It's not gory at all, it's disturbing and unexpected because a secondary character has been reduced to the state of being some simple meat that'll be eaten alongside vegetables and fruits.
He's just a part of a simple dish.
This. It didn't shocked me at first as much as it does now.
@Kaba:
Pardon me but I'm calling bullshit on the notion that Teppei was an "unmemorable" character. Teppei is anything but unmemorable. Hell, he was arguably the stand out character during the whole ice hell arc. Sure, he had his "derp" moment when he accidentally blurted out that there was no more soup and the fact that he has lousy handwriting, but he still showed that he was capable of acquiring the soup as well as the fact that he single-handedly saved Toriko's life at the hands of an enraged Tommyrod! Teppei may have fallen into the background after ice hell but his contributions to that arc was still awesome and because of that, I will miss the guy! :sad:
And this. He was easily one of my favourite secondaries, probably my favourite one after Jirou and Livebearer. I'll miss him.
I wonder if the man responsible for Teppei's demise was his dad. Wouldn't that be more tragic?
HA HA HA!
These YouTube comments for the show's dubbed trailer just keep getting more and more funny!
@rob19ny:
"Uhhhh I want that in my mouth"
Me: Close your eyes girl! SPLAAAAASH!
That's a pretty cruel twist, but I like it. I wonder what happened to his dad anyway?
Fruit bowl topic aside, it'd be very interesting once the Jidar faction makes its move. Before this I only get a feeling of 'fighting-for-food' feeling from the Bishokukai, not much antagonistic feeling aside from racing to get ingredients. Maybe a few exceptions like Grinpatch, who's pretty weird and we don't know where his true motivation lies yet, unlike Kuromodo, Alfaro, Starjun etc. But with the Jidar, it's pretty obvious that they target human (cause they eat them brrr) and it gives a more powerful 'bad-guy-need-to-defeat' feel to it. And I think Jiro will be the main player against this faction because of Teppei's death.
Will the 4Kings get involved with finding Center? Or will Jiro be the only one who's gonna find it? Is the traitor in the IGO from Bishokukai or Jidar? Where'd Zebra's Zebra come from? What's Mansam doing poking around the Nitro business cause I still think Rapp is suspicious lol. Who's that guy behind Handsome? Where the heck is he during the 4Beast raid?
So many mysteries… I can't wait for the next cahpter already AAHHH.
Hmm trying to find Sunny's voice actor for English took me longer than it should have. But surprisingly this seems to be Aaron Roberts first gig.
I always wanted Sunny to be voiced by Kirk Thornton. He definitely has the range for elegant flamboyancy that defines Sunny's character. But I hope Aaron does a good job.

Well, the hooded guy speaks in very polite speech pattern, the same as Joa from Jidar, so yes, it's likely he's the hooded man.
The question is, who is… or rather WHAT is Joa. It'd be neat if he's actually a Nitro that learned the human speech.

I dunno I'd think that'd be a bit of a cop out. I wouldn't mind if Joa looks exactly like he does without the hood and has no distinguishing facial features at all. Hell the Saiseya of the Bishokukai looks very similar to him in that regard, meaning no visible mouth.
I just hope that in next chapter the gang doesn't come across a bowl of Mansam Salad.
What is this I hear about the localising team randomly swapping out the BGM for random totaly out of place rap ? Did I stumble into a quantum singularity and wound up back in 1993 ?

@The:
Oh, it's going to have big consequences alright, immensely powerful dudes are going to care that he's dead.
The question is though, do you care?
At least the guy showed up before and did stuff. Unlike Wagon.
As a sidenote I don't realy like this. I hate it when we're supposed to have a threatening antagonist in a series and then we hit the reset button and are like "Nope, nobody died, nu-uh. Not one single person was chewed to pieces or crushed or suffocated or died of masive blood loss or gangrene or…..NOBODY !"
It makes the series look less mature then it is, it makes the threats seem less threatening and the stakes are worth far less after being achieved because of it. I realy wish Shima would know better.
Random energy ball I can stomach because it at least had a mouth and ate the fucker. But I cannot absolutely stand any of this "no one dies" bullshit, especialy if it's fricken extras and this thing was introduced as mankind's largest threat in centuries.
Well, the last page is the thing of nightmares… I liked Teppei :(
Wow, what an ending…. I'm still in shock

I thought it provided a nice contrast with the cannibalistic theme we sort of got from the last page. People did complain about how the four kings were basically indulging in indirect cannibalism by eating up the four beast, but then we see that they in fact werent. And then we see heavy hints of the villains being cannibals. Liked it personally.

I was talking about the lack of facial features.
If center can revive someone within minutes from death, ok, good, but if it can revive ANYONE (even though they can't eat as their stomach are eaten or rotten) it would be lame.
But if it can revive someone within minutes, then why seal it? unless it has a very high cost on the enviroment, or it requires an human life.
I think CENTER works like nitro regeneration ability. If your body is mummified, you get this cell revival/awakening.
Secondly not only is revival not under consideration for good guys (i.e no-one talks of reviving acacia), death is respected aspect of their life, you won't see them curse death.
I would like to imagine all good guys have some form of food honor, so they would take their defeat graciously and not look for revenge/revival.
I curious about joao, he serves a weak old man for so long (other motivations), yet he is so evil, I wonder if the king is relative or has something on him, maybe mutual cooperation (didn't joao get him most of the money though?).
I'm still in denial about Teppei's death. I wont accept it….until it's 100% confirmed next chapter (or the one after that) :D
Can someone give me a different link to the video? Apparently I live in Narnia

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a "once in a lifetime". Once the ingredient is used, no one will revive it anymore to respect Acacia's will. Also, if you paid attention to what Chiyo said, is very evident that it can only bring one single person back to life per time.
Teppei was a young man, he only was 2 years older than Toriko and co, his death not only was sudden and cruel, but more than anything else, very, very unfair. Knocking Master Jirô and Setsuno are gonna do whatever it takes in order to find CENTER and regain what with so much ruthlessness was snatched off their hands.
Even with that, what happened in this week's chapter cannot and will never be erased of our minds. Teppei's death will always be remembered through story of manga as one of the most gruesome deaths that has ever taken place.
By the way, probably the same guy who seemingly killed Teppei was appearing behind Mansam earlier. And although he said that he wants to act, he never appaered again after that scene. :S
I dunno what really happened, just saying…
I would just like to state that the IGO had no way of knowing every single last person devoured would be magicaly not dead after being swallowed by a steroid abusing giant bean stalk, so the way in which Ichiryu chose to handle this is beyond irresponsible.
Also the fact we didn't even see a glimpse of Shigematsu during this arc despite him being 2nd in Command is well, somewhat dissapointing. I have no problem with Mansam it's jut Shima seems to forget he made another realy strong guy besides Ichiryu as Mansam's superior and has instead resorted to him whenever any kind of high Level IGO related business was necessary.

Dude has less screentime then Ace in this same situation, so, probably :P
I'm still wondering where Shigematsu was during all the mess. Maybe he's heading towards Gourmet World himself for an (for us) unknown reason.

Hey, can I join you sometime for some turkish delight?
Yes good. What a nice last page.
Makes me with Shima was better at developing characters, though. I probably wouldn't have felt any different if it had been Rin or Sunny had been in that bowl instead. Imagine if we had some real emotional investment to go along with it.
And on the subject on the I can already tell I'm gonna like the dub better than the sub.
The fact that Komatsu's not a shota already improves it by 50%.
I always pictured Komatsu sounding like Toad from the Super Mario Bros cartoons so I can't stand his Japanese VA.

I really like Mansam since his first appearance but this scenario would be nothing but amazing (still cruel and sad).

It would sort of lose it's shock value after Teppei.
I don't agree so much. Instead it will increase the shock for the first totally unexpected and devastating death (Teppei's). Anyway I will like any Shima's choice.
Nah, Mansam is gonna be fine. Whether he will appear with all his limbs in its place is a different matter.
He doesn't feel pain, so it doesn't bother him at all
They will find Mansam wasted next chapter.
@KKB: Sorry, I´m actually from Argentina. It seems the video is unavailable in several countries :C
I finally found another video on tumblr btw. Didn´t liked it at all X____X

Another good thing is Chris Rager playing Grinpatch. He's got a really deep voice so Grinpatch won't be sounding like a little girl in the dub.
For those unfamiliar with the name, Chris Rager played Mister Satan in the dubs of Dragon Ball Z/GT/Kai. Those I assume he won't be using that exact same tone of voice.
I'm not talking about reader's attachment.
By "perfect character to sacrifice", I'm talking about in-story development.He was the closest thing to a peer the 4 kings have. Young, apprentice of the top tiers, similar in strength and position.
A prospect. Having him gruesomely killed this way sends a chilling message that "this can easily happen to Toriko", and what kind of villains the protagonists are facing.
He's not important enough to affect the story of the protagonist, or bring shock to the readers, but perfect example as a comparison to the heroes. Not to mention, his death has juicey reprecussions in the world of Toriko.
I tried adressing this angle too in end of the post you quoted, but basically, if all that is important is Teppeis powerlevel/status for the point to be made, Shima could easily have introduced any new character of the same level and sacrificed him instead. But he opted for Teppei, because it's more effective on the readers if its "That guy who I've seen before in the story!!" that dies, and not some new dude. And then we're back at it being just for shock value.
But really, my main issue with this is not that Teppei died, or the concept of sacrificing characters for the sake of a point/hype/shock value, it's just how it was written.
Shima went to his secondary character drawer, picked up a guy who'd been out of the loop for 100 chapters and could use some paneltime and development, and dumped him kinda spontaneously into the current arc.
Then, he went on to do barely anything with the character in that arc.
And then, the character died.
I know I'm harping on this, but I just find this totally uncerimoneous snuffing of Teppei to be more aggravating than profound. I mean, all the people who were Teppei fans, are you cool with this? Not bummed at all at his treatment? I'm just curious.
Maybe but it would be shocking and, at the same time, amazing for the new development of the series. Not?
No it would be profoundly shitty, and a total waste of an entertaining character, again purely for one-off shallow shock value. That it could be spun into some angry reaction faces for Toriko and crew later would not change what awful writing that would be.
"Shocking" =/= Quality.
@The:
"Shocking" =/= Quality.
Tell that to Noriaki-kun.
People who say a character, be it main or secondary, in a shounen jump action series can't die before going all out fighting a powerful foe are nuts. Seriously, stop with that argument, it's ridiculous as hell. In real life people can die all of a sudden, why should it be any different in a manga? But if you cannot understand something that simple then I won't even bother explaining to you.

But that's not even what we're complaining about.
Toriko isn't real life, it's a shounen jump action series. More importantly: its a fictional work. And if you want to kill off a character to make a shocking moment and a point theres good ways of doing it, and bad ways of doing it. This was the equivalent of reeling in an old supporting character for the season finale of a TV show, only to immediately kill them as a shocking cliffhanger. Gee, it seems like its totally transparant that the sole reason for the characters reappearance was so they could die!
No one is saying that Teppei deserved to die of old age or have a Whitebeard-style final grandstand. But for a guy thats been gone since century soup, appearing just to go "Hi! Remember me? I'm back in the story again! I die in 10 chapters and don't really do much until then, but please care!"? Thats not good writing to me.
That's your opinion. Pretty much almost everyone liked the way it happened: unexpected, sudden, and with some hint. But if you don't like it it's fine. And who are you to say what's written okay and what's not anyway.
In addition Teppei was already at his limit due to being soaked with the Posion Rain and not eating the antidote, which only made his eventual death completely unavoidable.
I'm gonna agree, bringing back Teppei just to kill him off is lame.
But I like this new gruesome approach the author seems to be taking. The overly shonen vibe its been giving off recently was bringing it down.

I'm a fan of Teppei and I'm really sorry for his death. But that was an unexpected turning point that amazed me, although cruel. I can't understand why you think this is not a good writing.

"Shocking" =/= Quality.
I agree for "Shocking=/=Quality" but I disagree for the other things. The (hypothetical) death of Mansam would add spice on the plot (for me, obviously) because it would reveal how problematic the masked guy is. And it would open space for new scenarios. Of course I would cry if Mansam leaves us because I really like him but this could turn into some great future development.
I can't see this because i don't live in the US but this was uploaded on FUNi's Youtube :)
Could someone post a link for us non-Americans?
Hmm after reading more posts on Teppei's death I'm trying to figure out why I liked that reveal.
Teppei wasn't a character I really thought about. He was impressive when he fought, he had a very important career, epic lineage, a fun character flaw, but not hugely over the top with it. He was, for me a character that I didn't secretly wish to see more of the way I would for the other 3 Kings. But when he would show up, I'd be happy to see him.
Seeing him again as this badass that showed up, gave the Kings a pep talk and then he goes off to find the puppetmaster behind the 4 Beast. Then he's shown facing off with the person possibly responsible and I think, this is gonna be a good fight. Then, bam! Head in a bowl! Wtf!? I was actually shocked. Totally didn't expect that outcome. I'm not mourning Teppei, I wasn't attached to him in any particular way. He was cool, but I could take him or leave him. Maybe it was my lack of attachment, but respect for his character was why that scene worked for me.
