Looking at the 2011 numbers, looks like 250k+ population cities with the highest homicide rate per capita (per 100k) is:
New Orleans - 57.6
Detroit - 48.2
St Louis - 35.3
Newark - 33.8Detroit crime rates are really high in general too.
Well I guess I know at least one place I'd never live in.
What I'd be interested in, though, assuming these numbers aren't already, is to see them adjusted for involvement in crime. That is, I wonder how many of those homicides were of people themselves involved in gang activity, or the drug trade, or anything of that sort, compared to how many were of people that were completely innocent.
I was listening to an interesting thing on gun violence in the U.S. the other day, although I'd have to see if I could find it again, but evidently the data shows that gun related deaths of 'innocents' are actually, relatively speaking, extremely rare. Like, obviously they're horrible when they happen, and the various big shootings that crop up rightly get everyone up in arms (no pun intended) over the issue; but just looking purely at the numbers, people's attention would be better spent on any number of issues, like drunk driving or what have you.
Not to say I personally don't think the nation has a problem with gun control, or that people shouldn't try to fix it, but I do think it's interesting to have issues be sort of objectively put into perspective like that.
