So most reviews rate the game as either being average to great, with the general consensus being "great". Anyone here played it yet? Despite my initial reactions, I just might download it since I've got hardly anything to do for the next few days.
-
From the let's plays I've seen, they all seem to finish the main story in an hour, and that's including cutscenes and everything. Of course, it does look great, but I might hold out for a bundle of some sort in the future after TPP is released. On the other hand, I don't really have much to do this week.
On the other other hand… I could go buy Dark Souls for the same price or I could play the FFX remasters...

I can't help but feel that they'll inevitably bundle Ground Zeroes with Phantom Pain, too…

They probably and most likely will, i think i even recall kojima saying he wanted as much at the end of the day.
I have the current gen ps3 version, and i finished the story part pretty quick. I kinda feel like i just happened upon the right path though lol, but it wasnt easy. Its cool though, you are given a lot of options, and the AI can see you far better than ever before. There were times i had to climb onto a roof just to avoid them since they were pretty good at scouting the area, i couldnt even remain hidden in the tall grass if a spotlight hit me. The marking of enemies makes things more manageable, but unless you can get a clear view of them you wont get their location so its still very possible to think an area is clear when its not. Ammo is limited as well, i had to interrogate soldiers just to find out where hidden ammo depot spots were at. Although this is all just the main mission, i havent really dipped into the others or explored as much as possible, i know the other missions take place in different times of day or whether so that changes things up. I feel the ps3 version is ok, but the next gen one is probably where it really shines, 30fps is a bit noticeable in the version ive got but its still good enough for now.
-
It's interesting that you mention it gives a lot of options.
I felt the same with part 4. The game gave snake a LOT of tools to use while still on a linear path. So i'm very excited for MGSV since they'll be adding the open world element. I always felt that part 4 had an AMAZING gameplay system that always felt underutilized for just ONE small game and one you can beat in under 5 hours. I wanted to see this in other games.
As for Ground Zeroes. I'm gonna put the jury out until i've beat it. I don't like the idea of a glorified demo, but, to me, experimentation and options have always been why I love the MGS games.
I picked up the ps4 copy today used (I saw someone trading it in. So I decided nows a good time as any). I'm currently enamored with Dark Souls 2, but i'll give this a go soon.
-
The only review you'll ever need to watch.
-
I finished MGS4 after just 3 days, so I'll be sure to make the most of this one. I am still wondering if the statements about it being as shorts as it is are true, because I'm seeing it all over the place, it still feels like something of an exaggeration. And I must say…even for a downscaled game (I have it on PS3), it looks absolutely incredible. Maybe the best looking PS3 game I've ever seen. Aside from some slightly animation on Snake, I'm barely noticing any difference between the last and next gen versions.
-
I really enjoyed Ground Zeroes from a gameplay perspective - while I haven't played MGS4, the gameplay is a huge improvement over MGS2 and 3. As well, the side missions allow for a much greater amount of diversity compared to the standard Metal Gear experience.
My main concern is the story. While this might not be the case in the Phantom Pain, I felt like a lot of the quirky humour that's usually found in the Metal Gear series (Psycho Mantis reading your memory card, the ridiculous nature of Dead Cell and the Cobra Unit, the various Codec Call easter eggs, hiding in a box being the ultimate disguise) was absent from this game outside of the Raiden bonus mission (and the end of the mission where you rescue the spy while you're in a helicopter). While this could be chalked up to how short this game is, as well as MGSV being about Big Boss' transition to a villain, it's something that really stuck out to me when I was playing the game.
-
During the Deja Vu mission outside the the prison camp where Chico is held, if you approach one of the two blue outside toilets you'll hear a familiar sound. I lol'ed. I'm glad Kojima is still keeping those small but awesome things in his games. I replay the games for them.
My total game time is listed at over 6 hours, but that does not count the number of times I've just went out of a mission entirely. Not sure if it counts "restart mission." I've just been addicted to trying to get a S rank. But even with that bullet stop thingy it's still so darn hard. You get careless after a while.
I will say that I liked the game much more later than when I started. Took a while to adjust to the controls and overall to how I should play the game and the rhythm. Now I absolutely love it. The whole "completed in 10 minutes" doesn't matter to me. Didn't play MGS4 that way. Neither did I play this game that way. I always try for stealth. If you want to just run through it then go ahead. I see no fun in it.
The game seems to award me guns based on my rank. I do hope that plays a larger role in Phantom Pain, to encourage sneaking and perfection.
When Kojima says that Phantom Pain will be 200 times bigger I wonder if he includes the side missions in that, or does he mean sheer size of the maps and locations in total. While as a massive MGS fan I would play the extra ops, I don't consider it a requirement for the game to have, and will choose the next mission, the next location over playing the same map again in a different manner. That's end-game stuff.
-
^Im sure there will be a ton more weapons and also what we can do in a wider space like phantom pain is offering. And i dont even know if the cqc ability to disarm an enemy was in this one, can anyone confirm if they could do it like it was shown in the PP trailer?

Yeah it definitely had a different tone altogether, im hoping they let up a bit in PP but who knows. I hope we at least get some codecs or long tapes in that version so we can hear the characters interact. But i definitely agree it needs some more of its trademark zannyness, or at least just some levity to break things up a bit and keep it from going too far in one direction, because if it does it might feel really disjointed from past games and id rather have it feel like it could fit in nicely.
-
A cool video about the medic in ground zeroes and ishmael in phantom pain.
There has to be something significant with his character considering that they have kiefer voicing him, because I'm sure he gets some good money for the voice work. But why would they both have the same voice? A theory is going around that he is possibly only an imagination of big boss that is helping him throughout the game. Maybe the medic really died in the paz explosion, and after those events and the 9 year coma, snake imagines him just like he will with some of the enemies from his past.
-
I'm just gonna leave these here:
-
Those map size comparisons never impress me with open-world games, cause at the end of the day it's AT LEAST 50% dead-space and if anything gets in the way of the narrative as you're forced to treck through it from objective to objective. MGSV has given me zero reason to believe it'll be any different in this design.
-
Some screens from the new trailer:
HURRY UP, E3!
-
Hopefully, the return of the cardboard box is a good sign - Ground Zeroes took itself way too seriously for my tastes, and I'm hoping this means the series' sense of humour will make a return in The Phantom Pain, even though it's still dealing with serious subject matter.
-
Those screens already have me pumped, as well as the map and that gameplay vid

I agree, and i definitely hope there are more off the wall aspects that weve come to love from the series. Hopefully some more codecs, or at least tapes to a greater extent then we saw in 4 or peace walker. Im hoping they took enough feedback from ground zeroes to take that into consideration since we are still a ways off from release, and making it have a bit more of the older charm would still be a possibility at this stage.
-
I'm just happy the ultra-ridiculous Fulton Recovery System is coming back. It was one of my favorite mechanics in Peace Walker! Also, Snake popping out of the box like a stripper tickles me pink.
-
Trailer for Phantom Pain leaked
This is on someone who caught it's account, the original video was put to private. Don't know how long it'll stay up.
Edit: Welp, video was made private. Should be at Microsoft's even in any case.
-
Managed to catch it.
Looks good of course. Not really much to add…
...if you've seen it. The end of course put a smile on my face.
-
You can also download the video of the trailer here (for the time being, anyway).
Trailer looks sweet. The Mike Oldfield song was alright.
-
Heres the full uncut trailer, definitely love that song (infact the music in every trailer has been good)
-
I preferred the trailer from last E3, cus it showed gameplay and had an awesome original song playing in the background. This one just had a bunch of stuff happening that said very little. Without proper context it's just a bunch of people torturing and fighting one another. Though I guess limiting stuff is Kojima's plan. Don't think he will reveal much.
-
hers a timeline from the conference, and since we see the word venom in the trailer, does that mean hes now venom snake rather then punished like the last trailer stated?
-

I was pleasantly surprised and happy with the amount of tapes we had in Peace Walker. While it ain't no codec, it still had that dialogue to it that MGS4's codec severely lacked, and it's a PS4 game.
Seriously though, MGS4 had only 2 people to choose from. And one never shut up about lowering your psyche gauge. Even more annoying was that she said "I've already told you methods on how to lower your psyche," when in fact, she never did, since the convos were cycled randomly.
But I agree with everything else, MGS should retain the level of quirkiness it always had.
I haven't played Ground Zeroes and I should probably just shut up until I do, but I'm assuming we're finally seeing the downfall of Big Boss and how he went crazy, seeing some of the things he does here, so I can see why they'd take it out as not to detract from the severity of it. I don't think it would take away from the seriousness anymore than the other games, 3 was still pretty serious and it had it's humor intact.

They streamed the 30 minute closed e3 demo, and you can find all of that footage here at [gamespot
](http://www.gamespot.com/videos/e3-2014-metal-gear-solid-v-the-phantom-pain-gamepl/2300-6419818/) (and maybe we should just rename the thread MGS5, and merge it with the other or something if a mod can make that possible) -

I have to make mention; That facial mo-cap is fucking incredible.
-
I renamed the thread as suggested. As for merging… I'm not sure if I can do that.
Well, this thread is active. So yup!
Alright, I merged them... which i've never actually done before. Sooooo sorry if I fucked anything up.
-
Aw darn you fucked things up, now the world's gonna explode and the Vogons are coming and humanity's gonna die and MGS5 got canceled. Noooooo.

What the hell is a Vogan?

What the hell is a Vogan?
It's from a British scifi comedy series.

Well I said I was sorry.

Now that I have fully leaped into current-gen this is probably one of my most anticipated titles alongside Uncharted 4. I still haven't played Ground Zeroes, my motivation just sank after finding out it's an hour long and it is literally a single mission of which I've already seen the ending cutscenes to.

Better to wait for Phantom Pain .

Thanks brother, ill update the first post soon to reflect the change too

Id say if anything, just wait till TPP comes out, kojima has already expressed that he wanted both to be together as a release, and we know damn well konami wouldnt pass up the chance to put them together in some way, im holding out for a possible ps4 bundle along with that.

PS4 bundle with MGS Phantom Pain and maybe Ground zeroes = instant buy .
-
If the two games come bundled with the PS4, I might just buy it.
The MGS series is what prompted me to buy a PS3 and a PSP in the first place, anyways.4 for PS3, and Portable Ops for PSP.
-
I just couldn't get into Portable Ops, the limited buttons on the PSP made the already fairly awkward MGS control scheme even moreso. I still never got around to Peace Walker, largely because I know the game is balanced around co-op and I never had people to play with.

Why not watch the movies of these games ? That's what i did to experience the story but if you only want to experience the game then it's a different story .
-
You don't need to have someone to play with. I beat most of the missions myself (I think), though I did play with korobka on a few missions. It's fun but not really necessary except it makes some of the harder bosses not take forever to kill. Buy the HD collection though and play the HD version of the game as it does play better with a controller than with the PSP's button layout. It also runs higher than 20 fps.

You mean MGS legacy collection , right?
-
The only difference between Legacy and HD is that Legacy (on top of having the HD collection within it) has a download for MGS1 and a disc with MGS4. He could buy the Legacy collection but it would probably be cheaper to get the HD collection if he just wants to play Peacewalker. You might actually be able to separately buy Peacewalker HD on the PSN store. Though yeah the Legacy collection is great but it's essentially the HD collection plus MGS1 and MGS4.

I always thought HD collection only had MGS 2 and MGS 3 but didn't know it had the both original Metal Gear plus peace walker . So yeah getting the HD collection might be cheaper .

That's the Vita version. The PS3 and 360 versions come with Peace Walker HD. I actually had the HD collection, but when my friend gave up on playing co-op I traded it in.
-
Doesn't Legacy also have the original MSX Metal Gear games as well?
Portable Ops is probably my least favorite MGS, but personally, I wouldn't call it a terrible game, I just expected more. It was essentially a MGS themed pokemon game, but with a short variety of soldiers.
I loved Peace Walker. Peace Walker improves on every level of Portable Ops, plus there's a great joy in seeing Mother Base grow. The only thing I didn't like was how difficult some of the bosses were, but they were only frustrating when I was trying to get an S rating. Easily fixed by coming back later with better items and equipment.
-
The MSX games are included in MGS3, and so come with the HD version. I still need to play MG2.
-
A new gameplay video was released today…snake in a box
I never thought it would have that much versatility, or that they would go that far.
-
That's kojima for you, going all out even for the dumb things. Love it.^^ Not even 2 hours left till the mgs stream from gamescom tonight.
Update: Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain confirmed for Steam.^^
