I'm about to get real. It's gonna be ugly; I'm gonna lose so much respect. Some of you might never trust my opinion on anything ever again. But that's okay, I have to say this, and now is the time.
I like Fall Out Boy.
I know I shouldn't. I know they're terrible, but they're albums have always been guilty pleasures of mine. I was hoping that might change with their most recent album. I wasn't a big fan of the single, so I wasn't even gonna check it out. But then I saw it get a B+ from the AV Club, so I had to give it a listen. Sadly it's the same damn thing. I know I shouldn't like it, but I just can't help it. It's loud, obnoxious, has some really bad lyrics, but it's catchy. It just sounds like a bunch of guys having fun. They're not trying to make a masterpiece, they're…
Shit, now I'm trying to defend it.
Nope, not gonna do it.
On the flipside, there's a certain band I like that most people call a guilty pleasure, but I legitimately like them. I'm also probably gonna lose points for this, but here we go.
I like My Chemical Romance.
Let me clarify. Their first two albums are garbage. However, I think that "The Black parade" is highly underrated, and it gets a lot of crap from people who were already turned off by their sound. I was one of them, then a friend and I were on a road trip. It was his car, so he made me listen to the whole thing, and I was won over halfway through. I like it unashamedly. It's a great concept album.
They're follow up was just as fantastic. Though it was much more pop-punk, it was a fun album that wasn't trying to do much. And I loved it.
To put it simply, I would blast My Chemical Romance in my car; Fall Out Boy is headphones only.
The question I pose to you, if you have enough gall to admit it, is in two parts:
- What is a legitimate guilty pleasure for you?
- What is something others consider a guilty pleasure, but you honestly like?
