that the reason why people dont watch One Piece is because of the dub….I mean i heard in japan its really famous....more than Naruto from what i heard....i like both anime but if i had to choose one it might be One Piece because of the story...even i like the story in Naruto as well. back to the topic i want to know your answer.
Do you think….

simple answer is yes, the non-simple answer is that Al Kahn deserves to be butt raped by a charizard!

Well, if One Piece got a better dub company, it would've been one of the greatest anime dubs in America.
-
Two reasons why people may not like One Piece:
1. The Dub
2.Not for all cases, but a majority of haters probably dislike the fact that One Piece actually has an extensive story, as opposed to Naruto, which although good, has fights just about every chapter. -
Naruto's getting more popular as I see it… In some magazines, they just give a review on One Piece and that's all. Then when Naruto came, they just go all over it. pretty unfair.
-
Fight junkies, it's all about the fight junkies. No offense to fans here, its just what I have seen. It's mostly people who dislike Anime if there isn't violence every minute.
-
1. The Dub
2. Lack of angsty/depressing/emo themes and/or characters
3. The style
4. No magic
5. No Bishonen/jo -
"Hello there! Oh, I see you like anime!"
"Why yes, I do. Very much, in fact."
"What would be your favorite?"
"Oh, well, some Fruits Basket, a little Yu Yu Hakusho or Bleach, but mostly One Piece. It's really quite-"
"One Piece? That suckfest? Pfft."
"Listen, if you've only watched the d-"
"Suuuuuuuuuuu…"
"-The dub, you've missed out on-"
"cckkkkksssssss. I'm going to go hang out with the cool anime geeks and watch Naruto."
":glare:"(semi-)True story. People judge it by the dub. Im not pointing out Naruto in particular, but many people are offended by the thought that some show about a hyperctive monkey and a swordsman named Zolo can dare compete with their favorite action-infused bloodfest. Plus the odd character designs can trun people off. Characters like Hachi and Wanze are kinda weird o.o

Hey, One Piece does have hot bishies >.>
1. SANJI
2. Shanks
3. Zorothen again, if your refering to the bisexual popular pretty boys, then yeah, it does lack in that department

No bishies in OP? falls over
There are Zoro and Sanji who are a 100 times better than regular bishounen… but that's my personal opinion about the issue.
Probably it's the american dub that made OP not that popular in the US curses 4Kids -
I had always pictured Goldenweek as OPs equivilent to "depressed" except shes lazy as hell.

The closest thing in One Piece to a bish is Bon Clay.

The thing is that it's keeping up with Naruto in ratings on Toonami, so it must be doing better than what you guys think.
Nothing is ever going to be like Pokemon when it was in it's prime anyways, so I don't see why you guys expect that.

It dosen't mean thier not good looking…
But they look like a real average non-model guy who would walk down the street.A Bishonen is the unrealistic solemn fem-man who inexplainably wears shirts with bare midriffs and has very ambigous interactions with other fem-men.
Aka, nothing like real men.So in essence, OP gives more realistic and healthy portrayals of guys, then the unnattainable 12 year old girls wet dream we far too often see.
Raise a cup to OP championing realistic but still pretty people!
Now the female characters breast size and waist lengths.....are another matter...<_<

And that's why I love them so much… I mean, it's not that super fantasy type of guy... and it's not that I don't like bishies (does Himura Kenshin count with those? :P) but OP has this something special that I don't see in other anime.
As for the girls aspect, I can't judge XD I'll leave that to the boys of course :P

I've been reading OP since '02 (IIRC that was when it was just barely starting to catch on here and more than ten people had actually heard of it) and the thing that turned people off it THEN was the art style. I mean, really; Oda has improved in leaps and bounds over the years (jee-zuhs, almost ten years on OP) but his beginning art isn't quite as appealing to your typical OMGANIME fan.
I butt heads with one of my best friends in the world over this very issue; he's a rabid fan of Naruto and I obviously of One Piece. One weekend we both decided we'd actually bother to read the series we both were criticizing so that we'd actually have validity in what we were arguing… both of us are pretty heavily trained in litcrit (though he's actually in college for it, heh)
His major issues were the tendency for the story to be formulaic and the characters that don't develop enough (keeping in mind that when he read OP and I read Naruto we were both trying to keep an open mind, but the very purpose of our debate was in order to pick out the flaws in each). Both I can agree with on some level; I mean, really, Straw Hats go to an island, stuff happens, Luffy beats up the bad guys, happy party, etc etc. And aside from the backstories, most characters don't develop as dramatically as many anime fans are used to seeing. (I'm not saying they DON'T, because they all DO, just... it ain't no Fruits Basket, is what I'm saying). There are by far and beyond notable exceptions, probably the most infamous being Usopp -- but most of his villains are completely lacking in serious development. Bonkurei you can argue for, maybe Spandam, but definitely not someone like Ener. I dunno. He's a huge Ruroken fan and while I definitely like that too, I mean, not every villain needs a tragic backstory ! :P
My points against Naruto were its absolute stagnation and the fact that so many of his characters just have no development at all (I haven't read any Naruto since after Madam Chiyo kicked the bucket, but I assume characters like Tenten and Hinata haven't exactly been in the spotlight). In Naruto you've got fighting for the sake thereof, in One Piece the fights are nearly almost always to progress the story. I mean, honestly -- what's the ratio of fights to chapters in Naruto ? =_= Too much fighting for the sake of making things look cool just drags things down for ages. Look at how much people were moaning about how long Sakura/M. Chiyo v. the-puppet-guy, for heaven's sake ! How far did that actually progress things ?
Buuuut I dunno. This is a debate that will never cease :P
-
I wonder if character development can go "overboard".
If every character in OP had a turnaround as vast as that seen in Usopp, it would be weird, at least.
The villians tend not to change for a few reasons:
-Shortness of exposure. We saw Kuro-Khaladore for three years via flashback and anecdote, and he did a WHOPPER of a change as part of his scheme. But does Don Krieg or Arlong or Smoker or even Buggy have a chance to reinvent himself in the time frame presented?
-Many of the villians were big fish in small bowls. On day one of One Piece, Ener was unquestionable and Arlong was the strongest man in the East Blue. They had no impetus to be welcoming change. It's not like Koby, who while aligned with evil at the beginning, really hates his lot and is seeking a way/reason to reinvent himself.
-
I think part of the problem is the first episodes. Heck, even the very first episode isn't good. When I lend people OP, I tend to say "Just give it some time, and you'll like it." It took one friend about 6 episodes (when Buggy turned up) and it took another about 25 episodes (but even then, she wasn't quite hooked. She stopped watching at that point because she was going overseas. Luckily they have OP in Germany too). My sister is up next for conversion laughs evilly
There are also anime snobs who hate the art style. I'd be happier if there were no asses like that in the fandom. =)
And also, I said this before, but I think the ninja story is more attractive to Western audiences than the pirate story. It's kinda like that "I love everything to do with Japan" thinking of some anime fans.
EDIT: I want to bash Naruto for a bit <3 Among other problems I have with Naruto, what really gets to me is the hero himself. He was a reject who decided to aim for the impossible (become Hokage). It's made out like Naruto's determination will help him reach Hokage, but the fact that his real source of power comes from a demon fox sealed in his body nullifies the "determination" bullshit. Why should people care about a hero who's got the advantage from page 1? Look at Rock Lee. He deserves to win more than Naruto, he has a handicap and his determination is stronger than anyone's.
Luffy seems to have a mystery background too, but I think it's more of an inherited love of adventure instead of a hidden superpower. His impossible goal is Pirate King, yet he's limited to his DF abilities and brute strength. His real unlimited power comes from his determination (to protect his friends, keep his promises etc.), and his creativity with his abilities. Not some hidden demon power that works as a deux ex machina. That's why Luffy is possibly the best Shounen hero ever.
(I also think "Gear 2" is fake and Luffy/Oda's way of saying "I don't give a rat's ass about power levels")
