Yep, especially since cap 2 is a much better movie. Godzilla is just okay.
Oh no, there goes Tokyo. It's a Godzilla thread!
-
-
Ehh… I liked Cap 2, but I think I liked Godzilla more.
I think I'm just "Marvel'd Out" by now...... there's too many movies. >_>
-
Oh I'm super heroed out as well, especially since iron man 3, tasm 2 and thor 2 were only mediocore at best. But i think cap 2 was really well done and definitely the best out of all the marvel movies outside the avengers so far.
-
Biggest opening?! Hooray :)
-
This was pretty lame. There was WAY too much American military shit in it. It felt like a Michael Bay movie. Taylor-Johnson's character had no personality and could nos support the movie. Olsen's character was superfluous. Godzilla was cool, but he was only in it for 20 minutes. I loved the shit out of Pacific Rim and I thought this was much worse.
-
^
Agree on everything you said about the new godzilla movie, it just was okay and that is it. Really unfortunate, since they could have done so much more with it. At least the early reviews for the new x-men movie are really positive, so I can look forward to that this month. ^^ -
You have my respect, sir.
One line review for each instalment after viewing, pretty please?Well ive finally finished my godzillathon, so ask and ye shall receive
[hide]
1.Gojira- A timeless classic that holds up well, and despite the crude effects for the time, it still has a haunting tone and message that speaks volumes.2.Godzilla Raids Again - Godzilla's return and the appearance of his first enemy make for different feel, but decent movie none the less.
3.King Kong vs Godzilla - The ultimate showdown, goofy but fun as hell, this one holds lots of nostalgia for me. The suits arent the best, but the humor and spectacle of it is just superb.
4.Godzilla vs Mothra - Definitely one of my favorites, especially godzilla's suit design. The human characters in this one are actually pretty good as well, especially the villains.
5.Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster - A landmark entry and first appearance of godzilla's arch nemesis, it has some great battles, but it wasnt quite as good as i remembered.
6.Godzilla vs Monster Zero - My absolute favorite in the showa era, it has everything, sci fi, excellent battles, and nick adams all round out an excellent package.
7.Godzilla vs the Sea Monster - An ok entry, some of the past cast make for good terrorists, but overall this one has never really been one of my favorites. Kudos for the surfer music for ebirah in the US version haha. Stay away from the US international dub though, my god its bad.
8.Son of Godzilla - This is pretty much where godzilla jumped the shark lol, its still a good old time with a ton of monsters and fun though. As ugly as minya is hes kidna cute in this one.
9.Destroy all Monsters - The all out monster fest everyone could want, it has aliens, shuttle dog fights with rodan, and many cameos. The only part that it kinda loses points for is the fact that only a few monsters really do battle while the others dont (most of the costumes were falling apart at this point like baragon and varan)
10.Godzilla's Revenge - Probably the lowest point in the whole series, basically a best of godzilla to pad out time before the next movie. With a dash of lcd
11.Godzilla vs Hedorah - One of the stranger ones, this pits godzilla against another of mans folly's with a creature bred from our own pollution. This one is a bit trippy as well, though the smog monster itself is pretty cool and provides some interesting stuff throughout.
12.Godzilla vs Gigan - Back to business this is one of the more serious ones in the showa era. Gigan and ghidorah are excellent as is the setting, it doesnt get any better then alien roaches.
13.Godzilla vs Megalon - Besides godzilla's revenge this would be another crack in the big g's armor. There are good fights, megalon and Jet Jaguar are pretty cool, but its by far the most goofy in tone and presentation, godzilla was now full blown earth defender for a younger audience.
14.Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla - This one rights what the last did wrong, and mechagodzilla is just awesome. The omens for the worlds end are a nice touch, and i think its safe to say this is the bloodiest godzilla movie ever.
15.Terror of Mechagodzilla - Picking up where the last left off, another monster is added to the mix which is titanosaurus. Ive always enjoyed this one, the apes make for a good threat, and dr mifune's mad scientist story is enjoyable as well.
16.Return of Godzilla/1985 - My absolute favorite godzilla movie ever, its a return to form and in a big way. Its easily the darkest movie, and i love how they treat godzilla like an actual threat along with the cold war friction that is ever present with the threat of a nuclear strike on godzilla. His roar, design, and movement are just superb in this.
17.Godzilla vs Biollante - Another one of my favorites this one never got the amount of love i feel it deserves. Its an interesting take on how godzilla might be used as a weapon himself, or in this case his cells which are used to create a monster unlike any the series has ever seen before. And to top it off, a fan wrote it
18.Godzilla vs King Ghidorah - Time travel, and godzilla's origins are finally a thing in this series thanks to this movie. It has some cheesy moments with a cyborg, and bad american actors in ww2. But the moment godzilla and ghidorah face off, its easily one of the best battles they have had, if not the best.
19.Godzilla vs Mothra/battle for earth - Battra is introduced and is a pretty cool looking foe, but other than that its a newer take on the original from the showa era. It doesnt stand out that much for me.
20.Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 - Mecha G is back again, and now is a much sleeker weapon to defend and defeat godzilla. Rodan makes a cameo and overall its a good one, g-force is a nice new twist on the fight against godzilla.
21.Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla - Probably my favorite in the later heisei era. It has a fantastic soundtrack, and space godzilla is a menacing foe. Mogera lacks personality, but his crew pretty much makes up for it.
22.Godzilla vs Destroyah - All good things come to an end, and godzilla finally meets his in this one. The effects are great, and all the callbacks to the first movie are excellent. His imminent death at the hands of nuclear meltdown gives it tension, and the final scene is quite touching.
23.Godzilla 2000 - A return to form after the 98 trainwreck, japan had to respond. But i gotta say, this just isnt one of my favorites, orga and his abilities are cool. But there are so many strange effects, terrible CG, and bad looking scenes that it pretty much ruins it for me.
24.Godzilla vs Megaguirus - I feel this one is better then 2000, but it still has its share of issues. I like how they brought back the insects from the first rodan film, as well as the use of black hole tech to dispose of godzilla too.
25.GMK - Being directed by the man who gave life to the gamera trilogy at the time, id say this one is probably the best in the millennium series. Godzilla is no joke in this one, hes a damn brute and his facial features are well handled. Barragon returns with a cool battle, but i wasnt too impressed with mothra or ghidorah in this one, they just lacked compared to what came before.
26. Godzilla against Mechagodzilla - Once again the world tries to bring forth a bionic creature to put a stop to godzilla, although this time there is a nice twist in that they use the bones of the first godzilla to create it. This has got to be the best design for mecha G, hes far more agile as well.
27. Godzilla Tokyo SOS - A direct sequel to the previous one, this movie brings in mothra to plead with the people of earth to return the bones of godzilla to rest. A huge battle insues between all three monsters, as well as the mothra larvae at one point. As opposed to the last film this ones human portions focus on MG's mechanic and its a nice change, but it does intrude quite a bit on the battles at hand.
28.Godzilla Final Wars - You pretty much have to go into this one with the mindset that its not like any of the others, because it is all over the place. There are some parts i enjoy, and it is over the top with tons of monsters and super humans. But as a final farewell at the time i still cant enjoy this one as much as any of the others, it just pales in comparison.

Oh man. Many many thanks!!
Great reviews on all the films and you made me want to watch at least 6 films thanks to your effort.I actually own the poster for Destroy All Monsters and it hangs in my bedroom so I might watch that first.
Again, thank you so much and I hope you have a great time at the movies this weekend.
-
Well, the movie was good not great. It was exactly what I expected except more…American? I know it started out in Japan but really the thread should be renamed, 'Oh no, there goes San Francisco. It's a Godzilla thread.'
The cutaways to the human characters was annoying because they did it right in the middle of the long awaited fighting. Cutaways from one 'human moment' to the next would have been fine but don't cutaway from the freaking Godzilla fight! Also, hahaha as if they could've covered up Godzilla's existence and a giant animal pod pulsating out in the open in an "abandoned" site for that long.
Also, last thing which was more of a small annoyance. Why did they keep using binoculars to see giant creatures that were right in front of their faces?

On the topic of Adam Sandler movies. 3 words.
Reign Over Me.

I haven't seen the movie, but isn't lack of Godzilla screentime pretty much true to most Godzilla movies?
Hell, I think monster movies are typically like that. It even took near damn forever for dinosaurs to start doing stuff in Jurassic Park.
-
about 2/3 of the way through the movie my friend pointed out that all Ken Watanabe did all movie was look incredulous.
Its probably going to be a good summer for hollywood. they've got a great lineup though Xmen does come out next week so Godzilla will take a hit, but i would be surprised if it didn't pull in better opening numbers.

Godzilla's screentime wasn't really the problem. It's how his screentime was handled. It was constantly being interrupted by less interesting …characters and other times his scenes were just cut away from and never returned to.
! For instance he's battling one of these creatures in the middle of an airport with military, cameras, and civilians all around. The main human character is in peril hanging from a broken train holding on to a boy, and him and this boy are both about to plummet to their doom all while these gigantic monsters are fighting practically right next to them. The giant monster fight is on the news all over the world aaaaannnnd…cut to scene the next morning. Lots of destruction, monsters are gone, and main human character and boy are safe and ok. Nothing on how they got out of their situation or when/how the monsters stopped fighting. Sure, you could take.some guesses but why would you want to do that rather than show it?.

about 2/3 of the way through the movie my friend pointed out that all Ken Watanabe did all movie was look incredulous.
He was in constant shock and slow to respond to anyone who tried to engage him in conversation no matter how important. It's like he was the only one who couldn't believe this was happening and it was all his fault, lol. I'm.surprised people kept trying to talk to him with that faraway look in his eyes.
-
! It seemed pretty clear that the first portion was intended to be intro and setting for not just this movie, but the entire franchise. The second portion was intended to be monsters as seen from the viewpoints of people. The reason for the cuts and those odd angle shots of the monster is to give you the feeling that you're just as small watching the fight as the people in the movie. You're too small to take it all in. Granted now we're 2/3 of the way through the movie and that's a lot of screen time that's not been dedicated to the titular character so i can see why this rubbed some people the wrong way. I think it was too much screen time but I also think it was successful. Could things have been cut, yes. Did they take away from my experience as I was watching, no. The last portion is the monster fight we've all been waiting for, here, less of those far away odd angle shots of the monsters are used and they pull the camera back so you can see these guys go at it in full glory.
I think you guys are making way too big a deal about humans in the monster movie. I'm sorry but the movie you seem to want isn't really a movie. Godzilla is a giant fat lizard that moves slowly and breathes fire. He's not an action star. Most of the summer blockbusters are going to be pushing two hour run times. You can't watch that giant thing fight for two hours. He doesn't have that much variety when it comes to fighting. Really the two Mutos were an excellent idea because they require him to use different fighting tactics. If you want total camp of a guys in rubber suits fighting each other than that was dumb because Hollywood doesn't give people 100+ million dollar budgets to do that and we all saw what happened when you go too far with he tech and end up with a giant iguana that nobody liked. This is the balance between the two. Expect the sequel to have more monster because the intro portion won't be necessary but if you think they can fill 2 hours with that lizard you are crazy.
-
I demand to see Godzilla fighting for 2 hours an-
No wait, nobody's demanding that.
-
Not enough screentime for Godzilla. Too much screentime for humans.
One might think that people actually went and saw a Godzilla film from the complaints.
! I really don't get people complaining about the US military's role in this; sure, they're in there a lot, but pretty much every Godzilla film has the military involved. If anything, they come across worse than usual since the military in Godzilla films are usually just ineffective rather than outright incompetent like they were here. Pretty much the only thing they did correctly was fix a major mistake on their part and it still only worked out because of a fluke.
-
The best part of any Godzilla film is watching the military swarm around shooting uselessly at Godzilla only to be destroyed, so in response what does the military do? They send more military to shoot more ineffective bullers only to be destroyed before deciding to nuke it. Ah yes, classic Godzilla.
-
! I think alot of the human parts was just burping chunks off exposition, and the only moments I really felt immersed was when Ryan Cranston was on the screen. Some moments really got to me though, for instance when our bland hero rescues a little Japanese child and when they jumped out of the airplane.
All of the moments with Godzilla was unbelievably juicy, and while I wanted more, I do think that everything in the movie leading up to the big homie was totally worth the time. Even though somebody might wanna make an abridged version later on, where it's just every moment Godzilla appears.
And we're gonna have to be a little forgiving: it's the directors second movie. He still got time to learn from his mistakes. I definetly think we are looking at a future Spielberg. I just really hope there won't be any shitty sequels to this one.
-

What film franchise doesn't have one?
-
What film franchise doesn't have one?
Back to the Future
Toy Story
Evil DeadThose are off the top of my head but the general rule is yes, the market is saturated im crappy sequels.
-
After this weekend, there will be sequels but Legendary seems to know what they are doing so I'm not particularly worried.
-
Yeah, the people complaining about "TOO MANY PEOPLE NOT ENOUGH MONSTERS" have probably not actually seen a Godzilla movie. It's always brief, five minute glimpses of the big guy throughout the movie with the big half-hour brawl at the end.
This really was the perfect Godzilla movie and I welcome the fuck out of the 20+ sequels.
-
So Godzilla did secure a sequel already. Great!
Looks like it was couple of million bucks short of beating Captain America 2's record for this year but still that was some huge debut. -
! Really, a bunch of short nonfights prior to the big battle at the end makes a lot more sense to me; flight aside, the male is completely outclassed by Godzilla in every way and has more important things to do anyway than lose a fight. If there were more than two MUTOs, that'd be one thing but any extended fight before the male and female meet up would have to stretch for a reason for Godzilla to have trouble with a single male MUTO.
-
Going to remind people here to BEWARE OF SPOILERS.
-
Saw it tonight, and it was pretty good. I may have had my expectations somewhat high but they were met well enough to satisfy me.
[hide]Id say for the most part it was handled very well, godzilla felt hulking and awesome. I really liked how his atomic breath's first use was handled, especially how the fins lit up. I dont mind the human aspects as much as many people did (i expected it), it was set up and like another said it was to make us feel what those who were in that situation felt and saw.The muto were the main threat, so i am a bit disappointed that godzilla wasnt causing as much fear (hell it felt like they were escorting him), he should have been the bigger problem IMO. His nuclear message was a bit subdued as well, although it was made for our era and the nuclear power plant disaster kinda rang with fukushima and all that so it worked well enough. All said and done I liked it, i liked his design, and shit got wrecked so id say it was a successful new take on the big G.[/hide]
Now most of all, im hoping this will trigger toho to get back into godzilla making action like they did after the last US movie.
-
This film was absolutely awful.
The best part was Ken Watnabe's initial "They call him…Gojira"...oh, and of course, Bryan Cranston was excellent.
Other than that...I didn't really enjoy a whole lot.
-

The main reason for the Millennium series was that Toho disliked the Sony Tristar Godzilla but they were apparently really pleased with this one. Plus it doesn't really seem necessary; this one film made as much at the box office in one weekend in the United States alone as the Millennium series earned during its entire run.

Yeah that's true, but even if it's not for that reason id still like to see them continue their series at the same time. Kaiju movies in the classic method are disappearing (except for sentai), so it would please me to see It come back after the recent resurgence of popularity. Although the millennium series was a bit shaky in many ways, so I'm curious if they could produce something quite different.
-
! If there's one thing I learned from movies like this it's that whenever there's a monster, mutant, alien, or just a natural attack DO NOT get on the San Francisco Bridge.
-
I'm only skimming briefly here but are people seriously complaining that there wasn't enough actual Godzilla in the movie? Like, have you guys ever seen Godzilla movies before? They're pretty much all like that. Except the anomalous first one.
I enjoyed it quite a bit. Despite some pretty dumb plot moments, it was a lot of fun to watch and not think too hard. Honestly compared to Pacific Rim I thought this was way better.
-
! Let's nuke it off the coast of Cali. Ok, whoops the monster took the nuke into the middle of the city to feed its eggs and we couldn't evacuate everyone. Oh no! Looks like we need a hero to rescue us! A man! An army man! A bomb specialist in the area! Our human protagonist!
-
As a Godzilla noob, the gist of what I'm getting from this thread is
- This new movie focuses a lot on human characters
- Said human characters are uninteresting. I don't think anyone has argued this point.
- So, every time Godzilla is absent-which appears to be often? - The stuff on screen is really not that interesting? Making a lot of the movie sans the end uinteresting?
But this not a valid complaint, since all the other Godzilla movies had their focus mostly on uninteresting humans? That…doesn't seem like the greatest selling point for a franchise. Since its so massively popular, I'm assuming this is not the always the case though? Is it a Pacific Rim type deal, where scenes with cliche characters are saved by good performances, good direction, and a sense of un-cynical earnestness? (I like Pacific Rim a lot)
Overall, as a total Godzilla novice (who I'm guessing a reboot such as this is aimed at?), all the "its like you've never seen a Godzilla movie!"comments are not making me run to the theater. Barring a friend-event, this sounds like a home release wait for me.

It's not because the characters are not really interesting that what happen on screen isn't.
Characters are more used as a plot device in this one. It's especially evident with main character! who is linked in multiple convenient ways to the MUTOs, the path they take and human actions to counter them.

Amen brother. Like really, event the last movie 10 years ago. "Godzilla final wars" (that is one of the craziest of the saga) put Godzilla in the background for almost the entire movie (He appears in the last act of the film), and he is used for the same purpose that in this version. You have a giant monster, let the other giant monster fight it.
And you can say that for almost all of the Godzilla movies ever made. And really they present Godzilla far sooner that i expected.
Do you want to complain about a film missing the maing protagonist for almost the entire movie, watch again "The dark knight rises". -
I'm only skimming briefly here but are people seriously complaining that there wasn't enough actual Godzilla in the movie? Like, have you guys ever seen Godzilla movies before? They're pretty much all like that. Except the anomalous first one.
! Maybe my memory is a bit hazy … i mean, it's a long time since i've seen a Godzilla movie. But i can't think of one Godzilla movie that has less Godzilla-screentime than this one.
! I liked the build up a while but they were teasing and building and teasing ... And after the Haiwaii-scene when they cut away from the fight i just thought "oh, come on now, just give me one minute of Godzilla kicking that lame Muto's ass!" And they kept going with the teasing.
! But when they showed the fight ... oh damn, was it awesome!! I loved it!
The rest was alright, i didn't care too much about the characters (except for Bryan Cranston) but it didn't bore me either. -
@Daz:
But this not a valid complaint, since all the other Godzilla movies had their focus mostly on uninteresting humans? That…doesn't seem like the greatest selling point for a franchise.
It's not that it's "not valid" as a complaint, it's just that it's kind of an established formula. It has worked for a long time, for better or for worse. It's like someone coming out of a James Bond movie complaining that the villain was too outlandish. I would expect people to have at least a small idea of what they're getting themselves into. It's fine if you don't like the movie, but you can't really yell "they promised me 2 hours of Godzilla rampaging!" Because they didn't, and historically that notion is not supported.
I don't care to get into debates about the characters. Cranston was great, the rest were whatever, but the plot moved along and I was pretty consistently entertained. Yes, there were some stupid moments as I mentioned, but eh. They made a lot of nods to earlier stuff in the franchise, and at times it seemed to me that they even nodded to all the campy stuff. Especially Watanabe's character. I guess it's just not for everyone.
-
- Military tries to stop giant monsters, fails horribly and hilariously
- Random POV humans you don't care about
- Godzilla only shown in short bursts until the finale
- Bizarre contrivance that draws the POV humans into close contact with giant monsters
- Massive monster brawl at the end with the most destruction
These are all things that are in all the other Godzilla movies (save the first - which is a straight oddball in comparison to everything else - and Final Wars sorta.)
You really need to understand that this is simply how 99.9% of Godzilla movies work. A movie designed to be a grand homage to Big G should not be expected to deviate all that much from the formula.

Again, Godzilla's screentime wasn't the movie's problem. It was the annoying cuts and the cliche uninteresting human characters that were merely used to ploddingly kick the story along until Godzilla took the reins. Cliche, I understand but don't tell me they're supposed to be uninteresting because Godzilla is the real main character and everyone else are just background characters because, that's just lazy filmaking. There's just no good excuse for that because of Godzilla's constrained screentime. If you're going to fill in the movie with plot devices fill it with people we care about to move the plot along, or maybe I'm the only one that simply didn't care for the protagonist.
Yeah, he did his job and moved the story along in the most bland way possible.
! They should've kept Bryan Cranston's character alive and did a father & son team! They could've made it work.

oh most definitely he is even practically smiling in my avatar (well might be more of a grin but..)

A common complaint I've heard among the circles was
! That this movie would have been infinitely better had Bryan Cranston's character not died and had been the lead role throughout the film instead, because among the human cast, he was the most engaging/likeable more so than Aaron taylor johnson's character, which some have said was generic and bland.
Thoughts?

Truthfully I do agree
! But even without Cranston the fight between Godzilla and the 2 Muto's pretty much pulled all attention from anything involving Aaron's or the humans in general

! i think just having Cranston survive and then sticking around Watanabe during the entire operation would've elevated the movie. That way there's two actors that can play off each other instead of Watanabe just being in his own world in a way during the rest of the movie.
! I mean, maybe putting a different actor instead of Aaron Taylor Johnson could've worked, but I saw his role as similar to Brad Pitt's in World War Z in that they both aren't really much more than a vehicle for the plot. I just think it's probably just difficult to make those characters have a strong presence in general, though Johnson was pretty non-emotive during the movie, and even that's arguably the point because a character that can't keep his emotions in like that probably couldn't take the constant toll they go through.Having never watched Godzilla before, I did find the teases annoying, but overall it was a solid movie.

Who made the previous Godzilla cartoon? Also is there a chance that there might be a new one
-
Columbia Tri-Star made Godzilla: The Series; far as a new show goes, I guess it depends on Toho and how well merchandise sells.

Saw Godzilla earlier in the day with my brother; Left a very happy camper…
! An excellent film and worthy of the 60 year legacy, IMO. The limited time of Godzilla didn't bother me, as it was better to slowly build him up, then unleash the King in all his glory in classic Kaiju combat at the finale. The MUTOs were awesome too, and they really felt like a devastating threat to the planet_(Seriously, having hundreds of those freaks fully grown walking around Earth? No thanks! lol)_ in addition to holding their own against Godzilla.
! The cast was pretty good to me, though Bryan Cranston was freaking awesome as always. Shame his character died early on in the film, but it didn't deviate me from enjoying the rest of the movie as the tempo just kept going, mainly with the human aspect & POV of dealing with creatures of this magnitude, whether it be Godzilla or the MUTOs…
! And that finale was EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The way that Godzilla fights and the ferocity of the MUTOs was amazing, specifically when they ganged up on him; And that Atomic Breath: Perfect. Just PERFECT!! :)
! The way he killed the MUTOs was just badass; I know a lot are talking about how epicly he destroyed the female**(Which is how you finish a fight!!)**, but killing the male by smashing him into the building with a good old-fashioned tail whip!? Like swatting a fly against a wall!? Old school Godzilla… :DI cannot wait for the sequel, and Godzilla is gonna bring some of his old friends/foes with him for sure; Imagine seeing Rodan or even King Ghidorah done like this, it will be nothing short of epic!!! :D
My friends… THE KING IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now we won't see a sequel till 2016-17, because Gareth Edwards is going to make Star Wars spin-off first.

And that is damn shame. Since A) Toho may take license back till then. B) It's two-three years away. C) Who even cares about Star Wars spin-off?

Weren't going to see a sequel until then anyway. Unless they're shot back to back these things take 2 or 3 years to do properly anyway, especially with modern effects.
Most directors/actors juggle multiple projects and do something between films in a franchise.
-
Well, provided that they don't hand it off to somebody else anyway.
It'd still be 2016 at the earliest though just because of all the CGI; they can't just crank these out like Toho used to.
