Rocky I: Great film, though Taxi Driver should have had it's Oscar.
Rocky II: Dull version of Rocky I
Rocky III: Dull version of Rocky IV
Rocky IV: An incredibly stupid movie, and an incredibly fun movie.
Rocky V: Poop.
Rocky VI: A shockingly good movie. Second best in the series when it comes to quality.
Well, I think JD just said all that needs be said.
I've only ever seen the first Rocky movie.
I have much catching up to do.
Nah, first Rocky is all you really need, though some channels tend to marathon basically all the films every couple of weekends. They're worth watching if they happen to be on.
It surprised me when I got the dvd not all that long ago and listened to the commentary, and discovered a couple of my favorite moments in the first movie that totally pinned him as an underdog were a result of budget.
The ice skating ring scene was originally supposed to be during the day with hundreds of extras… but its a much more persevering, personal character defining moment for them to be alone... and Rocky having to bribe a guy 10 bucks to have a mesely ten minutes. Said a lot about Rocky and the effor the was putting forth to impress Adrian and it gave them a private moment. And that Rocky himself wasn't actually skating and the guy in the back was counting down their remaining time the whole time?
And the scene before the big match where he looks at his poster and notes "The trunks are the wrong color" "It doesn't really matter does it?" I always thought that was a great little touch and great bit of writing to plan that out... nope, turns out the prop department screwed up and Stallone made a moment out of it on the day.
(His robe being too big was also such a moment, but that never really struck me the way the other two did.)
Just goes to show limits breed creativity.
Also turns out drinking 5 eggs in the morning is something Stallone actually did all the time and its really unhealthy. Ick.
I approve of this thread.
I love Rocky (first being my favorite - only seen I through IV) but yeah… the general pattern of each movie is pretty much the same. Even so I enjoy them. Great soundtracks, espeically enjoy IV's.
The robots in IV was... weird. Oh Eighties.
Robby - thanks for sharing the commentaries those are pretty funny. I always thought it was part of the script too.

I figured as much. I'm guessing it's just more of the same except blander and with giant robots, Russians on steroids, and Mr. T.
Rocky IV is a total melodramatic comic book of a movie, it's incredibly fucking fun, a total guilty pleasure and if you let yourself shut off a bit you actually can really get into the bumbling turned to 11 emotions of the thing. GREAT popcorn movie.
You gotta see it. It's essential.
Except for that fucking robot..
Rocky VI is actually really good too. Or Rocky Balboa as it got called.
I've never cared for II, which seems like a retread of I's charm without any of the same underdog momentum.
And III is just like IV except in denial, still half pretending it's a noble boxing movie, and not having the balls IV had and just going all out cheese spectacular about it's plot.
V is poop.
Wow, I pretty much agree with everything you've said. Except I thought V was hilarious and the last movie was pretty good but not really good in any way.
And I turn off III after Mr. T beats his ass. Clubber was the best.
I - Incredible. Definitely the best of it's kind
II - Definitely better than most give it credit for. Really does feel like the second half of the original
III - Stupid but still pretty good. Likeable characters all around and more Apollo
IV - Really doesnt deserve as much praise as it gets. Turned Rocky into an action movie. Doesnt work. Drago is pretty lame
V - Better than IV but still pretty bad
VI - Quite possibly the best in the series and a fitting end
Rocky IV had one great thing: Vince DiCola music score.
Mickey was a fucking great character.

I use to love my Rocky collection.
Now if I want to get inspired, I just YouTube the montages….
Poor Rocky IV
Haha Strings where did you get that avatar?

Love Rocky, only seen the first one though.
I always work out after I watch it :p
Stallone spent quarantine creating a Director's Cut for Rocky IV that is about 40 minutes longer than the original film. The trailer has me insanely pumped, even if I'm say to say goodbye to Paulie's sexbot. I'm also wondering if the good editing and music will be kept…
