Gear second is so awkward to say in English. what's the point of disregarding grammar just to follow the Japanese way to a t?
Either "gear two" or "second gear" and I prefer the latter.

It really doesn't bother me. I knew long ago that 'second gear' was likely and when I said it to myself it makes sense and sounds good.
Doesn't matter what it's called. I wanna see that shit in action!

For whatever reason I think it still sounds better to say 'Gear Second'. Maybe that's just because I'm used to the sub. But whenever I heard Luffy say it the first time it didn't strike me as being grammatically incorrect or anything. I just presumed that was what Oda intended and went with it. When Luffy says 'Gear Second', it sounds natural to me because he's announcing his transformation or power up, and that's what he calls it. Because it's not something you would normally hear, it doesn't seem weird for him to randomly say it. I think it sounds stranger to hear Luffy randomly say 'Second Gear' because it's a proper term you hear in regular conversation, and it's without any proper context you're used to hearing it in.
Also, you really don't know whether Oda's naming scheme was made in error because he doesn't know the language, or if he did know the proper order of the words and chose to reverse them anyway–which would be an artistic decision rather than a linguistic mistake. And assuming it was Oda's informed (rather than uninformed) decision like I always have, then FUNi is changing what the author intended rather than correcting his mistake like some here believe they are.
FUNi probably made this decision on their own, but they might have also done it to conform to VIZ's translation. Since the manga translators are only working with text, they might have assumed reversing the order of 'Gear Second' was the proper way to do things--without knowing that it was spoken in English that way in the anime. The fact that it was Gear Second in the Wii game also supports this, since the manga hadn't gotten that far in the States at the time. Toei and Shueisha want as much consistency between their localizations as possible too. That's further evidence that FUNi changed the naming scheme for reasons other than making it 'grammatically correct'.
Anyway, that's just my take on the situation. I might be wrong, and it's really not a big deal. But if I had my way, it would be 'Gear Second'. It doesn't alienate any of the fans, it's what you hear in the original, and it probably makes things easier on the dubbing.
Viz uses "Gear Two". If Funi wanted to conform to the manga, then they would have used that instead.
But it's most likely conforming to Toei Animation and the official simulcast subs than with Shueisha.
Oh, my bad. I remembered it wrong for some reason. Probably read it that way in the simulcasts. Well, I do think 'Second Gear' is better than 'Gear Two'.
By the way, my super-long rant about the name shouldn't be indicative of how many craps I give about it. It's really not a big deal at all, I just had nothing better to do haha.
It could work in English if it was arranged as "Gear: Second", kind of like reading off a checklist.

Pretty sure in just about every battle in the anime luffy takes a brief pause between words, example: gear….......second. so yes it might have worked.
'twas a joke, good sir.
Oops.. sorry about that xp.
Anyways, the whole Second Gear thing isn't a big deal to me. It was probably changed because it was one of the name changes that Funimation couldn't reverse from "Toei's List" (the one that "Mato", a Funimation translator that used to post here, talked about with us a long time ago) along with Sniperking and others.
Actually, I kind of like the change since it sound more natural in English. Too bad others won't….
Well they reversed the names of the Devil Fruit models as well. "Cat-Cat Fruit Model Leopard" was "Leopard Model" in the recent episodes right? I know it was changed to that in the manga.
Ok, so I know this is old news…But oh my god. I'm watching the Whiskey Peak arc dubbed for the first time, and I swear Mr. 5 sounds just like Robert Downey Jr's black guy impression from Tropic Thunder. Seriously?
Oddly specific thing to pick out.
Well, I never watched the One Piece dub all the way through because I didn't pick up all the DVDs so this is really my first time hearing it. lol. I just had to say something about it.
Japanese is read right-to-left. So when an English phrase like GS/SG is used like that they're going to be reversed. Calling it Gear Second would be like a Japanese guy coming here and calling someone "Smith John". Like it our not it's the correct literal syntax.

That's… not really how it works. By that logic FUNi should be calling the Straw Hats' ship the "Merry Going", or saying that they are crossing the "Line Grand".
Just picked up Voyage 5 from Walmart for only $20. Never seen One Piece around my area before. I was astonished. And for that price too? Hell yeah.
Yeah, I just got back from Wal Mart, I also saw One Piece Season 4, Part 5 there as well for 19.99. I already got my set from Amazon, a couple days ago. I was really impressed by Sonny's performance as Sniper King throughout the set.
Colleen just said on the live stream that she just finished dubbing a 15 episode fight…that can really only be Lucci yes? She said they were in Water 7, so she must mean BACK in Water 7.
Damn, you beat me to it. But yeah, it's nice to know that they're done with Enies Lobby.
I guess they are almost on the final arc they have to dub now. Till they get more episodes announced at Otakon :P

They got it into Walmart! That's awesome! Expect a surge in popularity due to toonami. That's probably how they got it in. Good price, too. So excited to see it in more stores!

Great to hear! Thanks for telling us. Man, I can't wait to see it.

Two things.
I saw the OP S4V5 set at Walmart too, much to my surprise! Why the hell couldn't they carry the other sets?! >< $20…and you can buy it right then and there is the best thing ever for buying an OP set! Oh well, at least I can get the final set for a good price. ^^
And man, I'm enjoying that livestream! But I doubt Scott will be able to reach 206 now. He's barely in the middle of Loguetown. He still needs Apis, Laboon, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, Drum, Alabasta, Post-Alabasta, Jaya, Skypiea, and G-8! I estimate that if he keeps on watching OP straight for the day, he'll maybe be at maybe around Little Garden or Drum. Even if he's able to make it to Alabasta before the day ends, Jaya/Skypiea will be a monster of an arc to get through. I'm really looking forward to how he reacts to Chopper's flashback, Alabasta/Skypiea fights, and the Noland flashback mainly.
Two things.
- they have the filler arc AND the ice hunter arc left.
- They announced season five on July 28th of last year. Im betting they announce season six at the same time. I suspect they've had it since last July, though. Is that Otakon?
When saying filler arc, Zephray's most likely referring to the post-Enies Lobby filler episodes. While I'm still sure they have Season 6 like the leak said, I wouldn't be too surprised if they waited just a bit longer to announce it though. Them announcing Season 5 that early probably could've been an exception since it was part 2 to a Season 4 storyline.
I think we might get some news at A-Kon or Anime Expo.

Yeah. Sorry. Didn't clarify enough.
I expect to hear season six news before voyage three at the latest, but probably in July.
I don't know if you guys have seen the cast listing for the new Lupin series which credits both Michelle Ruff (Fujiko) & Richard Epcar (Zenigata), both of which are great LA actors. Do you guys think this could open up further casting choices later down the road for more LA talent to be in OP?
I've personally been gunning for Michelle to Play Boa Hancock. I'd die a happy camper if that happened :swanson:
ps: Hoping Joel McDonald plays Kuma
The brand manager for the series was on that One Piece Marathon on Youtube and said that Strong World is coming out in November, I thought the earliest was going to be December honestly. So excited! That means we should get season 5 voyage 3 and Strong World the same month!

Coming out in theaters or on Bluray?
What other voices are in this? Kuma? Garp? Anyone else we haven't heard yet? Besides brook.

I don't know if he confirmed any of that, I'm guessing we will probably get news and screenings and panels either at Otakon or New York Comic Con, which are usually where FUNi promotes big events.
I asked him about Brook and he said that they're very close to casting him, with Mike trying his hardest to make sure to pick the best of the best, so seems he's close to making his final decision from the auditions.

Checking the OP Wiki… nobody really. Sengoku and Garp show up but they were already cast.
At first I thought they would recast Garp but I checked his voice actor and he plays Mansam on Toriko, so he can easily do fun Garp.
I have faith that Mike will pick the best VA for Brook.
But I guess the final decision is up to Toei and Oda.
Brook might be one of the hardest to cast thus far.
i think sean shemmel
Ah, no….nowadays the only role he has with FUNI is Goku.
And personally, his voice wouldn't fit at all.
I love Sean as Goku, but noooooooo. Jerry Jewel would be better. That's who I'm rooting for. Or maybe he will be a complete unknown.
Jerry Jewel and Vic Mignogna have been fan favorites since forever (well actually, since everyone thought we would be getting "Unlimited Cruise" because FUNi got "Adventure"), I think both of them would be able to pull it off.
Vic apparently really wants to play Brook though:
The thing with my want of Jerry is that I feel Jerry has more of the aged feel to him. While Brook is a singing skeleton, he was over 50 when he died, and Vic just sounds too young to me. I think both of them can bring the spirit and are very good, but personally, Jerry fits the voice in my head better.
been searching & OMG how well Vic Mignogna would suit Moria..
I happened to see that last week. Close, but a bit too high for my tastes. He could probably make it a bit lower, though. I was thinking that pride/flask from fullmetal brotherhood would be moria. Not sure of that voice actor's name.
It may take some time for us to get used to the change, but it will happen in time. We're just too used to hearing it in Japanese.

Pride's VA is a woman, Brittney Karbowski.
Father's VA is Kent Williams. I don't know how well he would do as Brook.
The woman who did Kablauttermann this season. The flask. Not Father.

Yeah. I wasn't too fond of the Japanese version when he came into the picture, either. Someone stated that Brook might be the toughest to cast. I think they're right, probably.
Funny thing about Moria is that most of us, me included, thought the voice was terrible when we first heard it. At least for me, by the end of the arc I thought the voice suited him well. I'm sure FUNi will do a good job whatever they go with, and I'm sure they'll keep his laugh as well since they've been doing that lately.
Chris Sabat dropped by the stream he answered my question about "What's your favorite Zoro moment, and how do you want to see Zoro develop?"
He said he like the current stuff, but for the development he said "Zoro gets a new weapon". not sure if that means they're secretly doing Triller Bark, or he just know he'll need a new sword.

Does he mean Sniper King?
