It appears that more and more often, I'm getting Windows XP Stop errors…usually it says the problem was caused by a malfunctioning driver or device, but which one is not known. It seems like it's something different each time. Could it be that something major, like the motherboard, is about to die on me, or just one of the attatched devices? First my USB card started causing my computer to freeze, I removed it, and it solved that problem, but not the stop errors.

I had your problem before. For some unknown reasons, the blue screen appears. A few weeks later, my motherboard died. So most likely, your motherboard's dying.

Oh yeah, I learned the backing up lesson a long time ago. I already saved all my files to disc twice, the last time I did was last month, I think. I'm finally getting DSL next week (yes, the very first time!) so it would suck if suddenly my computer goes kaput right after that. :P

I just found a useful program - I don't know if it will solve the problem (time will tell), but it basically analyzes your system and tells you what drivers are bad, and gives you a direct link from the manufacturer to the driver you need. I had lots of bad drivers, apparently, including IDE controllers, mouse, soundcard, and modem. So hopefully that was the cause of the problem. That and my crappy USB card which I bought less than a year ago and crapped out on me. I think it's the only thing that I didn't save a box and receipt for. throws out window

could you tell us what's the name of the soft?

Yes, it's called Driver Detective. But it's not free. It cost a one time fee of $29.99, but I figured it would be worth it for not having to go through the effort of finding bad drivers manually (Windows Update doesn't do squat). There might be ones cheaper than that or some freeware/trials available. The links came up when I was looking for USB drivers. I didn't even know such programs existed.
