@Silence:
Ok, I'm curious about it, but is it REALLY worth watching? I hate bland fantasy series: they are my bane. If this isn't Escaflowne or Lodoss War or Scrapped Princess or Guin Saga I'm taking my ball and going home.
And if this is Tower of Druaga I'm going to find you and kill you.
@Silence:
…Ok, maybe those standards are a little high.
But are there characters with depth? How many anime stereotypes will I have to endure? Is the main character a scrappy young lad preaching about justice and right and wrong? Worse, is he a pacifist?
Tell me, because I want to learn.
Okay, I understand what you are saying, so I'll attempt to help you out. (I have not seen any of the titles you mentioned, btw.)
The only one talking about "righteousness" is the King, Sion. But the series explores how foolish his dream to have an ideal nation without war really is, because it's impossible.
The main character, Ryner, is the complete total opposite of what you described. And that's why I think he stands out compared to other "heroes". He's a guy who has been shit on his whole life, and he just is fed up with it all. He has no goals, no motivations. His only desire is to take naps all day, but he is forced to find the relics in exchange for his life, as he was about to be executed and was saved by Sion.
Ferris, the girl that accompanies him, also could care less about any of it. Her only goal is dango (a type of Japanese food?). The king threatened to crush every dango shop in the kingdom if she didn't go along with the hunt, so she is also forced.
There are quite a few side characters though, some of which are pretty cliche (girl with a crush on Ryner who follows him, for example. And typical bratty little sister.) But since these characters are only shown here and there, it's up to you whether it really adds, adds nothing or detracts from the story.
One other character worth mentioning is the guy (whose name always slips me) who acts like he's following the king's orders but has a secret agenda. He controls dark magic and even kills his own father and his entire kingdom.
Anyway, as I said, just give the first few episodes a try. I'm going to say the first 3-4 do a good job setting up the characters and what this story has to offer. You should get an idea if you like it or not after that.
