Anyone know how to save on Final Fantasy Origins in Final Fantasy I?
Don't you have to use the Inn to save in FFI?
Or a tent, I think
Fuck that rope jumping mini-game.

Took me so many tries, but one time I got so determined I eventually got it. Still doesn't compare to the brutal effort I had to make to get things done in FFXI.
Also bought Origins.. I like it but whats the difference between the PSP/GBA/PSX versions?
I uses the same magic system as the original Final Fantasy, instead of the Magic Point system used in every game after.

My brother did it, somehow. Finished the Hippaul Racing and all the other stuff too. For some reason he's an absolute beast at the minigames in FFIX. Sucks at the minigames in pretty every other FF though, which is kinda odd.
Not sure if this is worth the bump but new dlc is coming for XII-2

Showed to a ME fan (who's also playing FFXIII-2 right now); he was utterly confused.

I am happy, angry and confused at the same time.
Not that I own Final Fantasy XIII-2, but why would anyone want that? It seems like it would completely destroy any illusion of getting sucked into the game's world. Basically, it feels like it would be like playing in an old fantasy town and seeing a McDonalds.
It's not like FFXIII-2 is to be taken that seriously to begin with. So no illusion to break, really.
I'm about to see the true -secret- ending~

That… sigh that sure is a thing, Square-Enix. <:|

They're both RPGs. Obviously, there must be a huge number of ME fans playing FFXIII-2 who'd shell over money for this.

You know. I don't ever recall remembering what that actually was lol. All I remember was that I needlessly had to finish the game once more to get it.

Oh come now. It's bad but I can certainly think of more pointless ways to spend my time. Like…..umm.....dunno. I've certainly played games that felt more like time wasters than this did.
Just wait until Versus XIII… Ehhh i mean the renamed XIII-3... Noctus will be simply renamed into Noel...
I just want my good old FF from the PSone era back =(
So I'm fighting the final boss(es) in FFIX.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is coming out in North America aw yeah
Theatrhythm is actually really fun. For a game that is so simple, they were smart about structuring lots of metagame/RPG/collectible stuff around it to keep you coming back. That, and the short level times make it a really good handheld game.

So how does it play? I'm not so sure about it. Kinda like Rhythm Paradise or Elite Beat Agents?
I can't help but notice that they can make good games in different genres tagged with FF(I really liked dissidia) but when it comes to their origins(jrpg) they can't deliver…
Oh god I'm dying this looks so good
The part with Ronfaure from FFXI
and vs Ultros to the FFVI boss theme
Well, I finished FFIX and I have to say it's a damn good game. As people have said, it's a great callback to the FF games of yore, which were more adventurous and less gritty, cyberpunk-y, and melodramatic. In fact, that's one of my favorite aspects about it is that, for the most, it stays away from the pretentious melodrama and pseudo-philosophical existentialist crap and the story is pretty straightforward.
Gameplay-wise it works really well. I love the AP system and that the characters level-up relatively quickly. The characters are all pretty well-balanced and usable. The ATB system can be pretty irritating in that you can never tell who's going to attack when and by the time you realize it, you've already given your characters orders and its too late to adjust for the enemy's attack. Also, I wish the programmers had included Cottages and especially X-potions, as Hi-potions become virtually useless by the 4th disc and I don't want to always have to use Curaga/Cura to heal my party.
Oh yeah, and as for my complaints about the overworld earlier: yes, the game does get brighter and the overworld in general did grow on me, so I really have no problems with. I just wish it were a little more crisper.
Design-wise, the game has obviously aged a bit, but not nearly as bad as FFVII. In fact, pretty much all the scenery and even the cutscenes are all gorgeous to look at. This a prime example of doing what you can with the technology given to you and making the product long-lasting.
Now, as for the characters
Zidane- Pretty solid as a main character. After all the mopy, self-pitying characters of later FF installments, Zidane is a breath of fresh air. I love how after finding out that spoilers he's an artificial lifeform created to aid in the recreation of Terra, he's kind of "whatever" about it. As for battle, he's a pretty standard as far as heroes go. Great attack, great stealing system, although his special attacks kinda suck.
Garnet- A pretty good princess character. She's strong and independent, if not a bit bland, but I really can't complain much about her character. Battle-wise, she's pretty good up until you get Eiko who turns out be an even better healer and summoner than her, so it makes Garnet's character kinda pointless. I mean, I guess Garnet has a slight advantage over Eiko in terms of summons, but I didn't find that to be much of a trade-off.
Vivi- Definitely the best character in the game. Has a very sad and deeply human story and he's such cute and timid character you can't help but root for him. His mutliple kidnappings in the first part of the story did kinda bug me, but thankfully they knocked that off pretty quickly. Combat-wise, he's your standard black mage. I found that he tended to run out of MP relatively, but I guess that's just a staple of the series and it's pretty pointless to complain. I just wish there was a better alternative for when they run out of MP then "whack them with a staff for minimal damage."
Steiner- A tight-assed by good-hearted bumbling knight. Can't complain. He's great as a character and great as a fighter. And his Shock is fuckin' tits.
Freya- A strong, silent, independent female is always nice, but I wish they had done more with her character in the second half. Combat-wise, she could've been better. She could've used some higher attack stats and does her ultimate move really have to use so much MP?
Eiko- As far as kid characters go, she's pretty cool. Her crush on Zidane is kinda cliched, but at least she's not overtly obnoxious like so many other kid characters before her. As I mentioned before, she's an even better healer than Garnet, so she's definitely a keeper.
Quina- For a comic relief character she's pretty good. Doesn't have a deep backstory and doesn't really tie into the overarching plot, but I think that works quite well. Combat-wise, I really hated that her attack would fluctuate from high and low damage, which wouldn't be so bad if her attacks occassionally were really high (by the end, she was doing 2500 damage tops). She also seemed to have really shitty defense, both physical and magical.
Amarant- Great character as far as his design, personality and usability, but man does he just feel like some filler character they shoved in at the last minute. What's this guy's story, that he was a bounty hunter who had a Darwinistic outlook on life and Zidane and co. swayed him to the good side? Really wish they had spent more time giving him an actual story.
Kuja- You know, I'm really not sure how much I like this guy as a villain. I mean, I'm glad he's not a mopy, brooding pretty boy with a pole up his ass (well, okay, fine, he is a pretty boy), but at the same time he seems kind of clichedly evil and over-the-top. He actually kind of reminds me of Seymour from FFX, except thankfully he's a lot less obnoxious and has more style. And what the hell is with that midriff-revealing outfit of his? Sheesh.
So yeah, overall it's a really great game and definitely deserves to be in the top-tier of FF games. I'm not quite done with it yet considering I still need to beat Ozma and maybe a few other sidequests, but it's been a great game-playing experience, well-worth the already over 50 hours I've put into it.
I'd wear Kuja's outfit every day all day irl
So how does it play? I'm not so sure about it. Kinda like Rhythm Paradise or Elite Beat Agents?
It's a bit like EBA. However, unlike EBA where you are tapping directly on stuff on the lower screen, you watch the upper screen here and tap in time while ignoring the bottom screen (which is essentially like a mousepad). You will need to swipe directionally at times, which is pretty forgiving, and there are spots where you will hold and slide the stylus up and down, but as long you're holding it near the center of the screen you don't really have to worry too much about what your hand is doing.
In the "battle" levels your 4-character party will do damage/skills according to which character's lane the notes are coming in on. They don't show you any damage numbers but you will do damage to the monsters/bosses and therefore the more you can beat in a level the better items they'll drop. The RPG elements don't really help you beat levels any easier, though your equipped items/skills might help you survive a bit longer in a tough situation. Mostly they just exist to help you get better drops. There's a card collecting binder that will steadily fill up as enemies drop more cards, which all feature one of the models in the game. As you get duplicates, the cards will level up and there are three tiers, so the idea is that if you play long enough, you can get all 81 cards up to the top tier for 100%. You can also collect crystal shards in various colors by beating the Shrine of Chaos mode, which combines two stages with random effects. Once you've collected eight shards of any one color, you'll be able to use a new character (an extra one from each FF game, i.e. Aerith, Yuna, Vivi). Also, three difficulty levels (which will unlock for each song as you beat the easier ones)
There's also a nice Rhythm Points system that gives you points (usually around 100-120) every song you beat, and it will unlock new features/levels/songs for the music player every 500 points, so there's always incentives pulling you along at every moment. And on top of that there's an achievement system with 64 different achievements to grab.
In short, the game itself is incredibly simple and they knew it, so there's a ton of other stuff tucked around it to make you want to keep playing it over and over.
I don't remember seeing this posted here.
Best. Thing. Ever.
@Angelus:
Throne you say? I s2g they'd better not say Caius and Noctis are the same person.
What if… o_o
Nahhh. It's not the same throne.
I don't think FF13 versus interferes with FF13 and FF13-2... Their worlds aren't linked in any ways.
Nobodyman, nice review ! I'm glad to see there still some people that play and enjoy FFIX.
I wanted to get to it once more, but after so many years, I couldn't get past the graphics (outside the cut-scenes) as they didn't age as well as some of the previous ones in my opinion. I actually could play FFVII again, though !
Zidane- Pretty solid as a main character. After all the mopy, self-pitying characters of later FF installments, Zidane is a breath of fresh air. I wouldn't say entirely "whatever"; one of the best moments in the entire series, at least musically, involves him moping after his revelation- and the great thing about Zidane is that it only takes him 5 minutes to snap out of it!
But it's good to see another FFIX lover getting made. I agree with nearly all your sentiments, especially regarding Adamant. I'd much much rather have an de-oglopped Cid fill out his character slot, especially since the game was such a retro throwback. Kuja is my favourite villain though; I can kinda see where you're coming from with Seymour, and I think it is to Kujas advantage that he lacks a voice actor. Despite the clichédness I just love that 1) he's unapologetically a bastard, and 2) he plots and schemes and becomes a self made man.
Whats your opinion on Necron?
@The:

Yeah, that's true, he does go through a short moping period, but initially he seemed to be kind of okay with it. To me it felt like the moping was kind of forced upon him.

I'm curious; what would you have to say about Pitchfork's opinion of him?
! > The mysterious arms-dealer who has been supplying Brahne with the arcane knowledge and hardware she uses in her bid to conquer Gaia. Not even Brahne suspects what he truly is: an abnormal Genome dispatched by Garland to stir up havoc and war throughout Gaia. As the result of an unforeseen fluke in the Genome production process, Kuja has an ususally powerful sense of self and is unwilling to live in servitude and die in obscurity like the rest of his soulless bretheren. He plans to serve Garland only until he can find a way of overthrowing him and averting his pre-authored fate.
It probably wouldn't even be editorializing to say that Kuja is the least impressive antagonist Final Fantasy has had up to this point. Instead of drawing inspiration from a Shakespeare villain, Square apparently decided to base Final Fantasy IX's main villain on the attention-whoring snots who get rejected at their auditons to play Shakespeare villains. Overlooking the man-thong, the effeminate hair tosses, the mincing, the temper tantrums, and the embarrassing attempts at poetry, there just isn't much going on with this guy. He's like that one insufferable drama fag you knew back in high school: he always has to be the center of attention, he never shuts the hell up even when he has nothing worth saying, and even while doing something villainous, he acts like he's standing in front of a full-body mirror and practicing for his role as Scar in the spring semester production of The Lion King. His only real interesting moments occur when he's ripping off Blade Runner: Kuja is a glimpse at what Roy Batty would have been if he'd made the opposite choice at the end of the film. (And if you think all the Blade Runner similarities are coincidental, explain Kuja's "time to die" line, which he speaks immediately before his final showdown with Zidane.) It is possible, though, that Kuja comes off so badly because of some cultural differences between Japan and the States. Adolescent Japanese players would probably find something compelling about a person produced to look, act, and think like everybody else but resists; insisting on asserting his individuality and fighting his destiny. If that's the case, American players would probably be able to relate more to Kuja if he looked something like this.
But in short, Kuja isn't really a villain. He's just a dick.
Something Borrowed: "Garland, Garland! I got the lead role in the Bran Bal Playhouse production of Final Fantasy VI! I'm playing Kefka!"
Something New: Butt floss.
Whats your opinion on Necron?
Random god-tier boss that appears out of absolutely nowhere? Honestly, that was…........pretty weak.
Freya- A strong, silent, independent female is always nice, but I wish they had done more with her character in the second half. Combat-wise, she could've been better. She could've used some higher attack stats and does her ultimate move really have to use so much MP?

3 of Freya's 8 attacks suck ass, even though she's my favorite I never learn them because they're so detrimental, and can even hurt or kill you. (Great healer with the Reis's Wind attack though.) In both those cases you can maximize their abilities with just a tiny bit of grinding. For Freya, go out and kill a few dozen dragons, then start using Dragon's Crest move where "Damage increases based on the number of dragon-type enemies killed."
With Quinna, capture 99 frogs in the swamps and start using Frog Drop. At that point they both have moves that do 9,999 non-elemental damage every time for very little MP.
Zidane's Thievery can be similarly built up, but takes hundreds of uses of successful steal to get built up. Basically have to steal from every enemy you encounter throughout the game and have a high speed to get it anywhere.
Amarant is a lot of fun, especially if you get him countering and healing every round, but yeah, he shows up soooo late in the game he's ahrd to get attached to.
Amarant and Quina are my faves.
@RobbyBevard:

Huh, I'm not aware of that attack. I'll have to look into it.

You're talking about Frog Drop, right? Yeah, that's pretty useful.
Yeah, I edited my post. Dragon's Crest is the ability I was thinking of.
Random god-tier boss that appears out of absolutely nowhere? Honestly, that was…........pretty weak.
I'm sorry did you actually finish the fight with Necron? Their is nothing weak about Grand Cross.
I'm sorry did you actually finish the fight with Necron? Their is nothing weak about Grand Cross.
The fact that he's a random god-tier boss that appears out of nowhere is weak.
I disagree with the notion that Eiko is better than Dagger. Eiko DOES have a slight edge in Magic, but Garnet's Spirit stat is so naturally high that she should enter Trance every three or four battles and her Trance is so broken that once you optimize her equipment/stats for Spirit and throw Auto-Regen on the entire party, her Trance becomes a free Curaga spell every time it hits, especially with the long summons like Ark. You could sit with Dagger on standby and have her Summon Ark every five seconds to deal insane damage while the animation lets Auto-Regen completely heal the party. It's pretty broken.
Amarant is my second-favorite character to bring into battle. His Trance makes all of his sweet buffs into full-party buffs that, when optimized for Spirit, makes him an incredible support character who happens to rule at dishing and taking damage.
Zidane is a staple of any party, but a little-known fact is that he can be removed from the party in the final dungeon. So you don't HAVE to use him in the final battle. However, he's fast and useful in almost all situations, so he's not bad.
Quina is anything and everything you want her to be, thanks to Blue Magic. You can't go wrong with using him as backup.~
Freya is badass when you use Jump. I think Auto-Regen kicks in up there too, making her invincible. This was critical when it came to whooping Necron's ass in the finale.~
The other three are great, and I use everybody, but the four or five above together are just broken.~ I love FF9. I just wish there were harder bosses to put my broken party to better use. :P
My final four were Zidane, Vivi, Eiko, and Freya. I liked Dagger, but Phoenix saved my ass so many times, you have no idea. Freya was cheap as HELL, with Dragoncrest, and Vivi was all sorts of fun. Apparently, you could trade Zidane out in the final stage? I had no idea. I would have so made Dagger or Quina takes his place. I like Zidane, but I never found him all that useful save for stealing rare items.
Honestly, all eight characters in the game have their own potential to be awesome, really. That game really didn't have any bad character, IMO.
Its a little frustrating that Steiner is only at his best when teamed with Vivi. I like both of them, and enjoy having both on my team, but you don't always want to dedicate half your slots to that setup.
