Lola? Bonney? Half the Baroque agents? Kureha? Raki and Aisa? The Square sisters? Chimey and Kokoro?
I think he's referring more to the nameless fodder masses never having women in them

Having female fodder would kind of be nice if only to see how Sanji would react… You could also spin it by saying that it means that women are too smart (or else too coniving) to be fodder if they're in such a profession. My mind went to Miss Catherina from the Baroque Works introduction as the closest thing to that, except that she actually has a name.
Wow, I must've worded myself really poorly.

Yes, this is what I am saying. I am not saying OP has no female characters- clearly there is no problem with women joining either the marines or pirate crews in the OP world. Yet the Marineford war only has a total of 6 women participating.

In most organizations everyone starts on fodder level, even if they are smart enough to be promoted quickly.
Miss Catherina was a nun, wasn't she? But there were some more of BW women on Whiskey Peak, though I don't think they have been shown to engage in fight.

People just don't read five posts back.
There were 7 named Women at Marineford: Hancock, Hina, Tashigi, Tsuru, Whitebay, Elmy, Brocca.
Furthermore: There was unnamed Giantess.
Furthermore: Some of Okamas with Iva either started as women or are women now, were are just not able to tell which are which.
Furthermore: We stil don't know what gender is Haruta.
Oh, I've forgotten about Catherine Devon
So you can't Say, that Marineford has total of 6 women participating, while it had at least 9 and total number is undefined.

Who the hell are Elmy and Brocca
Also, you realize that a difference from 6 to 9 Women isn't exactly monumental when we're talking tens, if not hundreds of thousands of men.
There is no "undefined" amount of women, because pick any crowd shot, and its all men fighting. There are no "random" women as pirates or marines. There are, exactly, 9 women total at marineford during that battle.
You're just arguing details for the sake of arguing. Whether its 6 or 9 or 12 women on the island would only be relevant regarding my point if there were 30 people on marineford in total. But theres thousands

Elmy and Brocca are Captains of some of the crews allied with Whitebeard. You may not have spotted them, as they are usually picture in melee with other characters.
And undefined refers to women who are not distinctive by their femininity.
Sure 6 or 9 doesn't matter when we are talking thousands, but ate the same time it's cutting number by one third, and that's a lot.
You guys just have to accept that OP world is just like our 'normal' world

In what manner. Surely not in presence of women. One Piece world has about 17% of named female characters, while our "normal"world has over 50% of named female characters.

Yeah, but a war that consist 50% of women as participant is rare….
Yeah, but a war that consist 50% of women as participant is rare….
depends, who you choose to call participant of the war. Normally there are at least some women participating in the war, because normally they freaking have to. Besides, if the army lets women to enrol, as Marines in One Piece do, normally, there would be at least some visible percentage of women on the battle field. As it was already covered in this tread million times.

Wait, what? 17%? Is it really that high?

Then it back to OP world : our world women population, ratio for job in army, etc…
I can't believe this thread became so huge…

Counting all named female character in whole franchise, by May this year, yeah, it was little over 17%.

It's big allright. But i don't think it's the title holder

Judging by our world standards, there should be between 5% percent and 15% women in the Marines. There aren't. There's less than 1% among named characters, and almost 0 fodder.
@The:
Yeah, I was specifically not referring to named characters. Solely on fodder characters, on unnamed footsoldiers. Like, out of Hody Jones 100000 man slave army? 0 women. The battle of marineford, involving god knows how many thousands pirates and marines? 7 named women, and thats it. Galley-la has no female workers. The Coliseum features hundreds of combatants, with a total of 2-named- women.
Weren't there some female gladiator fainting from seeing Cavendish?

Pretty sure they were the Colosseum employees. Could be wrong though.

That's right. There are only two female gladiators shown so far.

Out of curiosity, where did you find that statistic?

I've counted it based on One Piece Wiki, where I found list of all named characters.
Women are portrayed just fine in One Piece.
With or without filler characters?

Sounds tiring.
Did you do that for any purpose?

I've been writing about gender in children's media, ad I've decide, I may as well check what are actual numbers. I mean One Piece is really huge and it's hard to grasp everything just by impressions.
Whenever fighting is involved, there are less women. That's how it is and it's not a social construct.
Haven't you guys considered that the women in One Piece have just decided to stay home and raise a family like Bell-mere, or are actually out there doing something with their lives instead of useless fighting? You will always see way more men participate in battles than women. That's just how it is. Every named female character in the series have been important to an extent and have been decently handled. I think that they are portrayed just fine.

Studying the issue diligently, I come to the conclusion, that it's actually a social construct, regardless of what other biological influences may be involved.

If you're going to use science at least make it accurate.
So let me get this straight, to those who say that well there just isn't female fighters because because because realism or something, because because "our world", (you know there were for example lot more women knights than just Joan D'Arc even though people say there wasn't http://www.heraldica.org/topics/orders/wom-kn.htm so the things you "know" about history might not always be true) etc
You can accept people turning into animals, weapons, slime, fire, rubber, sand, wax, light, lava, gas and so on and so on. You can accept giants, merpeople, fishmen, dwarves, sea monsters, talking skeleton, talking reindeer, floating islands, civilization on the moon, people with extra joints, people turning into toys, shadow stealing creep and invisible man made of different animals, people with wings is alright too, people turning others into stone, laundry, slippery, children, old etc, people stealing others's hearts without killing them, talking bear, psycho controlling others with cloud strings, sharkman kicking people's asses with his nose, and so on and so on.
But more female fighters? No, pshhhhhhh it's not like there's many in our world so it makes sense that there isn't more female fighters in One Piece! Like, sure there isn't rubber men or people with explosive boogers in our world, but that's fine that you can accept, but more female warriors would just be too much!! Men have testosterone brains so they fight more lol!
Get out.

Agree, Oda really doesn't have a fantasy…
Then you underestimate testosterone which is secrated in far higher amounts by the male brain.
I'm not. Testosterone isn't sole basis for aggression or violence.
Besides you clearly misunderstood me. What I've said that, the way violence functions in society is socially constructed, even if some biological factor, that would make one sex more aggressive than other (mind you that sex could be females, as suggested by some evolutionary biologist). Further more, how the violence is represented is also constructed.

People are mistaken. It's not like percentage of female fighters in One Piece reflects percentage of real world female fighters. On the contrary - it's smaller.

Nah, I just meant to point out that Oda doesn't need to add more fighters, than it would be reasonable to expect in real life situations. You may say that he is creative in limiting the number :ninja:*. However I'd prefer if he made similar statistic as in real life. It would be also good if there were similar to real world statistic among non fighter characters, even in background. This actually affect the perception.
*of course, that's not creative, it's wide, but false belief.
What?! You always agree with me? That's terrible! There must be something you disagree with me!
Oh, sure. That all makes sense. I was just applauding PotentPork's efforts at pointing out some absurdly fallacious thinking.

It's because men are the expendable gender in fiction and parts of history, specifically wars where any problem was met with the solution 'throw more men at it!'.
It's like how there was that controversy over female soldiers being in the new COD because you could now shoot an stab virtual women in the face.
That's why if you want some one dimensional fodder that are there simply to be beaten up or killed by the main characters it's easier just to make them male.
Seems pretty silly really.
Look everyone:
Has Oda done good?
Or is she too pretty and so Oda is still a raging misogynist? :ninja:
I like the way women are portrayed in one piece.
They have their own pieces of mind and don't just exist because they are the love interests of the guys.

gasp How dare you think Oda is not an evil sexist! He's evil, and we need an entire thread to prove that point!

- Has an already established good back story
- Is a fishman karate teacher, so likely fights H2H.
- And just took out some guys 5 times her size with violence.
