! I expected Hayama would score at least as much as Alice did…

! Curry muffin/souffle? Looks really good
-
! Looks more like a fish-head curry pot pie to me. I guess the nan dough he had made at the start of this competition was used as the shell, which seals in all the amazing smells and flavors. That kind of thing gets my mouth watering.
! Souma had the same idea, but with his curried risotto inside of an omelette. -
Random thought: Do you guys think Soma is eventually going to develop a more personal style (Like how the Aldini's specialty is Italian, Tadakoro's is Japanese country dishes, Alice has scientific cooking, etc.) or do you think he'll just continue to be the guy who really does everything?
-

Soma does like to make food that seems low class come out better than expected. Also foods that usually have an unexpected twist to them. I don't know what you would call that style though.
-
I'd say Soma actually has a pretty personal style to begin with. It tends to be similar to his father.
He constantly takes everything he's learned and mixes it together to create something new.
In that sense he's kind of the guy with the superpower to absorb all other superpowers.I'd say the chances of that changing are very low. For one it's just the perfect story device to keep the series fresh.
Here is this guy that's so free in his cooking and doesn't conform to anything. That allows for way more possibilities in how he tackles all the challenges thrown his way. It's not bound by expectations and it keeps the readers guessing. What's the next dish he's going to cook up?
And while minor the absence of a specialization makes it also easier to identify with him which is a big plus for the main protagonist. -
Brilliant chapter, I need 59 now!

Chapter's out: [http://casanovascans.com/read/shokugeki_no_soma/en/0/58/page/1
I](http://casanovascans.com/read/shokugeki_no_soma/en/0/58/page/1)'m not the biggest fan of fish curry but I wouldn't mind trying out Hayama's dish
-
i have Holy Basil plant(called Tulsi ) in my house….but it is not really used in cooking here...it do enriches yogurt's flavor, but mostly used in medical purpose..basil paste with honey is great for cold....also it grows a plenty in my house...it's seeds form at the top of the stems and scatter away in the wind eventually..that way it propagate in my garden....so harvesting is really no big deal....
though i don't understand what Souma doing in front of Hayama..he should be in front of judges...
-
Yes, such a nice chapter…
The flashback was nice because the whole ministory ends with that later panel with Jun Shiomi makes blush because of Hayama's dish. I bet it will be duel between Jun and Soma in which she will try to avenge his assistant.
So Natsume has a crush on Hayama who wants to be with Jun … what's next?
About the dishes, Hayama's one was lovely.
And that take-that-spoon panel…! Wow ... I even wanted that Soma would have thrown back the spoon to Hayama to let him cut his omelette... -
omelette and risotto… in real cooking terms... i don't really think that would work :wassat:
-
Great chapter.
I'm boarding the HayamaxJun ship. I can't wait to see the explanation for his devotion.
Now that Erina is watching Souma with Isshiki and Fumio, I'm expecting some interesting development.
For example if one of them say something like "as expected from Saiba's son"… -
Wow, everything in this chapter was done REALLY well. Like, in an ultimate shonen kind of way.
-
Great chapter as always. Love the flair that Souma delivers his aroma bomb with.
-
Just read the translation. Hayama used some ultra-rare spice in his dish and got that score in a curry challenge, this guy is going to be no big deal for Soma after he gets defeated this round. Alice's aid would be more of a threat than Hayama in future rounds imo. Interesting how it's eggs again, a frequent ingredient that usually involves Soma and Erina. Entrance exam ingredient and breakfast buffet ingredient.

He probably won't have too much in terms of narrative after this part, but it's as the judges said for Hayama. He used Holy Basil skillfully and also combined it with its detoxifying properties as well as with the yogurt, and of course all the rest of the spices fell into place. I wouldn't say this is the same sort of thing as Nikumi using super grade meat more than it is the cook consulting for this having liberty to use a variety of resources and ideas at his disposal.
-
I'm predicting Soma will lose by a point or two this round, but come back in the finals. Hayama didn't get a perfect score from that other judge so he is still missing some aspect of his dish. I'm guessing Soma will get a 10/10 from the judge that gave Hayama an 8, but lose in points with the other judges.
-
I want to know what four-eyes yankee 9th seat is planning to sabotage Soma.

Seems super unlikely, that would just screw with the flow of the story. Seriously what does Soma losing even accomplish? This is the arc that will be the built up to a face off with the 9th seat. We have the main antagonist of round 1 Hayama and hey we already have the main antagonist of the second round in Alice.
Him losing would mean he would have to have another face off with Hayama, it would screw with the built up with the 9th seat guy(hey that's the guy that's lost to Mr.spices what a threat better take him out… nope don't see that.) And it would hinder a round 2 face off with Alice.
So Soma losing to Hayama does exactly nothing but delay pretty much anything that has been set up, for I don't know exactly what.
Is Hayama really that interesting of an adversary to be worth facing twice? Him being the spices guy makes him rather feel like the one-trick pony to overcome, at least currently.Pretty much the whole Alice thing and the way Alice and Hayama are positioned made me change my mind on Soma even tying with him.
Soma beating the guy by 1 point and tying with Alice perfectly sets up a clean stage for round 2. -
i am quite sure Souma will touch Alice's score 95…then he will beat her in final...

Soma beating the guy by 1 point and tying with Alice perfectly sets up a clean stage for round 2.All 4 from each block are going up against each other in the finals though, nobody is getting knocked out just yet. I see Soma only getting 2nd or 3rd in the preliminaries, dosen't mean he really lost against Hayama yet though. If he gets the 2 points from the judge that Hayama coulden't get, then I think thats win enough for him in the preliminaries despite not completely overcoming him yet. The finals is the real battle. I feel like Alice's rival in this is Megumi, not Soma.

As previously addressed, this dish this round is Curry, which is pretty much right up Hayama's alley given curry's heavy usage of spices. There is no real hill to climb for Souma to defeat Hayama later if he cannot best him at Hayama's specialty.
Besides, Alice isn't rivaled with Megumi. Nobody could possibly be a rival for sweet Megumi.
Do we even know how this tournament goes anyway? They're trying to find new seats for the Elite 10, so will there actually be a final duo?

Hayama got a perfect score from 2 of the 3 judges, the other he only got an 8. Soma will have something in his dish that will make that judge give him a perfect score that Hayama couldn't get. That enough I think would be a defeat for Hayama despite beating Soma in the preliminaries. The finals are still there, I personally feel that if Soma beats Hayama right off the bat it'll kill the build up for Hayama. If anything its the finals where Soma will climb over the hill and surpass Hayama imo.
Alice vs Megumi I think its just a heart filled personal cooking vs scientific cooking with no heart.
Anyways yea, with all the hype with Hayama and curry I just don't see him getting beat at the preliminaries. I just feel its too early right now.
On another note I'm curious to how curry and omelette work. Sounds delicious honestly, but its not something thats common is it?
-
You keep referring to the 18 points as a single judge, but there's five judges. 20 + 20 + 18 + (18) + (18) = 94 (Alternatively, 20-20-18-17-19). Only the curry twins have been given additional background as judges, so I don't feel that the author has put enough weight behind the other four where one of them giving 20 points to Soma would be of equal value.
These types of stories tend to place characters in tiers of skill, and Soma is destined to reach the top tier by virtue of being the main character. Hayama seems like he would slide into the second tier along with (the older) Aldini. As others have mentioned, characters have been set up as "higher up" than Hayama for Soma to surpass in the future (Jun, 9th seat, Alice, and the other seats).
-
I don't see the point in comparing a score from Block A to a score from Block B since they have different judges.
As for who will win Block A, the flow of the story makes me think it will be Souma.
His father told him not to lose to anyone before facing him again. Having him lose in his first battle would be wrong. -
Souma will undoubtedly surpass Hayama's score, otherwise all the build-up in this round would be wasted. I'm honestly surprised that some people can't see this. But I guess they will once it happens next week.
Despite that, I liked Hayama's dish. And while his flashback was only a short one, I liked what I saw. Rising from a kid in the slums to a curry prodigy is quite the feat. What scored him even more points in my book afterwards was him nonchalantly turning down the offer of one of the curry twins; proclaiming his loyalty to Jun.

Let me just point out that using the Holy Basil for culinary purpose is sacrilege among Vishnu worshiping part of the world. :ninja:

This manga needs an anime. Preferably a Madhouse production, along the lines of HxH quality. With good filler if any. And luscious colours… like when they animated the HxH turkey :ninja:

That doesn't matter for the storytelling though. What counts is what the story deals with.
In practice Soma was pratically fighting against Ibuki, Marui and Nikumi this round too. Yet those didn't get any highlight with him because the main setup was the him vs Hayama. If he loses this round it will end up being another round of Hayama vs Soma which I really don't see. It's way to messy for readers to make the story deal with 2 antagonist(Soma vs Alice and Hayama) at literally the same time, especially when the preset is that he lost against Hayama. Any tension built up between him and Alice would be pretty ineffective.I also don't see why you're putting Alice as Megumi's rival these two didn't interact at all there was no built up for them and the difference in their current skill level is too far apart to make her winning during this seem reasonable, which makes for poor tension built up again.
I don't see the point in comparing a score from Block A to a score from Block B since they have different judges.
Except the characters themselves did it? We had this chapter Isshiki comparing Hayama's full points with Alice's 19 points across the board.
Then we had that chapter about Hisako Erina's aide where she got 92 points and right at the end of it Ryou Alice's aide have 93 points to make us think, oh shit!(Underlined just to make it more clear that a comparison between these two was intended)
It seems pretty reasonable to me to compare scores across the block. -
For the score keeping, you can kinda guess that that's why the story conveniently has two curry sisters with one in each block for the contrast in their reactions. It's obviously not an objective scale, but it does make for a good comparison to say "Wow, so these people were impressed enough to give perfect scores to high schoolers!"
What days do the RAWs come out?
Thurs-Fri generally

Soma will beat Hayama who will then get his kicked by Alice or someone to hype up Soma's final opponent. Come on guys, this isn't hard to predict.

Let me just point out that using the Holy Basil for culinary purpose is sacrilege among Vishnu worshiping part of the world. :ninja:
in fact first time i am hearing of using it for increasing aroma…i never thought it was used outside Indian subcontinent...
-
If Soma gets 1st, he probably will Alice's 5 19's across the board to get 95.
-
also it grows a plenty in my house…it's seeds form at the top of the stems and scatter away in the wind eventually..that way it propagate in my garden....so harvesting is really no big deal....
That's because you live in the environment for it.
The entire Earth doesn't have the same climate as India, you know.Holy Basil is hard to grow in many parts of the world with varying climate, it is very fragile against cold, and prefers summer-like temperature. Many places in northern hemisphere, including Japan, have hard time cultivating it. (although with ideal greenhouse conditions, it should be possible)

eh 4? my math is bad. Anyways though, the curry sister still gave a perfect score and she is supposed to be an expert on it. Why did the other judges give Hayama just 18 then?
I really don't feel Hayama is a second tier character though. The entire arc Soma is focused on beating Hayama, only because he feels that Hayama is the best at curry and thats what this current arc is about. Alice's specialty isn't cooking but some sciencey cooking stuff. Yes I agree Alice will probably be some major boss in later arcs, but it would be in her own specialty that Soma would beat her in, not curry.

Well whats wrong with Soma losing the first round? It happens in story telling all the time.
ex. Luffy lost against crocodile twice before finally beating him in the end. Luke lost to Vader the first few times before finally beating him in the end. It adds to the tension, not dulls it. I don't think it'll make the finals boring if Soma lost against hayama, but more interesting because it'll make Soma realize that beating Hayma isn't that easy and he will have to give it his all in the finals.
I dont think Alice and Soma really have a rivalry/tension though right now though, they had zero interaction through this arc. She thought Soma would fail at the breakfast test a while ago and that was about it. Megumi beat Alice in terms of having some heart in her cooking when the judge said, "after this, the last dish was lacking blah blah" and Alice looking surprised at that comment.
Let me just point out that using the Holy Basil for culinary purpose is sacrilege among Vishnu worshiping part of the world. :ninja:
Out of curiosity, what makes it "holy" exactly? Is there a story behind it?

Tulsi is the plant of goddess Lakshmi, and has religious ties as well as being an important part of ancient Indian medicine.

The preliminaries' theme is Curry. That doesn't necessarily mean the rest of the tournament is focused on curry, and really it shouldn't be. That's why Souma needs to beat Hayama here and now. Anything past this simply won't have the same meaning.

There isn't anything particularly wrong with losing the first round, but it needs to have some significance behind it.
Croc was a super big opponent and was Luffy's first real top tier enemy in the grand line. Vader was of course a big guy in the empire but more importantly "What Luke could become if he becomes seduced by the dark side" because he was Luke's father. In this sort of significance, Souma got a big beat down that he needs to improve after he got technically beat by the alumnus 1st seat, Shinomiya. Having been beat down here and moving on to a different dish for Hayama simply doesn't have any same sort of impact behind it.
I don't think Hayama is destined to fade to completely being sidelined after this, but in this sort of competition, this is key that Souma gets his victory here. And while you can argue that Souma and Alice haven't had any interactions yet, Alice is definitely the top tier of the other block, and Alice is definitely more competition for Souma than Megumi, whose heart is really really good, but as we've seen with the training camp, her skills are still lacking in comparison to the top tiers. Alice and Megumi were definitely placed in the same block for contrast, but I don't really see them as rivals by any means. There's definitely time to develop more interaction as we figure out how the rest of the tournament works, and at that point we can probably see more hype for Souma and Alice, the presumably highest contenders for the Elite 10 council.

Your examples don't work because you're citing story lines where the protagonist had 1 clear antagonist. Those storylines revolve around overcoming that one antagonist. And while Star Wars has technically 2 villains with Sidious and Vader the story didn't really deal with Sidious. It still was all about Vader and at the end he is the one that deals with Sidious.
If you'd equate the Luffy example to Soma it would be more like Luffy losing to Blueno at the top of the tower while the Lucci faceoff was imminent.(not quite perfect since Blueno doesn't really have the same built up, but the outcome seems similar in that it would unnecessarily delay everything)
As I already said if Hayama beats Soma this round, round 2 will end up either with a messy storyline that deals with 2 antagonist(Hayama and Alice) or just Hayama himself again which I already said I don't see the point of. Him losing also messes with the bigger set up of the 9th seat.
http://manga.casanovascans.com/read/shokugeki_no_soma/en/0/40/page/17
This and the next three pages pretty much set up a showdown. Heck she says it straight out she hopes to battle with him and Erina for the seats.
I think this is a stronger foundation for a rivalry compared to your example which was done to give some nice contrast for the readers, I don't think it was done as a set up.So I don't know believe what you want time will tell, but I'm fairly certain that Soma won't lose against Hayama.
@Purple:I don't think Hayama is destined to fade to completely being sidelined after this
This touches a bit on something I'm not sure about and that is what's his role after this round?
I don't feel that he's going to continue being a major adversary to Soma.
Cause what does that make Takumi? Which makes it again more likely for Soma to wrap his core storyline up at this special curry stage.
Jesus it feels like I have massive english confusion right now… I can't even tell right now if all the sentences make sense. -
TBH, for some reason, I don't feel very interested in Soma beating a (top for the school setting level) specialist in the curry (unless Hayama is more an expert of aromas rather than merely curry) even though it seems very anticipated.
But for storyline purpose, it would feel more hype if Soma and Alice are to progress as 1st seeds in their blocks and are set to face each other in the final (Predicting it would be play-offs for the 8 that qualify).
If Hayama outrank Soma in this preliminary (and Soma beats Hayama in the semis) and Alice is still the contestant Soma will face in the final, Soma has to come 3rd,
otherwise [if Soma is 2nd to Hayama] (in my chart*), it would Soma vs Alice in the semi with winner facing Hayama.
A1 vs B4

A3 vs B2B1 vs A4

This touches a bit on something I'm not sure about and that is what's his role after this round?
I don't feel that he's going to continue being a major adversary to Soma.
Cause what does that make Takumi? Which makes it again more likely for Soma to wrap his core storyline up at this special curry stage.I think the amount of characters the writer has set up is a good mix that hopefully doesn't go the way of Naruto/Bleach where pretty much everyone that gets brought up gets sidelined, but it could be something like Nikumi showing up from time to time.
At the very least, he's clearly made it to the next round of the elections, so we'll see what he does from there. Curry isn't the only thing that makes good uses of spices, so perhaps he'll come up again in some other competition.
Either way, I don't think he'll be featured too prominently, but for someone to make it this high and fade out completely would be a bit weird.
Takumi'll always be Souma's main rival though. Or Vegeta, I'm not sure.
-
I feel like we'll see Hayama again. His exceptional nose might just be the reason he keeps being relevant throughout the story. While Nikumi has her meat thing, and Takumi being the self-proclaimed rival, Hayama could end up being the nose guy (which, out of context, would sound so very weird).
-
Hayama is the curry specialist and we're in a curry theme battle. If Souma is going to beat him, it'll be here. Not in the next round. He'll still be a recurring background character. I wouldn't be surprised if next round they combine the blocks or make new brackets.
-
@Purple:
Takumi'll always be Souma's main rival though. Or Vegeta, I'm not sure.
If Takumi has chances to be the main antagonist, then other possibility should be Kirilin, not Vegeta….:ninja: He's not a match for Soma.
Anyway, I'm guessing there will be a surprise in the following chapters. Alice seems to be the most stronger contestant now. But I wonder about the meaning of Heizan's words, threatening Soma about his fate in the Autum election: http://casanovascans.com/read/shokugeki_no_soma/en/0/39/page/18 He is one of the elite ten, and has that kind of expectation on this Autum election? Just how he's going to accomplish what he said?
-
Vishnu is lucky Hayama didn't make a holy basil beef curry…
-
In chapter 53, it was mentioned by some Pole Star folks that they feel Block A has tougher judges compared to Block B, let's just put that in the backburner.
How would Takumi get some heat if falls by 5 points (if Soma gets 95) behind Soma?
-

It's not about him ever being a main antagonist to overcome. He's Soma's rival as such it doesn't matter if he's a bit behind that gap can be easily bridged by a challenge in Italian cuisine or preparation or anything. Even Vegeta was always a step behind Goku. Yet he was still his rival.
