I'm rather speechless right now. All those lives lost and even more to be lost in near future. And even worse that every time I read a new update, it got worse. It's like the tsunami in Southeast Asia in 2004 over again.
9.0 earthquake hits Japan

@JERK:
Except that they did.
Hey I ain't trending it man. A lot were also comparing Katrina to today's activity, but still leaves a bad taste in the mouth from not only those few Americans who decided to spread that, but everyone who reposted it.
That's… scary and fascinating at the same time. 0.o
@Thousand:
Is it wrong if I find that kinda cool and awe-inspiring at some level?
How disturbingly perfect that slice is. :blink:
I've also seen a few people making new jokes based on the fact that it was Chuck Norris' Birthday when it struck.
I hope no one was driving there when that happened. I was always afraid of falling inbetween cracks like that when I was a kid. Often feared they were bottomless.
@No:
Okay, how the hell do you fix that ?
@Mr.333:
WOAH.
That's Just…I'm Speechless.
I don't think you can. I think the road just got permanently wider … O_o
I've also seen a few people making jokes based around the fact it was Chuck Norris' Birthday when it struck. :getlost:
-
They'll have to bridge it with steel beams and brace it with tar. They could also try to fill up the hole but considering that it will run 100 meters+ deep the first one is the most reasonable option.
Havoc, your well of info on these interesting things is awesome.
-
I've spent most of the last 15 hours trying to get in contact with friends and loved ones in Japan and Hawaii. The folks in Hawaii are all doing well, my mother said the waters receded far enough to fully expose the reefs and it did some frontal property damage, but no one was hurt. I've only been able to reach 6 of the people I know in Japan.. so I'm still incredibly on edge about it all. Hopefully, they're all ok and actually getting good sleep somewhere… and that daylight will bring about new news.
I'm still thanking God that it happened in the afternoon for them. I think the death toll would be much higher had it happened in the middle of the night. :<
-
@No:
But wont there be a huge possibility of the whole thing collapsing ?
It depends on the underground, as long as it's firm it won't collapse. It's basically a bridge that runs into the ground.
@Thousand:
Havoc, your well of info on these interesting things is awesome.
! Thank you. I would feel better though if I could put those information to use and help people with it, but it's very hard to get into the THW (German Federal Agency for Technical Relief) as a volunteer because they require you to have like 10 years of experience and I'm not even done studying. As if you need an university degree to carry rocks around. :getlost:
-
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but there's an English feed of the live stream.
He's actually answering questions too, 14+ hours and still broadcasting.
It's situations like this when I really would like to understand Japanese beyond some select terms.
-
I've also seen a few people making jokes based around the fact it was Chuck Norris' Birthday when it struck. :getlost:
My fucking god. It's bad enough that Chuck Norris jokes are insanely old now… :getlost:

The Earthquake shifted the Earth's axis by 10 Inches.
10 centimetres, or about 4 inches. Which will probably shorten the day by a microsecond or two.

Some of these pictures are quite harrowing. Looks like a Cake that's been sliced. So fragile.
Whoa, it's so clean and fluid. Hard to imagine that the hard earth ripples like water during quakes.
-
@Dan:
10 centimetres, or about 4 inches.
10 Inches, 25 Centimetres were my original figures.

@Dan:
10 centimetres, or about 4 inches. Which will probably shorten the day by a microsecond or two.
How did the 04 tsunami effect the length of the day again ?
-
@Dan:
Ah. Well all i've seen so far is 10cm.
I'm seeing a lot of your figures around so far too though. Could have been an error on my source.
-
I'm seeing some snows in some part of the videos. The timing of this perfect was really bad.
-
@No:
How did the 04 tsunami effect the length of the day again ?
About 1.26 microseconds, according to NASA.
-
As in shorten or lengthen ?
-
Gotta love our Orange County surfers, disasters all over the pacific and they're just MAD because they won't let them SURF, those bastards. Better safe than sorry, buddy
they should let them surf and maybe they'll drown and the world will be a better place
-
@No:
How did the 04 tsunami effect the length of the day again ?
It was 3 microseconds exactly. Just to put that into perspective: light travels 100 meters in that time, so I guess we won't miss much.
@Dan:
About 1.26 microseconds, according to NASA.
Oh, so they changed the figures? Do you happen to have a link, I'd like to read about it.
-
@No:

Shorten.

Actually, no. You made me double check my sources, and you're right. I had mixed up 2010 Chile with 2004. My mistake, guys.

There was actually a huge outrage because a lot of Americans tried and succeeded in getting 'HURRICANE KATRINA' trending on Twitter and it was all of the 'Japan didn't help US with Katrina' nature etc.
This is:
"Japan going be iight it ain't nuffing like haiti or katrina"
"This may hurt: when Katrina hit, where was the world when WE needed them? I'm done"
"Cause Alot Of Yall Bitches then Go Thru Shit so dont say Katrina dont Matter It do Matter I know some babies that loss their live so STFU"
why I fucking hate niggas.
Stupid as fuck.
This made me laugh though:
Idiots.
I've also seen a few people making jokes based around the fact it was Chuck Norris' Birthday when it struck. :getlost:
lol oh internet

Spare us any further of this idiocy, please :sad:
@Dan:
Shorten.
16 characters.
Damn you earthquakes, that's precious sleep time I'm losing cause of you.
-
@No:
As in shorten or lengthen ?
Does…it really matter with that short amount of time?
Edit: Ah. Sleeping time. Nvm. Every microsecond counts.
-
A matter of principle.
Would it even be possible to reach an oposite effect with similar means ?
-

That's an actual road? People were driving on it with their cars? And now it looks like it's made from plasticine… nature is strong... I remember I saw something like this in a cartoon movie, and I was whoa, it can happen?, but everybody said no, so I expected it to be impossible... but it isn't.
! It's… scary...

Any more updates on the death tolls? I can't watch tv right now due to children swarming it with poohbear :I
Also I wanna know how Okinawa's doing. I've got a family member there :<
-
It makes straight railways bend like soft spaghetti.

I'm listening to the English feed of the live stream. So far, about 1100 people dead/missing, 400 dead, 700 missing…
Poor katz, he's been going on for 14+ hours.
Edit: Should I feel guilty for thinking about how amazing mother nature is? The ripples look so elegant...
-

We could only be SO lucky.

Curse my cruel sense of humor.
I can't stop imagining a cartoony train following those tracks perfectly.
-
man… when I was little, and we had earthquake drills, we all had to get under our desks. And was all "that's pointless. The main danger of earthquakes is the ground opening up like in cartoons. we should be running around avoiding the cracks in the ground, not staying in one place."
of course, as I got older, I learned that the chief danger of earthquakes is things falling on you, or buildings collapsing with people inside, and that fissures rarely ever happen.and now I see some of these pictures... holy shit. I almost can't believe that they're real.
-
It seems like some of my family is alright. Haven't found anything about anyone else.
Heart still out for everyone involved.
-

My best friend is stationed there with the marines right now. He was supposed to be in Florida in 7 days. He talked to me after the earthquake, so he seems okay, but I hope he is still okay.
-
@Dan:
Actually, no. You made me double check my sources, and you're right. I had mixed up 2010 Chile with 2004. My mistake, guys.
Heh, I wasn't to sure about it either so don't worry about it. Who cares anyway we practically lose 7 microseconds every day and we never noticed a thing.
There isn't anything new about the nuclear power plant which I guess is a good sign that things are starting to get under control. I sure hope they have overcome the worst at last and people won't suffer from any more aftershocks.
-
I wonder what measures Japan is taking on foreign nationals. Majority of its citizens are aware of their disaster response protocols and procedures but foreign nationals tourists and workers alike who have just currently worked in the country would pretty much have a hard time responding to these incidents.
-
I've just seen something on the News.
They're expecting the aftershocks going on for another Month or so.
That's just horrible :sad: -
@Holy:
It seems like some of my family is alright. Haven't found anything about anyone else.
Heart still out for everyone involved.
Oh, good. I'm glad, Holy.
Hope the rest are okay.

Thanks so much! He said Okinawa's fine, that's a big relief for me :>

Those staying with nationals should be fine (as fine as anyone), and I'm sure hotels have all sorts of protocols for dealing with foreign guests during catastrophes. That's what I'm hoping at least…
@Holy:
It seems like some of my family is alright.
Thank god.
-
This is:
why I fucking hate niggas.Well my race is put back another 20 years with those comments. I'm really in awe over the images being shown so far. Really hoping the death toll stays low but my goodness this is insane.

Awesome! I'm glad to hear your family's safe.
Curse my cruel sense of humor.
I can't stop imagining a cartoony train following those tracks perfectly.
You're not alone. I think the same thing the first time when I see them. It'd definitely be something to tell your friends and family back trying to fix that.
-
Thanks so much! He said Okinawa's fine, that's a big relief for me :>
That's great, I'm happy your family's fine at least Mokenda. Especially since Okinawa is practically surrounded by the ocean I can understand why you were worried.
Edit: The same goes for you of course Holy it must be a great weight lifted from your chest.
-
I'm glad to hear you got news from them and they're safe Holy. Same goes for Mokenda_mint and everyone else of course!
-

Nice to hear man.

@CCC:

I hope so, I was just worried about foreign nationals working other jobs such as factory constructions and sewer clean ups, I know quite a few people who work in Japan but have so little knowledge on how to communicate in Japanese. Most of them are illiterate of Japanese language and characters.
Aren't you living in Japan C? or I must have you mixed up for someone else.
-
God damm, ugh this is terrible.
My heart is with all the places and people affected by this.
-
Aren't you living in Japan C? or I must have you mixed up for someone else.
Nah. The Japan-dwellers on AP are Greg and Steven D Teach (anyone else?).
I've got people I care about there, though.
-
So how are things going after the two new major earthquakes?
-
I had a sudden impulse to look up China's efforts to give relief to Japan. They did.
Anyway, I have to give praise for Japan's wonderful architecture. Wavy skyscrapers saved a lot of lives.
The water that washed over the cars and debris looked abominable. I mean it was jet black, and disgusting.
-
I see.
anyways since we mentioned the Greg and SDT let me just address this question.
and something not relevant to the topic. Greg got a jap GF :o ?
She is his wife.
-
I can't say anything that others haven't already, but I'll just put my backing behind those of you who have loved ones in Japan. I hope everything is okay…
To the rest of you who are in America and Canada, I'll reiterate: you can donate ten dollars from your mobile by texting REDCROSS to 90999.
Mod warning: To those of you who are making light of this (and, no, I don't mean those who are making fun of the surfers in California) and making 'witty' racist jokes, this is your warning. If I catch it again, you will be punished. There is no excuse.
