@Sheep:
yeah that makes no sense
I mean, even If you believe in some stereotypical portrayal that any cop could just come barging in in your house and arrest you, how exactly would a friggin' gun help, especially considering that cop killers always get extra attention.
Heck, even if the Obama administration turns out to be some underground evil satanic communist empire, how is your little shitty gun going to stop the attempt or your government enslaving you, who commands an army with the most modern and deadly war technology
This is more or less what I would say on the topic, I think. I mean, even putting aside the fact that the entire premise is based on unrealistic, paranoid, conspiracy theorist thinking in the extreme – even if the government really were to 'come after you' -- how exactly would the fantasy play out, from there? Like Sheep says, it simply doesn't make sense on any level.
It's not even as though there aren't perfectly valid arguments to be made on both sides of the debate. The concept of needing to defend yourself against the big, scary government with your gun simply isn't one of them, and only serves to make you, and by extension your stance on the issue, appear foolish.
I will say that it is rather apt that this should come up, though, considering I was just earlier watching a Daily Show clip in which Jon Stewart was mocking the NRA convention. At one point, he pointed out the inherent hypocrisy of one of their messages, which boiled down to: "Don't let the government use things like the recent school shootings to scare you into accepting more gun control. Instead, let us use things like crafting a governmental boogie-man to scare you into opposing more gun control!"
