So the nominations are out. Pretty expected nominations. My money's on Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty though I wish Django would win it. Tarantino's been snubbed too often by the Academy. Also Daniel Day Lewis and Christoph Waltz will get their umpteenth Oscars.
Oscars 2013
-
-
I have a feeling that Silver Linings Playbook is going to do very well at the Oscars. From what I heard from people that have seen it, its a very great movie.
-
I hope Django Unchained wins best picture but I don't think that's likely. I'm thinking it'll be either Lincoln or Zero Dark Thirty since they seem like Oscar-bait. I don't know very much about the other ones.
-
I also hope Django Unchained wins some stuff as well.
-
Do they always nominates the later movies of the year?
UPDATE:
Lol, Skyfall got nothing. -
Right now, I'm betting that Argo will win (Ebert named it the best film of 2012). But I'd say Beasts of Southern Wild, Life of Pi, and Lincoln also have good chances. Tarnatino, I'm sure, will get snubbed as always.
Lol, Skyfall got nothing.
That is bullcrap.
-
Kinda sad that a Pixar movie hasn't also gotten a best picture nom.
Also, Skyfall wasn't that good guys. The cinematography was gorgeous (and it rightfully got a nom for that) but the story needed work. Casino Royale was much better.
-
I was thinking that Beasts of the Southern Wild was more likely than Lincoln is at winning best picture, lol, as are a few other films up there. Not that they will win.
I'm just saying it's the filler period piece drama film, the same way Les Miserables is. The only thing it's there for is being a placeholder to round out the films. The only times those win are when it's like The King's Speech which was very slyly put together, some might say~ manipulative ~ at warming hearts while being centered in historical tales of triumph.
Lincoln is based on a nonfiction book

There's stuff like Last Emperor, but the stylistically the scope and effort that nabbed them Best Picture is of a different brand than Lincoln.
Oscars are basically just a game at trying to figure out what old out of touch dudes want people to see, or what they like. You get some twists sometimes, but they are otherwise kind of predictable as far as odds go?
-
Dunno about that. Never even heard of Beasts before its nomination whilst Lincoln's got all the hype and star power. Zero Dark Thirty's also got a good shot being so topical and all though Katheryn Bigolow winning a couple of years ago with the same type of film might hurt its chances. The Academy likes to pass around its Oscars.
-
I was still being indecisive about my post and editing the wording, I made it more clear what I meant.
-
Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow being snubbed for best Director is ridiculous.
-
My money and my heart are set on Argo.
I found it a seriously gripping film and riveting and honestly it's a bit appalling Ben Affleck (who has come REAL DAMN far) got snubbed hardcore for the Best Director nod as a lot of those other names really don't need to be up there, let's be frank. Unfortunately though I haven't seen a bunch of the others on this list, and will be raiding the theaters to get caught up on the Best Picture nominations.

Oh I know all about how the game works. It's why movies like Avengers will never get a nod (even though it was one of the best films of the year), it's too low brow and kiddie for those doddery old men.
Honestly, I haven't seen Lincoln yet (it won't be released in my country for another three weeks) even though it was one of my most anticipated movies of the year but from what I've heard, it's in the same vein as King's Speech. Daniel Day Lewis already elevates it above stuffy drama because you know he's going to inject a lot of humanity and genuine emotions to it. But I guess this isn't something I can know for sure until I see it.

Same here unfortunately. I haven't seen a single one on the best picture list though half of them I've been anticipating all year. Blame delayed release dates. Except Argo which has come and gone. I had written it off because Ben Affleck is or apparently was a pretty awful actor. But apparently I made a huge mistake? Eh, it'll come out in my local theater which shows 3 month old movies for half the ticket price pretty soon so I'll definitely check it out when it does.
-
Argo. Best film of 2012 for me.
I was quite surprised to see Hobbit receiving 3 nominations as well.

Totally agree. I have seen most of the best picture movies and Argo is still tops in my book

Well, we can't very well say that Brave deserves it.
Also, Skyfall wasn't that good guys. The cinematography was gorgeous (and it rightfully got a nom for that) but the story needed work. Casino Royale was much better.
Oh, I thought it hadn't gotten any nominations at all. Yeah, it definitely deserves the best cinematography nomination. Not getting best picture nom? hmm, yeah, I can accept that.
-
I hope amour wins! Austrian film power ftw!!!
-
I'm just glad TDKR didn't get any nominations.
-

Whilst Avengers at least got a nom albeit for special effects.
-

French language movie ftw. More seriously, it will most likely win the best picture in foreign language + probably one other award but that's all. It's already a great achievement for a movie in a foreign language to be nominated in the best picture category.
I still haven't seen half of those… as usual.
-
I've seen Argo, Les Mis, and Django.
I really want to see Life of Pi (in 3D), Lincoln (if only to reconcile conflicting things I've been told),
and especially Silver Linings Playbook (thank you Miss Lawrence). I'm mad I missed out on Beasts, but I'll definitely have seen all these by February.Have heard Amour is Oscar bait, not sure if that's for good or for ill but I won't be knocking down doors to see it unless convinced otherwise.
-
I´m surprised that Karenina is not among the nominations. Even though i have not seen it yet, i thought that a Tolstoy adaption with good actors and Joe Wright on the director´s seat would definitely reap an award or two. Otherwise, Django, Lincoln and Argo are no surprises but i hope for Life of Pi to win the award.

Haha sorry if it came off as a tutorial of pretension
uhhh one thing to me, worth thinking about, is that Argo is a pretty fine blend between "pop cinema" and very tightly put together and above-all-standards kind of thriller.
I think there's a good shot that Argo can be an out of nowhere winner, when everybody is expecting a more "serious"ly made movie to win it.
But the same can be said of Beasts of the Southern Wild (which can be replaced to be ~artsy~ instead of thriller).
But Argo I'm kiiiind of willing to bet on. The past few things winning Oscars have been lighter than people are conditioned to expect of the Oscars so it's a pretty good chance. Like The Artist was
I've had a kind of succesful prediction streak for the Oscars, guessing every Best Picture winner and a few of the other awards, going back as far as uhhh whatever was two years after Brokeback Mountain didn't win (I made out super fucking well last year when The Artist one and I was betting real money on the biggest six awards).
But this is the first year I'm very genuinely perplexed at what it'll be so absolutely no money bets and I'm pretty sure my luck is out and I'm pretty sure I'll be wrong. It was a good series of coincidences while it lasted :')
My bet though? Argo or Zero Dark Thirty. I can't decide which. Also if Django Unchained won that'd be crazy unexpected but at the same time not out of nowhere, since they do have a history of eventually giving in and awarding a really good movie Best Picture as a kind of "catch all" for a director's career. Or maybe they did that once. I don't really remember i don't actually like watching the Oscars
! Just watch Silver Lining Playbook win and everybody going "what the… fuck is this"
EDIT: ACTUALLY I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE FUCK I DON'T KNOW
I don't care enough about oscars to put this much thought into it maybe Lincoln could do fine
-
Hope that 9 year old wins Best Actress.
-
Saw Argo today and loved every minute of it. The intensity, the drama…..Ben Affeck really shined in it. Also really liked Alan Arkin's and Bryan Cranston's performances.
I'm gunning for it or Lincoln, which I'll hopefully see next week.
-
@The:

God yes
Do you mean the girl from beasts of the southern wild? That'd be so excellent if she did. I didn't even think about that angle. Usually for movies supported heavily by one actor or actress the movie will just be a shoe-in for that award and I think that's where Beasts of the Southern Wild will represent, instead of anything like Best Picture.
I kind of think that's the most likely chance, best actress.

Quentin Tarantino will never win. He's too action movey for their tastes. They couldn't even give him best writing for Basterds even though it clearly deserved it more than Hurt Locker.

Yeah. I haven't seen the movie, but, just the idea of someone so young winning a Oscar over 'bigger names' makes me happy.

But she's a child! Poppycock, I say. No rapscallion shall usurp the trophy for the noble and distinguished title of "actor"! How unorthodox! Too unorthdox!!
-
Wow, I've only seen Life of Pi. But I'm definitely going to see Django when it comes out here, and Les Misérables probably too.
Maybe I've just been too uninvolved with movies this year, but it looks like a very meager list, this one. -
I haven't seen any of the films, but I seen the trailers for them. For I'm really interest in Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained, and the Life of Pi.
-
Well, at least Skyfall got nominated for the one it truly deserved, Cinematography. That's honestly everything I cared for. I actually haven't seen most of the other movies.
-

Eh, I still kinda with Javier Bardem had been nominated for Supporting Actor, but seeing as how he already won it for No Country for Old Men, I'll let it go.
Man, I've only seen two of the movies on that list. I desperately want to see Argo.
And despite my efforts to stay up to date on movies, I'd never heard of Silver Linings Playbook till today (I know the rest of them).
-
Btw, just saw Django and i recognized one of the soundtracks immediately but i just could not remember from where until i saw Red Dead Revolver on my shelf
Seems like RDR borrowed the melody from an old song, did not know that though
I think DDL for best actor is the most likely choice, i also would be happy if the 9 year old Wallis won the award, especially considering that the other besides Riva did not blew me away with their performances. Ang Lee should get his second "Best Director" award, he really deserves it.
-
Django Unchained was a fantastic film (probably one of the best in this year for me), but the film didn't scream "Best Picture of the Year" for me especially with some of the weird effects in the movie (which I attribute mostly to Tarantino being Tarantino). In spite of that, I would love to see Christoph Waltz win Actor (Supporting role) but he is up against really difficult supporting actors. I think Django has a very slim chance in Cinematography as well. Sound Editing and Writing seems like the categories where Django might win anything for the Oscars. However, I am appalled that Django did not show up in Music (either Original score or song) which happened to be one of its stronger areas.
Looking at the "Animated Feature Film" category…um yeah, I really don't know what to say about that category. A part of me wants to think Brave will win SIMPLY because it is Pixar, but I really despise the movie and there is no real contender in that category.
-

Yeah, he really should have. But if I had to choose between Cinematography and Supporting Actor, I'd easily go with the former. I feel like Judi Dench should have been nominated for Supporting Actress as well. And also, Thomas Newman better not win Best Score. David Arnold's work in the franchise has been so much better.
-
@Thousand:

Yeaaaah…a lot involving Hurt Locker that year was bullshit in my opinion.
-
Lincoln miiiight just get Day Lewis his third Oscar, (which people were saying about 3 seconds after the first photo was realeased) which I think is unprecedented, (and also might be snubbed because of that) but beyond that, I don't forsee it actually winning.
Too many people wanted it to be Lincoln's life, and not just the last couple months, and complaints baout needing to now the history etc. for it to actually win.
Les Mis might get some of the audio stuff, but too many people disliked the acted singing for it to win. (Had it just been the pre-recorded operatic singing people were expecting it might do better.) Hatthaway has a shot at supporting actress purely from the four minutes of 'I Dreamed a Dream' being easily remembered though.
Beyond that, I have no idea.
We all know Avengers is the true winner anyway.
-
Hurt Locker was a good movie but it did NOT deserve to sweep the Oscars.
-
I've seen Life of Pi, Argo, and Lincoln.
Of the three, I'd prefer Lincoln to win if only because it was such a wonderful depiction of a man who had to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, but still managed to do it with a sense of (hilariously vulgar) humor and the realization that the country had to move forward. The film itself reflected that.
-
@RobbyBevard:

It was the funnest movie that made the most money and will have follow ups and sequels. Its not the most serious movie, no, but it was one of the most heavily enjoyed.
And ILM makes a good case for winning best visuals at least.
I had no clue how much of that was CGI… which means they did their job right.
-

I guess our tastes just differ then. Avengers was a fun movie but for me, definitely not a title remarkable and memorable enough to deserve the title "Best Film of the Year" and i am saying that completely independent from the Oscar criteria with which in most cases i disagree with anyway.
-
No other movies this year I saw at the theatre twice with two different groups of friends and bought on dvd.
-
I voted Argo, though I didn't like how they overdid the ending.
My real favorite was Moonrise Kingdom, so I hope that wins original screenplay, but who knows.
-
At least Avengers got nominated for the right category (visual effects). If it showed up in any other category, it would not have been very fitting. On the other hand, I think it would have been great on "Animated Feature Film". It essentially had enough CG in it to label the film as "Animation" lol…(in that case, why didn't Avatar win best Animated Feature Film? Hm, wierd).
-
I really want Django Unchained to win; however, in the poll I voted for the movie I believe will most likely get the Oscar
-
Avengers was not only my favorite movie of the year but favorite movie of all time. It's not Citizen Kane to be sure, who cares? I never had more fun watching a movie. Movie don't need to and shouldn't be compared to some sort of standard of high brow seriousness. Judge them by how well they accomplished what they set out to be and then pick the one that gave you the best time be it viscerally or mentally. My second favorite movie of all time is Letters from Iwo Jima, take from that what you will.

I saw that movie today coincidentally. I liked it but it was a bit too bizarre for my tastes to make me really love it.

A shame it had to go against The Hobbit of all things or it might have had a chance.
-
Avengers' visual effects got snubbed pretty hard at the Golden Globes, especially considering TDKR and ASM did get nominations for that category.
-
@Thousand:

A lot of Hobbit's CGI is really obvious though. Yes, theres a lot of it and they built a world… but some of it stands out to the point where its distracting.
