What the fuck are you on about you mong
almost all of King's work is meaningless bathroom fiction
fuck that shitAnd we still don't know the full details of Togashi's condition. Even if it is laziness, he might get severe patches of writer's block, and that's pretty acceptable. Look at Ellison and Fukumoto, two of the greatest story/manga writers of all time, but they'd each had massive periods of writer's block.
And who fucking gives a shit if he's lazy. Half of the manga that are trying to MAKE IT BIG nowadays are shit like To-Love-Ru or Psyren anyway, so it's not like we're missing out on anything really good. Togashi can write a damn good story; no reason to boot him out of the listing just because he's lazy. I prefer it if he writes 20 chapters a year than him spitting out some stream of consciousness garbage like Kubo.
And yeah, I think Togashi's much better than Oda plotwise. Despite Oda's brilliant consistency in writing a decent story and excellent art, Togashi's characterization and themes blow OP's out of the water. OP is just too fucking linear for me. I like it, but some of the character relationships and arcs are just so painfully cringeworthy and unrealistic. Togashi, despite his fairly simplistic story arc here (BREAK INTO THE PALACE, KILL THE KING, OTHER COMPLICATIONS ENSUE), has made a pretty complicated and deep world here.

One Piece is for 15 years old kids. HunterXHunter aim to older readers.

@Don:
Oda and Kaitani interview and i haven`t heard so far of it..
Shame on me:ninja:Most of us didn't, because it was Kaitani and Oda
-
So you think Togashi has writers block every ten chapters in the same exact battle?
lmao
As for Hunter's "themes" most of them are pure guesswork by readers at this point.
Getting your panties in a twist about unrealistic plots in OP is pretty dumb too. -
do you have any explanation? laziness, divorce, back problems, cancer… there's about a hundred and five explanations for the hiatuses right now. I don't recall any of them being confirmed.
Suppose it doesn't even have to be writer's blocks. perhaps he just likes to take his stories slow, fleshing them out as much as possible (or laziness, but then again no one fucking knows)
there's a couple generic and obvious themes which have been explored pretty damn well so far, and I'm sure this arc will bring whatever theme he's trying to show with the King full circle fairly well
and spazzing out about details (seriously? details? depth? what the fuck) of all things is retarded as shit. the narration has hardly been "pointless;" I'm not reading this series just for NO NARRATION JUST DBZ BATTLE SCENES. the narration gives more insight as to what Togashi was thinking as he wrote that section of the story. I'd rather have a narrator covering the psychological aspects of the story than just blank spaces like with Kubo doesand I'm not even expecting One Piece to realistic; it's a children's manga. Of course there's going to be some stretches (with the insanely close friendships, etc.). I can just appreciate HXH a lot more because some of the characters actually have strongly considered abandoning their friends in their time of need. it's a lot more realistic than everyone just running in without the slightest care for their own safety.

I hope those impressions of
Togashi's characterization and themes blow OP's out of the water. OP is just too fucking linear for me. aren`t based on the fact that we get much more inner monologue of the charas in HxH.
I rly love those inner monologues, because it gives the charas(and so the story) such a great depth which i sometimes wish would be in OP.
But Oda said it a thousand times already that his manga is for a younger audience(even when i believe it gets more dark themes after the timeskip)and i don`t want to miss the slapstick-character of the story Oda always tries to create. We know that the main chara(Luffy) was never seen thinking about something.
His actions are based of emotions and so is the whole concept of OP.
It`s more an adventure-ride with many many highlights but rarely many situations you have to think a lot(even when it has sad moments and stuff like Goa Kingdom, slavery etc.).HxH has less humour, but you just get more into the charas(because you are literally following their thinking process) and is a great story, which sure is better in many moments than OP.
But i never had a hard time to identify or understand the behaviour of OP charas, even when many act..ehhm not rly human like.
It`s more based on the funny chara faults they have instead of deep emotions. -
God, you still have that avatar
I briefly had Japanese porn stars (I mean cosplayers) and then I had a man who jumped on the New York subway train tracks while the train approached and ran over him missing his brain by centimeters to save a guy who fell off the platform from a seizure but I always come back to this.
In the context of "popularity rankings," I was talking with a friend and he pointed out that a bunch of manga magazines have NO popularity rankings whatsoever, and that Weekly Jump is the only magazine with some a strict one.
Please remember I was paraphrasing. Here is the exact quote:
甲斐谷「漫画家の良いところってランクがない点だと思う。
もちろん人気のあるなしはあるけど、プロになったら
皆それぞれの作品を作って、実力に応じて頑張ってると思う」尾田「そこは僕、逆なんです。僕はランク付けの肩書きが欲しいんですよ。
こんなに頑張っているのに、なんで他の人と同じ『漫画家』って肩書きなんだろうって。」Kaitani- The good thing about 'mangaka' is that there's no rank amongst us. Of course there are popular and not-so-popular ones but when you become a professional, we all do our best with our abilities in our individual works.
Oda- In that case actually I'm the complete opposite. I want a degree of rank amongst us. I'm working this hard so I really wonder why some other people can hold the same title of 'mangaka'.
And also, it's not like HXH is unpopular.
HxH is fucking crazy popular. There are people who buy JUMP only for HxH. And basically if people are willing to put up with Togashi's shit (see his references to DQ in the weekly author's comments and how many hours he spent on the first dungeon of DQ9 earlier in the thread) then it's GOTTA be good. IF Oda is talking about Togashi, I think it has entirely to do with work ethic.
But like you said, it's simply NOT like Oda to come out against someone THAT strong from the same magazine. However, he has been extremely defensive in the past of friends regardless of what it meant for his popularity. See how he lead the charge defending Shimabukuro. After he started defending him, suddenly everyone else followed suit. That's something that consistently pisses off the adult manga-reading public but he does it anyway.
(especially since, from my understanding, the politics at Jump are really sensitive and he could get a lot of hell from the editors for saying something like that)
This is the big thing. Which is why it's (obviously) ambiguous. Point is, he's talking about someone or some people. At this point Oda is the antithesis of Togashi and his work ethic so on this end, those who read the interview instantly thought, "TOGASHI!". And even if he wasn't talking about Togashi, even as a completely ambiguous statement, just the very idea that he would intimate that he's 'different' from others for working 'hard' blew the fucking LID off his critics. It's a very sensitive statement.
The question is, coming from the author of the highest and fastest-selling manga of all time, is it okay for him to say that now?
Five or even two years ago I don't think so. But now? He might still be a whippersnapper but I think he's earned the ability to.
-
do you have any explanation?
Oh, well then I'll guess I'll accept you're stupid suggestion then.
Wait no, that would be retarded.Him being lazy is far more sensible then having writers block constantly for near years over the same exact battle.
No matter your aggrandization of it, Hunter is barely above OP in story complexity. None of the elements Togashi is playing with would warrant nine months of constant brainstorming. It's a laughable idea.
Suppose it doesn't even have to be writer's blocks. perhaps he just likes to take his stories slow, fleshing them out as much as possible (or laziness, but then again no one fucking knows)
If his idea of flow is over the top OCD analysis of what an anthropomorphic octopus is thinking trying to trap a walking lobster in an elevator then he is a shitty writer.
there's a couple generic and obvious themes which have been explored pretty damn well so far, and I'm sure this arc will bring whatever theme he's trying to show with the King full circle fairly well
and spazzing out about details (seriously? details? depth? what the fuck) of all things is retarded as shit. the narration has hardly been "pointless;"That's what you thought, but then I entered the room and stood exactly five decameters away from the door, which you realized changed the whole debate giving you exactly eight seconds to think of a new plan within the larger minute allowed by the impending magic boom boom powers of a mod, this changed your thoughts dramatically and altered your composure to a nervous one, causing you to exert sweat, which having noticed, caused me to smile. This smile meant that I understood your sudden issues, and in this understanding I realized I had four seconds to turn around and walk back two steps, twirl twice, recite the Magna Carta by heart, then pull back on the strings I attached to the door to avoid your counterattack. And then we both died because poison gas had been seeping in the room for the last five minutes prior to these realizations.
I'm not reading this series just for NO NARRATION JUST DBZ BATTLE SCENES. the narration gives more insight as to what Togashi was thinking as he wrote that section of the story.
It's overdone and would be completely terrible and stupid if it weren't fascinatingly insane. It's kind of like Outsider art at this point.
I'd rather have a narrator covering the psychological aspects of the story than just blank spaces like with Kubo does
HYUCK HYUCK ID RATHER HAVE STALIN SENDING PEASANTS TO GULAGS THEN HITLER KILLING THEM
and I'm not even expecting One Piece to realistic; it's a children's manga. Of course there's going to be some stretches (with the insanely close friendships, etc.).
THAT's what you find unrealistic??
What are you, a hikkomori?I can just appreciate HXH a lot more because some of the characters actually have strongly considered abandoning their friends in their time of need.
So…...Killua once or twice and that was because his brother put a goofy magic needle in his head that we only learned about right after Killua found about it 21 volumes into the story.
Usopp abandoning the crew over Merry is ten times that.
it's a lot more realistic than everyone just running in without the slightest care for their own safety.
This is pretty much the dumbest fucking thing to get upset over. Not even Berserk has this "realism".
-
Seriously, 3/4 of the stupid narration during the palace assault comes down to Togashi not trusting us or himself to be able to show actions and emotions without literally explaining them in asinine detail.
There is no way around this. It's a comic book, not a novel.
Show don't tell.
-
I stopped reading this series several years ago. Sometime after reaching the part where Gon's dad was introduced in that rather memorable scene. I stopped because I simply lost interest after that. Now though, I have seen it rated quite highly in the tiers thread and I was wondering if it was worth picking up again, or if the series has "improved". What think you, APers?
-
So you stopped before Yorkshin if i'm correct.
You must continue reading, it gets a lot better.
-
Thanks for clearing up a thing or two (like clarifying that interview bit), Greg. How's the misses?@Greg:
And even if he wasn't talking about Togashi, even as a completely ambiguous statement, just the very idea that he would intimate that he's 'different' from others for working 'hard' blew the fucking LID off his critics. It's a very sensitive statement.

Five or even two years ago I don't think so. But now? He might still be a whippersnapper but I think he's earned the ability to.
Yeah, regardless of who it might be referring to, the fact that Oda claims that he's on a different level is a huge statement in and of itself, and probably what people should be paying attention to instead of trying to guess "who"
Togashi's "schedule" is definitely frustrating, but I still think it's a good series. I just hope he's able to move on soon. I'd say "return to a weekly schedule" but I'm not sure if that's in the cards
-
Tomorrow I ll catch up with this thing, I hope he doesnt disapoint me. Hiatus x Hiatus is the proper name
-
It's still good, don't get me wrong. But I had a headache for a whole day after cram reading the last four or so volumes earlier this summer.
A whole blizzard of insane narration focusing on minute details, then he kills one of the four main antagonists off panel. -
In those 12 orso chapters last released ,Togashi rly pushed it to a limit with telling us what the charas think every second and using ONLY inner monologues.
But thats also the impression because that arc feels like it drags on forever. -
That's a large part of the REASON it's dragging on, if he cut even half that stuff we would be much farther along in the plot.
-
@JERK:
Still just as stupid to assume he's being lazy. As sensible as it would be to assume that, we know absolutely jackshit about his health conditions (and perhaps his marital conditions? I can't remember if the divorce was confirmed), so no one's in the right to start making grandiose generalizations how about his ethic and then attack him based off of them.
If his idea of flow is over the top OCD analysis of what an anthropomorphic octopus is thinking trying to trap a walking lobster in an elevator then he is a shitty writer.
Since when has viewing situations on the surface been a good way to judge the quality of a story. It's like reading a science fiction tale and saying THIS BOOK HAS ALIENS OMG SO RETARDED. So what if it's a fucking octopus and a lobster? Bringing that up doesn't lessen the credibility as him an author. And I'm glad to see you have this naive idea in your head that just because he decided to do a "fight" scene a bit out of the ordinary and go into detail of it, he's objectively a bad writer.
That's what you thought, but then I entered the room and stood exactly five decameters away from the door, which you realized changed the whole debate giving you exactly eight seconds to think of a new plan within the larger minute allowed by the impending magic boom boom powers of a mod, this changed your thoughts dramatically and altered your composure to a nervous one, causing you to exert sweat, which having noticed, caused me to smile. And then we both died because poison gas had been seeping in the room for the last five minutes prior to these realizations.
I'm not going to say that his detail isn't ever tedious, but this is pushing it. In a situation like the breaking in of the palace, their thoughts would be rushing at an extremely fast pace. Concentrating on apparently OCD nitpicking in your eyes is also building the suspense and seriousness of the situation. But I guess since it's heavily detailed that it's trash, right? lol
It's overdone and would be completely terrible and stupid if it weren't fascinatingly insane. It's kind of like Outsider art at this point.
lol. STORY GOES INTO DEPTH ON A SEEMINGLY INNOCUOUS EVENT; IT'S OUTSIDER ART
HYUCK HYUCK ID RATHER HAVE STALIN SENDING PEASANTS TO GULAGS THEN HITLER KILLING THEM
Incorporating a psychological aspect to a manga is as bad as Kubo's panels of swirling dust…? What?
So…...Killua once or twice and that was because his brother put a goofy magic needle in his head that we only learned about right after Killua found about it 21 volumes into the story.
Usopp abandoning the crew over Merry is ten times that.
I was actually going to bring up the whole Usopp ordeal. What I like about Usopp is that, as Oda stated, he's so relatable.
And it's not just the Killua scene. Novu, Palm, Ikalgo and Meleoreon, to name a few, have all demonstrated realistic human qualities and responses to such a serious situation during this arc alone. I have no qualms with character's who just don't give a fuck when they run into a battle, but many of the characters in this series are extremely refreshing in comparison to most Shonen, much like Usopp's personality is to the rest of the Strawhats.
@JERK:
Show don't tell.
And then, back to the narrow-minded conception that manga has to stick to this cookie-cutter, by the books style: show don't tell. Well, since so many people have done it before, we'd better always adhere to it I guess; no room for experimentation.
-
I hoped with the last chapters he finally ends that arc…but i guess he likes his insects.(and i rly thought that would be a short side arc..)
Seriously, 3/4 of the stupid narration during the palace assault comes down to Togashi not trusting us or himself to be able to show actions and emotions without literally explaining them in asinine detail.
I agree with you that right now it`s overused, but normally he found a smooth way in using this inner monologues which are a really great method to bring us some charas(especially their thoughts why they react in a way) closer.
-
we know absolutely jackshit about his health conditions (and perhaps his marital conditions?
Not like I'm Togashi's biographer but last I heard he was still fawning over her and talking about their child. As far as his health, he's in ship-shape to log hundreds upon hundreds of hours into video games over short periods of time.
Besides being able to create AWESOME villains (aside from you-know-who), the other thing I actually respect about Kishimoto is that he finds time to draw an insanely popular comic and still watch the latest movies and play through the latest video games.
Regarding health issues, usually it becomes a public matter. Nana and Hatarakiman's authors both publicly acknowledged that there were health issues.
Although both of them publicly announced 'recovery' they later gave ambiguous, "But I don't know if/when I'll be able to return to work."-claims similar to what Togashi is/has done.
This is extremely frustrating coming from Nana's author who for years was drawing the most popular shojo manga only to come out of her illness claiming she wasn't sure if she 'remembered how to draw anymore'.
Wow.
Then you look at Oda who's married and has two daughters.
- How do you handle your family?
- They come to stay at the workplace once a week. I have two children and they’re adorable. (laughs) I want to spend more time with them and right now that’s really bugging me. As far as work is concerned that which is ‘cute’, is a nuisance. If it’s your friend or something, and you don’t see them because you’re busy it’s no big deal and they’ll understand but for my kids there’s just no way that applies.
And lest we forget this bombshell from the same interview:
-
So you’re a perfectionist.
-
Only towards the comic. I’m really trailing when it comes to my private life. Yet again, I’ve only been home once this year. I’m busy so there’s no choice there really.
When you consider this and look at how some others carry themselves, you have to wonder if he isn't totally justified in what he says.
This is why when a 4 issue break was announced I was shocked, but didn't really give a shit. The man worked for the first 4 or 5 years without a single break, he worked his ASS off on the 10th anniversary celebrations only to jump right into the mammoth task of handling Movie 10, and now he's going to do a time-skip which means a rehaul for every single one of the characters he's introduced over the past 13 years.
5 weeks halfway through the story is the least we owe him in patience.
-
Justified? Oda can tattoo these words on his back.
And wait, 2 daughters? I thought his second kid was a boy.
-
I find that part of oda's life creepy and extremly unhealty.
What kind of true love can he find on Luffy, or his fans? I understand the need for a job, to do something to be remembered by, to be a perfectionist and to be admired. But dedicating that much ammount of time to a work? even if he's having fun and doing something productive that musn't be healty.
-
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere along the line it was a girl because I remember thinking it was kind of sweet justice for him to have two daughters when he's as rigid in his ways as he is about 'shonen' crap.
-
@JERK:

Nice read, detailed, captivating, I would't change a letter. I like it.
-
Just reflect on this for a moment.
Zephos, Carter and Aldrich in a thread.
It's like 2007.
Good times.

nods approvingly
So, since we're covering the opposites in terms of work ethic, what's the normal work rate for mangakas? A break per two or three months?

This was truly needed, there were too many character developments during this arc, and every decision someone took truly affects the outcome of the fight.
Overall, HxH characters are far more complex than any other shonen characters.
-
I like how unpredictable HxH can be, I like how the characters gives up some things they started, because they are unable to do it, or because they don't feel like doing it.
Just like Togashi himself.
"Drawing manga is so tiring…Let's give up, and play Dragon Quest." -
Found the bitch. Now remember, I'm not here to shit on HxH. I have not read it and both Japanese and foreign readers whose opinions I value have smothered it in praise.
But Togashi himself is a world-class loser. Original post:
http://apforums.net/showpost.php?p=1654699&postcount=6345
Paraphrased Togashi's words of wisdom from his return this year before leaving again. (Numbers are JUMP Issue #'s):5/6- Happy New Year. Sorry I've kept you all waiting. My goal for this year is to write as much as I can.
LO-FUCKING-L
11- DQ9
13- DQ9
19- DQ9 (states he's been playing for 140 hours and is only Level 11)
20- Says he was busy reading JUMP and forgot to think of a comment
21/22- Says he visited his son's open house day at school and wishes he could start over from elementary school. Great role model/father huh?
What a guy.
-
Who couldn`t love such an exentric genius:wub:
Great role model\father , huh?
Seeing how bad he is in gaming…ehhm NO
-
I dunno if he's bad or incredibly fucking good.
I haven't spent 40 hours on DQ9 and I'm at the end. I don't know how a human could play for ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY and still be level 11. How the shit is he playing?
-
Lazy as he is as a mangaka.
Spending hours and achieving! http://read.mangashare.com/Hunter-x-Hunter/chapter-188/page008.html

The same speed he draws manga ?
Maybe he's not lazy , just realy realy slow . Like a slowpoke who had a stroke . And a lobotomy . And with brocken arms and legs .

There are a few chapters like that, but those are a bad exeptions.
-
Is. . .this. . .real? Like, the manga was printed like THIS? Really?

Originally yes, but it's fixed for the volume release.

It was like this in the weekly shonen jump but not in the volume.
-
Does anyone else remember Gon and Killua's teach on Greed Island?
Gon's transformation reminds me of hers, but only in the sense that their body structure changes. We obviously know that Gon is not 50+ years old.
-
I didn't even notice that the penguin in a hat was turned into a koala in a nightgown wearing a cross .
Huh .
-
Oh you mean Buscuit Kaze. Gon's transformation is a bit like hers. Both are connected to age though. Gon has physically aged as well as bulked up.
-
- Only towards the comic. I’m really trailing when it comes to my private life. Yet again, I’ve only been home once this year. I’m busy so there’s no choice there really.
Do we…know this is in reference to his own home? Maybe he meant this about his parents?
Like "I only visited my rents' once this year".
-
@Friend:
Oh you mean Buscuit Kaze. Gon's transformation is a bit like hers. Both are connected to age though. Gon has physically aged as well as bulked up.
Well then he needs a haircut and killua needs to catch up a bit.
-
Unless he somehow goes back, it did happen with Yusuke after all. The situation was different though.
-
@JERK:
Do we…know this is in reference to his own home? Maybe he meant this about his parents?

I don't think so. I really think he is talking about his hown home, but it's possible that his wife and children come regularly in his workplace to spend some time with him.
-

I would hope he was in a different job class at that point.
Or he actually just levels against blue slimes and nothing else.
-
I don't think so. I really think he is talking about his hown home, but it's possible that his wife and children come regularly in his workplace to spend some time with him.
Lets hope the kids are his, :P.
Togashi nuthuggers not admiting hes a lazy fuck still makes me laugh, tks Zephos for trying to make them open their eyes but they are clearly blocked by Togashi nuts, keep hugging it keep hugging it.
The DQ stuff is just awesome haha.
-
Oh I admit the possibility that he is lazy, but I don't know exactly what keeps him away from manga for so long, could be several factorts. Considering even Toriyama who was quite punctual with his releases still was a gamer I'm betting on games being a big factor to the hiatus.
-
@Cap'n:
something
Holy shit. Cap'n Carter, how long have you been back?
Edit: And I see some people were talking about the narration that Togashi's doing with HXH. I find it incredibly awesome and it's refreshing to see something more like this in a manga.
-
Yeah I also enjoy the narration. It's rare in manga and really gives an epic feel to the situation. If you want a manga that overuses narration, looks no further than Baki. I still enjoy it though.
-
My favorite part of this manga is where they storm the king's fortress and everything happens in just a couple of seconds but everything is explained so much. It sounds weird explaining it but it's just amazing.
