One of the great visionaries from the early days of film passed away today.
Though most people wouldn't recognize his name now, Ray Harryhausen had his hand–literally--in the creation of many of the most creative and visually impressive fantasy/sci-fi epics of the 1950s to the 1980s. I watched pretty much every single one of his movies when I was a kid, and though they don't hold up as well as other classics, the visuals are still the stuff of magic.
Some of my favorite scenes:
Medusa from Clash of the Titans:
!
Skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts:
!
The Beast from The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
!
The Cyclops from Sinbad:
!
Thanks for the memories.
