Yeah if he didn't kill Pell and Bon Clay, then there is no way in hell he would kill a child
Chapter 688: Mocha
-
-
Yeah if he didn't kill Pell and Bon Clay, then there is no way in hell he would kill a child
With my life at stake - Sabo.
-
Technically Oda did kill kids (off screen), but definitely not real time (and especially named ones). Sabo was killed in a flash back so there, HAHA! (Though I am pretty confident he is alive)
-
Yeah if he didn't kill Pell and Bon Clay, then there is no way in hell he would kill a child
Kuina.
With my life at stake - Sabo.
Don't start.
-
Seems like this has been a love it or hate it chapter on other forums as well. The bickering from both sides is pretty damn entertaining to say the least. I feel like people just want the arc to just get to the end already so we can finish all the loose ends, see where everyone stands, and move on.
@xyz:
!
Are you the same person in the video?
LMAO that was great. He can't lump Cipher Pol Nine in with the war though. No one even talks about the CP9 storyline anymore. I get his feelings about those sorta fans though.
-
With my life at stake - Sabo.
Oh, we're doing this again? Let's see, how about we start with the obvious evidence…
-
Ok chapter. The fear of not being able to grown into an adult is indeed sad and depressing.
Sanji is literally the boss.
The Zoro Tashigi bit was so cute and hilarious. I can't wait to see Sanji's reaction when he sees them together. Her interaction with the Zoro and Sanji makes me want her to be temporary NN.
From the looks of things, this arc seems to be headed towards a positive conclusion but Baby 5 and Bufallo's arrival could change everything. -
Nope. Can't see Oda pulling this off. Ever…Unless he REALLY wants to do something with Chopper's character.
I would welcome any chance to further develop Chopper.
But still…..it's a kid dying, and due to drug overdose. I think it's a little dark for Oda's lighthearted style, but I can't see Mocha not suffer any consequences from stuffiing all those candies down her gullet.
-
What's with the unnecessary flashbacks this arcs…. first we had Mononuske eating the fruit when it was stated previously and was clear and now we have an explanation that the kids are friends and that the candy is poison...
the chapter is ok, but the pacing was slow
-
now i just thought of something….
wasnt there less complain and bitchin before from other people because most (im one of those) guys here read/watch one piece when the series was already long released????
i mean, yeah...its like you started reading one piece (from chapter 1) when the series is presently (lets say) at the thriller bark arc, so you can read it continously... then when you read up all the chapters up to the fishman arc, you only get 1 chapter per week,,...and youre used to continously reading one piece.
coz that would explain all the people always complaining about the breaks and story dragging...its been like this from the start....unless what i said above is true...
What's funny is I'm one of those who hopped on just right after Marineford, in the aftermath of it, and I couldn't really give a damn about fights lol. I care about character development when it happens (Luffy VS Usopp was wonderful); the new locations we'll go to; character designs; dialogue (this is the reason right here why Doflamingo will be the best villain: his dialogue is simply immaculate); the history behind the One Piece world or islands being explained; touching little stories (I loved the hell out of Shushu the dog waaaay back at the beginning of OP, so I liked this kid-devoted chapter as well); opposing ideals colliding and causing friction upon the world in interesting ways; the comedy (Duval's face…); and all of the mystery behind it all.
Hell that's probably not me listing half, but I have classes to go to. Anyway, so yeah, people who hopped on because of Marineford or CP9 are missing out on a lot of aspects of the series which are what truly put it ahead.
A fun experiment would be to read a book with one page instead of reading it in 50's, 100's of pages at once. Just one page of a book a week. Will it hold up? Only if it's something like Gravity's Rainbow or Game of Thrones.
Just want intense action with smart battle tactics and a witty power system? Go read Hunter X Hunter. ...then watch them complain when certain characters in Hunter X Hunter don't fight each other lol.
-

Momonosuke's flashback showed off his character and also explained how he got the DF (and we didn't know about artificial fruits beforehand). And the flashback this chapter was clearly to build up emotion.
-
Kuina.
Ah yes, how can I forget. But with Kuina, we didn't see her fall down the stairs directly, and she was covered after that.
Here…..we saw Mocha eat the candies, and now she's on the floor, spitting up blood and in pain.
-
yeah you are right.. why the hell people are all sad and worry when one of their family in some kind of operation or some car accident or something deadly.. why the hell? and yes, dangerous and deadly mean 100% death.. no human ever survived after being bitten by a cobra or rattle snake etc..
Because real world is manga, yes?

People who say "Why care about Mocha we know she'll be fine"….
WHY DO YOU READ ONE PIECE? By the same logic, why do you care about the series, since we KNOW Luffy will become the Pirate King. Also why do you care about fights? Since we KNOW the good guys will eventually win...
It's the journey that Oda is allowing us to enjoy, not just the results. Otherwise the series would have been summarized in one panel showing Luffy at Raftel
So you wanted to ask a question that has already been answered 5 times?
-
Damn another break? How many is that so far this year? Not to mention the month break around new years that's going to happen
-
Re-reading the chapter definitely made it better. And made me want a passed-out-dragon-scarf.
-
i wish Chopper will gain haki after all this drama
My thoughts exactly.. I could see him getting so mad that he punches Caesar while yelling 'MOOOCCHHHAAAAA'
-
Re-reading the chapter definitely made it better. And made me want a passed-out-dragon-scarf.
Luffy pulls off Hody style better than Hody!
-
Tried to read it in college - bad idea.
Absconded after a few pages so gonna read now…...
...akufwurhkwahufrkw
throughout the whole thing I just wanted to hug the shit outta Chopper ; o ; and Mocha ; o ;
akifwlkf precious babus I can't even- awkduhwkr -
I could see him getting so mad that he punches Caesar while yelling 'MOOOCCHHHAAAAA'
I second this…..it's just too bad he's not really mobile right now, and with Caesar's unbeatable DF, he'd already be at a major disadvantage.
But the thought makes me think of the panel where Chopper expressed his faith in Luffy, and that he'll become the Pirate King. His captain taking out the trash is the closest he'll get. Treating the kids is more of his priority, anyway.
-
Based on Zachri's response, I am going to presume this is one of those chapters that OP's female fans will absolutely adore.
-

Somehow I can't access this video, a shame since this topic sounded interesting.
-
My thoughts exactly.. I could see him getting so mad that he punches Caesar while yelling 'MOOOCCHHHAAAAA'
This times 1000! I kinda wish Chopper was the one to fight Caesar while everyone else fights Vergo
-
So you wanted to ask a question that has already been answered 5 times?
Not everyone has the time to read the whole thread y'know.
From what I see your opinion on the kid's flashback made you say something pretty ridiculous. Fair enough you might feel like it's dragged out and we will know the outcome, but do you know how it will go down? We knew how the SHs were going to reach Sky Island but we didn't know how everything would go down. Oda is brilliant at making a simple flashback so interesting because of the brilliant storywriting that leads to a climatic ending, which becomes so much more emotional because of how it links to the backstory. Without the flashbacks it'd be random fighting to the death… for what? That's not interesting for me.
And what you also have to understand is One Piece is a VERY long manga. And because of that Oda has to come up with different types of plotlines so it doesn't become repetitive (which is not easy, unless you'd like to suggest a unique plot focus). So not everything will be of your taste, but you have to appreciate the variety of what Oda offers in terms fo characters and situations they're in.
-
This times 1000! I kinda wish Chopper was the one to fight Caesar while everyone else fights Vergo
Freakin' Luffy/Chopper team-up against Ceasar, but that'll probably never happen cause Ceasar is a logia.
-
I know there are a lot of people who read for story progression rather than quality. Sometimes they have grown tired of the series and just want to see how it ends, and other times it's because they're action lovers who just want to see new fighting techniques. Chapters like these will draw them out every time, but that doesn't mean they're right or wrong. They just have different taste. I agree though, people who are like that should realize it and start marathoning for their own good. Needless to say, for our good.
No you adorable terrorist. The reason why I don't like this chapter is because ever since the timeskip I haven't gotten to care for the subplots at all. The themes of discrimination in Fishman Island and the drugs now, I feel like the characters that serve to present them are bland and uninteresting. Therefore, when a chapter comes up exclusively about these characters, I don't like'em. This coupled with the lack of tension and the lack of emotional attachment that I'm supposed to feel because he gave three toddlers names is annoying. I feel nothing for these children. I don't know them
I just wish Odo would pick a goddamn street. You either go full Marineford and go macro and action and let everybody galk at amazing feats of this or that, or you go small and intimate so I can get to know the people I'm supposed to feel sorry for.
You know what this feels like? Like too little too late. If Oda wanted me to care for these kids, then give them three or for chapters before you start effin' them up. You used to have the balls to give us a ten+ chapter flashback of new characters for the sake of the story. Instead, I got three seperate panels basically reading out the names of three toddlers in a desperate attempt for me to like them. I honestly felt it was contrived, poorly executed, and annoying, honestly.
It's annoying, it's what it is. I wish Oda would take his time and do things right. I still feel like he's in Macro mode and all of the development from secondary characters, as well as our relationship with them is extremely superficial. Now that I thought about it some more, there's a very schizo kind of storytelling going on. I find it hard to bond with characters with a cloud of impending doom chasing everyone, whilst all these "named characters", god what a joke, are foaming at the mouth.
It's annoying because I want to feel something, but I don't because I don't eat spoonfuls of this crap. It's not good! I don't feel that it is good storytelling. Showing Mocha's conflicting emotions in a flashback messed with the pacing and was unnecessary. It could have been done in the present time. I feel like what's happening on panel is trivialized, like I constantly want to pan the camera around and see something else, cause I just don't care.
And people can't tell me it's wrong that I'm not caring. I'm either a sociopath which I am not, in fact I'm an absolute crybaby with most fiction, or this is mediocre storytelling. Oda does make it extremely clear that we should feel something for these kids. Some of us just aren't feeling it. Does that mean we are all Michael Bay fans who want nothing but explosions, awesome one liners and cleaveage? I don't think so.
If the story was well told, then people would care about this chapter, and not complain. It's not about the lack of explosions, it's about Oda's lazy and uninvolved Macro style that he got used to after the war and can't seem to get out of to truly build up intimate heartwrenching moments.
Again, if you don't feel this, then that's absolutely fine. This is what One Piece makes me feel lately, and by no means is it a statement of fact. But I do feel like this chapter in particular, due to being character driven and "emotionally jarring", gets the short end of Oda's storytelling stick. I'm not buying what this chapter is selling. I've been reading One Piece weekly since Water 7 and never have I felt less emotionally involved with the new characters and theme of a plot as after the timeskip with both arcs.
They still are choc full of awesome moments, but these emotional chapters just aren't those moments to me. They aren't the strong point of One Piece anymore. They certainly used to be, back when Oda could still restrain himself and slow down when it was appropriate.
And to those that posed the question no, Mocha will never die.
-
Do you guys really want to see Mocha die?
What you are asking for already happened; Chopper already lost Hiruluk due to Chopper being unable to cure him. That's a big part of his drive in wanting to cure every illness in the world.
Mocha is on the verge of death, probably the most critical situation he's ever experienced. NOW is the time to show what those 2 years of medical training are worth.
In fact, my bet right now and one of the very few predictions I'm willing to make is that the "The Fifth" chapter is going to be the one where Chopper cures Mocha from a sure death.
And yes, it also counts as character development, it's not only tragic event and constant failure that builds a character, you know.
-
does anyone else imagine the fight-monger people as these giant testosterone-filled burly men who, if they don't get their dose of One Piece manga fighting, go out and take it out on the local townspeople by fighting them and shouting One Piece techniques as they fight
because that's what I'm going to do from now on to make their comments more entertaining
-
Luffy pulls off Hody style better than Hody!
Haha didn't think about that :P But yeah Luffy pulled it off better for sure
-
And after taking the time to carefully analyze the content of your post, I came to the conclusion that you use fancy words without saying anything.
I said what I dislike about the chapter - the flashback was too long and it said things we already know. While I like flashbacks and I don't mind repeating information( despite what some people assumed), the combination of these two facts made the chapter not very enjoyable. In addition, last week's chapter wasn't the best and next week we have a break.
I think Oda can do better than this.
The flashback was what 5-6 pages. That is too long?
It told us nothing new? We didn't know that Chopper told Mocha that she was going to die. We didn't know that her and the other kids planned to sail off and meet each other again when 20.
Let see, what did we get this chapter. We got Zoro and Tashigi interaction. We got Tashigi seeing Zoro's new sword, people wanted that. We got the candy thing resolves by her eating it. We got the kids sedated/knocked out. We got Sanji reaching nami, Robin and chopper. We got Luffy out of the garbage place heading to ceaser. We also fit in a 5-6 page flashback. WE got a kid dying of drug overdose.
A crap load of things got resolved, and done this week. What happened last week? Zoro scared the shit out of monet.
Yea last week was the pinnacle of One Piece writting. You are correct.
I have a great suggestion for you on reading material. You seem to love super fast plot movement while fighting basically every chapter. Considering how most topics end up, I'm sure you also love boobs. Thus go and read Kenichi. that should satisfy your every need.
-
Do you guys really want to see Mocha die?
Most of me doesn't, but a small…..part of me just savors the potential development to arise of such an occurance.
What you are asking for already happened; Chopper already lost Hiruluk due to Chopper being unable to cure him. That's a big part of his drive in wanting to cure every illness in the world.
…Maybe Chopper losing Mocha will be like Zoro losing to Mihawk.....a serious bump in the road that makes them doubt themselves and vow to improve. But then again, it's far too late for something like that. Chopper's been in the story for over 500 chapters, and we're on the receiving end of a timeskip.
Mocha is on the verge of death, probably the most critical situation he's ever experienced. NOW is the time to show what those 2 years of medical training are worth.
I like this idea. Chopper studied a lot during his time; he didn't just improve his Zoan forms. What REALLY can he do, medically and in a serious crisis?

And the defender of justice and protector of the innocent came to tell me that my opinion is wrong? I have no problem with the flashback, or the kids, it's just that in my opinion this chapter is boring. This alone is no big problem, but last week's chapter wasn't very interesting either and next week we have a break. I would prefer it if this chapter also showed Law/Vergo/Smoker or Franky or Usopp/Brook/Kinemon or something more interesting so we have actual content to discuss for 2 weeks.

People are going to rip into you because this is Arlong Park, but this is like the ultimate reason to dislike this chapter. This opinion is perfectly fine. I, too, would have liked more content before the break. But the mere execution of this chapter and the fact that it made me emotional evened it out for me. Besides, breaks aren't a big deal when you've got tons of other manga you're reading.

Hey hey hey, but. . .we HAVE something to discuss! Look at my (widely ignored) post!!!
I'd like to add some side-discussion here (last week it was 44 pages of sexism, this week it'll be even longer due to the break and all about "fuck the kids// we love the kids", from what I gather).
Chopper said the giantification experiments have all been failures for centuries. Key word being failures.
Yet, since the beginning of the arc we've gotten a shitload of foreshadowing that Oars was the result of one of these experiments:
-
First a "subtle" hint like a skull really similar to Oars right at the PH entrance.
-
Same chapter, maybe less subtle, "bigger than a giant!".
-
And the more explicit by far, Oars shadow as clear as the day when talking about giantification experiments.
So, was Oars a failed experiment? Or even an experiment to begin with? Oda answered a fan in a SBS saying Oars came from an island where giants lived, and that he was an exceptionally big giant, like "there's allways this guy who's really tall, and he's still just a human", but with giants.
Is all of this going somewhere? Is it kind of a retcon to make him an experiment? And if they have all been but failures for centuries, Oars is a frigging failure? OARS? And if he's a failed experiment, how can he have descendants that are as massive as him?
. . .
. . .
Is this even relevant or is it just me?. . .Discuss!!
-
-
Nope. Can't see Oda pulling this off. Ever…Unless he REALLY wants to do something with Chopper's character.
I can totally see CC escaping though (maybe Vergo also). However, Monet seems to be finished. What a shame
law still got monet's heart…and monet looks like an important for doflamingo...im guessing she isnt finished.
she just needs to create a kamakuri and then shinokuni wont affect her.

I like this idea. Since we got two weeks ahead of us, I think I'm going to do just that. Probably will make a fine good youtube video.
-
@kouch_lee: Interesting thoughts you've brought up. I'm kinda curious to when these giantification experiments began. And why? I guess "to turn normal humans into strong, tall, tanks of power" is a possible answer, but maybe it was the result of armies being short on manpower. Who knows?
I think we'll get answers to these questions when either Vegapunk comes into the story, or when the Straw Hats go to Elbaf. Maybe sooner?
Oars and his descendant raise even more curious questions. The culture of Giants has been widely unexplored, much like Fishmen were until FI. It's one of the things I'm looking forward to in the New World.

Hey hey hey, but. . .we HAVE something to discuss! Look at my (widely ignored) post!!!

If Oars is a (failed) experiment, this would mean that Oars Jr. (he had a "III" on his Jolly Roger, so maybe there was another Oars before him) is an experiment. I personally don't think this is the case, but we will see.
-
after all the talk about her dream i think it is pushing it at best that oda will kill her. plus this is marketed for kids
-
What a great chapter, seeing Chopper break down and apologize for something he had no way of knowing about was powerful.
He blamed himself twice in this chapter. Something big may come out of Chopper this very arc or maybe after Doflamingo is dealt with. Maybe even a 6th person chapter by the time this saga is over.
-

Having children watch their mommy get shot. Nami (age 10 & Nojiko (11) watched as Alrong blew Bellemere's brains out. Shirahoshi(6) and her borthers witnessed Otohime get shot in the heart. I say thats just as dark.
I do not believe Mocha will die, Oda has built her chracter up in the 'here and now', not in a flashback where it shows how they died in the past.
I just pointing out that Oda has done some darkness in OP before.Damn another break? How many is that so far this year? Not to mention the month break around new years that's going to happen
Oda has an average of taking a week break around after 6 to 8 weeks. I say give him a break, making a manga is very taxing. I mean he does more than just draw! He maintains a story line that streaches over a decade. That is a lot of facts and tidbits to keep organized and a lot does get reused years later. Many were surprised but delighted how the Arlong Park in East Blue resembled Saboady Park in some designs, or how other aspests reappeared after years. Then there is also maintaining the story goes the way he wants it to. He's put a lot of things down in the past that isn't reveiled for some time. HE introduced Fisher Tiger (by name & deed) before the war, but it was what 2 years later we fans learn the truth and that he climbed the Red Line to free the slaves only after he had escaped from being one himself.
Add time to creating a good character and scene, if its a scene like a supposed 'deserted' lab of a mad scienitst, then he needs to create the requisite staff of said mad lab= the mad scientist, his assistant, the cannon-fodder henchmen. OF course then there is the storyline, why would the main character go there, what would make them stay? If is suppose to be deserted, then will any authotiry take notice? Why is the mad Scienctist there?
Making a manga is not simple as "Hey, let main characters beat up X villians!" one week of drawing and Viola!
…okay SOME mangas do just that but they lack character development and a good story. Naruto started out great, (personally I loved the bieging to the pre-timeskip) but when it from light-hearted to all-out action, it lost appeal to a lot fo people.
I rather Foloow a Mangaka that cares about his creation to take time to make it great, and that is Oda.Oda gives a lot of time to create a good manga. It's not some simple 9-5 job 5 days a week. He deserves to have some time to spend with hiw wife .... though I really think that some of that time is NOT just relaxing, I think he uses some of that week off to working on the plot and future
does anyone else imagine the fight-monger people as these giant testosterone-filled burly men who, if they don't get their dose of One Piece manga fighting, go out and take it out on the local townspeople by fighting them and shouting One Piece techniques as they fight

True, but I think it's a little different here. Mocha is virtually conducting self-abuse by ingesting all those drug candies and suffering openly because of it.
It's not as…..direct? as a bullet's fatality. Wouldn't drug overdose be a much more painful end for a person? Especially an innocent kid?

I see your points, but I think killing Mocha will be a good developement too.
Not only will mean that the New World is really dangerous and it's not to compare with the preTS adventures, but will help Chopper grow. Every doctor needs to realise that they're not gods and can't save everybody. Also, him appologizing to her and telling her he is going to save her looks like a white lie someone tolds a person that's going to die. It would be hard for me if after all those candies she turns out ok.The only reason why I can't see her dying (other than Oda doesn't do this, which I learned to not set thinks in stone regarding him) are the paralels Aohige has drowned between her and Dr. Hiluluk.

Yes, having whatever opinion you fancy is not bad, especially when it's presented logically and defended. Hurting others and forcing your opinion on others is bad. Do you understand the difference?

I like this idea hopefully Oda goes with this

Just because you injest a drug still wrapped up and all doesn't mean you instantly die. Heck Mocha spitting out blood the moment she swallowed the thing was pretty weird if we say it's due to drug injestion.
She didn't shoot it right in her veins, sheesh it's kind of overdramatic for me. =/

NOOO, you are a cold-hearted bastard and every dramatic moment in One Piece is unnecessary and so on, and so on. :ninja:

Meh chapter to me, I never really cared about the kids.

Mocha eating candy wrappers definitely added to her ill predicament LOL.
