Bonney's character arc is partially based on My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean.
(I bet somebody posted this already, but I didn't see it in the last bunch of pages, so…)
LOL.
Why am I not surprised that the real lyrics are extremely morbid?

There are some Japanese martial arts very much alike to Rebecca's style of fight. Aikido is a famous one. This from wikia:
Aikido (Japanese: 合気道 Hepburn: Aikidō?) [a.i.ki.doː] is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Aikido is often translated as "the Way of unifying (with) life energy"[1] or as "the Way of harmonious spirit." Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.
Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical strength, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.
Somehow gives me Cavendish a Jack the Ripper meets Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde feeling.
Being someone who cuts up people by night and Rommel seems to have a BigBen :D
Also the marines try to catch him for a long time but ain`t able to get him^^
His transformation to Mr.Hyde is obvious.

I think the inspiration was Night Baron from Detective Conan. They have similar faces and the Night Baron was never caught. There is also a detective named Hakuba in the series.
Cavendish is a mine of references…
But I honestly have to wonder, why use Rommel? I mean, he was a famous german general, it doesn't exactly fit victorian england, and Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde theme that seems to be going for Cavendish.
This guy is so damn resourceful; it's inspiring. Sure maybe he isn't the best ever, but I think Oda's genius is really 1 of a kind.

Oda isn't European. Maybe to him the distinctions between German and English isn't very big. Kind of like how westerners will casually lump Japan and Korea together.

Oh dear, and we Koreans really hate that.

Japanese people probably hate it too.

I think the equivalent for the US would be like people just throwing cowboys into New York City, which is surrounded by the grand canyon and the hollywood sign.
Also when Southerners go abroad and are called "Yanks" lol. I imagine that must really piss them off.
lol do you, guys think bartolomeo is based on macklemore;

Why not?
It's just like Dressrosa not being exclusively based on Spain, but Greece and Italy as well. I really doubt that Oda isn't able to make a distinction between Germany and England.

Well, I'm Italian and, apart from the colosseum, that, as someone else pointed out, are in Spain and in other countries conquered by the Romans as well, I have found almost nothing that reminds me of Italy.

The whole concept of living toys is extremely Pinocchio.

@The:
London = ロンドン(pronounced RONDON), Rommel = ロンメル(pronounced RONMERU)
Those don't sound alike at all except for the first syllable.

Those don't sound alike at all except for the first syllable.
"Living toys" is quite a common theme in children's fairytales since long before Pinocchio (e.g. Andersen's Tin Soldier). And in Pinocchio there is nothing like "land of living toys".
I really can't see any reference.
I would assume that during research Oda stumbles over many places and names, from which he simply takes aspects to combine it to something new.
So Rommel might just be good/interesting-sounding for him, without him thinking about if it connects to London, which he also used in his Cavendish character.
Because iam moving these days this happened to fall in my sight.

I take it I'm not the only one who gets a strong Steven Tyler vibe from Diamante
Fluttering cape, microphone stand and all
Even do the same thing with their left hands (right from perspective of looking at the pictures)

Physically there's definitely Steven Tyler (maybe a bit of Mick Jagger too) but the clothing?
Aside from leather pants no way. He's wearing a sort of European 1700's military hat that looks like something out of Baron Munchausen (already a proven Oda favorite) or Amadeus.
As for the Petals. I have no clue.
All I know is he's possibly my favorite character design since forever.
The "petals" remind me of a warbonnet.
For the outfit, I wonder if he might be drawing inspiration from another big-haired '80s rocker, everyone's favorite coke-fueled clown DIAMOND DAVE!
More specifically, the crazy cannibal feather headdress he wore for "Eat 'Em and Smile" (lower left here):

OMG they look exactly the same. Oda's cultural influences never ceased to amaze me. Does he just like everything?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves Diamante's character design. I was pleased to see his full design in the recent chapter. For some reason his really long legs along with his clothing and facial expressions make him look epic.
The Steven Tyler inspiration wasn't touched upon after the first time we saw his lips a year ago?

full lips alone aren't that special and with the unrelated chapeau-bras and face painting it wasn't obvious at all.

Just another aspect of my genius then I guess. I called this one on 700 and had my suspicions confirmed by 721.
Steven Tyler was an obvious inspiration and he was accepted as easily as Katsu Shintaro pretty early on.
Now I wonder if we are supposed to see any familiar faces in Pica and Trebol.
Sorry, no matches found?
Anyway, good to hear Silverblade. I was surprised seeing this influx of the Captain Obvious Armada.
Someone a while back suggested Pica might owe something to Glenn Danzig. If (and this is a big if) the three executives are based on singers, Danzig is one of the only ones jacked enough to fit, and there are some definite similarities:
That said, Pica's big lips and mustache aren't like Danzig, so the similarities could be a coincidence (or an indication that he's based on multiple real people).

I don't see any connection at all except that they partially have (completely different) things in their face.
Danzig looks more like Caribou if anything.
So I saw on another board that Lao G may be a homage or something similar to a manga called Cyborg Grandpa G
So I never read this manga so can't say for sure it his or not but if someone that have read it can see if there's any resemblance with the way Lao G acted/behaved to anything from this manga?
So could be say that Trebol is based a little bit to Elton John? Minus the hair(?)
@The:

How the hell do you get
from
If it was Elton he wouldn't have a beard and he'd at very least have glasses. Despite the crazy amount of costumes the man has worn, that's one of his trademarks. (Hell, Elton is more Doflamingo like)
At least pick someone that has even a remote passing resemblance, like ZZ top or Jerry Garcia or Jimmy Page or something. Someone at least remotely known for having a beard.
Well I can see some resemblance:

Not disagreeing with you, but Trebol at least wears glasses (not very similar to Elton John's though). :P
And that Lao G thing seems convincing…
@Hans:

[qimg]http://images.zeit.de/gesellschaft/zeitgeschehen/2011-02/elton-john-2/elton-john-2-540x304.jpg[/qimg]and
If he's being inspired by a real person, Oda's not going to use the 70 year old version of anyone famous, it'd be the iconic well known in their prime versions that he'd be interested in.
If he was using Elton he'd probably have him in a donald duck suit or peacock feathers or a sharp suit or something.
If he was loosely basing a character on Elton John, you'd know it instantly. He'd have a look closer to Django, not… Trebol. (And Django was clearly based on Michael Jackson... in the body language and hat and gloves)
@CaptainAppleJack:
Not disagreeing with you, but Trebol at least wears glasses (not very similar to Elton John's though). :P.
Sorry. Let me rephrase.
If it was Elton he wouldn't have a beard and he'd at very least have crazy outlandish oversized glasses like Elton is famous for. (But then, Dofla is aleady wearing those.)
@Hans:
Well I can see some resemblance:
LOL There is no resemblance at all. Based on your and The Humanoid Typhoon's reasoning anyone with (big) glasses looks like Trebol.
I called this one on 700
Not on this forum though :P
Although Diamante's character design is really great - and hopefully he'll get dubbed appropriately - I find it surprising Oda repeated this style when we already have Jango.

By the way, I found this painting and it reminded me of Shiki:
The person is wearing a Hawaiian Mahiole helmet.

I'm still waiting for Oda to draw someone based on Roberto Cofresi, the most famous pirate of my home country:

Was just kinda wondering if anyone has an idea about Lao G. Cause the costume seems kinda weirdly-specific, plus I have no idea about where his name could come from.

Those arrows of his remind me of Avatar Aang… or maybe the vectors of the diclonii from Elfen Lied (they could deflect anything as well)... or Medusa from Soul Eater, she used arrows/vectors to attack and speed herself up...

Well it's not a place where people who live in it can vote, so it may as well be.
Of course Puerto Rico's a country. Didn't you watch Animaniacs?
Not on this forum though :P
people in this forum found the resemblance between diamante and tyler at least since chapter 702,when we had his face revealed
also,it seems that in some languages like hindi, the name "hira" means "diamond",and his fruit is the hira-hira no mi.but maybe it is just a coincidence.

I know but that is unrelated to what I was talking about with Greg. Moreover, at that time some had posted the idea but no one sure right away, the discussion built up with time.

Unless we find another connection to something Hindi we won't know whether it's a coincidence.

CeeLo
Made me laugh. .
Of course the Pica-Golem-Reference is something discused very much in the spoiler and 736-chapter-thread, but what makes me wonder ist how much Pica will transform his environment and whether we will be see expressionistical-morphing buildings like on the golem-film-cover: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/Golem_1920_Poster.jpg. Given his logia ability it seems very likely.
@Monkey:

Shouldn't especially for a Japanese, who like Oda is somehow into general history, this difference be perfectly obvious? Given Rommel was a main actor in WWII?
