Man today's One Piece from Shonen Jump Alpha was fantastic! Gotta love Stephen's not Mangastream translations!

You're trying to tell me you only buy chapters/volumes of this and other series legally and don't read scans? F*cking hypocrites.
Are many hypocrites, myself included? Yea
But it at least seems we know we are doing something illegal. Its those that think that Viz is wrong that is what annoys us. Did we know it was illgeal back in napster days? hell yea. Were we upset when it got shut down, sure, but doeesn't mean we thought napster was in the right. We knew it was wrong.
Just like onemanga, mangareader, mangastream, mangazone, mangafox, ect are all in the wrong.
I want a Netflix for manga. Have a site like Onemanga or something that has manga from ALL magazines. That's something I would jump on. Can I illegally download movies in minutes that I watch on netflix, sure as hell can. But I do it because they ahe a big selection. This alpha jump as much as i would love to support it just feels weird buying it for a couple manga when i read 100's. (figure of speech, don't read hundreds)
I'm an anime guy when it comes to buying. Manga to me is like getting a sneak peak to the anime. Only reason i have manga on my hard-drive is for quick reference. If I wanna look at something quick for "wait did that happen" or argument sake its easier to look through a few pages of manga than try to find it in anime.

JManga could be a NetFlix of manga, if they didn't make you buy each volume individually.
-
Yep, this weeks One Piece chapter was great! This was technically my first Alpha chapter, as the previous chapters I read a bit before waiting!
-
Everyone saying how evil those who read scanlations will be back here on Wednesday (or Thursday) reading the new chapter and talking about it and contributing 'to the fall of the industry'; such hypocrites they are.

this post is pointless, it does not add anything to the argument or even really take a side, so why post it?

Except some of us read the scanlation AND use Alpha. And before you go saying well I buy all the volumes so its ok for me, that gives no proof that most people reading scanlations act similarly. Anecdotal evidence doesn't really prove anything on any sort of large scale you know. Besides which, it makes me laugh when people think that someone's point is worse because they're a hypocrite. If I say killing is wrong and then kill someone, does it mean killing isn't wrong just because I'm a hypocrite? Of course not. And really, the main reason I still read scanlations instead of sticking to Alpha alone is because people I know don't do that and that means I wouldn't be able to talk to them about it, or at least not on an equal playing field
-
I think some people miss the point that piracy actually helps sales in a lot of cases.
Its simply a matter of exposure.
If ten people see or download pirated scans of a comic online, like it and then five of them go out and buy a volume/collection, you have made five sales you otherwise wouldn't have had.If all ten of them had never read any of the series at all. You would have no sales.
How many guys on here learned of One Piece through illegal scans/fansubs.
I'm going to say 95%. I know I did. -
I like how you pull a statistic out of your ass. But you ignore that it's give and take. It doesn't matter if it exposes 1,000,000 fans to a series if only a few pay for it legally and it draws away even 100,000 fans who might have otherwise paid for it

FYI, I only read Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha.
So, no, I won't.
Anyway, the chapter wasn't bad. Still lovin' the crew interactions!

I'm not gonna say Boycott VIZ Media even though they attacked one of my all time favorite websites..its a damn shame..the harsh reality of "nothing lasts forever" has come to light..I admit, I'm huge internet pirate..I have downloaded thousands of files for free over the years..and I thought I would never give in to paying for stuff I can get free on the internet..But as I grow older I have added netflix, huluplus, gamefly, etc. to my bills, I have bought countless anime merchandise, and started a huge collection of blu ray movies..consequently, VIZ MANGA will be part of my monthly bill now..So I do believe that sites like mangastream, Apforums, etc. deserve a thanks, its because of them that VIZ Media will have a loyal customer from now..Its just ironic that they have to actually threatened the people that aided them by advertising their works for free, instead of helping them out.

Agreed, I would think that a lot of people were exposed to it as a young person watching 4 kids. I can say that anime like naruto and bleach were exposed to me through toonami and adult swim (naruto I first heard of through word of mouth)
As time went on and Internet became more dominant and accessible to me, scanlations came about. Even then I barely read them and would rather watch the anime.

Shueisha = The Gorosei or the World Nobles?

I know I did, and that's why I'll never bash the 4kids dub. If it didn't exist I would never had known about the series.

That's what annoys me, it's not like mangastream was the only place to read scans or something… I would rather get simultaneous volume releases than sja releases honestly.
(not literally simultaneous volumes, but same week would be cool)

Can we please get the Manga Stream lovers kicked out of the thread, since this seems to be the only place we can discuss the Alpha chapter's it's a bit annoying to have all of these haters posting.

Just ignore them.
So to get back to what this thread was originally created for, I liked this week's chapter, felt fillerish but not in a bad way.

Neither,
Shueisha is Whitebeard, effortlessly shattering the false pretenses of a cocky little Ace (Manga Stream). -

Hmm, I really dont know how to react to this development. First of all, I have always bought the volumes when I can, so I have all of OP in print form lying on my shelf. But that doesnt detract from the fact that scanlations have always been my primary source. Why? Because I live in Singapore. Even now, I have no access to SJA, so taking down Mangastream and their ilk essentially cuts me off even if i'm willing to pay for the subscriptions, and I can say the same for the tens of thousands (if not more) of scanlation dependent fans outside the US & Canada. So where does that leave us? I will be hunting for scans still, but legally I am reduced to waiting for the full print volumes to be available at 25 bucks a pop at my local Kinokuniya. I dont know about you but after 'supporting' the series for over 10 years, that leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth. I know that scanlations are illegal and all, but to the vast majority of fans, its basically their first and sometimes only source. Now the actions of Viz (whether justified or not doesnt matter) have cut off every one of us. I'm sure there will be backlash in the long term.
Quick question to anyone who cares… If I try to buy SJA through my iTunes account (for iPad) does it prompt you about geographical restrictions before the credit card gets deducted? Or do they simply take your money and go "Sorry Bro!" ? If there is a way around it I would be game, but I dont want to pay even 99c for a wasted effort.

Hey guys in light of what is happening with Mangastream can someone tell me how you can buy recently released manga chapters and how much are they?

Do you live in Ireland (referring to your username) or anywhere else outside of North America? Because in that case, there isn't really any way to get recent chapters (before they are collected in a tankobon) legally.
-
It's times like this when I hate living in the UK. Take me America!
In all seriousness, if I had access to SJ Alpha, I would definitely pay for it. I want to support the industry and all that, so if buying the volumes is the only way I can do that right now, then so be it.
-
Yeah I live in Ireland. Shit that sucks! Hopefully there will always be a site translating one piece
-
I'm confused about the legal online offerings of One Piece. Can someone give me the cliff notes? Is it possible to read Viz volumes translated into English from Vol 61 onward? Will I have to purchase online and again when the printed volume is released? It would be nice if you bought a volume and you get a code or something that lets you read the current chapters online. I hope print does not go the way of the 8track tape.
-
My two pence.
To be honest I have no objection with Viz trying to protect their license but Mangastream were the wrong target which is what angers me. They explictiy made a point of not archiving manga and actively encouraged people to buy the volumes when they were released - all to support Viz. Had they gone after the sites that archive huge collections then I would have no issue but Mangastream does not do that; it provided a service for non Japanese fans to keep up to date with the latest events in their favourite manga.
Furthemore they've basically denied the rest of the world from reading manga now, as there is no legal alternative to them. What they fail to realise is that at least half of the non Japanese manga fans reside outside of North America, in places like Europe, Oceania, Asia and South America. Before jumping the gun they could have negoitiated with Japan to secure the rights to publish WSA in all non Japan locations thus providing a legal tool (which I would be glad to use) for us to follow our favourite manga. Currently Viz has just stranded millions of fans around the world.

vizmanga.com is up to volume #64. And yes, if you buy the digital volumes you have to double-dip for physical. I'd love to see a system where you get a code for digital purchases that gives you a discount for the physical copy, and vice-versa. I think that would take quite some time to put into place though.
Also it's not the fault of VIZ that they can't release WSJ Alpha worldwide. It's up to Shueisha.
-

C'mon mate, there's really no reason to not be buying One Piece volumes when they're readily available in stores across Ireland.
However, this website comes with my highest recommedation - the volumes are cheaper than in-store and they deliver free to Ireland.
-
So are there any sites out there still scanlating it? I heard mangareader was doing it. what's their status?
-

I wish a lot of people would realize that this is the case and would stop blaming Viz because they can't get Alpha in India, Africa, etc.
-

Mangareader isn't a scanlating team.
-

Viz could always have agreed to a 'ban USA ip addresses from accessing our licensed series' kind of deal. While I can't say I know exactly what discussions have happened between the two parties, the words 'Viz Media has demanded' clearly indicate that there's no more amicable solution available in their eyes.
If I can't blame Viz for not making Alpha available in my region, I will quite blame them for killing a source of entertainment for people who could never have been their customers to begin with. Part of me really hopes the folk behind MangaStream take out a non-US server and a non-US domain, and then start doing WSJ releases there for non-US readers under the same 'last few chapters' policy they already use.
-
Mangareader isn't a scanlating team.
Sorry. I just meant if there are other teams still working on it. The team that does it for mangareader is a different one I think.
-
Here, Those of you who wana come in here to talk about the Mangastream situation, I got you covered:
"Raaaaaaaaaaaaargh, MANGASTREEEEEEEEEEEEEAM GOT TAKEN DOOOOOOOOOOOWN! I can't Illegally steal peoples' wooooooooooooork nooooooooooow like I feel I'm entitled tooooooooooooo! RANT RANT BITCH BITCH!"
There, done. I said it for you so you don't have to. So now, let people talk about Viz's actually releases now, k? K.
-
Lmao, paying to read and being behind in chapters when you could actually be up to date and read for free.

Translation: I feel I'm entitled to Free One Piece even tho I'm intended to pay for it.

Seriously guys, there is a thread for Viz haters right here: http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=34817

I actually don't mind the idea of 5 bux for a volume that won't be out in hardcopy till the fall. And 26 bux for a year subscription is not bad. I just wish you could download a pdf or something of it, instead of being forced to read online, but I suppose that would defeat the purpose of making hardcopies. They offered the first 4 issues for 99 cents, so I am doing that right now. And it does take Paypal and bankwithdrawl instead of just credit card, so that's not bad. As far as translation issues are concerned, I've been reading the viz volumes of OP for a while now, so I'm used to their translation (lol zolo). I don't mind paying for it.
But if another scan group pops up with half decent translation, I'm jumpin on board hah!
-
ok stepping away from all the viz hate. so i can actually buy these so called digital manga books to get myself caught up with the series, where sjalpha is? if so, ive been meaning to get caught up with toriko
