I don't like the song "Piano Man" honestly, it's kind of a cheese grater.
But I like the album The Stranger amongst a couple other works of his.
The End.
Turnstiles is goddamn underrated. Miami 2017, New York State of Mind, James, Angry Young Man, SUMMER HIGHLAND FALLS

And Say Goodbye to Hollywood?? I was blasting that shit while I was driving my final great drive away from Savannah back up to da heartland.

NY Rappers love Billy Joel. You ask average too cool for school white kids about Billy and they gonna scoff and call him pussy shit.
But motherfucking Nas included him alongside Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen as big singers on Hero!!!
Nas knows what the fucks up.
I adore Pianoman, but my favorite will always be:

Yeah, you can't go wrong with me and Billy. Going to New York City this coming weekend, and I always have his music on my mind when I'm in NYC.
I have way too many songs I love him. I blame my love for his music on my family, whom love his stuff just as much.
Holy shit I just looked through my record collection and found Glass Houses.
I now know what I'm doing tomorrow.
Glass Houses owns hard.
It's Still Rock and Roll to Me is like the best song of all time.
I have two different vinyls of The Stranger for some reason. One of them is sepia toned black and white and the other is monochrome black and white. It's neat and a testament to the allure of vinyls and their cheap ass paper.
I have two copies of Glass Houses for some reason. They're both the same tone of color. Its' not very neat.
I grew up listening to Billy Joel; my parents were both huge fans, so this is a thread I can get behind.
The Stranger is probably my favorite album, but his entire run from Turnstiles through An Innocent Man is pretty much brilliant.
For sure one of the best pop songwriters ever.
And I've fucking seen him live.

You too Zephos. Best fucking Disney song (and movie) ever. Fact.
How come nobody has mentioned this?
Billy Joel is great. I like Elton John more, but its a narrow margin.
I can thank Conan O Brien of all people for introducing me to Billy Joel properly. He had a random skit (aren't they all?) where he had a cactus chef playing "We Didn't Start the Fire" on a violin (very random) and that got stuck in my head.
This was years and years ago, before internet downloading was the norm, so instead of just getting that lone song from somewhere, I had to go out and buy the cd to get the song, along with whatever other random tracks might be there, good or bad. I ended up getting the greatest hits 3-pack, and was just blown away to realize this guy had done so so much great stuff. Some of the songs I knew and just hadn't associated with him, and some I heard for the first time. But it was amazing through and through.
I'm actually pretty glad that didn't happen till I was… 16 maybe? If the songs had just been ingrained into my childhood I don't think I would have appreciated them as much.
"She's Got a Way" just gets me every time.
There was a period during my freshman year where We Didn't Start The Fire didn't stop playing in my head for an instant.
Currently playing Glass Houses on my turntable oh my God this is fucking great.

COOL FUNK
EVEN IF IT'S OLD JUNK

My lord is there anything this man has done that isn't totally kickass?!??
he's also the guy of Goodnight Saigon right?
Man. He is perfect.
Billy Joel…now that takes me back. Own "The Stranger" on CD, sort of inspired...well, my most used name on the web. And I actually won a karaoke contest in college with...well, I performed "It's Still Rock 'n Roll To Me"...with a puppet. And it was bizarre...but I won. Luckily no one videotaped me that night...or if someone did, it isn't on Youtube.
And there are certain songs by him I just can't turn off whenever they're on the radio: "Captain Jack", "The Saga of Billy the Kid", "Miami 2017", "Angry Young Man", "Vienna", "Tell Her About It" (what...that song is fun), "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant",
"Pressure" (one of the most epic music videos ever)...heck even some of his overplayed songs I can't turn away from.
But one song I think is vastly underrated by him? "Root Beer Rag". Look it up and listen, it is awesome.
Another underrated classic.

Best track off River of Dreams, bar none.
I really can't think of anything I don't like from Billy Joel, I can't say the same for Elton John.
This isn't really considered one of his classics but the music video really freaked me out as a kid

I have very fond memories of all the early 80s songs like "Uptown Girl", "Tell Her About it", and "The Longest Time".

Actually remember that song from "Movin' Out", surprised something that obscure made it in. (I never even heard it before seeing that show)
Storm Front is kind of a lousy album, but these two songs rule like hell.

That was awesome. I think the original Version is Better, but it was still awesome!
I do love me some Billy Joel though, My mom and I have a particular Soft spot for Piano Man. Mostly because of a particular line.
"And he's talkin' with Davy who's still in the Navy and probably will be for life"
My uncle David died in the Navy.
My favorite Billy Joel song is this

I also like Captain Jack, Piano Man, Goodnight Saigon, Tell Her About It, among others.
I really can't think of anything I don't like from Billy Joel, I can't say the same for Elton John.
Elton has a fair amount of misses, but to be fair, he's done about 500 songs, a LOT more songs than Billy. And he kept his output up at pretty much an album a year for the last 40 years. 30 albums and a couple soundtracks, to Billy's 13. They've both done about the same number of live albums and compilations.
Though maybe Elton should have skipped out on the 80's, much of his output then was pretty forgettable. (I'd still love to see one of the concerts where they perform together tho, that has to be amazing.)
For comparison, Beach Boys did 28 albums in about 25 years, Elvis did 23 albums in 23 years, Freddie Mercury's Queen did 14 in 22 years, and Meatloaf did 11 in 40 years, of which 4 were good.
Though the Beatles were the true monsters. They were only together for a single decade, and they made 27 albums. TWENTY SEVEN! In 10 years! (And 54 compilations since then…) And John Lennon still went on to make "Imagine" after that...
The Beatles made more like 12.5 albums, the rest were just American reissues with differences.
Hrm, taking an actual look at the albums instead of just the shorthand number wikipedia gives, I suppose thats true. I thought that number felt a little high.
Well, that considered, all the numbers I gave from above might be off by a smidge.
Still pretty impressive considering the innovation and quality they kept up for most of it. The Beatles have a couple misses, but those can easily be swept under the rug given everything else they did.
Tho Meatloaf still managed to suck an awful lot considering how few albums he did and how good he was at his best. (I suppose how good Jim Steinman was at his best, really…)
1. Please Please Me
2. With the Beatles
3. A Hard Day's Night
4. Beatles for Sale
5. Help!
6. Rubber Soul
7. Revolver
8. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
9. Magical Mystery Tour
10. The Beatles (White Album)
11. Abbey Road
12. Let It Be
(Plus the Yellow Submarine soundtrack's first half)
That's the official discography nowadays.
That's weird for me personally considering I've listened to Meet The Beatles! about a million times since casette tapes were the media of choice, but I won't argue the official list.
Also the 1 album, but thats pretty blatantly a best of compilation.
Speaking of the Beatles on a Billy Joel thread, how do yall feel about The Nylon Curtain outside the big singles?
Pretty strange set of songs.
the A-side is great, B-side not so much.
as far as his 80s stuff goes, Glass Houses is where it's at.
also, TELL ME some of you guys have heard his old two-man ORGAN AND DRUMS HARD ROCK BAND
