I got back a little while ago and this was … THE BEST MOVIE I've seen so far this summer. It was so much fun. The characters were enjoyable, the story was engaging, and the combat is everything you wanted in a giant monsters vs giant robots movie. Del Toro did a great job with this. Go see this movie!
My only wish of what else I would've wanted to see is that:
! I wish we could have explored more of this world. What was going on with the countries around the Atlantic? I really wished we could've seen more of the war and more of the Jaegers. Especially Coyote Tango since he was really highlighted in the promotion material. Seeing what he and Stacker could do would've been great. At one point there were 20 Jaegers in commission, would've been nice to see some of those battles. I guess my main feeling is I want more. It was so great. I'm hoping there will be an extended version DVD where we could see more.
THAT WAS AWESOME.
Everything I wanted out of it.
Well, it being an hour longer would probably have been okay.
11 more days till it comes out. 11 more days…
I don't know if I can hold out till then...
Money well spent today really enjoyed myself. Stacker you my boy nuff said.
Go, just go and see it. IT IS AWESOME.
Was I the only one that thought of Giant Robo
! when they said the Gypsy was analog, not digital, therefore unaffected by that electronic blast from that one Kaiju in the ocean?
Great movie, really enjoyed it! Really loved the designs, especially the Striker jaeger, totally made me think of Macross.
Expecting to see epic cosplays from this movie. Also there is so much potential for animated shorts and prequels, Del Toro has never really done sequels to his movies, that I know of besides Hell Boy.
@RobbyBevard:
Everything I wanted out of it.
Although buried by the overwhelming praise of the film, I occasionally come across reviews that disliked the film calling it "it's just Transformers vs Godzilla".
Besides the fact that that's pretty much the premise of the entire movie that's obvious before they even set a foot in the theaters, I must be missing here, what exactly about "Transformers vs Godzilla" is not made of 100% awesomeness?
Sheesh next thing they'll start telling me "Jackie Chan vs Zombies" is a bad idea!
Can I ask out of Aussie Pride for those that have seen it.
! What did you think of the scene where they shot the flare guns? Because the theater I was in had people cheering and yelling "F**K YEAH" was an epic moment.
Fuck yeaaaaaaaaaaar, I loved this.
Go fucking see it!!!!
August 1st release?!! God dammit Denmark! Percy Jackson gets a simultanous release, but not this?!?! Well at least its just august, and not fucking OCTOBER like Worlds End.
Maaaaaan, I wanna see this soo bad. Now Del Toro just needs to announce Hellboy III, and my fangasming will know no bounds.
10 more days…just 10 more days.
Also.
This movie was the strangest episode ever of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Still haven't see it so don't know if this video has spoilers or not.
I think it should be here.
Get Hyped!!
It's tremendously fun.
Stay through the credits though.

Charlie will do anything to win the Waitress' heart
Easily the most entertaining movie of the summer. You can see it was made with pure joy and enjoyment, and it's easy to get immersed in this world without feeling forced into it. Heck, like others say, I'd really enjoy more entries into this world … I'd love to know of other jaegers, other teams, and so on.
It's tremendously fun.
Stay through the credits though.
Didn't stay through the credits but read the gist of what happens, and I have to say, I really love those dedications. It's a great film in which to honor them.
I got this one question after watching the film, am I the only who finds it weird that
! the aliens would bio-engineer a pregnant kaiju and send it into combat?
what exactly about "Transformers vs Godzilla" is not made of 100% awesomeness?
'Dark of the Moon' vs Godzilla 98

This thread is hilarious.
Just came back from this. Loved it. LOOOOOOVED it.
Surely a film made for all boys and overgrown boys (us).
Just arrive from the cinema. Movie is full of cliches, but with good acting, insanely action sequences and just being plain fun made it an awesome movie. People were having a blast at my screening. Go see it!! Shame that Grown Ups 2 is making more money :S.
I don't usually like 3D, but it was the only convenient option we had at the time, and I thought it was worth seeing in 3D.
Awesome movie! I felt like I wanted to jump up and down and shout YEAAAAH!! a lot of the time, but that would have been awkward since nobody else was doing it. I liked the fun, over the top characters, reminded me of watching some of my favorite 80's action/adventure movies but with top notch modern day special effects.
Ah,this movie absolutely has to be succesful. If it is,it may encourage Hollywood to tackle new franchises more, revitilize giant monsters(helping upcoming Godzilla 2014),make way for mecha to make it big and maybe also help GDT make his At The Mountains Of Madness a reality.
The opening weekend box office at 38.5 million wasn't terrible, but not great either.
Though hopefully with good word of mouth and nothing else really coming out in the next few weeks, it'll show some legs.
Also, it should absolutely kill overseas.
So, don't expect any sequels fast tracked… but given that its a new property that had lousy trailers, yet everyone seems to like it and be recommending it?
More than sequels I hope that if it does well it leads into some sort of serialized media. Like a good, animated tv show or something that can really delve into the world before the events in the movie.
Just watched it, it was SOOOO GOOD. Frickin' amazing! Especially the battle against Otachi and Leatherback, wow.

Didn't they announce sequel plans last December?
They might have, but theres a difference between plans and actual approval to go.
Saw it Thursday night. Loved it. Please see this in 3d. It was phenomenal. I wish I could say more but I'm pressed for time. But god damn I loved this and will be supporting it all the way. Sadly they are pulling it from theaters in the NY area this Thursday which is a very bad sign and only gives me 3 days to get back to the theater to see it in IMAX
Any Super Robot-style finishing blow attack in this movie?
9 days. Just 9 more days…
@All:
Any Super Robot-style finishing blow attack in this movie?
Each Jaeger have special techniques to fight the Kaijus, so yeah, without spoiling nothing, just wait for some 80`s cartoon surprises moves.

Cool. Will watch this Wednesday.
Seeing this tonight.
Am very very very excited.
8 more days. Just 8 more days…
Really fun movie; same vein as independence day except with awesome giant robot action. Loved it.
! Favorite parts were scientists, oil tanker club and mid-air sword attack

One of the major fight ends with obligatory
! point blank range BREAST FIREEEEEEEEEEEE
Saw it a couple nights ago, and I loved it. It was exactly what I expected and more.
Just came back from it.
Damn good. Liked the characters and all the battles. They shouldn't have scrapped Tacit Ronin from the script, though. Her design is delicious.
Came back from seeing this amazing movie!
It truly was the first time I've had a really fun time at a movie this summer. This will make any hardcore mecha anime fan jizz their pants and foam at the mouth.
Idris Elba and Ron Perlman easily had the best and most entertaining performances respectively.
! I'll be a little sad that Idris Elba won't be in a sequel if one ever gets the green-light. :(
! I'll be a little sad that Idris Elba won't be in a sequel if one ever gets the green-light. :(
! I'd prefer if they never touched this again and left it as it's own contained story. Everything gets pretty much wrapped up perfectly, and too many movies try to milk the idea, only to ruin it. If anything, do a prequel with some of the earlier robots like Tacit Ronin, Coyote Tango and co.
The next Pacific Rim could go 2 ways I see - Either as a prequel which would have to lead into the events of this movie. Or they could change it to pacific conflict and have it as human conflict with each other using Mechs - since now the common enemy is gone - the arms race would fuel into Mechs.

No thanks. The heart of the concept is Jaegers vs. Kaijus. You take that away, you have something completely different.
Prequel is the way to go with this. It would allow us to see all the Jaegers from the different areas, it would expand the world in terms of who are the awesome pilots and how the ones in the movie got started, and
! it would grant us the chance to see Idris Elba in full, Kaiju-killing mood. Heck, I'd pay to see a movie based on his character's origin story, ending with his promotion into the job he had in the movie
I agree with prequel movie. Need to see dat Tacit Ronin in her full glory.
It's funny how Tacit Ronin is Mk.I despite looking most high tech of them all.
I managed to see the movie last night at a special screening a few days earlier.
Here are my thoughts on it.
! Pacific Rim: I'd been looking forward to this movie for quite a while. More so than usual because of the string of disappointing blockbusters. This movie was like the light of the end of long, dark, depressing tunnel. A love letter to all my childhood fantasies, an orgasm of explosive action and excitement, a concentration of everything \i always wanted to see in a movie, at least that's what I was hoping for. So how was thie movie?
! It was okay. Just okay.
! I hate to sound like this. "Oh, you just don't like anything, you went in with too high expectations." Honestly I didn't I didn't go in wanting complex characters or a great story. I just wanted two hours of giant robots beating the shit out of giant monsters. That's all I wanted. However on the level of a pure spectacle film, of just brainless entertainment…it wasn't that good.
! Let's get the good stuff out of the way first. The movie is gorgeous, beautifully shot, directed with fantastic effects. The effects alone make the movie worth a watch. The fights were well choreographed, easy to follow and very epic. They were easily the best part of the movie because they were the moments I was most invested in the movie. The problem was there was nowhere near enough of them and too much of everything else.
! The main problem with the movie is the characters are so unmemorable and boring. They're just one dimensional cardboard cutouts that are cartoonishly stereotypical. And I know what you're going to say "Ugh look at this guy, expecting deep, three dimensional characters in a Godzilla movie." Their existence isn't my problem. One dimensional characters are fine in my popcorn flick. It's like those cheesy 80's action flicks. Fun cheesy over the top stereotypes for my monster movie. The problem is that the movie spends waaaaay too much time focusing on these uninteresting characters. After the first fight in the beginning, we don't get any monster fighting at all until the second act of the movie, after like 40 to 60 minutes of movie. And trust me, you feel every second of it because the difference in quality between when the movie is focusing on the battles and on the characters is that big. Some could say that it's building up the hype for the battles but the buildup just isn't interesting at all. I mean it'd be one thing if the characters were played for laughs, those over the top characters that are just fun to watch, but the movie is trying to play these stereotypical characters straight and it just comes off as every boring generic action movie drama cliche all condensed into forty minutes of movie. And the beautiful cinematography could only hold me so far before I got bored by it all. I will say there are two saving characters, two shining beacons of awesome in this movie. Idris Elba and Ron Perlman. Two incredible actors giving some of the best performances I've ever seen in a movie. In a desert of unending blandness, they were my oases.
! In terms of the spectacle, the movie left a lot to be desired. There was only one action piece that lived up to the level of pure awesomeness that the movie promised. It was the first battle after the forty minutes of nothing happening where the Jaegers fight against two level 4 Kaiju. And it was amazing. Visually dazzling, well choreographed, creative, everything I wanted from the film. But that was only 20 minutes from a two hour movie. There are other fights of course but nowhere near as good and it's not just because the fight raised the bar so far but because the other fights were just underwhelming in terms of creative fight choreography. Mostly just punch, punch and one slash and the monster is dead. A level 5 Kaiju shows up at the end but for all the difficulty and creative fighting ability it exhibited, it might as well have been a level 3. The Jaegers themselves really needed more of an identity. The Kaiju were varied well enough but the Jaegers didn't really show that much of a variety in ability. There was some small differences here and there mentioned but their capabilities were never really put to full use. All the Jaegers themselves were criminally underused apart from the American one. With such a great premise and such a great director with clear love and passion for the genre, it was just nowhere near as good as it could have been.
! This movie could have been one of the greats. One of those legendary movies that would raise the bar for all movies of its genre to live up to. As it was, it was just eh. It's reflecting as much in the box office since it's already floundering. And honestly, I think it deserves too and it pains me to say it. There's a lot of love and passion and heart in this movie, that much is clear. But something went wrong in the movie making process where it was decided that they would play the movie straight. And because of that, what could have been a fantastic movie was bogged down by a lot of generic, boring cliche drama. And it's just such a shame to see such great potential squandered like that. This movie really was a missed opportunity.
t;/dr It was okay but nowhere near as good as it could have been. Too much cliched boring character drama.
Well, i liked it! Ending was cliche' though.
