sorry if this has been discussed, just delete thread if so.
is it possible that the giant in robin's flashback could be luffy's grandfather? i know it sounds absurds considering he's a giant and luffy..isn't so giant. but the giant is dressed similar to luffy and luffy has great chemistry with the giants. plus aokiji (who is in the flashback) mentioned he had some kinda runin with his g-pa i think. so yeah…
Luffy's g-pa…
-
-
yeah he did and i thinl the same thing. Tho i kinda wanted him to be related to roger

From the Viz Graphic novels:
Vol. 1 "Romance Dawn" pg. 5-GolD. Roger smiling at his execution.
Vol. 8 "I Won't Die" pg. 66- Luffy smiling as he shatters Don Krieg's armor.
Just paint a handlebar moustache on Luffy and tell me the pics DON'T look similar to you.
Remember also, that everyone ever born has had two grandfathers, even if one or both of them dies before their grandchildren's birth. We don't know which of Luffy's grandfathers gave Kuzan difficulty.

Interesting and random thought. Roger's last name could be an abbreviation for an animal (consistent with the other "D" last names).
Gol D. Roger can be (mis?)translated as Gor D. Roger, right? Perhaps, short for Gorilla? I mean, Roger does KINDA look big enough to be compared to one…and that fits in with Luffy being a Monkey.
-
Hmm, might fit too, considering 'Gojira' means something like 'Gorilla-Whale'.
-
lol gorilla -> monkey lol makes sense! nice theory
so what is ace's?
portgas D. ace
what anime is portgas? might be better as chimpanzee

I can't be sure about Ace, but Absolute Anime translates "Portgas" as "Puma", which works for continuity, I guess, because Saul's last name is "Jaguar".

Roger= Luffy's Grandfather
Saru= Luffy's Great Uncle -

"Gold" Roger established the word "gold." If Oda tried to work "gor" in then it wouldn't make sense.

Well since we´re at it, I´m going to through in a very very silly thought about Gol D. Roger.
Well since I´m in the spanish mood lately I thought I could look at Rogers name from the same perspective. And yep, gol is the spanish spelling of the term goal (DO-DO-N!!!)!!!
Well I guess that stupid discovery speaks for itself so I´ll leave it like that. XD

while we're at it, the G of Gol is the 7th letter of the alphabet. like the SEVEN shishibukai. and L is the 12th letter of the alphabet, and when you make 12 - 7, you have 5, like the FIVE gorousei!
and the O is the 15th letter of the alphabet. and when you make 15-12, you have 3 and when you make 3+7, you have TEN! and when you consider that the D. is for "minus one", then you obtain NINE! which is the number of cipher pols! how amazing!!!
i couldn't resist…
-
You know, if you would have somehow turned that 15 - 12 = 3 into the Three Admirals then your post would have been perfect!!! :laugh:

yeah, true. but i wanted to add some stupid meaning for the D.
oh and while we're at it (again!), did you see the analogy between op and lotr? 3 rings for the elves, 3 admirals, 7 rings for the dwarves, 7 shishibukais, 9 rings for the humans, 9 cipher pols XD

you math geniuses you. tsk tsk.

Hey, hey!! There´s two things that don´t mix well no matter what and thats the two terms Ivotas and math´s. :wacko:
If you want to tsk me for anything, then languages would be the better choice. XD
did you know that you could also be called 0ne? (Ivotas knows why)
Seems that you´re also good with languages and not just numbers.

3, 7, 9, and 12 are the magic numbers in fairy tales and mythology (at least in Europe), which is why Lord of the Rings use them. So if this is the usual numbers in Japanese mythology as I have assumed, the numbers have never surprised me, just waiting for the twelve something.

ein means one in german.
zwei -> two
drei -> threegerman lesson of the day
and to not be off topic: luffy's grandpa is german!

12 is my fave number ever. i hope there's a 12 something. the genei ryodan of hxh was great for that (ok, they were 13, 12 + the boss)
never forget that the 12/12/2012 at 12H12 something absolutely great will happen on earth.
-
While what you say is not wrong igalsfy I have to step in just in case people get the wrong impression.
The number 1 is actually eins in german. However ein also means one, but not in the context when you count one, two, three (eins, zwei, drei in german), but like say stuff like "Er ist nur ein Mann" which means "he is just one man".
I hope I was able to show the difference between ein and eins.

my editor one thought that e1n has to do with natural logs and exponential. i literally LOL'd.

Which came from Biblical refrences, such as the trinity, the twelve disciples and Tribes of Israel, and seven is frequently used as the number of perfection (recall God resting on the seventh?). I'm not sure if 9 has a Biblical background to it, though…

Harharhar, I just knew someone would try to come in and say this, so I've prepared a comeback.
@Malintex:
We're making speculative inferences, here. Reaffirming my foundation does little to undermine my hypothesis.
Don, dumbarse. ~w

While on the subject of weird stuff, "Roger" means, I think, "skilled with a spear". Funny how the Pirate King was executed, eh?

Interesting. Aztecs predicted the world would end on 12/22/2012…or was it 12/12/2012? Hmm, maybe I should look this up...

I don´t know what this event is said to be but I consider number plays of such kind among the siliest things that is out there. If there should be anything to it then it should have happened on the 12/12/1212 at 12H12, just as all that Nostradamus 666 crap should have happened at the end of the year 999 instead of 1999. XD

You sure it was the Aztecs? Of what I know their calendar is completely different to ours and according to it the years repeat themselves. They shouldn´t actually be aware of our timeline so I find it hard to believe that they could found any predictions based on it.

yeah i know something marvelous must have happened on that day. but, well, i have to find a purpose in my life XD
for the ein/eins, yeah i forgot about it. i've always been a sucker at german. but i can clearly remember these adds, late in the night, on the german tv with that girl saying: "mmmh, ich bin schmutzig, und allein, ruf an!"

You can´t imagine how hard you´ve made me laugh right now. :laugh: Respect!!!

I believe he was refering to the Mayan calendar, though the Aztec calendar was quite similar; it was probably based upon the Mayan calendar. The Mayans extensivly studied the movements of the stars and planets and came up with a couple of different calendars. Their calendar measuring a solar year was accurate to within minutes, easily the most sophisticated calendar of its time.
Their main calander however, ran on a different time period than a solar year. It consisted of 20 weeks of 13 days each. It also had a specific amount of time for which it would run, approximatly 5125 years. Now, we don't know for certain when the start date was, but those who study the culture have generally agreed that the calendar's begginning was August 11th, 3114 B.C. Now if that's right, it would mean the end date will be December 21st, 2012, which is also that year's winter solstace. What this means, I can't really say. I do think it's an interesting date seeing as how central their rather advanced calendar was to their society, and I know I'll be quite attentive when that day finally arrives.
PS - Sorry for the Off Topicness, this is just one of those things that really interests me.

i dont think luffy's grandpa could be saul.
it was foreshadowed very early on when he got his 30 million beli bounty, and they flashed to the reaction in his old village and the mayor saying something along the lines of "thats his destiny" pretty much implying his father/grandfather is a pirate or associated with pirates. Mostly implied throughout the story as his grandpa being roger.
Aokiji could have met roger, he was a vice admiral in the robin flashback, and we all know she is much older then the other mugiwara's therefore roger was still alive in her early childhood.
-
Why would Kuzan, a military officer with incredible ice powers, owe Roger a favor? Roger would have beaten the ever-loving snot out of Kuzan in one blow. You can't be Pirate King and not be able to defeat almost anything that anyone could possibly throw at you. Luffy has single handedly defeated Crocodile, Bellamy, Don Krieg, Eneru, Kuro, etc., without direct help from his crew. Granted, they helped him in some instances, like Nami driving the Waver so Luffy could reach Eneru, and other such instances, but Luffy has always dealt with the main bad guy, and has come out victorious. Luffy may lack many other qualities that a leader needs to survive, but he is not a coward nor a quitter. The only person he will run from is Smoker, because he can't fight Smoker. The first time, however, he tried his best to hit the Captain, but failed miserably.
Luffy and Roger are very similar in spirit, meaning Roger had to have defeated all of the biggest "bad guys" that came along. Whitebeard is the only man in Odachii (That's the name I'm giving to this world) to even come out even with Roger. Considering all the badasses in the world, that says a lot. As far as we know, Roger or Whitebeard never ate a devil fruit, so that says a lot about their ability.
However, I do think Roger ate a Devil Fruit that counteracts all devil fruits. It basically allows him to nullify his opponent's devil fruit effects, so he can hit Logia users without having to resort to alternative means.
Okay, back on topic. The only way I can see Kuzan owing Roger a favor is if Roger spared his life; that is, they fought, Kuzan got his ass beat (Bad), and Roger spared Kuzan from death.
Btw, anyone here think Kuzan and Sengoku are related? Maybe father-son? It would explain a lot of things, including why Kuzan is so lazy…
-
It'd amuse me of Kuzan and sengoku were related
-
I fail to see why everyone's so inclined on Gol D. Roger as Luffy's grandfather. There's more evidence about Saul being Luffy's grandfather now, and knowing Oda, he would simply say something in an SBS along the lines of "Well, Luffy is related to Saul. He has the heart of a giant!"
It'd amuse me of Kuzan and sengoku were related
Why, because of the 'fro thing? I just thought that was Oda's nod to the 1970's; he was really young at the time, like Robin, and everyone had big hair.
-
So does anybody think Gol D. Roger was a giant(half) too? I do. It would make sense for him to be able to take on Whitebeard. And after what Sauro or whatever the hell his name is, said it would make sense.
I think he and Roger were like brothers or something. I really would like to know where Teach fits into all this. I think it would be easier to figure out who is his grandfather.
-
@_Meh_:
Hmm, might fit too, considering 'Gojira' means something like 'Gorilla-Whale'.
Gojira = Godzilla o.o

anyway on topic:
im one of the advocates of saul being luffy's grandpa theory…
wouldn't it make sense? i mean, aokiji clearly said "he dealt with luffy's grandpa long time ago"…and the recent robin's flashback has been "long time ago"...besides, i think when he said that luffy and his grandpa is alike, i think he was alluding to their love for robin regardless of her past or how government is after her.
-
I don´t understand why the "a long time ago" must indicate that it is Saul. 20 years ago Aokiji was a Vice Admiral which means that he must have been in the Marine a long time before to deserve that rank. I´ll give him at least 10 more years of a Marine officer. So if he is at least 30 years a Marine officer then he could have should have dealt with a lot of people a long time ago not just with Luffy´s gramps.
As a matter of fact, he dealt with little Robin also "a long time ago" but that hardly makes her Luffy´s grandpa does it? I mean to work yourself up to Vice Admiral already you better should have dealt with a lot of people. You don´t get that rank for doing nothing after all.
-
Didn't Ao Kiji said that he looked like his grandfather? Well, Saulo doesn't looks like "open minded", or "absent minded", as Mr. Kiji said.
But about Roger we can't tell anything.
So I'm beting on Roger, you know.
-

Roger is a pretty big guy. Even the executioners couldn't help but shudder when he turned up at the platform.

Grr I clicked "go advance" after i wrote something and it was deleted >:(
I "drew" a chart but since it wasn't posted correctly i'll just word it.
Gold Roger and Saulo are both the grandfathers of luffy and ace. Luffy's and Ace's mom or dad on Roger's side was human. Ace and Luffy's mom or dad on Saulo side was a half giant, and black beard is their uncle on Saulo's side, who is also a half giant.
Ace and Luffy would be 1/3 giant since their mom/dad was a human and their mom/dad was 1/2 giant, which equals 1/3 giant, in my eyes atleast. Black Beards size makes him lean towards Saulo side, and he seemed fimilliar to luffy in jaya, as if they were aquainted before to suggest he's part of the family(met at a family reunion mabye?).
I never liked the idea of Gold Roger as Lufy's grandfather since it would be too cliche for my taste, and I always saw his actions mimicing Gold Roger as saying "he's going to be the next gold roger", and not "he's following in his grandfathers footsteps", but either ways works so it made sense to put him in there. And as posted before Aokiji dealt with his granfather a long time ago, which makes me think is Saulo.
So yeah Luffy and Ace are 1/3 giant. Ace is chasing after their 1/2 giant uncle. And Gold Roger and Saulo are their grandfethers. In my eyes atleast. :)
-
That makes them 1/4 giant, but anyway. I doubt Luffy is Roger's grandson, mainly becuase that's the sort of thing shonen protagonists boast about. He'd have probably referred to him as his grandfather sooner or later. Unless he doesn't know who his Grandfather is, but then he wouldn't have reacted to Kuzan's remark, no knowing his Grandfather. Or, if it was Roger, I'd have expected a look of pride on Luffy's eyes ("You say you dealt with my grandfather? He died when he wanted to, you wouldn't have had a chance, otherwise" or something like that).
And Luffy breaking a sweat at that moment… I prefer to think Luffy's grandfather was a dark figure, someone who did the unspeakable (whatever that may be), and Luffy doesn't want the subject touched, -
Luffy's Grandfather is going to be a Gorousei :laugh:
Well Gol D. Roger could be one of Luffy's grandfather the one he (Luffy) never knew about (I don't think so but then again I could be wrong)
About Sauro there still somethings that are unknow about him, so he still was both options available (being or not being Luffy's Grandfather Kuzan talked about)
-
Saul is my bet right now for Luffy's granddad, although he does have two, so the other one can be Roger(which also makes sense).
Luffy and Ace, with Saul as a grandad, would be 1/4 giant(assuming Blackbeard is their dad and from Saul's side(a leap in logic with no proof, but it connects all the D's), he'd be 1/2 giant(which could explain his large stature).
-
Luffy's Grandfather is going to be a Gorousei :laugh:
This is disturbingly possible. Also, I forgot who talked about boasting, but Luffy might not want to boast–he might want to become a pirate on his own name, not his ancestor's
