For this double spread alone, Shimabukuro wins at life.
This man's ona FUCKING ROLL. Has Toriko been this good ever before?

I spot four treasure chests, they better go collect em.
and I wanna see that dual wielding swordsman too.

Oh and thanks Kewl, it always impressed me how you stay up to 2am for this. I thought you'd have more time given A-Destiny has nothing to do at the moment, but I guess not?
Has Toriko been this good ever before?
Yeah, it was even better during the Jewel Meat and Ice Hell arcs. All this whimsy is nice, but I wish it was a bit better developed. I'm kinda scared that we'll be out of this "impenetrable maze" in about two chapters time even though the Gourmet World has the potential to be at least three times as long as the Human World half of the manga was.
Take your time, Shima. We love what you're doing, but please man, just slow down and let us enjoy the adventure.
Great chapter. Thanks, Kewl!!! Burning the candle at both ends for us, what a guy!

One of the treasure chests seems to be inside an erupting volcano. This is like the next level of difficulty after Death Falls, I guess. When's Sani going to be able to walk on lava?

Jewel and Ice are definitely the best arcs overall, but as sheer, balls to the wall environmental hazard madness, this is just. . .crazy.
Though, I'm not gonna lie. . .the last page did put me on guard a bit. I just dread that Frohze/Joa/Fucktard and everything sorrounding him. I got so tired of all the vague mumbo jumbo around the eclipse, Neo, Acacia, the blue nitros. . .that I fear they're already back to ruin my enjoyment again. . .
I like how Zebra is always left out when they make those funny faces.
I really love that Shima does this, as well. It was really funny how Zebra did finally show up in a reaction panel, only to sigh and show his scary side.
I'm the opposite. I've become jaded of the crazy environmental hazards and the most intriguing thing about this chapter was what Joa was up to. No matter how stupid the NEO/Eclipse/Bishokukai/Blue Nitro plot stuff from the Cooking Fest got, from now on, it will always be more interesting to me than wacky animal/environment fanservice and adventure for adventure's sake.

Well, I think you might be in store for a long, disappointing ride.
The thing that's gotten the most hype about Gourmet World is the hazardous environment. Were you expecting something different than what we are currently seeing? It's pretty much like we are seeing some of the craziest stuff from the Human World taken to the nth degree. This cave maze, for instance, is very reminiscent of the maze leading to the subterranean breeding ground of the Puffer Whales.
Isn't this the sort of thing what we've been told to expect of Gourmet World by actual characters in the story?
Still not as impressive as the Gourmet Pyramid was, though. And even that was traversed in… what, three chapters?
Well, sure, it definitely feels to be going at a breakneck pace, so maybe not such a long, disappointing ride. Maybe just a short one.
I do wish Shima would steady the progression a little more. I was unimpressed when the wheel demons were dealt with in like two chapters, but they were kind of lame to look at. Now seems to be a great opportunity for Shima to take a little more time with the adventure. They're lost in a maze, right?
Also, I need to see how this Food Luck thing with Komatsu is going to work.
Hey, there's a giant dual-wielding swords down there too. Bottom right-hand corner.
Darn, Shima, you'd better not skip all of this potential awesomeness.

No, I won't be disappointed. Just mildly bored. Lots of crazy environments/animals is completely within my expectations of what we will see in the Gourmet World. What I didn't expect was that the appeal of seeing ever wackier animals/environments would wear off on me. It's like "Oh, another giant killer jackalope, yawn". It's not impressive to me anymore and stopped being so after the Four Beast limbs merged into a boring blob.
But in between the endless showcase of animals/environments that everyone else seems to love, there should be some cool cooking moments for Komatsu, some crazy fights with the Bishokukai/NEO, and some intriguing plot stuff about the Eclipse/GOD/Acacia, which everyone else seems to hate. That's enough to make the 3 minutes of reading per week worth it for me.
The Joa page did absolutely nothing for me. Not just because of Exposition/world building burnout from the cooking fest but also because:
it cut away from the main plotline.
In both Toriko and One Piece, I have come to realize that both deliver best when not fragmented to tiny montage-like bits of scenes. The simple fact that the last few chapters has been almost nothing but the Komatsu pirates and their pets has all by itself been wondrously refreshing. Storytelling is so much easier when you don't have to cut away to a bazillion other plotthreads; which is also why this weeks OP chapter was a ton of fun.
Sooner or later the plot has to at some point shift focus to other places. Otherwise it would be difficult to build up future developments and such, if they are not properly established.

I feel the same way, loved that labyrinth spread. Good chapter yet again, but like Daz said I hope we don't change scenes too much.
I think the maze would be fine if Shima spends only a few pages on navigation as long we get to explore a lot of the rooms and if the overall pace is nice and slow.

Basically, regardless of how many projects I'm working on have we get raws for Toriko on Tuesday night and have to get through the whole thing in a few hours. Largely this has to do with the fact that people on the team live in Europe and don't really have time to be up to 6AM or later working on this. It's simply that there's a small time frame where it's possible to do unless we are going to wait for everyone to sleep, go to work, and get home the next day. So as I translate it and do some of the typesetting and redrawing as well as releasing, I tend to have the most work to do and can't really just relax and take my time all that much. I also need to manage things and make sure we have people on every task.
Also, with the two animes in Anime-Destiny done or at least between seasons right now, I've got a whole bunch of back projects that I've had to put off for a year or more which I now want to go back to. The last couple months I've been finishing shorter things (The end of Doubutsu no Kuni, Wolfsmund, catching up on Innocent, that sorta thing) and once I'm done with all those I'm gonna try to go back to translating 81 Diver, 3-Gatsu no Lion, Omoni Naitemasu, and The Book (The Jojo novel). I also wanna scanlate Ring and Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi at some poin, and hopefully HQ volume scanlations for more of Gintama and Toriko will get done, too.
Great, most OP character becomes more OP.
This has to be the weakest chapter in a while.
These last few chapters have just been so good, the only thing lacking is a particularly interesting main cast of characters. Problem is, with everyone wanting more fights, all this is going to get abandoned by Shima. Though it's not too crazy to mix exploration with fights, which could be really fun.
Mitsutoshi has been mixing exploration with fights in pretty much every arc except Cooking Fest, which is the equivalent of Marineford that also wasn't centered on adventure. The rest was al fun, adventure, exploration, beasts, ingredients and whatnot.

I predict the trip through the giant maze is going to last a while, especially if the that giant beast on the left side is blocking the exit.

Well now that you mention it…I think the art has improved a bit since then too.
Still no info about the upcoming volume? It should come out next week IIRC

June 4th, along with the fanbook (volume 29.5). Hopefully next week we'll get news about it, seeing as it's getting the cover and color pages for its anniversary, vol 30, and 29.5. Can't wait :)
Do we have any info regarding the fanbook? will it include trivia about the characters, for example?
Has anybody else wondered…? How did those treasure chests get down there in the first place? :p
There are people diving down into the gold swamp with treasure chests!
THAT'S what I want to learn more about.
Sidenote: I know they're probably not actual treasure chests.

Indeed, they're clearly Mimics.

This. This makes sense, lol.

I have no idea, really :( It's different from a Databook though, so it may not have that much info on characters. Not sure :)
All I have are the 2 preview pics, which u may've already seen before:
!
Edit:
Want to get your ideas out in front of Shimaboo?

Hell yes! If I come up with some good ideas I'll definitely submit them, I thought we would never have the chance to do so over here.

I have found my people
Oh god! Not even 1 chapter in this maze. -_-
LOL lots of adventure lovers are gonna be put off by this chapter.
Oh god! Not even 1 chapter in this maze. -_-
Sigh. All that glorious double-spread wasted.
Didn't even show them opening the treasure chests either.
Yup.
! C'mon people. Even if the cliffhanger wasn't about Joa and the "villainous plot" it was pretty clear that Komatsu's food luck would send them down the right path and that what we saw last chapter was all we would see of the gigantic maze and they would be out this chapter. Seriously, anybody expecting more doesn't really know how Toriko operates by now. That said, it still doesn't make it less disappointing that we didn't see more.
! And this chapter officially confirms it. I find the nitro boring. Shame they're going to be the seemingly "big bad"/hidden mystery of the Toriko universe. In a world where genetic mutation and gourmet cells can give you essentially any power/ability, a group of strong people that seemingly all look the same isn't as interesting. Those nobles and the Joa part just seemed to get in the way of the adventure side of the story.
! I do appreciate finding out who Joa is I guess, but if it really is just a descendant, this cliffhanger becomes rather odd. Yet I still prefer descendant than dark revival story. Not to mention this probably means Joa is actually a guy, right?
I really wanted to see some adventure in the maze as well, slightly disappointed we didn't get any. At least we got to know who Joa is, so there's that.
Heh, at least wel'll get to see Buranchi again. So Ume is with Joa and he has exceptional food luck too, interesting.
Guess I'm the odd one out again this week. I'm glad the Joa/Blue Nitro stuff got focus. It was a bit cryptic for how many pages it got though.
Sigh food luck says fuck you to excitement.
And i really don't like how those Nitros look like, they seem way too calm to be called Nitro.
The only thing that drew me to liking Nitro was how "mindless" they were in battle, sure they're an ancient civilization and such but man they need to live up to the other Nitros, they all need to be Tommy like whn it comes to actual fighting.

You aren't alone! I loved this chapter as well. I'm glad we don't have to spend 5 months in the maze.
And…
!
There are 8 seats but only 7 Blue Nitro present?
8 Ingredients
8 Nitro
8 Continents
8 Beast Kings
7 Ancient Civilizations said to somehow be connected to the Full Course.
How do they all connect?
Sigh food luck says fuck you to excitement.

The one that killed Ichiryuu was capable of human speech and anything but mindless.
I wonder if that Blue Nitro to the right of the big one is the one that killed Ichiryuu?
One of them seems like the one from Hozone herb arc.
I didn't get to see the spaghetti monster. :(
I wonder if that Blue Nitro to the right of the big one is the one that killed Ichiryuu?
This is definitely correct. Nice eyes.
As for the Ozone Herb arc nitro…I couldn't tell or match this one up.
Empty seat is Chichi's place, but he betrayed them.
The last five chapters were great, old-school adventuring fun. Now fucking Frohze and her global conspiracy shit comes along and the adventuring stuff is pushed to the side-line and what do you know, the chapter sucks.
You would think Shima would see a pattern?
The one that killed Ichiryuu was capable of human speech and anything but mindless.
That's why i quoted it, mindless as in going on a rampage like the pyramid one and Tommy when the real fight starts, not some Nitro with a calculating mind that goes all about plans or something which is the vibe those blue Nitro gave me and which contradicts the whole meaning of the name.

Maybe Japan doesn't like the adventure chapters. I remember last week's chapter was fairly low on the T.O.C. I don't feel like looking too far back into the previous issues to see how's it done, but think it's been in the top 5-7 consistently.
Expecting the next chapter or two though to explore the Bewitching Food World and setting up the next plot. As fun as the last few chapters have been the gang's adventure has been lacking focus.
