They're going that fast because they're behind - they're going to have to slow down soon too.

Pretty obvious. Was just saying wishful thinking.

you are fucking kidding me
where the hell did that come from?

You have seen that I have been at this forum for at least a year now and should be able to understand the formula, so it is pretty damn obvious why we are going so slow on releases.
You have been in this forum for at least a year now, and should be able to expect the sudden surge of idiots that would cry, bitch and moan about "slow releases" while forgetting/ignoring the detail I stated above.

So basically you're insulting someone for no reason at all? Moving on…
Watching it right now. Did Gedatsu really die?!?
nope, he's got a cover story too
Season 3, Part 4 will be Episodes 183 - 195. And the commentary is on Episode 193.
http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/BpGsAwU0yQpZLnSqN4/browse/item/89569/4/0/0
If 207 starts Season 4 then Season 3 Part 5 will only be 11 eps, not that I'll be complaining as long as G8 and Foxy each get their own sets.
It's not outside the realm of possibility; Eden of the East only has 11 episodes, and that set costs $60 (MSRP). Granted, it had a few more extras than normal to make up for it, plus the Oasis song, but if that set could be justified, so could an 11-ep One Piece set.
Certainly an interesting choice on your part, FUNi. I hope they're ready for what it might mean.
Not that I won't pick up 3.5, of course. I might as well own the entire anime series.
@Badass:
Take the hint.
Whats that supposed to mean?
in my terms, it's:
shut up

Yea, cause ending a set an episode before the end of an arc which they said they would never do makes sense.
I prefer this way.
Maybe they'll get in touch with Toei and see about getting some extras that we've never had before. Maybe they'll fill the extra episode or two's worth of space on the next set with such a thing…
You know, I really don't care as long as G8 ends up on Season 3. Although I really DO hope they add a couple of extras in it.

That would be cool if they put maybe the first 2 tv specials on that set to balance it out.
those being, Adventure in the Ocean's Navel and Open Upon the Great Sea! A Father's Huge, HUGE Dream!.
Though I seriously doubt it, it's just wish full thinking that they should.
Adding TV Specials would be nice, no doubt there.

oh wow. should have known. That would been a stupid way to die.

That WOULD be nice, but it's also extra work…that would be my preference, though, I was hoping they'd do them when they first picked up the series

Tv specials would be great but adding them a set full of filler would do absolute jack in terms of sells for them. I am thinking maybe when they get around to the movies they could release the tv specials as extras to those.

Asking someone to be a little nicer on the internet is like trying to paint the sky red, it can't be done.
People are assholes- what else is new? not attacking anyone, just making a point

*sigh….i can dream can't I?
I've been a little behind, I still need to get Season 3 Third Voyage. The TV specials would be great to compensate if we're shorted episodes.
I've also been thinking that even though the DVD commentaries have been great on the past DVD sets, I still wish there were more special features on the sets like behind the scenes and cast interview videos. It would be awesome if they started adding things like that, but I have a feeling Funi is or will be too preoccupied with recording the show itself. Would anyone else like to see more special features or am I alone on this?
All i want are textless openings with the original logo.

Allow me to rephrase that in a nicer tone:
People are nice in person, but when they get onto the web where they can remain anonymous, all hell breaks lose… so while 25% are assholes, the other 75% are closet assholes.

that's actually a really fair assumption. well put.

I just call it as I see it, lol. And of course, I'm no exception to that rule. I've had my moments of online assery.

I'm actually hoping we get some stuff like this for Season 3 5th voyage. I hope they release it with only 11 episodes, but include at least 1/2 an hours worth of special features.
Maybe a Making of Featurette? Q&A with the Main Cast?
These kinds of things wouldn't take long to produce, and would be REALLY nice little inside looks at the series.

I hate to be a douche bag but…

We kinda already have a "Making Of" and "Q&A". I agree on wanting more special features, but I'd rather have the actual Japanese dvd art on the slim dvd covers and have better packaging than these thin packs FUNi is using that makes our sets look terrible after a week of having them(a day in some cases)!
I was pleasantly surprised that Sonny Straight's commentary on the Season 3 Third Voyage DVD didn't include the 'throwing down the gauntlet' story this time like all his other commentary appearances.
You all know what I'm talking about.

Yeah….How can I not? Well, they say competition promotes quality, so if listening to the japanese va makes him want to do better, I can only see it as a positive thing.
So I just returned from Anime Nebraskon, where Eric Vale and Jerry Jewell were some of the guests at. My friend and I had a chance to talk with Jerry after his panel about Brook. Jerry said he had already seen episodes with Brook in it, and hadn't considered voicing the character before. After he thought for a good minute, he said "Aside from being a skeleton Brook is just like me! He loves music, likes to make lame jokes, and is quite the lady killer." We even got him to try doing some Yohohos for us and he hummed Bink's Sake. He didn't give us any kind of official statement, but we're fairly sure he's highly interested in playing Brook now (he seemed to really get into the idea, and stayed in that good mood even after talking to us).
I think he also said, like Eric, he's had to watch all of One Piece for some reason. He said Jungle P was his favorite opening. Sadly I did not get a chance to ask Eric any more Sanji related questions, but I didn't really have any so I guess it's no big deal :P
I am actually nicer online then in person.
Anyways, I REALLY could use some help with this.
I am looking into buying the First Voyage on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/One-Piece-Season-First-Voyage/dp/B00143XE64/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1289226814&sr=8-5
Does Funimation still have issues with subs?
Will the Funimation disc support this surround sound unit?
Does Funimation DVDs offer the best quality? I know there are no Blurays for One Piece. Will the HD videos on Youtube be higher quality than the DVDs?
If you can answer any of these questions I would be really grateful.

One Piece went HD with episode 207. Since Funimation has only released up to about 180 so far, we don't know whether or not they will be releasing Blu-Rays, but for all the episodes Funimation have released so far, the DVD quality is the best. I only watch the dub on Funimation's DVDs so can't help you with the other question, sorry.
Thank you very much. The Davy Back fight is when everything went 16.9 and all that jazz.
So I am guessing the best quality will be DVD until the DBF arc.
-The best quality is the japanese dvd's (no compression), but they're a lot more expensive,(and obviously have no sub/dub). Also, this is only until 207, after that japanese hdtv raws are the best, though no one started capturing these until quite a while later.
-Funimation have first rate subs on the dvd's - it's only the streamed episodes that are shabby
-DBF may or may not be widescreen. There are widescreen masters available from 207, but the japanese dvd's didn't use widescreen until 229, so funi may not get the choice.
Obtaining a raw DVD would be out of the question. I would only understand the words,
"Baka, Gomu Gomu, Mugiwara, Yosh, Ossan, Aniki." What do you mean by no compression though? Is Japan using a dual layer format and the US isn't? Is a Japanese version just a higher KBPS or a higher res?
Basically funi has like 5-7 episodes per disc. So it's likely they're using some kind of compression, whereas the japanese ones will not be. Whether that difference would even be visible to the naked eye is another matter, since I don't have the (ridiculously expensive) toei dvds to make the comparison with.
I didn't notice any difference really. I'll make screencaps later if you want. I got some of the Japanese DVDs for cheap at book-off back when 4kids was dubbing.
Most KBPS quality drops off at fast motion scenes. If you watch a low quality version of riding the knock up stream you will have a hard time seeing what is going on.
I have a 32" Vizio 720P LCD, so I don't need anything crazy good quality.
I think I solved the question about the Surround sound though.
My system supports DTS and Dolby Digital (Dolby Digital is 5.1) and Barnes and Noble listed OP has having Dolby Digital Surround sound. It said 5.1 on the newer releases, but not on the earlier ones. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I have watched my DVDs on a 41 inch Flatscreen HDTV with a 5.1 surround sound system, and it looks and sounds amazing.
As Darkstorm said, the Japanese DVDs only have 2-5 Episodes per disc (and you only get 5 VERY rarely) whereas FUNimation's DVDs usually have about 6-7 Per Disc, so there has to be some compression on FUNimation's discs in comparison to the Toei discs because they are fitting more episodes onto one Disc.
However, with modern compression technology, there is most likely no appreciable difference between the two. Basically, any differences would be the kind you would never be able to catch by the naked eye unless you were comparing the two side by side.
For a good baseline of what we're talking about, check out Daizenshuu EX's comparison of the Japanese Dragon Ball Z "Dragon Box" and FUNimation's US Release. As roughly the same issues present themselves there. (Both are Toei series, both are released by FUNi in Eng, Both have More episodes per-disc in the US edition, US version getting Subs and a Dub, Compression changes, etc)
As for the Audio, the Sets feature a beautiful 2.0 Stereo Japanese Track that will sound even more crystal clear than any Fansub you've ever seen, as well as both a 2.0 Stereo English dub track and a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound Track. As well as a Dub staff and Cast commentary on one select episode. EVERY single volume includes these same features, including the 5.1 surround track. I read those features off the back of my Season One First Voyage (the first volume of the series) and I can assure you those features do carry over to every volume released.
The Subtitles are also top-notch, pretty much the best translated the series will ever be. There were some fans noting some spelling and grammar mistakes in FUNimation's subtitles, but Those only exist on the Simulcast subtitles on FUNimation's website of The Sabaody Arc and on.
The only extremely minor problem with the FUNimation DVD dub and subtitles, is a problem caused by Toei Animation.
When Toei gave FUNimation the series, they gave them a LARGE Bit of paperwork detailing several bits of terminology that Toei felt should be used. Most of these were carry-overs from the Viz Manga actually.
FUNimation was able to petition to get several of the terms changed back, and they succeeded with 95% of them, ALL of the important terms were fixed. Zoro is ZORO, Luffy's attacks are all gun-themed as they should be (Pistol, Gatling, Bazooka, etc) Chopper's forms are called "Point" not "Boost", etc. The only few minor changes are on attacks that you literally only see once. Like Kuro's attacks were kept as what they were called in the Viz Manga, and Arlong's "Shark-On-Darts" is just called "Shark Darts". Etc
But still, it's nowhere near as bad as What some fansubs do (Like Translating Luffy's "Gomu Gomu no Kane (Bell)" as "Gomu Gomu no Iron Headbutt")
As for the 16:9 episodes, they started airing in 16:9 on Japanese TV starting with episode 207. It's unconfirmed as to whether or not the HD Broadcast truly started at 207, because Raw rips didn't start being HD until 261. Japanese rules caused everyone to switch over to widescreen in anticipation of Going HD, so a lot of TV releases went "EDTV" (420p 16:9 instead of 480i 4:3) so its possible One Piece was only broadcast in EDTV from 207 to a certain point like 261. However, appearances of Flashback clips to those episodes in newer episodes shows that they apparently were PRODUCED in HD, so HD masters do in fact exist for them.
As for before episode 207, the series was broadcast in Standard Definition (480i) 4:3 for those episodes. Truly "HD" Masters do not exist for those episodes, so any Blu-rays you see in the future would most likely be Upscales, which is the exact same as putting your DVDs into a DVD player with an "Upscale" feature (PS3s have this)
Also as said before, despite being produced in 16:9 at 207, the Japanese DVD release did not start releasing in 16:9 until episode 229.
Toei notoriously hate reverse-importation of their products, so they may only provide FUNimation the same DVD masters they used.
FUNimation has stated that they will release One Piece in whatever format they are given it. If the masters Toei provide are 4:3, we will get 4:3, if the masters are 16:9, they will be 16:9.
I doubt very greatly that we will be getting any 4:3 episodes beyond 229, as the simulcast makes it obvious that Toei are providing 16:9 Masters to FUNi for later episodes. It's only 207-228 that we have to worry about, but we're getting dangerously close to those episodes, so we will know for sure soonish.
I tried to answer ALL of your questions, so please tell me if I missed anything.
Thank you very much, Demon.
I REALLY appreciate it.
I will be getting some Funi DVDs real soon.
I am not much into Dragon Ball but I found that very interesting.
I would have never thought that there would have been a difference between
the releases. I think you answered all of my questions.
My biggest worry was it not supporting 5.1, but you answered that question.
Really appreciate your in depth post.
