Captain America

Maybe its because I don't religiously read Captain America or maybe its because I have been so spoiled with such good comic book movies like Iron Man and X Men First Class (and anyone who says this is the best comic book movie of the summer REALLY needs to watch First Class again) but I walked out of the theater very disappointed. It was a decent enough comic book movie but as someone who has enjoyed how Marvel has seemed to now dedicate itself to making good movies as opposed to just good comic book movies (there's a big difference) it failed for me.
Now for the breakdown:
! The first 30 minutes or so were great; liked the unique spin on the Bucky-Steve relationship, loved the never-give-up attitude that Steve had, and especially liked how Erskine was portrayed and the scenes he shared with Steve. The training sequence was great, the jump on the bomb scene was great, everything Tommy Lee Jones did was great. Overall a fantastic start and things quickly progressed to Rogers getting the serum and having a nice chase scene demonstrating his powers, and then…...the plot comes to a grinding stop and nothing important happens for what seemed like an eternity. Was him dressing up in the classic Cap costume and doing commercials really necessary in any way to the plot!?!??! It was funny at first but then it just got so boring and I caught my mind just wondering off.
! Finally we get to an action scene were Cap breaks out all the prisoners out and Hugo Weaving (whose German accent kept changing so much that I almost stopped listening to anything he was saying) decides its a good idea to blow up everything because he's "outmatched" by a guy he has only seen in crappy American commercials (seriously how the hell does he know he has the serum if the spy dude died in the beginning?) and prisoners who Zola said were barley strong enough to power the "machine" (BTW did we ever see anything else about this "machine" any where again?). And we meet the new people who Cap teams up with, spend time introducing them, showing them in a montage and never show again giving no reason for them to exist in this movie at all. And that brings us to Bucky and what can only be described as one of the most laughably bad deaths I've seen in a movie in a while. After giving him a great intro in the beginning of the movie he spends the rest of it being MIA and comes back only to be featured in a montage and severely underdeveloped and we are supposed to give a damn when he dies? Especially when you immediately cut to a mostly comical scene with Tommy Lee Jones right after!! The rest of the movie is alright, good fight scenes, Cap throwing his sheild around, the world being at stake (by what exactly I can only guess because all we see is what I can only assume to be Cube powered Nukes because its never explained in the story what the hell they are!!!), and a climactic ending. The last sacrifice kind of felt flat because the relationship between Steve and Peggy or Betty or whatever was incredibly boring and that last exchange killed all emotions I had about it.
! I think the romance between Cap and Carter was the lowest point of the movie and should have been eliminated all together. God forbid a comic book movie doesn't have a romance but if you are going to do it this is the movie to do it in because your setting the character up to now live 70 years into the future making all past relationships mean nothing to the current story line. What should have replaced that romance was the relationship between Bucky and Cap. Build on it, play with the fact that it was role reversal for the two of them and have Bucky resent it for a time then overcome it and accept his sidekick role by ultimately sacrificing his life to save Cap's at the end of the movie. It would be a hell of a lot better of a death than falling off a railing screaming and falling to your death as a character nobody cares about. This would also make Cap's sacrifice more meaningful as he would say something like he was about to see Bucky again or something. It would have been a MUCH better way to handle the character than the way they did.So in total it wasn't a bad movie but it certainly wasn't one of Marvel's recent best. Probably deserves to be just a tad bit lower than Thor and in a complete different pantheon than Iron Man and First Class.

I've only known about Captain America from superhero cartoons and movies, but still this was an impressive movie! I wouldn't be surprised if it makes some new fans. Despite the material my suspension of disbelief was never broken. I love how they developed Cap in this movie and built him into a larger then life character.
! I love the chase scene after Cap got his abilities. It was such a great example of what the guy can do. What I loved most was the start, where he caught up to a car not by outrunning it, but by constantly thinking on his feet and cutting corners until he could get into range. Then it was just one cool display of skill after another. First he stops a car. Then he saves a funny kid. Then, finally, he swims and catches the guy, which I loved cause that's just such a great display of athleticism. It's just all those details that make special what could have been a much simpler, shorter, and subsequently boring scene.

! I'm NOT ALONE! YES!!! Bucky didn't do much of anything!
! I disagree with the plane part though, the acting could've been better, but I still felt a nice bit of emotion out of it. Also.. the Howling commandos are the ones who bust through the walls and save Rogers from getting shot (well, by distraction). So they are there for the final battle, we don't get close ups or anything though.I felt First Class was really cheesy… in A LOT of ways. It may have been a good movie but I found a lot scenes way too painful. Just like the Captain America broadway part.
I can't hold either in a higher regard...

First Class > Captain America >>> Thor >>>>>>>>>>>>>> lolantern
First Class and Cap were both really great, but FC takes the edge because of the Magneto/Xavier bromance. Thor, in hindsight, was painfully cliche in a lot of ways but it still had a lot of heart and great performances all around. Green Lantern ahahahahaha.

I agree there were some cheesy scenes in First Class, most came with the secondary younger X men members but the fantastic portrayal of the Magneto/Xavier relationship along with the great acting of Fassbender and McAvoy propels this movie to greatness for me.
-
I don't have a problem with the cheese. It's nice to see a movie that doesn't take itself 100% seriously amongst all the Dark Knight wannabees.
-
Maaan i wanna see this movie like … now!
It's another 3 whole weeks until we can see it in Germany. Every other country gets it next week except for a few exceptions.
That sucks ... well, at least they kept the title. -
Oh man, I wonder how they'll take this in Germany . . . .
-
I've seen the movie yesterday and it was quite good, but i didnt liked the ending. I know the reason behind it but still. In any case there are much better marvel movies then this one but it beats Thor :)
-
Saw it a few hours ago. Pretty damn awesome. I never knew much about Marvel superheroes, let alone Captain America. I'm not exactly a fan of comics, but I do prefer DC (mostly due to Batman). Still, both are kick-ass.
I'm so seeing the Avengers, though. Sucks that I missed the post-credits scene.
-
Oh man, I wonder how they'll take this in Germany . . . .
I felt like they were trying really hard to emphasize that Red Skull and Hydra was the villain, not Germany, it was still a very cliche, caricaturized depiction of Nazi Germany, though.

Well, I think Germany has pretty much acknowledged that, yes, that was a really bad time in their history and what Hitler did was an abomination. Also, I don't think there was anything truly offensive to Germans in this movie, and it's not like we haven't gone down this road before with Indiana Jones.
Oh yeah, and great movie BTW.

Saw it recently
Very good, a nice origin film. It nice to actually see Cap doing something in one of his movies (The 90's one just left me confused). Nothing real mind blowing mind you and the story fairly linear but I enjoyed it nonetheless and love the continuity nods. The last scene especially was very heartbreaking.
So yeah with all that prep work finally out of the way, bring on The Avengers.
-
Oh yeah, I really enjoyed the movie. I have a difficult time deciding which I liked the best, between Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America and I am stoked for The Avengers.
I never saw the 1990's Captain America movie. I remember seeing posters for it back in the late 90's and then never heard anything about it again. I assumed it was canceled but apparently it was really bad and went straight to video. I think that whole situation soured me a bit in the back of my mind on the idea of a Captain America movie, but they certainly did everything right this time. -
Neither Thor or Captain America can beat Iron Man, imo, but they're up there. I think it's partly due to RDJ being so born to play the role. Chris Evans is a great Cap, but he doesn't embody the character as much as RDJ does. Seriously, it's almost like all the shit RDJ went through beforehand was preparing him to play Tony Stark.
I'm highly looking forward to Cap and Tony's interaction, as they're going to haaaaate each other.
-
Or will they? :ninja:

Sneaky Zack, but thats Iron WOMAN, from an alternate universe/continuity.
But at a glance its an… interesting image.
-
Oh, I saw Cap last Friday! I loved it! Everyone's right though. It wasn't as good as Iron Man, but MAN….it's hard to compete with RDJ. As of late, he makes any movie good.
Loved Chris Evans. Loved Bucky. Loved Peggy. Loved Tommy Lee Jones. Just...fun movie.
Can't wait for Avengers.
Also, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought Cap and Stark were best buds. Yeah, they bump heads, but they're pretty close friends. I thought Hulk and Stark bumped heads.

Cap and Stark?
Civil War.Hulk and Stark?
Oh yeah, you're right. HULKBUSTERRRRR.Hell, Thor and Stark?
Thorbuster armor, Civil War (and when Thor returns after. He was pissed.)Those are ones that I can think of, but all-in-all, I think Iron Man is a pretty big douche.

It's what I discover when I end up looking at Tvtropes for too many categories.

I know, I can't wait to see what happens when they put the two together. That little "Got a mean swing" comment was probably an indication ^^ Kind of an odd thing to have known his father before he was born, and be biologically younger at that. Sort of.

Wasn't that "Got a mean swing" from Iron Man to Thor…?
-
Yeah you're right, it was Thor, I found the trailer again, for some reason when I saw it in the theaters I swear it was a guy with short hair rather than long hair Probably because I just got done seeing 2 hours of Captain America. Still funny though!

i think iron man wins because it feels so much like something WE can do.
i mean we can NEVER be thor and captain america gets some insane drug.
BUT iron man, he is still just a NORMAL human like batman and with technology these days it gives the ILLUSION that this is possible.
like who after iron man or batman movies thinks man i want to make some sweet ass gadgets or a suit.
meanwhile things like iron man/hulk/superman and so on are just awesome and only wild daydreams let us be them.
as for captain america its not so much a stretch, but leaving more gives you a sense like leaving a 300 movie. damn i want to go to the workout center, lol.

captain America swam faster than a sub though, so it was pretty crazy.

Iron Man built a suit of armor in a cave with a box of scraps. Truly relate-able.

This is a minor thing, but I got the impression he caught the sub before it could gain speed. It seemed to be going pretty slow otherwise.

LOVED this movie!! I loved who they picked to play Steve Rogers, he was a good choice. So many great moments, the story was very well done. I particularly loved how Cap fought, the movements were perfect, and I like how they designed his suit. I have still not seen Thor or X-Men First Class, but I definitely want to. Really excited about Avengers too! Finally, super hero movies are being done right. Yeah, definitely up there with Iron Man.
At first I was skeptical about a new Spiderman movie, then realized for one, the third one sucked and they are using a different universe/storyline for the reboot. So it may actually be a major improvement and I am curious to see where that goes.
-
Just saw this today and was pleasantly surprised. It was competently made and the cast was just outstanding. Seriously, the great performances by the cast made a decent movie much, much better.
-
Oh yeah, Hugo Weaving was so awesome. Though I think he actually looked more intimidating with his real face than the skull face.
And the skinny -> badass effect was well done, until I read about it afterwards I had no idea how they pulled that off.

Yea I thought that too. It reminded me of Willem Dafoe in the first Spiderman. Definitely scarier without the mask in both cases.
-
Saw it today. Enjoyed it a lot.
I didn't like how they blew people up into energy to please the 3D people though, like Deathly Hallows' evil characters' deaths. And I really didn't like how they brought Steve into the present day. I get it was needed to fit the Avengers film timeline, but I thought man this is all going so well, and then he runs out into Times Square …
I can see the set ups for sequels though. I thought Bucky'd been set up, and wouldn't be dead but the timeskip sort of just negated that. And I wonder if they'll follow the comics with the Red Skull's 3 incarnations? I guess he can't be Nazi and then a Communist now (as wiki tells me)
I don't have a problem with the cheese. It's nice to see a movie that doesn't take itself 100% seriously amongst all the Dark Knight wannabees.
The soundtrack for that montage bit 'Star Spangled Man' sounds great. I've been youtubing it on repeat since I got home.
-
Was decent at worst and good at best. A solid marvel film, ranking in somewhere around fifth place overall.
-
Finally saw it and liked it a lot. Probably the best of the Avengers tie-in movies after Iron Man.
The cast was great. I was quite surprised that Chris Evans fit the role that good. After a few minutes in his costume he was Captain America for me, just like Downey is Iron Man and Hemsworth is Thor. But the rest of the cast really worked great as well. Tommy Lee Jones gave a solid performance ("I won't kiss you!") and Hugo Weaving nailed it as Red Skull.
It seemed to me like they were really trying to get the Nazis out of this and focus on Hydra completely. I can imagine why they changed it, but i found it unnecessary. The "death" of Red Skull was a bit disappointing but it at least gives me hope that he will return in Avengers or Cap 2.
-
I thought Tommy Lee Jones seemed kind of tired, and a bit out of place. Sometimes i got the feeling that he was acting out another movie.
-
Tommy Lee Jones was being Tommy Lee Jones. I thought he looked fine. He certainly got all the best lines.
-
Tommy Lee Jones was being Tommy Lee Jones.
Yeah that's probably what irked me. The way he stood out from the rest always brought me out of the moment and made me remember that i was watching actors.
-
Finally saw it. Overall pretty okay, Cap and Skull were some interesting characters to watch. The first two thirds were excellent, but after he got his proper shield, it went downhill fast in the third act. The transition into action scenes were quite jarring, and come the end I could not take Hydra serious as villains. At all. Everyone kept talking about how oooooh they're a big threat and Weawing is gonna destroy the world, but damn, they didn't deliver in the slightest in that regard. "cut off one and two more will take its place!" ahahaha, no. And one plane? seriously? Weak.
As were caps mulitethnic nameless side character brigade. And Rogers just seemed to lose a lot of his personality. I may be off here, but is Captain America supposed to kill so many people? I thought he was the marvel-verses Supes. When Rogers mourns in the movie and declares that he wants all Hydra dead or captured I was quite certain he'd get a lecture about vengeance but….nothing happened. It was weird.
Overall the strong firsts acts save it; they have the better pacing and characterization. Really, I'd propably have been more satisfied had it ended after the rescue mission.
-

In the Golden Age Captain America comics Cap was dropping fools left right and center, considering at the end of the day he's a soldier at war it makes sense. It wasn't until Stan Lee brought him back for the Avengers that he stopped killing people, and even then theirs a few exceptions.
-
So because War and because Nazis. Figured as much. I just thought it was kind of out of charcter, considering he said earlier that he "didn't want to kill anyone", and that he was chosen because of his pure, gentle nature and stuff like that.
-
Huge comic book fan here and I've been excited for all the movies for Marvel Cinematic Universe since the after credits scene of Iron Man 1.
This is my personal favorite of the MCU movies. The entire cast was enjoyable in the characters that they played, Chris Evans played an amazing Cap and it truly pulled together the feel of a 1940s period piece. But like others before it this film of course has it's problems. I think that after Cap does his first rescue mission the film dips in quality that it never quite recovers from, not to say it becomes a bad film but it had some pacing problems after that. It could've maybe used another 15-20 minutes of breathing room similar to how Thor needed that as well. Also we could've used a little more interaction between Bucky and Cap so that people could've actually cared when he got "killed."
Something I've noticed though, and this is for all the MCU movies so far is that it looks like Marvel's plan isn't trying to make the next Dark Knight or something of that nature, which is perfectly fine. But instead trying to make all of these characters likable in their own movies so that when Avengers rolls around everybody can be on board. And if there's one thing this movie did right was make Steve Rogers a likable, charming soldier which is exactly what they need to make Captain America work.
I've seen this movie 4 times since it's been in theaters, and wouldn't mind seeing it again. And I definitely can't wait for Avengers.
-
Yeah, one thing Marvel has been very savvy about is to NOT try to emulate Nolan's Batman-verse. Because none of the Avengers are Batman, and thus should not have the kind of dark, gritty tone that really only Batman can truly pull off. So they're going for crazy and fun.
-
Yeah and that's probably why I enjoy them so much. I like both Marvel & DC, though I'm a bigger Marvel fan at heart. Also the big thing with Batman now is being dark, brooding and gritty and I can only take so much of that you know. I'm a bigger fan of Brave & the Bold than I am of B:TAS for example, but of course both are very different shows so they shouldn't be compared in the first place.
-
So I finally saw this excellent movie (very late I know but I refuse to watch anything in 3D and I waited till it came out in my local theatre which releases oldish movies in 2D).
Fantastic movie. Simply fantastic. Definitely my favorite super hero film to date, yes even more than Iron Man. I don't know why, I'm into more selfish jackass heroes like Tony, but there was something so enriching and inspiring about Steve Rogers and his heart of gold. Yes he's a real nice guy but he wasn't pompous or over-zealous about it, he was just nice because he truly felt it was the right thing to do.
Just from the first two minutes, I knew this movie would be great. The Red Skull proving himself to be such a competent and hateful villain (though he fell pretty flat after that). Then we switch to Steve Rogers who I swear they couldn't have found a better guy to play. So emphatic, so endearing and his relationship with Erskine was so touching. Really, the first act was so full of heart. That talk he had with Steve really pulled the heart strings especially since I knew he was gonna die. And that final tap at the end of his life, so beautiful. Peggy was awesome, it's so great to see a competent female.
The chase scene was really well done and very clever. With the spy blowing up a car to distract Peggy and her still having the skills to shoot the driver dead even with the extra distance. And Steve using smarts to catch up with the car instead of just out-running it. Only thing I didn't like was how he almost let himself get shot like an idiot if it weren't for dumb luck but to be fair , I was starting to think whether the spy was ever gonna run out of ammo and it was his first time. That kid was awesome though. "It's okay, I can swim. Get him!!!" What a truly refreshing, hilarious and clever little move there.
The movie really dragged for a bit after that and it was it's weakest part imo. Better to have used that time to give us more epic Cap and Howling Commandos raids than that. Cap punching Hitler 200 times was much appreciated though (even if it was a fake).
Cap's first raid was an interesting, much needed and appreciated venture as it set up one of the most epic rivalries in the marvel universe. And it was so tastefully done with the retracting bridge over the blazing inferno and Red Skull took off his mask. The Howling Commandos were awesome, I didn't know they were important (I'm not well-versed in the comics), I thought it was the writers being writers and just taking a bunch of random soldiers and making them awesome just because. Those montages of Cap and the commandos was so cool, we really needed more of them.
The train scene was really intense, I loved Bucky and Steve's bromance. I must be one of the very few that liked and cared for Bucky. I really liked how Cap didn't bail him out (really all the characters were great especially at how competent they were, that they worked with Cap instead oh him having to do everything. The general, Bucky, Peggy, the Commandos. All were great and had their time to shine imo) but how they worked together to give a very clever action scene. I don't think his death was lame at all. He went out like a hero, fighting to save his friend in a battle vital to get the intelligence needed to finally get to the Red Skull. His death was actually pretty horrifying to me actually. It was so raw and visceral. Really all the deaths were like that. It wasn't tip-toed around or softened or anything. They just happened. Especially the normal soldiers. How we saw both sides take casualties right in front of our eyes and they didn't just get shot but disintegrated even. And really, that's one of the strongest points of the movie imo. How death isn't skirted around. Even Cap killed people which I don't see as a contradiction but an acceptance of the reality of war. In war, people die and Cap trying to play nice guy all the time would have only gotten himself killed. Sometimes justice is cruel.
That solo raid Cap did was so cash, it was really fun to just see him be badass and go berserk on some Hydra ass. His confrontation with Skull was epic. Skull asking him what was special about him and Cap saying he was a normal kid from Brooklyn in essence rejecting Skull's maniacal notions that power was a divine right to only those who were born special enough for it. No wonder he started beating the shit out of him. I loved that scene with Cap chasing the plane with the Red Skull's own car. Ha. That kiss with Peggy was so sad because you know it was the first and only one:( I liked General's clever driving skills with not only pulling the break but swivelling around and pressing the accelerate at the opposite direction (and his quip about kissing lol).
The plane scene was great for the most part but was that scene with Cap jumping out for an aerial battle really necessary? Just for some fodder? He's lucky he managed to hijack the plane at all. He could have easily been thrown off. It was cool and all (especially with Skull shooting at him) but him crashing back right to where he started really drove home the thought that it was kinda pointless.
His final fight with Skull was great. They were both evenly matched, as they should be, showed some cool stuff and ended with Cap's iconic use of his shield. I don't think Skull died though (I'm fine with it if he did, he would have died by a force he was so ambitious to control) but I don't think he died but he was teleported a la Loki (speaking of, I really like all the little Easter eggs that tied the cannon together, the Norse mythology, the cosmic cube which might be where Tony's own power core came from etc.)
The final sacrifice was great. Especially with how Cap didn't even need to think about it. He had his regrets but he just couldn't let his home and all those people die. How he put his pendant of the woman he loved in front of his face (a really nice, human touch that), those touching parting words (all the dialogue was really well written by the way), simply wonderful.
His reawakening was really shocking and jarring (as it should be, we're feeling what he's supposed to be be feeling). It also, in a way, was a perfect resolution to a tragic, ancient hero. Steven Roger's characterization was really well done imo. From a nice, well-meaning, normal guy to a a more mature, jaded hero yet still in his very core, he is still that good man with a golden heart. However despite his well intentions, he still lost everything. His mentor, his best friend, the woman he loved and even the wonderful city that he loved and grew up in, Brooklyn. Pretty sad:( The ending was pretty silly though "I had a date." Sigh, wouldn't it have been better to end it with him dancing with a 100 year old Peggy? I'm surprised they didn't end it with that, I guess she did simply die before he woke up. Pretty brutal.
Still overall great movie and a wonderful experience. It's been a while since a movie made me feel so refreshed and elated.
-
Here's to hoping Steve makes it to his next date ;)
I didn't really find that line silly…considering what his last remembered moments were. A very rude awakening indeed.
