Well, yeah, they had to come up with reasons why he couldn't be there or else they would have no conflict in the plot since he'd just stun all the things like he often does. :P He was like the Firey Phoenix in Gatchaman…"crap, it's broken, we can't resort to our Deus ex Machina!"

You show me these episodes where he's not an insult to mass. I'd love to see them.
-
I never said he wasn't. Rather the opposite, actually. I just said he wasn't useless.
-
Rather the opposite, actually. I just said he wasn't useless.
You're sending me mixed signals.
-
Am I? I said that he's a dues ex machina that disables enemies far too easily, and therefore they have to put him out of commission so he can't always be the answer. Which means getting blown up, running low on power, etc.. He's a gimmick, but he's entertaining and cute. There's certainly nothing high brow about him, but that can be said for a lot of DW; I like it anyway.
What's the mixed signal?

@Mr.:

I never said he wasn't. Rather the opposite, actually.
So he IS an insult to mass?
@CosmicDebris:K-9 was almost TOO useful
….......
-
Oh, I get it…you mean he's an insult to mass as a physical property. I read it as "an insult to the mass" as in his existence is an insult the the viewers. Nah, that's easy, I could probably find quite a few episodes where he knocks a good number of enemies out of commission. Of course, he sacrificed his own life in "School Reunion".

I actually just saw School Reunion just before you posted this. Okay, K-9 had some moments to shine here - but I'm offput that the little robot dog that kept getting his head smashed off can now fend off an encampment of aliens.
-
K9's superior sarcasm gelled really well with Tom Baker. Especially when Romana I was there as well.
It was kinda like payback for all the smugness of the Pertwee era
-
@Mr.:

Yeah, it might seem like an odd jump of logic, but after so much truncated texting shorthand and typos I've had to read lately, my brain just wants to translate stuff that way sometimes.

I'm pretty sure he only lost his head once.
Guess you won't be wanting to watch this, though.

No one.

Being a kids show doesn't excuse awfulness, which to my understanding, the K9 show was nothing but.
-
Yeah…Sarah Jane Adventures was aimed at kids, but it was actually good.
The K-9 series actually caused licensing issues for him to appear in DW and SJA.

Nah. I've done a good job not being a mentally unhinged pyromanical killer up until now, and I'd prefer to keep it that way.

Ach, it's not so bad once you get used to it.
…kind of.

Also, the Doctors' real names are epic.
Troughton stands out for his awesomeness, Colin Baker stands out for his mundane full name.
-
Troughton was indeed awesome.
Speaking of, Enemy of the World was just released on DVD (in the states). So being that I am not one for purchasing things digitally, this was the first time I got to watch the serial. When I went through the series when I first got in to the show a few years ago, for the missing episodes there was audio with surviving production still, surviving clips, and description text on the bottom to recreate the episode (kinda like a slideshow with audio and the occasional clip). Enemy of the World stood out for me throughout the entire show and was easily one of my top 3 (along with the Celestial Toymaker which I do hope is found one day as well!). It was such a joy to be able to watch it. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it!
-
Oh yeah, coincidentally, I just finished Enemy of the World last night too. That actually might be why I voted for Patrick Troughton, lol. I agree, it's an excellent story and a terrific showcase of the second doctor. And Jamie, too. Very likely in my top 5. Usually in a 6+ part story there's some padding where it gets a little dull, but not in that one.
Edit: I just went to look at where that i09 ranked lists puts that one, and it's almost at the bottom. Ridiculous. Sometimes I think that list should die in a fire. I agree with the top 2 only.

The video shows nothing, but at least there is confirmation that it's August…now, WHICH day in August....

OMG, that's hilarious!!
Tom clearly having a bad day, haha

I'd have a bad day too when K-9 doesn't fucking know the answer.
-
Wow. Time really flew by real quick. So its back in August. Goody. I'm looking forward to it.
-
Aren't we all! It was a longer than usual wait, I guess. This will be the first season that's come out where I've been caught up. I got to season 7 right after the Christmas special aired.
But anyway, we'll all be killed shortly if we don't switch over to sexual air supply.
OH, btw…in case anyone hasn't seen this, there's a Humble Bundle Doctor Who comics special going on. https://www.humblebundle.com/books You can pay what you want and get 80 issues or pay more and get more stuff, and put however much of the cost you want into charity, it's a pretty good deal if you ever wanted to check them out.
-
Hey BBC, THIS is how you do a teaser trailer.
Totally fan-made.
-
Wow, that's f'in awesome.
-
much better. BBC take notes.
-
The effects on the faces was a bit wonky, but that's understandable. The mood and atmosphere was perfect. Just seeing the silhouette of the Doctor for a second doesn't qualify as a teaser.

Haha…does anyone even drink Evian anymore? I haven't seen it in stores in a while.
Looks like Classic Doctor Who is coming to "The Retro Channel". I don't know who carries that station, but nice to see the classics getting more airplay lately. They also showed a limited run on The Horror Channel. [http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2014/05/classic-doctor-who-comes-to-retro-tv.html?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed

I thought The Fifth was strictly a pacifist. Why'd he shoot a cyberman to death?

The doctor is ideally a pacifist, but every incarnation does something violent at some point, because he's not perfect. He nearly goes a step further in Resurrection of the Daleks.

H I don't know who carries that station
Here's a list of them. Either there aren't all that many affiliates or this is incomplete.

Rachel Talalay is going to be directing the two-part finale. She was the directer of Tank Girl. Regardless of what the plot of the movie was, I always liked the direction, very fun and zany. Should be interesting to see how these episodes turn out. http://bitchmagazine.org/post/the-director-of-tank-girl-is-now-behind-the-scenes-the-new-doctor-who
The article seems to confirm that there will be 12 episodes + a Christmas episode.Interesting comment about women and special effects, too.
Side note, she is not the first women director for DW, they've had quite a few going back to the classic series (though not many in comparison). But I have noticed in social media people seem to not realize that. Female writers seem shorter in supply, strangely. -
-
Saw it…quite a lot of work put into it, pretty awesome work visually, but I couldn't help but be bothered by the fact that whenever someone is singing solo, they're totally out of tune. :P

I just watched The Five Doctors.
Now, let me just say that, while I haven't seen much of him, (this is really only the second story of his I've watched, the first being Earthshock) Peter Davison is probably my least favorite Doctor. I haven't really felt he had the charisma, nor the humor, of his other selves. He's always struck me as being rather boring. That said… the ending to The Five Doctors is the first time I've ever really seen the Doctor in him. -
Anyone seen this before? Clara and the TARDIS?
and this - how the Doctor erased all information about himself from the Universe:
-
Yea, they were on the season 7 set. I love the Inforarium one personally. I always enjoyed it when the darker side of the 11th Doctor leaked through. I will miss Matt Smith's Doctor (Probably my third favorite Doctor of all of them), but I am still very excited to see Peter Capaldi's take.

That said… the ending to The Five Doctors is the first time I've ever really seen the Doctor in him.I felt this way during his first season as well, you can even go back and see my initial reaction earlier in this thread…but by the time I was done watching everything, he became one of my favorite doctors. I think you'll find most of his third season a lot better for his character, though. I've also had the opportunity to hear him in the Big Finish audios where they do a good job of bringing out the best in all the characters. Be sure to watch Enlightenment as well, one of my favorite DW stories.
I think I said this before, but a lot of the reasons why he comes off a bit bland is because John-Nathan Turner was behind his shoulder going "no, too much humor, no, don't do that, that's too hammy, No, reminds me of Baker", plus some really crappy script editing by Eric Saward. Which is a shame, if you watch outtakes or anything else he does, he's an incredibly funny and charming person.
On another note, there is something really odd going on with the missing episode situation. I've got novels worth of statements and rumors from the last 5 years, but it's particularly strange that suddenly after The Underworld Menace was already put up on Amazon for pre-order and even had a trailer released for it, suddenly when asked whether it's going to have animation or telesnaps, Steve Roberts says "[Well],we're the team that remasters the episodes for DVD release and even we don't have a clue what's going on with TUM now. From where we're standing, it's looking like the range is dead.". I know there were some issues with the animation company putting things off for other projects, but it sounds to me like there's something else going on. What a lot of people hope is that they actually found the missing episodes that were going to be animated, and perhaps someone new is going to be handling the restoration of classic episodes, but who knows?

If earth was dying and humans had no other choice but to go out and conquer another planet, do you think the Doctor would show up and side against humans?
I don't think so and that's what I've always not liked about the Doctor. Yes humans are his favorite species but does that mean he has to wipe out or destroy or kill another species that's trying to survive, by say not starving to death even if it means eating someone's time(weeping angels).
I mean what crime do those weeping angels actually commit to be sentenced to what I assume is an eternity of starvation. I don't fully remember Blink's plot but I think those angels were somehow stuck on earth and were really weak/hungry.
I want the new season to deal with this. Show us the Doctor helping out other races, that not all aliens are big bad monsters that want to destroy humans and that sometimes humans are monsters too. The Tenth Doctor liked to talk about how humans would spread across the universe, which is a good thing except when other species do it, they become evil creatures that might ne erased from time and space.
-
If earth was dying and humans had no other choice but to go out and conquer another planet, do you think the Doctor would show up and side against humans?
He has disagreed with humans in the past, generally he tries to convince any species to find another solution other than violence and conquest. Have you seen The Mutants? He actually does side with the native species. He does not allow the humans to go with their plans to commit genocide and colonize their planet, sabotages their equipment, allows the natives to kill the tyrant human that was in charge, gets the whole operation shut down, basically. I want to say there are other examples, but that's the one that comes to mind.

What good do the Weeping Angels do? They seem more like parasites than anything. They don't have a civilization, they don't help anyone else, they don't seem to support any kind of ecosystem. I mean, if cockroaches get stuck in my house they're just weak and hungry and want to live, but that doesn't mean I should just allow them to wreak havoc in MY house. They don't belong on earth, that's for sure. But most of all, they took away his friends.
-
Thanks for the mutant mention. I didn't know about that, its good to know they've dealt with such a situation although they went with evil tyrant wants to conquer? rather than humanity needing to conquer in order to survive.
As for the weeping angels. Come on they are sentient beings. We don't know whether they have a civilization or not(though my head canon says that the Time lords destroyed them since they can naturally manipulate time), all we know are that some of them work as assassins. As for supporting the time system, I don't see how nature can allow beings that naturally manipulate time to exist without there being a benefit to it.
From what you understand of the doctor if it was a clear Humans vs another equally innocent species(they're isn't any way for them to make a compromise) who do you think he'd choose? Would he even choose or just go back into his Tardis and go away.
-

It was a case where earth was suffering and they were trying to survive, however, this particular Marshal was corrupt, and after they had mined resources from the planet, which was inhabitable for humans, rather than simply leave he had his scientist find a way to make the atmosphere breathable for humans, but NOT breathable for the native species, which the Doctor would not allow.

You're right that we don't know a whole lot about them, and I prefer it stays that way…I think they're best left with mystery. I think they have showed them too much as it is. Being sentient itself isn't a reason to be OK with them, obviously the Daleks and Cybermen are sentient, but they're also hell-bent on destroying, enslaving or assimilating everything in existence. The angels don't seem to have an agenda, but they do strike me as somewhat evil. But regardless, it doesn't seem like the Doctor has any vendetta against them, they're always just accidentally running into them and are trying to escape. I can't think of any reason the Doctor would have in those situations to side with them.
From what you understand of the doctor if it was a clear Humans vs another equally innocent species(they're isn't any way for them to make a compromise) who do you think he'd choose? Would he even choose or just go back into his Tardis and go away.
I don't know if he's ever been faced with that challenge yet, and it would be interesting. He obviously does have a soft spot for earth and the human race, as it's been his second home for most of his life and where most of his best friends come from. I think sometimes you just go with the devil you know. The Doctor isn't perfect and does make selfish or irrational decisions, sometimes.
