of chapters, things going slow. While I like Doflamingo, he seems to be lacking a little bit in being menacing. He's shown that he is strong, and he can plan certain things, but there that certain quality that has been missing from certain big villains from the past. The other problem is that some characters have gotten a decent spotlight, while other characters haven't had time to shine. This can still be fixed for most of the characters, but this far into the arc some of them should have more to them already (officers, revolutionaries, Fujitora, Kinimon). At the end of the day, it's going to come down what people want from the arc. I want to see what the impact of this arc will be, and with all these characters, as well as everything Doflamingo is behind, this is going to have a huge impact on the world.
-
I would say that my strategy might be useful. I read (sigh) Naruto and Bleach first, and they're often so bad that OP is always outstanding by comparison! It has never disappointed me! I know people want some delivery on the many plot lines going all simultaneously, they want to know DD's past, they want to know Law's past, they want to know who is Manshere, they want to know about Kanjuro, and of course they want to see DD's ass kicked. But, as the wise man once pointed out, the author is not your bitch. 'Nuff said

From the forums, it seems that most of us do that, especially since they come out before One Piece. It does make One Piece look better, but it won't stop me or others from complaining if there is something we don't like about the chapter. Heck, Toriko was good, especially when compared to Naruto this week, but it didn't stop me from talking about my dissatisfaction of some of this chapter. I was ready to complain about this One Piece chapter until I finished and saw it touched on other points that hadn't been touched on for a while. And while the author doesn't have to do what we want, it can still be disheartening when something doesn't go our way, or worse, the author is making huge mistakes.
-
I hate dellinger so much its unreal.
