Somehow this is relevant:

Which is good because I sure as hell don't want to get any nearer to that abomination than you do.

I forgot how crazy cute baby Spike was.

Well I destroyed Equestria with Lyra…

Started a business with Derpy. T_T
Also, I personally enjoyed the Flim-Flam Brothers song, but that may have just been because the whole time I just kept thinking of another equally great song, performed by a great character, performed by a great voice actor.
!
-
I really hope the Flim Flam brothers show up again. They were cool.
I agree that the message of this was a bit off, but what can ya do? Show progress? In a kid's show? Not in this day and age you can't. So I didn't have much of a problem with it.
-
This is kinda a side track. But I saw this http://bronies.memebase.com/2012/01/27/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-brony-super-funny-title/#comments
I was kinda curious of people's thoughts about it. Well this board's thoughts on it anyways. The comments for the image were mostly agreeing with the secondary part. And the people agreeing with the first part sort of made me think they really just missed the mark about the whole "derp" thing, automatically assumed it was making fun of a group of people.
I can see why someone that may be new to the fandom may draw similar conclusions the original artist saw, but I don't think Derpy was necessarily supposed to be mentally handicapped, just a tremendous klutz. Or that we were ever making fun of her. Was it the way she spoke? Or am I just old school and too used to that character archetype that I'm not horribly offended o_o?
-
What? This is even an issue? That's odd. It takes sort of a jump in logic to come to that conclusion, doesn't it? I never thought of it that way at all. But now that it's brought up, let's just imagine for a secondthat Derpy was seriously portrayed as having some kind of mental disorder. Isn't it kind of cool that a character like that is universally accepted by the fandom and loved by everyone? I'm not offended at all.
Anyways, on an unrelated note, I think I'm the only person who heard the Flim Flam song and thought of The Music Man instead of The Simpsons. Then again, I may be wrong.
-
It's sorta a weird…hmm. I don't know the exact word that I need. It just seems like you'll get stuck in this logic loop about her. If it was intended for her to have some sort of disability, then it seems weird to be upset, because she's being treated the same way anyone would if they caused a mess even if they didn't mean to. Dash was snippy a tad rude but she always is to anyone, so it didn't really feel like an attack or her talking down to her. Derpy being scolded didn't seem excessive or anything in other episodes.
I personally don't feel it was intended for Derpy to have a disability. ^^;; I kinda feel it was some people being very sensitive for their various reasons. I want to say it's over thinking it. But the older fandom seems to over think stuff, I know I do on some things in this show lol.
-
Who was it who agreed to bet their entire business and home? They could have easily avoided this issue in a number of ways without putting their farm on the line. Flim and Flam were assholes, but that was really only because they tried to be nice. They were mostly concerned with the financial end of things, but why wouldn't they be? After all, they probably spent a lot of time and money developing their contraption. Design, prototypes and testing take time and money. Considering the state of Equestrian technology, I wouldn't be surprised if it took them most of their lives to complete it. Sure, they got cocky in the end, but who wouldn't in their position? Plus, though the presentation would paint it differently, the Apples sacrificed working conditions before Flim and Flam cut quality control. Their ponies were essentially working like slaves. Any way you look at it, the Apple family was much worse than Flim and Flam ever were.
Let's make a deal: 75/25?
Not nice.
They may be like the Wright brothers in creating a revolutionary piece of technology, and they're concerned with the cost of developing the machine, but it still doesn't justify ruining the lives of people over a business deal. The Apples still have better character as people because they simply didn't know what they were getting themselves into. They didn't try to ignore facts, so they weren't being ignorant, just innocent. Applejack probably should have learned a great deal about sleazy business deals thanks to this episode, even though she's not really aware of it (too overjoyed at her accomplishment).
Think about it, if Flim and Flam lose their bet, what do they lose? Their stay in Ponyville, which they have no attachment to. In the end, they simply started on their way to the next town, not perturbed in the slightest. If the Apples lose the bet, they lose their home and their heritage, which is almost everything to them. They would be devastated. Flim and Flam were aware of this, yet they struck the deal without informing the Apples of their potential losses. They don't care; it's business after all. However, it is not an ethical practice, and may possibly be ruled illegal if Twilight pressed charges for the sake of her friend.
The Apples made a bunch of mistakes but should they be punished so severely for botching a verbal agreement? In nature, yes, because there is no justice in nature, just survival. However, in a just civilization, the Apples would be entitled to fair and lawful practices, so they would not deserve the loss.

@Cyan:
Pinkie Pie works at the bakery. Fluttershy's the town vet/beastmaster.
But….they already have a vet.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Was that Applejack's parents we saw in the cutie mark flashback? Or her Aunt and Uncle? It seems a bit odd to leave 3 children alone with a very old pony. And the age gaps seem enough that the parents would have had to return to the farm to drop off the next kid a few years later.
I kind of pointed this out when I saw the Cutie Mark episode. We have had episodes focusing on Apple Bloom and Granny Smith, even got backstory, but we never got any sort of idea where the parents are of where Apple Bloom came from.

Have you ever negotiated before? The offer you start with is never the offer you expect to take. It merely sets an upper bound. The bet was equally negotiable. These aren't sleazy business deals, just average business deals. Truth is that they were pretty up front about their business. A sleazy business deal would have involved a lot more words and a lot worse of a deal (control over the Apple family farms [which wasn't even in the original deal], marketing rights, an open end that would allow them to conduct business with other apple farmers, etc…). Also, if they were really innocent, they probably would have expected Flim and Flam to be better people and at least ask for a more fair deal.

Applejack pretty clearly states they barely make enough money with the cider sales to make it through winter. They would have lost their farm even with 50/50. But really, your overanalyzing this.
-
@David:

That was with their old system when they did everything themselves. With the new system using the Flyn brothers contraption, they would have been guaranteed a far greater revenue with sales happening at a much faster rate. But no, they didn't even TRY getting Twilight to crunch the numbers for her family. They just decided to stick to pony pride and stifle progress and screw everyone over without anyone realizing it. And that's why we're "overanalyzing" it. Because the show is usually much more smart with its messages and though it wasn't as bad as you'd expect, I still found it pretty annoying. I'm just really annoyed at all these shows and movies where we're expected to side with the farmers even though their terrible situation was mostly their own fault and not the "evil" land lord trying to shut them down (the worst offender of this is ironically War Horse).

They just need a few extra helping hands on the farm for cider season from now on. They really didn't screw anyone over.

They needed the power of one of the best unicorns in the land who has great management skills, two pegasi one of who is one of the fastest pegasi in the land, a pony with great intuition and a unicorn with great sorting skills JUST to be able to keep up. And I'm pretty sure it's a one time thing and Twilight and co aren't going to be joining the farm. They have their own jobs at any rate. But what's more important is the message…which is what? Slave labour is okay? Because I'm pretty effin sure they didn't get paid for their work either. Didn't Apple Jack flat out said they could barely afford the farm as things are? You think those helping hands will work for free? Don't be fooled by the sappy ending. The fact that everyone managed to get cider was a one time thing. They'll be back to their abysmally slow rate after this, customers will forget about quality and start bitching about the slow rate and Rainbow Dash will have to resort to eating dirt again. Because like Apple Jack said, she learned NOTHING.

That's because it was a competition. There is no need to work at that speed with the brothers gone. The extra money from the extra sales could be used to hire a few extra working hands(hooves:)). The main problem was that while they were running the stand, they couldn't work. If they had others working during that time, they could make enough without "slave labor."

The main problem was that while they were running the stand, they couldn't work. If they had others working during that time, they could make enough without "slave labor."
Then they fail to meet the demand, which was the issue in the first place. The limit on their earnings was their production rate. If the hire extra labor, then they either lose money or increase prices. Considering the amount of work it took to even match the machine with slave labor from incredibly capable ponies, they would need to hire quite a few in order to have reasonable work hours. If they make barely enough as it is on their own, then buying labor is just as 'bad' as paying the Flim Flam brothers at best.
-
With extra help they made enough for the whole town in only one hour. If they can do it that fast with bad conditions, I don't see why they can't do it in a few hours with good conditions. Then everyone gets some, and they make more money. And the Pinkie throws a party because why not.
-

Never said that, only said she seems slow :P
And prone to destroy buildings. None of which are assets ideal to run a business with.

Don't you think that if they could produce that much so easily, then they would? If they didn't, then what does that imply about the family business?

They were innocent. They were also stubborn.
Calling Flim and Flam shady businessmen will just unnecessarily antagonize them as exaggerated villains. So I'll stop trying to antagonize them.
However, you're argument about the brothers not having control over the farms is facetious. They clearly wanted to take over the farms on account of a single product being better than the Apples, when in fact the Apples produce far more than just apples. The implication of the brothers' attitude is that they'll be very horrible farmers who would cut quality control to sell more products.BTW, I have negotiated before, and I know it's the upper bound. However, I don't think the Apples understand negotiation. I think Rarity should have stepped in, but there will be no episode if that were the case.

The problem with th episode was… while they had a very clear "quality over quantity" moral... They never did a taste test on the good batch the machine did.
Well yes its OBVIOUS that they're going to be better than the barrells full of rocks and twigs... it would have been better if they'd made a lot of cider... that was only okay due to some aspect or another of the process.
For instance, breweries and bakeries need to keep old timber or certain work environments that add specific elements of taste that have built up a natural extra flavoring over decades of use that new stuff just can't simulate. It's pretty much the lesson they had with the zap apples where "yes, we're doing oddball things to make this process, but its whats needed to do it right." So I can see why they didn't repeat that... but its kind of what was really needed.
For us 30 year olds who are bothered by how overly simplistic the little girl's cartoon was.

The people who keep bitching about how the moral was wrong because the Apples refused technology that could have helped them seem to forget that this is a show for children.
And I don't mean this in the "it's a how for kids, let's not think about it too much" sense, but more in the sense that traditionally cartoons and movies aimed towards children always tend to overemphasize the environment and the idea of nature. Is it necessarily right that technology is evil and farmers are awesome? of course not, technological advances have led us to where we are and farmers have historically been just as responsible for damaging soil and forests. But since it's a kids show they'll obviously take the side of whatever is closest to nature, because that's what they want kids to pick up on, on being close to nature and caring for it so Earth doesn't go to hell in the future. And thus the family of the character that was reading a bedtime story to a tree wins over the business-oriented brothers that don't care about the nature as much as about the profit.
-
Don't you think that if they could produce that much so easily, then they would? If they didn't, then what does that imply about the family business?
I'm guessing they can't normally because the time spent running the stand none gets made. They run it from sunrise, to close to sundown. A few others making more cider during that time would help a lot. That's just my take on it.
-

Well Flim and Flam did state 75/25 on cider sales specifically before they got competitive. Otherwise, I think we're in agreement.

This is also why I specifically dislike it because it is on a kids show. This kind of stuff raises anti-scientific sentiment among folks. As a science kind of a guy, it peeves me to see the extraneous people that advancement keeps alive stall its progress. But this sentence is not ponies so here is a pony:
