I suck at lists. I literally spent years deciding on my top ten favorite movies (I still haven't made up my mind on top ten favorite manga and don't even ask me about top ten TV shows or songs). I'm just so fickle and easily swayed by a good movie that it makes me constantly rearrange my list. However there are certain movies that just…stick in my brain no matter what, those that truly left an impression on me to the point that no matter how long I've seen them, I still get that warm fuzzy feeling whenever I think of certain scenes in the movie. And thus I have decided that it is these types of movies that truly deserve to be on a list. Of course there might be subtle differences between how people might choose their favorite movies for their lists and if you feel like talking about that a little, feel free.
But primarily this is a movie about making a list of your top ten movies. Three things I want to say. One, don't be ashamed to list any movie regardless of genre. Your favorite movie doesn't have to be Citizen Kane or Godfather or some epic classic masterpiece. This is the top ten favorite movies not best. The movies that you feel are technically superior are different from the movies that you just love and just move you somehow be it due to their comedy, intriguing story or just the simplicity of the story coupled with some heart-pounding action. I'll say it flat out now, my top ten list has several pure action movies (including my number one) and there's no shame in that. I really don't agree with that sort of elitism. The movie you like is the movie you like, you can't control how you feel about a movie. And it varies for people because beyond the mental appreciation, when you watch a movie there is a sort of resonance in the soul (I'm serious), where the movie just really gets you somehow and this is really dependent on the type of person you are. For example someone who was raised in a very warm-loving, loves their family environment might be partial to Rain Man for instance. Two, you can give reasons for your choices if you want but it's not necessary. You like what you like, you don't need to defend any choice you make. Three, if you want to post here but can only think up to less than ten movies or can think up to more than ten, that's fine. Feel free to post how many you want. Or if you want to have some ties here and there or if you can't really make up your mind on which movie better than the other, just post a tentative list. The thing about lists is that they can be pretty amorphous dependent on mood where one day you like this movie better and the other day you like the other one better. Making a list of it is just fun but you don't need to be too strict on it.
Anyway, after all that drawling and without further ado, I'll give my top ten favorite movies.
1. Avengers
2. Letters from Iwo Jima
3. Hot Fuzz
4. Die Hard
5. Kingdom of Heaven (the director's cut)
6. Casino Royale
7. Fellowship of the Ring
8. Schindler's List
9. Gandhi
10. Chicago
And that's my list. What's yours?
