When Tate's animation is for something goofy or comic, I don't really have any complaints, i.e. the eating scene and Usopp's Whereabouts stories (for the most part). It's when he's given something serious, like Robin's Whereabouts story, that the art really detracts from the message, in my opinion.
I strongly agree to this. Tate is great when it comes to goofy animation. Besides, Luffy was gorging himself with food to roughly 3 times his size. It's definitely on par with his hilarious fat Usopp animation – deliberatley both grotesque and comical. He really seems to have no passion for directing dramatic, actionless scenes which just appear minimalistic and little else. The problem some may have with his "good" stuff be that it is more his style than Oda's style.
I also don't have a problem with the series not having a dogmatic adherance to Oda's art. Since Oda has minimal involvement with the animated series and there is no one central animation director for the series (I'm guessing around 10 separate animation teams work simutaneously on a scene-by scene basis) it should be expected that a few animation directors end up breaking out of the cookie cutter "Oda style" and put their own interpretation in the animation and direction of a scene.
Sorta like how many people prefer the earlier somewhat more exaggerated animation of '90s The Simpsons even though Matt Groening went through great lengths to root it out of the series towards its present look.

You do realize he was stuffing his face full of food, to the point where he was bloated?
Indeed my friend, I do realize he was eating and I'm not complaining about the fill up cheek with food… but the rest.. ohh my eyeeess hurt******
I respect everyone's opinion though; but his art is just not apealling to me outside action scenes. Granted, he's great at making movements fluid but I feel that sometimes he sacrifices form over mobility. But that's just my opinion.

Seriously, why is that room filled with water? Do they not consult Oda about these important features or am I crazy?

They'll be move by a mysterious force to a room without water:ninja:…. a fixing plot device of sorts. Otherwise I can't see how Toei will handle this unless Hody destroys the castle wall as a demonstration of power and then quicly destroys their bubble... though that wouldn't be cannon at all.
-

Check it in manga, this is not how face stuffed with food was drawn…some members are saying that it was funny, i found it distracting...instead of rubber luffy was looking like an ameoba...if this tate starts making each scene of every episode, then even the fans of ameoba animation would soon become fed up with it. In previous episode shirohshi was drawn excellent but in this episode she looked like a 6 year old kid with big boobs, weird....
-
Can't complain about this episode, great pacing, nice animation!
-
The anime episode discussion is so rubbish compared to the manga chapter discussions. Most of what I see is talking about how off it looks and not the story. This also goes for the previous episode threads.
Anyways I thought this episode was much better than the previous episode with the long awkward pauses. Shirahoshi's voice actor is perfect for her; she isn't as annoying than in the manga. The Nami, Ussopp and Brooke scene was pretty badass. Plus Luffy's feasting scene was hilarious. Very good episode.

I really don't remember this bubble and the room already being filled with water stuff in the manga. <.<

Don't worry the luffy eating scene more than makes up for that mistake.
-
Oh man, Tate's stuff was great. Fluidly animated and perfectly articulated, as usual. I didn't expect to see him again so soon, but I guess it's easier for him to just do key animation on a few small scenes. Hopefully here'll do some of the upcoming battles.
I get that many people prefer fluid-animation, but I would much rather have art that resembles Oda's work, even if it meant a little less flashy animation. It just doesn't do the manga justice if it doesn't look anything like it, IMO. And its not like Tate can't do normal faces, right? From what I saw of that compilation AMV of Tate's work, the other series' didn't suffer from 'deformed characters syndrome'.

Er, the vast majority of the people reading here have also read the manga, so they're primarily interested in it as a different medium for what they already have seen.

How can you say that. This bubble is not making any sense. If we go according to anime then Neptune and other fishmen soldiers could have tear open the bubble and nami, brook, ussop were done…As they have messed up with plot so I think they would simply skip the part where hodi would break wall for water to enter into hall. And all that action scene where he throw water arrows at soldiers, would also be skipped..the zoro air slash against hodi would also be skipped...the only action they can show now is underwater fight btw hodi and zoro....but in the manga zoro surfaced for breathing after defeating hodi, in anime where he would breath?

I guess sarcasm really is hard to convey on the Internet…
If you read my post before the one you quoted you could see that I am very disappointed by the mistake.
-
A pretty enjoyable episode in my opinion, just like all the post timeskip episodes. Nothing much to complain about, all in all good.
Expect for Tate. I just cant stand how he draws people. I mostly enjoy his actionscenes, but for some reason I just hate how he draws people, especially their faces.
-
Tate is very hit and miss. In this case, I'd say he was a definite hit. Deformed as Luffy may have been, it didn't bug me. There was actual animation happening during a conversation. Compare that to last weeks two-framer Neptune-gets-scolded (a joke that was repeated twice!), and I know what I'll prefer.
Fluid animation over static boring shittiness any day. We get too much of that already! This is the anime, so I welcome any and all attempts to add animation that truly tries to improve a scene. (In other words - if they start making Nami's hair wave around or bob along with words being spoken, that's not nearly as much of an improvement.) It would have been no better if this was the typical way in which Luffy tends to be depicted eating, which is basically open-mouth-shove-plate-contents-in, and that repeated three times.

Sorry bro, actually i was pretty boiled up at these "i love luffy's eating scene, fluid animation" bullshyt so i did'nt see through your sarcasm.

@Chris:
Luffy’s misadventure there has him causing a fair bit of problems, problems that also tie into the ongoing problems the Straw Hats have been unaware of since landing in this place as they’re believed to be behind some mermaid killings.

Have yet to watch the episode, just going to point out quick to all those DEFENDING tate. Don't you find it a bit strange how EVERY single tate episode has a million people come out and complain about the bad art.
Hey you guys can defend it all you want, but you always know when there is a tate episode just by looking at the comments and seeing 90% of them someone bitching about art and another defending it. And we get it, he has great animation, we never complain about that. We just don't think having great animated stick figures is something to brag about. He sacrifices too much art quality for animation quality. I can't recognize any other person that does one piece episodes. BUT i can know when tate is doing it, and its not because of its animation quality. Its because I'm wondering the whole episode why everyone looks so strange. It just feels like someone took one piece from oda one week and drew it in their style. Just doesn't match the other 500 episodes art style.

I also hav 2 agree with Hinscher.
Luffy never looked that ugly when being fat.
It just surprises me he didn't f* up Shirahoshi, but the two ministers (especially the right, "seahorse") looked totally f*'d up and fat.
Tate is the animator who did the Robin/usoppe-separation-episodes, isn't he? He animates well, especially curly hair like Usoppe's,
but then fs up the art. But this ep he just really f'd up fat Luffy and the right minister. Rest is ok.
Nevertheless the end was pretty epic with the two villains.
Spoiler alert!:[hide]I would have been really hyped by VDD's and Hody's bond, but if u know how badly those two get pwned, it takes much hype away.[/hide]
VDD's voice is pretty good. I guess Skadi fangasmed all over her desktop.–- Update From New Post Merge ---
TBH, if u just c one episode per week, it feels like the anime of OP was better bout 5 to 7+ yrs ago (in german-languaged countries they brought episodes until #400 iirc).
But if we'd get even more than one episode per week, the art and animation would suffer even more from it.
Of course if sum animator draws a lot of animation, the episdoe lacks of good art, its logical.
Cause if u animate a char more, u have to draw him multiple times.
If u just hav 2 animate the mouth, u can put more effort into the art.I like the manga more than the anime, but I watch it cause I wanna know how accurate the anime goes with the manga. They often even use the same perspective as Oda does in each panel.
And I know why the anime stretches and fills each episode, but I'd prefer cover story - episodes like Coby's more than sum filler $hit that never happened in the manga.
Usually I also prefer story accuracy more than wild artistic freedom in a OP-episode except they explain sth relevant to the story that hasn't been fully clear in the manga due to mistranslation or other stuff.
Maybe the anime would show us the Gyojin Karate Dojo. -
This is amazing giantess fetish fuel.
Liked every scene of Shirahoshi holding Luffy in her hands and blocking his mouth with her giant fingers.

Giant Bondage Fetish! But nothing tops jumpin trampolin on gargantuan boobs.

Finally saw the episode, aww at Shirahoshi scene the voice really perfect for her, luffy eating part had bitt odd animation but i enjoyed it,Mansopp FTW and of course Zoro part was cool(althought i prefer a bit more the manga counterpart and we didnt get to see a scene with him cutting the prison tower its a shame).
Oh VDD and Hodi have such great voices liked that part with them too. -

Yeah, i didnt remember it right, thanks.
Perhaps when they reached that time the anime staff will shows us more,it would be nice filler scene to add (the escaping part). -
I really don't remember this bubble and the room already being filled with water stuff in the manga. <.<
Well if you don't remember, just reread the chapter, that's easy :p. They were under a bubble and the room was filled with water in the manga too :

Hmmm, now I feel stupid.
Don't be, it's confusing especially with this scene being shown very soon later
next chapter spoilers under so be warned

! They say all the water was removed, but it wasn't it was just a bubble, so don't get their excuse. Sounds weak. -

(which I assume you're speaking of) was almost twenty years earlier in his career. He was mainly an in-between animator before becoming a key animator and at the time he hadn't begun to find his own way. Most beloved key animators are the ones who set themselves apart from the pack and make their work evident. That's what makes Japanese animation so great, it's focused on individuality more so than staying absolutely on model. While I agree with this and found the eating scene to be the most enjoyable part of the episode (along with stuff like Robin and Usopp), I have to say that I really love Tate's older One Piece stuff where his style looked closer to Oda's art.

The thing is that in the manga, sometimes it was hard to tell where there was water and where there wasn't, not to mention the bubbles. The anime gives everything more exposition, so it's obviously much less confusing in that regard.
-
They could take a cue from Spongebob and have bubbles spurt out whenever they're underwater and moving. Easier to differentiate, since I saw none in that last scene between Decken and Hody.
-
Someone in the manga section mentioned that Oda's been hiding Franky's bounty the last two times he's shown his poster, and that may mean he's had an increase over the TS. Well if that's the case nobody told these guys.
Also not a huge fan of Funimation's new logo animation.

Huh ? Now that'll be a bit embarassing.

..as explained X times, there was no increase whatsoever.

this may be a stupid question, but why was vander decken in a bubble when visiting hody? he's a fishmen, he can breathe under water….. so why the bubble?
-
Because he is a DF user.
