So Kurokiba makes the director strip against his will while megumi would make him do it willingly….
Don't get me wrong, I like the director's strip but I feel like its losing its impact if he is going to do it with every single contestant.

I was thinking along the same lines. I can understand Souma and Alice, considering both's extreme talent, but yes will lose it's meaning quickly if this continues.
On the other hand I really enjoyed the punch to the face, and if he at least keeps taking off his clothes, it would need to stay creative nonetheless.
Are the guests planning on kidnapping Kurokiba?
Yes, scouting=kidnapping obv.
A great set-up chapter. The colorspread alone would've been enough to completely satisfy me, but what followed was an entertaining and interesting tasting of the dish. I like Kurokiba's style. Using 'brute force' to cook is a fascinating approach and something that fits his character very well. The art in general was once again awesome. Loved it.
Now to see what Megumi will serve. I really am cheering for her and want her to take the victory. Not because of some silly shounen clique, but because I genuinely care for her and want to see her succeed with her heartwarming style of cooking.
I still want Kurokiba to win.
An interesting outcome would be if instead of winning thanks to her heartwarming cooking like some of you predict, she loses because it's too gentle. Which would materialize by the director not stripping .
It would be bring her more room for improvement.
On the other hand, Kurokiba could learn from her cooking if he barely wins against her.

I… I'm on the fence about Megumi winning here.
On one hand, it does seem to be a little bit too early. There is still plenty of room for her to develop, and I don't really think she should join Souma up there at this point in time. Lack of real rivals is already more than apparent at this stage. We need some proper wins from the others as well, to keep things interesting. Just my opinion.
On the other, I really do like Megumi as a character, and I would like for her to win... even if that seems a bit rushed. I dunno. I don't know what I want.
Hmmm, this chapter didn't make a big deal of it's title, right? But it was very fitting.
Megumi vs Soma still seems like an awesome idea for a match.
But will Megumi win …
I've recently had scallops they were kind of expensive(50€/kg), we grilled them. They tasted kind of interesting. Slightly sweet and somewhat fish like, it wasn't a very strong taste. I think the texture when chewing them was the most interesting thing about it. I really have to wonder how something that mild can sustain a soup, seems like it would end up being something really subtle. Not sure though different type of scallops might vary in taste.
Again I kind of wish I knew more about food. I assume if Megumi does win it will be because her dish will be in perfect harmony with whatever Ryou made. Kind of like how apples go well with certain kind of cheeses.
Been looking up stuff from Kurokiba's dish.
The rusk he put into the ramen seems really odd
I don't think I've had it before but its just bread right? How does that go well in ramen?
Also the cheese. I get cheese in spagetti, but I just cant imagine it in ramen o_0
Well, in my country, Colombia, we use to put rusk in some soups and it's very tasty and traditional. The chapter reminded me of that.
Well, if Megumi wins now, I'm riding on the Megumi bandwagon til the end.
Well, in my country, Colombia, we use to put rusk in some soups and it's very tasty and traditional. The chapter reminded me of that.
Thats pretty interesting, what kind of soup was it? I like bread in clam chowder and stuff but have never had it with noodles or anything.
I still think Kurokiba is going to win
Despite him serving first which is an "almost guarantee" to lose in SnS? XD
Well, I think so too but mostly due how he was fullright ignored by the hall and the judges at the beginning of the chapter and his expression/movements right after it to get theri attention back to him. I guess there's some kind of story behind Ryou Kurokiba as to why he became what he is now. Given how we saw no parents at the pub/restaurant and how merciless and mean he was to his staff, I could guess that he had to get independent very early in his life and that he had experience many hardships to being lonely thus turning his loneliness into "strength" as in "I don't need anybody to be good/I can do things on my own".
I still want Kurokiba to win.

On the other hand, Kurokiba could learn from her cooking if he barely wins against her.
Losing because its too gentle? Never thought about that, but would that even be possible in this setting where "Megumi kind and skilled cooking trumps others competively and skilled cooking" like in the premilaries with that chinese girl?
ike I said I would like to see Kurokiba "win" but "feel" like he hasn't truly won. Either due him being very prideful thus wanting a total domination which he didn't got due one or couple of the judges saying they prefered Megumi's style over his or due him tasting Megumi's cooking and be moved by it similar to that one cocky cook which totally won against Megumi/Souma back then in the trainings camp but liked Megumi's cooking after all.
I… I'm on the fence about Megumi winning here.
On one hand, it does seem to be a little bit too early. There is still plenty of room for her to develop, and I don't really think she should join Souma up there at this point in time. I'm more on the fence due the "she's like Souma" at the end and the hype around her at the beginning of this chapter.
What I really like about it is that it shows her huge character developement as she "behaves" like Souma.
What really worries me about this is if it is meant as "she is exactly like Souma" which I would not want, neither in terms of crazy skillness nor character copy. If Megumi becomes exactly like Souma, she would no longer be the girl many people here admire and cheer for. And if Megumi already got the very same high skills like Souma then it would feel like undermining Souma's development as we have seen more Souma spendind time on his training/thinking of menus then we did with Megumi thus feeling Megumi got her skills more easily than Souma did.
That and I really don't want the whole best 8 fights become a circle of best friends competeting. I already didnt liked how almost half of the 8 were all in Souma's friend circle while with some others like Alice, Erina's aide and that curry guy you could argue that they are "friendly" or at least not hostile rivals. That kind of makes feel this "epic showdown of the best eight firstyears" feel like… I don't know, a picknick for fun? And it really shouldn't feel that way.
I know we're still only at the second battle but if Megumi wins here then it is already clear that the Aldini big bro gonna lose as the mangaka can't have 3/4 of the last fours be Souma and friends as then the tension would drop as there's no "bad blood" or "I NEED to win over this person" there as they would accept the others friends victory more easily then when losing to some stranger/person they don't like.
And I'd rather see the Aldini big bro win to not get into Yamcha territory as well as to show his little brother who had given his all and still lost in the premilaries that his big bro is not somebody that just gets taken out like that already in the first elimination round of the best 8.
I like Megumi's character, I really do, but I rather want to see more training and such of and with her before she starts winning against guys which we feel could even best Souma. Else it feels like those victories are "given" to her by the author just due her character and not due her skills. And in the end cooking is not only about "love" but also about "skills". Souma won against Alice because he had both and because Alice lacked in the "love" as in not clearly looking at the "theme" of her menu, but we could still tell that Alice is amazing in her style of cooking as both she and Souma had a similar idea with the "treasure box" yet went differently about it.
If Ryou loses now in his first real shown 1-1 prominent fight against Megumi, you can throw that character right into the trash box as the entire Alice team would be gone for good.
We have Souma/Megumi/Aldini as the Souma and co group, Erina's aide as representant of Erina, Alice/Ryou as their own "down with Erina" group with Alice already eliminated, Curry guy on his own crusade and new unknown guy as whatever he is. So taking out one of those groups so early would feel like a lackluster. Like they had or will never have any chance to be a real threat to either Souma nor Erina.
And that's boooooooooooooooooooooring~
At least for me that is.
I understand concerns to a certain extent that the possibility exists that if Megumi wins now that the whole character growth thing that made her so interesting might end prematurely if the author just drops the ball. But it would be good to keep in mind the character arc of a meek character doesn't have to end with gaining confidence and that, that process doesn't have to be drawn out to infinity just to keep that character interesting(quite the opposite when we look at Reborn).
It's all about the challenges and in what forms growth will be displayed. One of my favorite takes of that type of character is Sena from Eyeshield who kind of stops wimping out midway and yet he's still plenty of fun for the remainder of the series.
Character growth doesn't have just to be psychological it can also be just purely skill based. It's not without reason that training arcs can be really fun, there's something really cool about seeing someone learn something.
Our focus has mostly been on the first years, but we know that second years can choose seminars to specialize in so that's another fun opportunity to make interesting stuff happen to various characters.
Besides that if we take Megumi as an example for other character arcs that could happen with her, there's is the whole romance thing that is largely unexplored.
We could delve into her questioning her end goal. She always had her inn as a backup to fall back to, but her mother send her to Tootsuki to see the bigger cooking world and with her succeeding she might question if the inn would be enough for her, etc etc.
Theoretically there's plenty to explore, just by the sheer virtue that humans can be pretty complex and that these are all super young people. It all depends on the author.
I also have something to say regarding the notion of a loss making a character irrelevant but I have to go now.
Thats pretty interesting, what kind of soup was it? I like bread in clam chowder and stuff but have never had it with noodles or anything.
The most popular is egg and milk soup for breakfast, It's called "Changua"
It's simple but very tasty, and to me, it reminds me of my dad's family. Here the recipe. It doesn't said there, but it can be cooked with two kinds of bread, 'calao' and 'almohabana', one soft and the other is the rusk kind of bread. Also you can add cheese. mmmm … I'm hungry now.
This might be better pic of the version I like.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
When the rusk doesn't lose all its consistency, it takes the flavour of the soup inside of it and it offers a tasty bite. It's about textures but also about flavour. It would be one of Kurokiba's little gifts in his dish.

2 pics.
Holy shit I did not expect that, how glorious.
! Ryou is shouting: Shrimp Shrimp Shrimp(Ebi ebi ebi ebi ebi) while attacking.
Megumi does the same with: Scallop Scallop Scallop(hota hota hota) in true JoJo fashion.
Well seeing that's how they duke it out I hope I can be happy that we can lay Megumi going for something gentle to rest. Like Fumio said gurl got gutsy!!
! The stands have the names of the dishes. Ryou's is that poisson thing. Megumi's is Hotate and Paitan in short H&P.Fabulous.

Soma wins. That is amazing
Oh man, so much win in those two pages. Really brilliant.
Too fabulous for my body.
Shokugeki no Soma is a 「cooking」 manga.

Oh yes, we need this.

Shokugeki no Soma is a 「cooking」 manga.
You sir or madam, have won the internet.
We have a beatiful new title! Yay!
Those are the best panels this series has ever produced.
Chinese scans are out
http://www.mangabird.com/shokugeki-no-soma-71
Think there's a page or two missing though, right?
! I thought Megumi was gonna win, but I noticed the Old Man didn't strip for her dish this chapter… Or make any comments on her dish really. Then again I think there might be another page missing.
! It this is A really cool way to go out if this it for Megumi. Or maybe I'm still wrong.
Compared it with the chinese scans on baidu(19 pages) and I don't see a page missing. I think the page counter on mangabird is just bugged.
! With Megumi making her "stand":ninja: like that it really feels like she'll lose. I wanted so see that side of her in a match against Soma but oh well if it's already happening against Ryou I guess I'm fine if she loses. I just hope that the explanation for which ramen is better will make sense. The pictures make it seem like they're evenly matched up and there's no "one of them missed the theme" happening here. So it has to be a pretty good explanation.
! I put my money on that Megumi will win. But talking about the plot, there is an interesting reason for the author to make Kurokiba win. We know Eizan has a minion there from who we barely know something. And Eizan minion should have to play a mayor role in the future against Soma. So maybe Kurokiba, and specially his violent personality, will serve the purpose to show that Eizan minion is even much more violent and scary that Kurokiba. That could be shown by a future match between them.
Actually I kinda hope Italian Yamacha takes out Eizan's guy. Everyone seems to keep forgetting about him yet he is still a really talented cook.

Given how Megumi got hyped in this battle he might be just talented enough to wash the vegetables for her. XDDD

I kinda disagree. He tied with Soma before and scored higher than Megumi in the preliminaries. He isn't a complete pushover.

The manga has reached a new high
There's definitely a page missing. The one with Megumi summoning her "stand" isn't available on mangabird.
My bets are on Megumi winning, actually. She's not going to be knocked out by some shrimp.
The problem is that guy isn't a shrimp at all, but someone who's above Alice.
Hey, he's the one who brought shrimp to the table. I have to credit him for his originality, but considering how Yukihira won his round, Meg has a good chance.
I kinda disagree. He tied with Soma before and scored higher than Megumi in the preliminaries. He isn't a complete pushover.
I was just joking.^^
Though given how many commenters are already sure that Megumi will beat Ryou easily it does give off the vibe that italian Yamcha can't even hold some water to Megumi without failure. :P
While I liked Souma's win over Alice as we clearly saw a big difference between their dishes and could ourselves get behind the arguing of how Alice didn't understood the menu as much as Souma did, we have no such thing here with Megumi and Alice. Their dishes look pretty much the same, just taste differently and so far we only saw gramps stripping to Ryou's food but none so far on Megumi's side, yet given how the chapter shows Megumi standing up to Ryou in an "ebi-ebi-ebi" fight it seems next chapter will declare and explain her victory.
I still would have prefered Ryou to win as that would show that he IS indeed better than Alice as he claims plus given how he got the same points as Souma, it kind of etablished him as an "evil Souma" in the premilaries, so him getting taken out so early kind of makes him ridiculous and feels like a waste of a possible rival character.
The main problem I have with Megumi being defeated here is that she's already come a long way from her previous matches. Certainly, it wouldn't get to her if she loses this one too, but we've already seen her in plenty of cases where she's fumbled and tossed out by the sidelines. I wouldn't want this tournament to become so predictable as Yukihira vs Kurokiba in the final rounds.
Scores from previous rounds mean nothing in a one-on-one battle. What matters at hand in this match is how well these bowls of ramen are suited to being named as ramen.
Incidentally, Megumi's soup is designed after kodzuyu, a local specialty from Fukushima whose dashi is usually a soy-sauce-like consistency, despite looking rather clear. In fact, she uses two different kinds of soy sauce in this dish: "clear" and white soy. The dashi is also flavored with dried herbs, such as burdock, shitake mushroom, string bean, etc. The chicken flavor comes in with the sauce condiment on the side, which was chicken rib meat, green onion, shiso, and dried plums.

Considering this chapter didn't give a clear sign that one as better then the other. I am going to say that they draw, which will lead the girl getting a rival from the guy.
Amazing. Those last couple pages made my day lol.
Considering this chapter didn't give a clear sign that one as better then the other. I am going to say that they draw, which will lead the girl getting a rival from the guy.
Uneven number of judges makes a draw impossible unless I'm not understanding how the winner is decided here.
The director didn't strip after eating Megumi's ramen…or at least it didn't show him stripping because his reaction was not included in the chapter. If he did strip then there would have been a huge reaction from the crowd. In the last match Soma went second and the director was still shirtless when he pulled out the brush and started writing the name.
!
In this chapter he still has his robe on when writing the name of the winner.
!
Obviously the director is not the only judge but his reaction carries a lot of weight. Either way, I think this is a loss for Megumi.
Only in Soma could male nudity be a plot point.
Cool that Megumi took some tips off Soma's dad and managed to pull most of the flavor with mostly vegies.
Interesting to see megumi's "hopping hare" mode come out too. Reminds me of that 'inner sakura' but actually playing out nicely.
Just read it nice throwback to the dried vegetables.
Seriously again at this point I'd be fine with Megumi losing, the way she chose to fight this that's pretty much among the lines of what I had hoped seeing from her even if she advanced. That said right now I still prefer her to win. I just don't have any investment in Ryou yet. The flashback displayed him from an angle that I thought was somewhat boring. He still needs more chapters to be an interesting character.
Also I wasn't the biggest fan of how cheaply the author chose to hype him up. "Oh suddenly he's better than Alice!" right before the match.
It's going to be interesting how Soma's characters will be treated, are we going to get introduced to new characters constantly dropping old ones or are we at a point now where we know all the major first year people so the author can develop them more later.
Stand battle stuff is still fucking glorious even after the spoilers have had time to sink in. I love this manga

Also Megumi being the best girl is clearer then ever now
How her cooking is related to her mood? She had her dish planned before meeting Ryou, but she got a different mood than usual due to Ryou's comment on her mate's cook. That set up is good sign for Megumi to win; because what she always has lacked in has been more confidence than knowledge about cooking.
best stand designs I've seen since Stone Ocean.
i am for Megumi X Ryou..opposite attracts…
Megumi lost the moment she decided to stand and fight. But it's a big step in her character development. She's not a timid person when she has confidence, e.g. ping pong, so to see her become more combative is a sign she's gaining confidence. Her defeat was handled nicely. (I might be a bit premature but there was no stripping this chapter.)
If she won it'd be like beating Soma… she's just not good enough (yet). I'd be really disappointed if that happened.
