GAINAX's Panty & Stocking With Explosive Diarrhea
-
-
Rebuild of Evangelion?
Actually the animation companies Studio Khara and KlockWorx are making the movie series. Gainax is merely in a partnership with them.
-
Episode 9 was one of the best so far. The first half had some nice eye candy and great music, but what really did shine for me was the second half of the episode. The ghost and Stocking love and the sad twist at the end was really heartbreaking. If it's about emotions - this was the best one. Shows that this series is not only about jokes and sexy girls…

It was intriguing but when Stocking is fawning over a guy that is farting every other gag; it's difficult to take seriously. This isn't Saikano.
Also what's the twist about a ghost dying at the end of a Panty & Stocking episode?
-
The twist was that no one killed him. He killed himself in a way.
-
The OST of this show is going to be epic. I love the music of this show.
Also: new episode: 9
Wtf is up with this second part, I'm waiting for the twist…
Edit: So wow, Stocking was actually in love with that dude. Hmm... Don't know how I feel about that.
I hear that, can't wait for OST comes out and well the twist was they didn't have to kill this ghost with their weapons.
-
Well, yeah, obviously.
It's just like… there was absolutely no doubt in my mind for even a second that he would die. He's a ghost, it's Panty & Stocking: he's going to die.
It would be a twist if a ghost survived, imo. This wasn't so shocking.
-
Another sweet episode. The first part was what we have come to expect, but the second was pretty unique. You're deluding yourself, Silence, if you think it was just like every other episode.

Though my comment about him dying just the same may have implied that I do, I don't. It was just too silly to take seriously and talk about how life-changing and inspirational it was when it was just a slight change in tone.
I was underwhelmed, I guess.

A flatulent, dead-beat ghost proposed to a goth fallen angel with a ring made of poop. Yeah, I don't think anyone will claim that this episode was a pivotal moment in his life, but it was certainly a new take on the show. I think GAINAX toed the line between ludicrous and serious quite well, actually. But I can totally understand being underwhelmed if you expected a purely pensive romance or solely riotous humor.

I liked this episode a lot.

I expected neither, and was underwhelmed with whatever lies between.
But since I consider most episodes in this series, "just ok" rather than the biggest revolution in animation since the zoetrope, you ought to take it for what it is.
-
You guys are really putting the episode onto a pedestal. It was pretty stupid, but Stocking's fawning was really adorable and fun to watch. It was funny too, though not in a stand-out way like the first episode. Certainly worth watching but not a defining episode of the series so far.

Yeah, pretty much this. This is how I feel about the episode.
It was good but it ain't no Withering Heights.
-
I seriously don't see where anyone put it on a pedestal. I said it was "certainly a new take on the show" that was "another sweet episode." Sea simply said that he "liked it a lot." Aru said it was one of the best episodes. No one said anything about it transcending entertainment or defining the series.
-
I found this episode to be pretty good, the first half was funny and nice ecchi, and the 2nd one was a bit sad. This series is really turning out well in my opinion.
-
So we've got a preview of the soundtrack!

Only regret is that there isn't one for Technodildo.
-
I rolled my eyes at some of the song titles but it sounds very good so far. I'm looking forward to when it comes out.
-
Well 70% of episode 10 sucked but the end was epic the song really reminded me of dani California the way they were impersonating other bands.

Yeah after that tune at the end of this ep I'm really looking forward to the OST now.

Loved the episode. Have they said how many episodes the series will be? Really hoping this isn't the last one. Unfortunately had that sort of feeling though. Loved all the references throughout the episode. I think that was a Watchman Refrence wasnt it during the second part of the chuck series.
-
Have anyone here seen Dead Leaves? I was kinda reminded of PSG's fast paced animated style from watching it. I reccomend it to anyone who haven't seen it already.

Don't worrt there's 13 episodes. So only 3 episodes left.
-
I've always loved that song. Super surprised to see it get a music video.
'Twas awesome.
Edit: Though the rest of the episode was pretty dull outside of Garterbelt's antics.

Ah hate to say it but that's still too little in my eyes ;) Love this show. its just so random.

That's why I'm saying. Gainax should do more!
-
Apparently Chuck got his invincibility powers by the Dr. Manhattan method. I love such unexpected and random references.
Another enjoyable and completely unpredictable episode.
-
This is a 25 episode series, is it not?
And Zkaiser, your avatar is godly.
-
I think we have 3 episodes left.
-
Heard that it was actually a 26 episode series.
-
Aaanarchyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Everyone Wants To Be Me
Anarchyyyyyyyy Hey-yeah! -
Heard that it was actually a 26 episode series.
That was what I heard too, but I also heard 13. Then I realized that every episode is made up of two parts, so maybe each one counts as a single episode. That would make it 13 episodes long. Which is disappointing.
-
Loved that music video, with all the parodies. That was an entertaining series… shame it's gonna end soon.
This may be looking too much into it, but anyone notice that in the Abbey Road Parody, Stocking (as Paul McCartney), is holding a Lollipop instead of a cigarette? Remind you of any bad edit of our favorite series?
-

When they say "26" they're referring to the individual segments as episodes.
So i guess the one that introed the Demon sisters counts as one, but this one counted as 3 (the Inner Breif, Chuck to the Future and Anarchy vid) meaning we have 3 half hours left, but it still rounds out to 26 if they stick to 2 eps a half hour.
-
The soundtrack has a track called "Corset's Theme", so it seems like we're getting a character called Corset. Sweet.
-
Nope. You already heard that theme in the episode 6 when the demon sisters and angel sisters are fighting.
-
Just saw the episode, the music one was great,I didn't like the Brief or Chuck parts.
-

I assume that Corset is the Mayor.
-
-
Makes sense. I can see that happening.

Well watched this series for the first time and caught up with all the episodes. I won't lie–sometimes it was a chore to get myself to watch another. It's a very hit or miss show.
I don't watch that much new anime, but the humor is VERY random and juvenile/raunchy a lot of the time. Though that doesn't mean it doesn't try to be clever which it is enough to get me watching more episodes.
A real plot definitely does not suit this show. There is some flimsy cobweb of a plot about angels earning their way to heaven and fighting ghosts/devil sisters. But, really, the show is such a farce, spending so much time mocking itself, that any real attempt at serious sentimentality is destined to come across as phony. Episodes like that bizarre vomit ghost one or that "Stocking loves a ghost" which would otherwise seem like serious stories in another serious are really just parodies of sentimental genres they are trying to emulate.
I'm sure this is normal for this series, but the characters themselves only really succeed as clever gag vehicles, since they are otherwise cardboard cut-out edgy personalities done hundreds of times before--it's the animation, voice-acting, and joke-writing that sets them apart. One the devil sisters are introduced, its pretty hard to care who beats who in the whole charade (though the established heroines naturally get the edge).
Few more things:
-Animation is surprisingly erratic. It goes from fluid to static, to detailed to cheap flash animation fairly randomly. The budget is definitely there (the latest one had a very nice music video sequence), and it can look great, but I can't say it's consistently good.
-The show revels in pop culture parodies, references, and jokes. It's heavily frontloaded with American references, mostly at random, but it can lead to interesting parodies. Though some references, such as Ren and Stimpy-esque characters are just thrown in and created at a whim, like there was no real thought put into it.
-The show can seem desperate to be edgy at times. As an English speaker, the "Engrishy" swearing that is thrown around comes across as sad and needy, an "edge" that is just lost on me. The show also banks heavily on sex and nudity involving the heroines (and the now-stereotyped pedophilia of the priest[?] Garterbelt). While it's intentionally exploitative and even cleverly exploitative, it's still exploitative, which tends to be a bit much for my tastes.
Alright, time to hit the brakes on this post. To summarize, I do like this show, in part, because of its signature style and it can generate laughs. I just wouldn't call myself a huge fan. I'd guess it depends on how fresh audiences find the material and their tolerance for random humor and situations.
-
The Chuck parts of episode 10 were kinda … senseless ... or did I miss something?
-
Caught up to Up 7. Man this was fun. Episode 6 had some crazy ass moments. My favorite part had to be the car battle. Not as good as the stuff seen in Dead Leaves, but awesome nonetheless.
Ep 5 short 2 was really weird… Weird. I loved the depressing style, but the universe didn't seem to fit. Decent parody though. It would have been more awkward if it was mixed in with live-action.
It's also surprising to me that the same director of Dead Leaves is directing this series, though he does not seem to do much key animation. The Dead Leaves -like style was seen in EP1 and EP6, but not much outside that. I hoping the final ep blows epic chunks(vomit=awesome in this top).
Edit: Caught up the ep 10. Chuck to the Future part 2 was just amazing. The music vid was kinda boring. I'm not a fan of auto-tune, but maybe that's the joke. The parodies were really cool though.
-
The first part of episode 11 was amazing. Young Garterbelt is the coolest man in existence. Garterbelt is an immortal prophet? Interesting..
-
I loved the first part of episode 11 and Garterbelt's origins are really interesting. Too bad I didn't like the second part as much, even though it was still pretty entertaining.
Also, I adored the music video in episode 10. That song is really addicting. -
Briefs about to become Garterbelt's successor. He's going inmortal…
-
Anyone notice the picture on Garterbelt's desk before he gets shot up? It looks suspiciously like the Mayor of Daten City's silhouette… I wonder if this will be addressed in the last two episodes.
-
Man, that Garterbelt episode was really awesome. I liked the second one too, but that montage of different time periods and art styles was superb; the image of his afro swaying in the wind of a battlefield was iconic.
-
Garterbelt's past was awesome!
The food one was a little boring,it had a few good parts though.
